I could be wrong, but I dont think ute is short for sports utility. I'm pretty sure ute is the abbreviation of utility.

Originally designed as a tradesmans work truck. Aussies generally dont go for hyped up bullshit so the 'sport' tag was never applied. So to this day, as far as I am aware a ute is whats in the video above and an SUV in one of the stupidly oversived 4x4 thingys that have no real purpose, generally bought by americans.
