The C64 version was better than the Amiga version, better music, I even had the C64 mouse to play it, It's amazing that some games are better on the C64 than the Amiga considering the power diference, Last ninja being another one.

I think when the ball goes out that door at the top it bounces out of the garden into next doors yard and is confiscated by the twat next door who secretly reports you to the City council..... I could be wrong :)
@atombat I don't mind Arkanoid Love the Galway music for the C64 version. I was trying to think of a similar game called Riccochet for the C64, great sampled music by Hubbard. I didna realise you had a twitter.
At home we had Revenge of Doh, for DOS, and not any other version of Arkanoid. For the Commodore 64 computer we had Batty which features a clever 2 players game mode.
Yeah, Revenge of Doh was an ST port, by Peter Johnson. He also did the first Arkanoid port on the ST, which was much better (smoother) than RofDoh. Not quite as good as the Amiga port though. I think he also converted Wizball for the ST and Amiga.
i have never owned Arkanoid but by looking at this gameplay of it i would say that Arkanoid1 is better then Arkanoid2 just cuz Arkanoid1 looks and sounds better then 2
First game a friend of mine back in the day bought for his C64.
I already had a few original games, this package full of various games (including Batman) and a lightgun (and some games for that), amongst other things.
But those I all got as presents and such, this game is the first anyone I knew spent his own money on... tried pirating it of course but I remember I ran into trouble somehow, but forgot what the problem was by now.
In any case, I found it great fun, breakout is great.
Ironic that this should be today's SWILL, Steve as I've just been playing Arkanoid Live! on the Xbox 360. :D
I LOVE this game (or at least the versions I've played of it), just such simplistic gameplay, yet so fun. :) Although getting those remaining bricks can be a pain sometimes lol, had an empathetic chuckle at your attempts on Arkanoid 1. ;)
Arcadians (on an Amiga compilation disk) had a level editor, which was pretty cool. Have you got that game?
Great video as always Steve. Love seeing some classic arkanoid gameplay on systems I'm not familiar with. I really enjoy the Coco 3 version. Its actually surprisingly good.
@SteveBenway Actually yes, the small black ones work particularly well for this type of game. Paddles would be the best obviously but those sticks are a nice substitute.
Man, I can always make time for some Arkanoid, one of my all-time favorites. I've gotta say, the C64 version is the best to me, next to the arcade original of course. The soundtrack to that one is just amazing, and playing with Atari 2600 paddles is perfect.
Awesome Steve! I wonder what ever happened to Discovery Software? Because they were involved in the excellent Macintosh 512K port that I used to play. It was FANTASTIC with the mouse, and the sound was excellent! I didn't know that there was a trackball for the Amiga. Despite the fact that the Mac had black and white graphics, there were still a lot of great games for it, and I miss it dearly.
Very much looking forward to the parcel. The mail here is being completely useless, with all of the snow. The postman won't come down our street till the road's clear... damnit.
I still think the al mackey . com PD game Megaball is the best Breakout clone on the AMIGA by far mainly because of the music and stuff but Arkanoid is a close second place.
Totally agree with you about scores. Take platform games for example surely the aim is just to complete it not get a high score (unless there are extra lives to be had)

These both look to be pretty good ports of the arcade originals!

It's a bit of a pain to play on the C64 version, I might try to attempt to play it with the Atari 2600 paddles and see if that works a little better.
The first seems to be way better than the sequel to this. = )

Trackball or mouse is the only way to go really with games like Arkanoid/Krakout. This Amiga version is very well done.
I play a MSX2 version quite often.
markvergeer 1 year ago
@markvergeer Muse works well on this kind of game, but trackball is way better.
I'm wondering now if MSX2 even got into the UK. I never saw one in the shops, much less any software for them.
SteveBenway 1 year ago
@SteveBenway Not sure, perhaps you're right and didn't the MSX2 standard hit British shores back in the day. MSX1 was very present though.

Theres a version of breakout/arkanoid on the ipod classic but done in the style of tempest 2000 or something. It's really fun.

@THOMASSU63 The Amiga suffered in its early days in the same way as the PS3... shoddy ports from inferior machines made it look bad.

@AtsumaKarin I remember the name Arcadians... but think it was something completely different... Galaxian ripoff on an 8 bit machine.

I think it was actually: "Arcadia" on 2nd thought...wish I could just dig it up and play it. :(
