After finding out through the comment's that this wasn't the mic I need I still watched the video to hear you sing. You have a great voice man. Keep it up.
@DFMerlino there's quite a few you can play around with and see which one(s) you like... Shure SM7b, ElectroVoice RE20, Shure SM57, Sennheiser MD421, Sennheiser E835. There's some pretty cheap yet decent sounding Apex, Nady and CAD microphones as well.
Usually, for mic-ing guitar cabs, you wanna go with dynamic microphones.
@musicheggiante If you are just starting out, yes. But there are some other options out there to consider as well. There are some inexpensive USB Condenser mics like the Audio-Technica AT2020 or Apex 440 that can give you a more open sound than the SM57. Or some kits like the Sennheiser E-Pack E835 which includes a great dynamic microphone (a lot of people consider it superior to the Shure SM57/SM58), an XLR cable and one of the best german made mic stands out there.
@alexn882 yes, i'm just starting! I'm looking for a good microphone both for vocals & acoustic/classic guitar (not amplified), recording in the same time.
have you plugged it into a pre amp because i have an Apogee Duet and its really quiet, is their anyway i can make it louder without effecting the qaulity?
You, sir, have helped me decide whether I want to invest on this mic or not and after seeing this, I definitely say yes. For that, I thank you. Great vocals by the way!
I was hoping the SM57 was going to be a good mic for vocals as well as instruments :) You have a really nice voice, and I like the MJ picture on the wall :D
@Roxie23x Yep, for the money, the SM57 is a great mic. You'll just need a pop filter or foam windscreen like the one I used in the video and you'll be set.
I can't believe that I hadn't thought of youtubing sm57's before. I've been using one on stage and in jam for a few months now and love it... but all I get is the same old shit, "You don't know what you're doing, that's an instrument mic." My response usually entails, "YET I SOUND BETTER THAN YOU!?"
Hey, I'm trying to find a good mic that I can easily record my guitar and vocals with, this seems like it'll work great. How do you plug this into a program like Garageband? thanks for any help!
i just got the SHS OM-450, which i know its the cheap version of the Shure SM 57 but i figured it would do justice for a little, i got it at a decent price. but when i record i barely can hear myself and i turn it up to like 30dB and its louder but i get crazy backround feedback from turning it up. anything im doing wrong?
Wow first off this is awesome! and secondly can anyone explain the process of recording with a real mic as opposed to a usb mic like i've been using? i've currently been using the samson C01U usb mic and i've been wanting to upgrade. Will the quality of a real mic be better than a usb mic? you can check out my videos and listen to my songs w/ the usb mic and tell me if you think it would be worth it or not to switch to a real mic and if so what mic would be my best choice for under 150$? thanks!
@alexn882 hey dude this is a good cover! I actually have this mic, I got it for christmas, and I was wondering, if i put a pop filter on it do you think it will be good enough, or should I return it for the sm58? because I know that the sm57 is primarily for instruments, and I personally sing and rap, so I am not sure what is the best mic for me, thanks
@kryss12345671 thanks! I think the sm57 sounds better than the sm58 but maybe that's just me. I'd either get the Shure A2WS Foam Windscreen or just a cheap pop filter/windscreen. That's all you're gonna need.
@VariousArtists2007 I agree. I don't like the 58 at all. Especially on vocals, I find it relatively hard to mix due to it sounding so dull and "closed". On the other hand, the 57 is just perfect. It's still got that nice warm signature Shure sound, but much clearer, brighter and open. Personally, I love the way the "s" sounds on it. Call me crazy, but one of the characteristics I consider when judging a mic is the way it records sibilance, haha. It is highly important to me.
@GQflydude Thanks for the compliment! The mic is still on my "to-buy" list so I will definitely buy it one of these days. The reason why I rented it was to test it out and see what the big fuss was all about. I usually do that with every piece of music equipment that I want to buy. I came to love the mic and I especially loved the fact that it can take a LOT... and I mean a LOT of noise.
@Power2theFlyingV Mic plugs into an old 12 channel mixer of mine which is then plugged into an old external USB sound card (Creative SB Extigy). That's all.
did you edit an eq there? 'cause my sm 57 has not so much low end and much less highs. and you have to sing with 1cm-distance so that it captures something at all! I still wonder, whether my mic is intact!
@simulator94 Hmm... I think I know what you're saying. A few friends of mine seem to also have that problem. I guess it's all about finding the right pre-amp/mixer. In my case, I'd say I am using pretty basic stuff: A cheap old 12 channel mixer plugged into an old external USB sound card (Creative SB Extigy). I don't remember exactly, but there might have been a little boost around 12k. So again, just try to find a clean sounding pre-amp.
@simulator94 By the way, where did you get your SM57 from? Because there ARE a lot of fake ones made in China just about anywhere... especially on eBay... and they don't even come close to sounding like the real Shure SM57.
@alexn882 I got mine from thomann. it's very popular in germany. Is it really possible that they could have sent me a fake one without knowing that? Are there some identifying features, that can help me, to find out, whether my sm57 is a real one?
@jjallen1976 Oh yes, well some people say that the 58 and 57 are very similar mics but if you ask I can hear a pretty big difference. I prefer the Sm57, but maybe that's just me.
How are you recording this? I use a XLR Female to a standard 3.5m Jack which plugs into my laptop, and I always have trouble getting the sound loud enough without having any distortion.
Better use an interface. the line ins of most laptops suck and take damage.
The Interface works like an external sound card and you have more possibilities to get the right sound loud enough. Use free recording programm audacity and an interface (there are cheap ones for 50 bucks!) and you'll be happy. Sorry for my english, i'm german.
@WeakGuy I'm using an external usb sound card + a typical mixer. That's pretty much all you're gonna need. Oh yes and whatever DAW you can afford like Audacity (free), Cakewalk, Logic, etc.
@MusicRedd Haha. That's actually my sister's keyboard, but I guess it's found its way into my room, mainly because I like the keys on it a lot more than on my M-Audio USB one.
Anyways, I'm glad I could help out. The sm57 is great, go for it!
Hmm, good question... I'd say I am using pretty basic stuff. Just a 12 Channel Mixer connected to my old Creative USB Soundcard... must be from around 2002 or so.

Predominantly used for outside recording. A pop shield will be more useful as it wont muffle your audio like it seems to have done here

Thank you! And no problem, I'll definitely put up more videos when/if I rent more mics in the future.

The Shure SM57... Uses a USB port or no?
EmceeGlitch 2 years ago
Nope, just plain old XLR. I'm sure you can find an XLR to USB converter out there though, if that's what you need.
