Its funny because my dad has the new xkr and where I live there is a lot of ferarris porsches ...tons of m3's and bentleys...but the the Jaaag seems to get attention like you wouldnt believe...the amount of people that just walk up confused on what it is..scratch their head and say " its just....perfect". Buy a lexus, by god you dont know me. I find that most cars nowadays are too derivative, the jaguar to a lesser extent is guilty of this. Its probably the most original in its class but I just expected more from jaguar, pre '92 they did so well and i'd like to see the design flare back again, the new XJ may give birth to some more daring cars.

I have an E39 528i. Although it is a very good car, it doesn't appeal the same way as an X300 does. Technically, the BMW may even be a better in some areas but the Jag always makes me feel good in a way the E39 can't.

True.. I like BMWs a clinical tool. They're pretty much perfect in what they do. Lexus is loaded- packed full of goodies but both just don't seem to have any soul. Right from the E-type, pretty much nearly all Jaguars evoke an emotional response - love or hate 'em.. I love 'em and I always find it difficult to want to pass them on. As purely a car to from A-B fast and have a bit of fun, the BMW works exceedingly well. However I'd have no trouble putting it down again.

I guess that you know very little about this car or Jaguar Cars LTD, as evidenced by your immature post. I was an engineer at Jaguar Cars for 4 years in Whitley, Coventry. We had very little contact with anyone at Ford. The Jag V8 engine was designed at Whitley and is built in Bridegend, Wales. Jag DOES use Ford suppliers but so do many other companies. e.g. gerabox is ZF 6HP26 'box that BMW also use.

However I do know a lot about FORD Motor Company as 2 of my best mates are Detroit management (yes they fly in the FORD jet to Coventry).

And as for engineers...I have had to deal with ego-maniacal engineers at the race team so your insulting comment comes as no surprise either!

I am glad Coventry was responsible for design but I know 100% that all directives came through Detroit.

No, I don' agree. Ford wanted Jaguar to use their own 4.6 litre V8 but Jaguar insisted that they use their own designed AJ26 engine. It was Dave Schupack (now at Ford but then at Jag) that championed the AJ26 enine and made a case for the Jag V8 being an entirely new engine.

Of course, Jaguar was financially answerable to Ford but who isn't answerable to owners/shareholders?

LOL! Okay, lets clear this up guys. The S-Type and the consequentially the XF use the DEW98 platform and was co-developed by Ford and Jaguar. It is used in only one Ford car, the T-Bird. It was to be the basis for the Ford Mustang but they found it to be too expensive - A shame because the D2C platform isn't really that marvellous. A Mustang that handled would have been ace.

The engines are Jaguars own V8s and the heads were co-developed with Cosworth - partly for performance but mostly for reduction in NVH in order to produce a smooth output. Why use the Jaguar engine? Well, they needed a light weight and compact V8 that Ford couldn't provide at the time. Since then it has been re-incarnated in many capacities and states of tune for Land Rover, Aston Martin, Lincoln and the T-bird.

The XJ and XF platforms are wholly the work of Jaguar cars using Alcan rivet-bonding technology. Styling of, particularly the X-type, was dictated by Ford and perhaps lost sense of what potential customers really wanted - and the likes of Ian Callum and Geoff Polities confirmed this (Polities was a Ford Executive before he went on to manage Jaguars affairs) - However, it was pretty endemic of what was going on at Ford HQ at the time - Only Ford Europe seemed to buck the trend at this time.

Future XJs will feature the current XJ platform with significant suspension modification. THe fact that the car is so light and stiff will allow them to do this. The DEW98 platform needed no real improvements, and to reduce weight, auxilliary body parts were made from Ally instead, eg, doors, bonnet, trunklid etc.

The XF is, essentially, carry over S-Type (X206) underneath (no bad thing now). i.e. steel monocoque. S-Type (X200) started life as DEW98 (D/E segment. World car. '98) but was modified for X202 ('02 S-Type). Subframaes on XF & XJ are common.
