Frankly, I don't see a great distinction between this kind of behaviour and fetishism, insofar as the person to whom the devotee is attracted in both cases is being objectified prior to establishing an emotional connection, which I think is what caretaker was wary about as well.
In any case, I respect your articulate and well-considered response, but cannot help but end on the question: must a person be a devotee to be attracted to someone with a disability? Seems reductive, no?

I've known about devotees for a long time (people are diverse creatures), but I never knew the word for it till you introduced it to me. True love is difficult to find, even for the fully abled, so any way you can make a good & accepting connection is cool. By referring to it as a preference, it doesn't sound quite as odd, just so long as what attracted you to the person isn't more important than the person themselves. (A person wouldn't stay with a blonde just because they are blonde.)
