Those 9 points do define a true Christain, however the 38% of the country that considers itself Evangelical take some credit for their own salvation, add to God's law and turn theology into a political and cultural agenda. They care about an appearance of external morality while abdicating their responsability to spread the gospel (evangelize). They are just like the Emergent Mainline that they claim to oppose because either IDEOLOGY makes grace cheap or is an attempt to live by the law.
I know I am only 12, and have no right to have an opinion on this, but this makes so much sense, now. My friend is Evangelical. My family family doesn't really go to church. Not that we're athiests or anything, just don't go to church. She's always wanting me to come to Bible study and saying I should join their Youth Group. She even asked me to come to this Bible camp. There's nothing wrong with that, but I see it now. They try to spread religion.
I can't see more than 7 points there. If Barna's right, Catholics, & others, are Evangelicals - so there is something wrong with the list. The whole idea of scoring or listing points to qualify as an Evangelical is un-Evangelical to the core LOL; people are Evangelical by the grace of Christ, not because they tick boxes.
Catholics don't take the Bible at face value. The Catholic Church basically acknowledges that the Bible is imperfect and is NOT the word of God, nor can it be used to interpret the word of God.
Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?' 23"And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.
I'm a Biblical Literalist, which is why I've sold all my possessions, and distributed all of my money to the poor (I'm on a public computer). As you know, this is what Jesus said was needed to have eternal life. If you own any property, you are not a follower of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 19:17-26) I've also renounced war and become a pacifist, since, as you know, Jesus allowed himself to be crucified rather than resist violence, and this is what it means to take up the cross. (Matthew 5:38-48)
@Silenus6 As a Biblical Literalist you must also believe God is a chicken - Psalm 91:4 "He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge".

Evangelicals basically they worship jews and Israel; not understanding the fact that the bible is bullshit.

Wrong.

@FLICKPatriotism
1. I'm not sure what your post has to do with mine - where's the wrong ?
2. Depends what is meant by "face value"
3. Depends what is meant by "imperfect"
4. Catholic teaching is that the Bible is "without error"...
5. - and that it is or is part of the *written* word of God...
6. - which it certainly can interpret. It must have *some* use.
This may sound & look [Prot. Evangelical] Fundamentalist, but acc. to the present Pope that is not so. He teaches inerrancy

So true...the Barna 9-point scale isn't necessarily the only measure, but at least it eliminates the ambiguity.
ObamAmabO 3 years ago
*sigh,* the word "evangelical" has become nearly as ambiguous as the word "Christian"
