wow!! Sounds alot like the Arp 2600. The Spirit Bob moog designed for Crumar. It was rumored that they used an arp 2600 type component to get that arpegiator function. This was after moog sued arp for arp stealing their circuitry! ha
I wouldn't pay much for an MS20..never did it for me.
The Crumar is weird but cool. dual filters, arpeggiator, pretty complex mod possibilites and can sound beautiful with it. Rarity makes it collectible to a certain extent but sure, the asking prices are crazy.
I sold mine actually as I am on the waiting list for the Synton Fenix which I'll need to pay for. Didn't want to really as it is a fabulous synth but the Fenix 2 will be as well!
I got nearly that but not quite. I'd say $2000-$3000 seems the going rate.
@buchla300 They are not really worth that much. I got mint one in late 2008 for $2000 simply out of curiosity and from watching this video, sold it few months later for $3800, which I think was crazy. The main problems I had with it was slow envelopes. I think cause I'm spoiled by my Pro-One. Overall it was a cool synth but I don't think it is really worth such a high price. For that much money it's better to build small Modcan modular. I still have Pro-One, liked it much more then Spirit.
I REALLY don't know anywhere near as much about how many features an analog synthesizer contains as much as I'd like to....but as far as I can picture in my head I would never spend more than $2,000 for any 3 octave keyboard unless it had the letters MS in front of it (as in the Korg series).
@SanusSensus Thanks! Yes, it is a great Synth. A few annoying things when working with it mainly due to the Italian build quality, but it sounds brilliant and is extremely flexible
hey man, i just bought a Juno 106 and chip one and two need replacing or repairing, i know you said you went to Synth repairs and got your synth fixed
angie4josh. I have the same common problem, with my juno 106. When the 106 came out, apparantly, they were manufactured with, sound chips, that later, malfunctioned, in theses synths. this is such a common problem with them. Clone chips are avalable, but exspensive. Good luck, I hope you get yours fixed soon. There a really nice, Classic synth. LOL .
what do you call synths where you do custom osc with square/saw/sine/triangle instead of having a bunch of crap midi preset sounds like piano/guitar/banjo/whatever?
Well there's ones I see that basically just have small crappy buttons with labels like for an example, piano, that simulate the sound of a piano, but a synth like this, where you get to program the ADSR, the waveform, resonance, cut, and all the good stuff, is something I want.
There's ones that have basically the same sound library as a midi format, which is ones I'm trying to avoid.
And I'm sure "wavetable" synths isn't what I'm looking for either.
Subtractive (analog) synthesis maybe? Every Commodore 64 came with a great and unique sounding synth. Youtube "midibox sid". MoPho is an inexpensive monophonic synth.
Some current midi-controllable polyphonic analogs: Alesis A6, Studioelectronics C.O.D.E and Prophet 08. Bluesynths is a good resource.
@ShimmySystem You need the book "Analog synthesizers, understanding, performing, buying" by Mark Jenkins. It covers the development of synths and history of makers, interviews with players. He also tells you HOW to do it, how they work, what each control does and gives advice on buying one. Prices are higher now. Softsynths, computer emulations of old synths are there too. Sound on Sound magazine on the net has practical, helpful articles. The SCI prophet 5 manual is useful too.
Yes, they are very interesting. A few odd things. Sliders have all the action in the middle so fine settings are trickier and not as solid as it looks, but brilliant fun.
did u kno this synth has both first and last note priority? thats how i came to this vid

definitely a machine I'd love to spend some time with to dig into the complex architecture. too bad they cost an arm and a leg...

@pixeljuice NORD sound like garbage. Anyone who has never heard a real analog synth next to a Nord Lead, is up for an eye opener.

Somebody is trying to sell a Crumar Spirit on EBAY this month (August 2010) for $3,800.
Yeah!!!!!?????
I laughed also.
r5t6y12 1 year ago
At 0:21 that's the same arpeggio as in Chakakhan's "Ain't Nobody".

As an enthusiast of more performance orientated (real-time) synthesis, this is probably the best synth I've ever seen, heard or even heard of...

There's one of these on sale at ebay right now, but the seller is asking around 5 G's for it. That's ridiculously way too much money in my opinion.
chrstman 2 years ago 8
Fabulous and rare synth, but agreed. That is quite a sum of money.
You can have mine for 4g ;-)
Seriously though, it is a flawed but unique instrument and I don't think I would sell mine.
buchla300 2 years ago
I have one for sale at 1800GBP at the mo on Gumtree London.. I'll accept 4gs though if ya want :)

I won't pay anything under £5k..ok? ;-)

I wouldnt pay more than 700 bucks for a spirit. It is only a 2 VCO monosynth.

@chrstman Do you remember the name of the seller, I think he is still listing it for that price after a whole year, hehe.

Bob Moog helped out when this synth was being developed. He was asked for advice by the team at Crumar.
The best synth Crumar ever made and still miles better than any VST or digital synth.

Absolutely!

@discothief ahhh taste is subjective, i prefer the sound and power of nords and viruses over this.

Lots of choices these days amongst new stuff for fully progranmmable synths.
Moog Little Phatty, Dave Smith Evolver, Waldorf Blofeld, Access Virus are some that come to mind.
Is that what you mean?
buchla300 3 years ago
So "programmable synths"?
Well there's ones I see that basically just have small crappy buttons with labels like for an example, piano, that simulate the sound of a piano, but a synth like this, where you get to program the ADSR, the waveform, resonance, cut, and all the good stuff, is something I want.

I think he is talking about general midi wavetable.
djhijinx 3 years ago
Short answer - Synths.
The MIDI pieces of crap are called ROMplers or samplers.
Try the MicroKORG. It is a digital moddeleln analog synth but it has great analog-sounding sounds and you can set them up like an analog synth.

have you tried the polyphonic crumar stratus?

No I haven't. I had a Crumar Composer which was actually quite cool and a DS2 which was super!
The Spirit is really in a higher league though.
