  • Whoa. Was this seriously 1987??

  • I think the most effective way to stop the spreading of the virus is STD people go to niche sites like "herpesanddating, net"only date and have sex with stdpoeple. ,true?>

  • Julia scores again with that line at the end of the video! She gave it to her right between the eyes and I loved her for it! ROCK ON JULIA SUGARBAKER! :)

  • Any ignorant woman reminds me of Michelle Bachmann.

  • Nice clip and nice point of views but if they'd known now about the rise of STD infections then they would be more alarmed. Let's protect ourselves and loved ones from being infected with these life-ruining infections. Fight off the STD viruses with potent ingredients from the new gene eden for safer sex supplement. • Everyone is entitled to AIDS, and it does not matter straight or gay. If you play around, and play it safe, then there are major risk involved. If AIDS was trully a punishment of God, then not only gays would be punished, but also straight people too.

  • Actually straight people in Africa contracted AIDS through bush meat first. Then passed it throughout. If they had not eaten animals that they had no business to eat in the first place and should have instead protected then the virus would not have been spread. Please educate yourself first before spreading hate. Thanks.

  • @iujock1974 Thank you!

  • @iujock1974 you please educate yourself.........ignorant uneducate people like you should need a license to talk

  • The truth of the matter is a gay person first contracted the disease. If this person wasnt gay who know aids may not have killed anyone.

  • @egamer28 you've just demonstrated the fact you don't know "the truth of the matter", & for that fact, the truth about much else.

what i object most about those like you, is that you either knowingly & intentionally lie or the truth just gets in the way of your ignorance, bigotry & hate!

you're sort of like...no, you're exactly like buy bull belt "christians" who'll never, ever have anything to do with the true teachings of Christ, consequently they spread misinformation & lies of His truths!

  • You would have been amazed at the amount of people who held that position during the 80's and 90's about it being Gods punishment. But shows like this and TBAA help break down some of the walls that still exist today

  • This was a brilliant episode, and thank God there are / were shows like this to help combat ignorance. Dixie Carter was also a wonderful person in life, am so sorry that she's gone.

  • That is so damn cruel. Who could look a person in the face, a person with a horrible disease no less, and tell them they deserve to die?! So vicious and cruel.

  • @DarkDreams420

I know man some people can be so ignorant.

  • @COWGIRLBABY19841 Its pitiful that some people actually think it's acceptable to treat people like that. THEY are the evil, immoral people. This episode struck a nerve in me. I was soo glad Julia told her off. lol

  • "...you'd be at the free clinic all the time..." lady looked like Julia slapped her "...and so would the rest of us!" Classic Julia. God, I miss that show! I miss Julia. Every now and again, she comes out in me when I get pissed! lolz

  • THIS SHOW HAS TOUCHED MY LIFE WITH NEW INSIGHTS. I RECENTLY PURCHASED THE ENTIRE SERIES ON DVD.

  • Living with herpes is not so terrible if we know how to control it.. Maybe you can check more herpes blog and story at pozmingle_______ site

  • GOOO JULIA!! LOVE HER LOVE HER LOVE HER LOOOOOOOOVE HER!

  • I think this episode tells what it's really like to deal with Aids and being poz because prejudice and or unwillingness to face reality runs rampant in the U.S.. Dixie Carter has never faultered in her speaking her mind and the writer of this episode seems to be in tune with what's going on out side his own circle .

  • I love this show! I hate how people think that HIV only effects gays :'( ♂+♂

    ♀+♀ ♥

  • As a gay male i have lost a lot of people to aids. This episode was great and hit the problem head on.

  • I've been cleaning out my p.c. "closet". I dug deep, to area's I didn't think I'd find my way out! I had gone to my initial 'unfamiliar' place of technology. Ironically while there, I found something all too 'familiar'... a 'clip', a 'scene' from 'Designing Women'. I had always loved "Julia Sugarbaker"...her wit, conviction in what she believes. As I watch this scene....never, have I loved her more.

  • Love this episode!!! and yes that Norma Jean character does remind me of Michelle (Psycho) Bachmann.

  • Do people like this STILL exist :o

  • @KaristaSwiss Sadly, yes, the do. As they say, Ignorance is bliss.

  • @KaristaSwiss Sad to say, yes. Although not as prevalent, they DO still exist.

  • @KaristaSwiss Sadly yes

  • YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!! GO JULIA, SOOO TRUE!

  • I love this show!

  • That is my ALL TIME favorite line from this series. I miss Dixie Carter so much.

  • One of the best wriiten, acted and honest truth.

Thank You Julia from someone who believed in You and TRUTH.

  • That has got to be one of the classic lines in TV history: "I've known you for 27 years and all I can say is if God was giving out sexually transmitted diseases to people as a punishment for sinning, then you would be at the free clinic all the time!" Powerful, and yet so hysterical. I can't believe that Dixie Carter wasn't at least a little bit liberal...she sounds off these lines so well!!! LOL

  • @andell1 Liberal or Conservative doesn mean your any more or less Human, Common Sense does. And this classy lady was full of Common Sense. No matter your political or religious beliefs, we need more people like her.

  • @andell1 She was slightly liberal and very enlightened...she was a gay rights supporter as well as a human rights supporter

  • GOOOO JULIA!

  • I love her. She's amazing.

  • Rest in Peace Dixie and Julia.

  • RIP Dixie Carter. Thanks for leading the way.

  • Thank you Julia aka: Dixie and D.W.!

  • Wish this was in better quality, but still a good clip..

  • One can't help but draw some parallels between Designing Women and the Golden Girls (I think the GG are better). Also, there is a striking similarity of the wit and delivery between Dixie Carter and Bea Arthur, both of whom are a part of the past now - unfortunately. They both were great allies to the LGBT community.

  • mnmcv1....you are as stupid & "ignorant" as that woman for even making a comment like that.

  • Amazing show. Very compassion. I cannot believe this did this in 1987

  • This woman is a George Bush lover; this is just TV writing. She did not believe in Gay Rights!

  • @Monrocsol Can you cite your source or do you have a personal experience connected to that bit of information? While Dixie Carter may have been a registered Republican and a self-described libertarian, she was also a strong supporter of the gay community who participated in AIDS benefits and talked publicly about her support for equal rights, especially during the height of the Bush II years.

  • @Monrocsol Wrong. Dixie Carter was a republican, but not all republicans are anti-gay rights. She was a huge friend of the gay community.

  • @Monrocsol I don't think that Dixie Carter would have played a role that she didn't personally believe in. Scroll up and click on the video where it reads: "The Designing Women Talk Gay Marriage." Besides, the important part is that this show covered many sensitive topics. This episode should be viewed in every middle school, high school, college, etc. D.W. was always ahead of it's time.

  • @AlexisAlways1 You just made me realize that Doctor Who and Designing Women share initials. Thank you. Thank you so much.

  • Julia Sugarbaker is the woman who invented pwnage!

  • I remember the attitudes towards AIDS in the 80's and a lot of people thought like Imogene did. When I saw this episode on TV as a teenager, I felt like cheering. Finally, somebody was standing up to the hypocrisy that victimized people already suffering.

  • "...then YOU would be at the Free Clinic AAALLLLLLL the time!"

Absolutely fucking CLASSIC. Love that woman.

  • Dixie thank you.. You gave all. We all love and miss you.

Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord and may perpetual light shine upon her.

  • Such a class act!!!!

  • Love Dixie will miss her.

  • R.I.P Dixie Carter. classic Julia smack down!

  • Great Clip! Way to go Julia Sugarbaker!

  • Tell it like it is honey! RIP Dixie Carter.

  • Sadly enough there will probably never be another "Julia Sugarbaker". Dixie Carter and her beloved character were truly an inspiration and source of inner strength for so many people- myself included. I am a male and proud to say a loyal viewer all the way to the end of those "Designing Women!"

  • @forrester1 Don't give up, honey, the fat lady ain't sung yet. The entire South is not populated by "You Might Be A Redneck" maroons who buy into that classist ignorance. The women of the South shall rise again, and by damn, it will NOT be canceled!

  • RIP Dixie.

  • One of Julia's best "fired up" speeches during the show's run!! Rest in Peace, Ms. Dixie Carter.

  • You won't see this on tv anymore...

  • I loved Julia's passion about this episode. RIP Dixie Carter.

  • She was ahead of her time.... she was fabulous,,,and will be missed.... she was what we all hope we would be if this type of situation ever came our way....I loved her then and now....

  • @rgtcr1234 ... I agree she was ahead of her time and as a society that keeps progressing, we'd never see a speech like this on TV today. Everyone needs a little bit of Julia Sugarbaker in them!

  • My favorite episode of Designing Women...and of Julia getting on her soapbox. Nobody did it better.

  • It's the very first time that I see the sow (because i just heard about her death) and I have to say that I am in love with the show, the characters, the script and everything.... 87, wow!!! I am sure she's with the angels now. PIP Dixie Darling.....

  • One of the best moments in tv....EVER.

RIP Dixie...aka Julia Sugarbaker. You will not be forgotten.

  • @mikeynyc I agree RIP Dixie

  • R.I.P. Dixie. Julia Sugarbaker will live in our hearts forever!

  • How did Dixie die? She was so young.

  • @TheWeddingProducer They did not say how she died. Seems like I heard she had cancer of some form. She was 70. not old but not young.

  • Dixie Carter was the most under-rated sitcom actress of all time. Playing Julia Sugarbaker was a perfect fir for her, and she will be missed - R.I.P. Ms. Sugarbaker - This will always be my favorite scene on Designing Women. Well spoken and to the point. Gives me chills every time I watch it...

  • I just saw the sad news of Dixie Carter's passing, and this was the first thing that came to my mind. I loved that character & I love Dixie Carter! May she rest in peace.

  • Linda Bloodworth Thomason (the mega-feminist and liberal....and of whom I am a fan) knew how to turn a phrase....

  • I remember being a 6 and such and watching Designing Women and Golden Girls and loving every minute of it!

  • 2:23-2:34 was EPIC! do you have the funeral scene posted?this was good

  • This is one of my favorite scenes. I love it when she tells Imagene off.

  • I remember being 9 and loving this show. It spoke to all people, but it really was a grounding for all gay men.

  • wow even back then tv was progressive I love what Dixie Carter said amazingly moving powerful and inspiring.I love the designing women!

  • @losartandeterment806 Designing Women is one of my favourite shows. I imagine I have seen this video at least four times. I love Julia! She tells it like it is...always! As you know this particular episode strikes a cord in my heart. Life is unfair enough without ignorance infecting the mind.

  • I just love Julia Sugarbaker. When she gets wild like that she makes such amazing points - the writing on this show was ahead of its time, really tackling things that other shows wouldn't.

    I looooooved Designing Women.

  • @hotwaiter I agree with almost everything you said, hon, except the categorization of Julia's "TERMINATOR" rants as "get(ting) wild." That, dear heart, is not "wild," that is pure, highly-restrained, classically-enunciated, undiluted TRUTH, and she delivers it better than any preacher short of my late grandfather. Linda Bloodworth-Thomason was and is a genius writer/producer, and between them, she & Mrs. Dixie created an ICON. Wild? No. TRUE and RIGHTEOUS.

  • BOOM, ROASTED!

  • God, I so miss seeing this show everyday. It use to come on during the week on Lifetime, but that was two years ago. Networks are so busy with reality shows that they have no use for quality programming anymore.......What Ashame

  • the name of this episode is killing all the right people. i will never forget watching this when it was on the air for the first time.i loved it then and still do, and have it on tape. i love the way she fired off on that up tight bi**h.

  • well put Julia!

  • that ignorant woman reminds me of Michelle Bachmann...

    I'm just saying...

  • she looks like her too!

  • @mnmcv1 - Gee, you sound as prejudiced and as ignorant as the woman depicted in the show, because you think your POV is better than anyone else. And I don't ever recall Rep. Bachmann saying anything remotely like this about AIDS.

    I'm just saying...

  • @mnmcv1 funny thing...she makes me think of Joy Behar

  • As much as television sucks, every once in a while a true gem shines brightly amongst the crap.

    Designing Women is pure gold.

    Linda Bloodworth-Thomas was a genius.

  • You go SISTER!

  • Best line was about how we'd ALL be at the free clinic. Cast the first stone doesn't mean much to many anymore..show me a sinless person and I'll show you Jesus Christ!

  • Julia was on point with this one.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you...this is my all time favorite moment from DW.

...probably one of the most socially progressive shows ever made.

  • Yep this was a landmark episode and event in television history and still is to this very day.

    Dancefreack16

  • I agree, I am still facing discrimination. By the way, thanks for singing SIlent Night - it was very nice.

  • this is a really good episode, I wish that it came in clearer

  • everyone, i am still trying to learn how the upload this whole episode..i want to share this with so many people who are hurting. this episode was a landmark episode in television
