Great voice and nice man, saw him often at lyric opera in Chicago on stage- and in the house as a listener he has been living in Chicago and is from the midwest originally.
No disappointment here. In this opera , not this aria! Listen to the very last note of the encore to "Il Viaggio a Reims". Ramey hits the high A there. 5:26 of the encore with Abbado. It is here on YouYube. He songs from E to A in this opera. I have heard him sing a low C in concert and D flats at the MET. You can listen to me sing on Youtube as well.
Its a pity that Rossini couldn't live long enough to hear Ramey. But he died before his 18th birthday. (see "Pirates of Penzance" if this remark conuses you.)
Rossini's great basses were Galli and Beneddeti. I'm certain that Ramey is better. Ramey is like Callas or Horne. He redefined what Bel Canto sounded like.
Wow! Ramey at the height of his considerable powers...the Pol Plancon of the 20th Century! And a surprise castanet solo from Montserrat Caballe (at c. 5 min) with Abbado keeping it all bubbling along! Champagne singing!
Mille grazie for sharing this...This Onegin deserves a Breguet!
Grandissimo Maestro Ramey! Il miglior Milord di sempre!

In this opera he sings everything from a bass low E to a tenor high A. This is without doubt the greatest human voice ever.
Also the greatest singer ever. I have heard him perform a low C in concert! Ridiculous.

I don't wan't to dissapoint You but there's no high A in this aria (of course), "only" a bunch of high F's.... However fantastic tecnical singing.

Is (was) there any other bass since Rossini's times who could sing his music SO well?
An outstanding performance. THE Ramey!

Bass is better than tenor. Just my personal opinion.

@Dogaradodia No, no ES mejor un bajo que un tenor. Cada voz tiene su encanto, otra cosa es que a Ud. le guste mas una u otra...

From now on, Samuel Ramey is my official bass.

I'd like to know the occasion too. Is it some sort of Rossini Gala? And the audience is all in 1800's garb...
Ramey does a great job here.
