Y'know I can never get anyone to set up a soflam so I can help out with guided assaults; whether from a tank or a helicopter or a jet for that matter. It seems very useful, especially in modes like conquest or rush, when vehicles are a considerable value.
@HurriShane00 Those are not the facts, the SOFLAM is on the 2nd floor ramp of the container building to the front right of the tank, you can see the icon on the HUD.
@novasatori You're right...after trying it myself...I released that you need the soflam to use guided shells on Helicopters. My apologies. You see normally when someone as a soflam planted you see the chopper or tank lit up even before you lock on it. I use the javelin alot and see the targets lit up alot. I just unlocked the guided shell for the tanks (Not in them alot) and never tried them before seeing this moment. So I was going off my Javelin experience.

Actually honestly you need to have both. MAVS are super useful, I've seen games where we were just getting dominated, then I put up a MAV and it turned around and we won. MAV is huge if they use it right. (BF3 needs to give more points for it's use though).
@Smullet90 If BF3 gave more points for the Mavs, everyone would use them. They are great for spotting I will give you that and the occasional roadkill (Hard as hell to do though)

Ya I think a few more ppl would, but they would be rewarded for helping their team. The limitation would be that if too many people did it they wouldn't get points for it. As it is now every once in a while people use them, but just because they want to win, it will kill your spm like no other. You should be able to get around 400 spm with the mav, then you wouldn't take a hit.

All u need is a 3rd person in the tank with you and it works alot faster. And if you just set the soflam down it only locks in the direction you have it set, so if anyhting is behind that view or each side it will not lock, what I do, is set it up and move a good ways away from it so I can snipe and watch for tanks and helo's and jets in the area and then go to the controller and lock them, it is not a instant lock unless it is directly in the field of view of where you ste it up.
Everyone should use guided shells in tanks and everyone should use tanks enough to get CITV station. That way anyone can just hop in the CITV station and designate them choppers.
@11kyzak11 Unfortunately. I am one of the Recons (When I Use recon) That uses the soflam. But I sit there and lock on these targets time and time again and there are no Engineers with the Javelin. If Recons are gonna use SOFLAMS Engineers NEED to use the Freaking Javelins. It goes both ways.

I'm pretty sure you dont have to stand next to the SOFLAM. It can operate on ite own without user interface. Just place it in a high place overlooking the battlefield and then go hide some place.
Man someone that mastered tank can really be a problem, with 3 persons on a tank it can have reactive armor+ any other + machine gun and a mobile soflam with guided shell...
But the CTV station cannot lock air vehicles from far though.
You dont just need the Soflam, Jesus upgrade your tanks to fit the 3rd seat in then someone can be your laser guider inside the tank itself targeting stuff for the driver.

actually u dont even need soflam with this. u just need two guys with the last upgrade for the tank and then u can just use the tanks laser designator and avoid the red light pointing out your soflam's position
When you get the last unlock for the tank its called the CITV station it allows you to designate targets suck as helicoptors, tanks, and jets. Then attack them with the guided shell.
SoFlam would is really effective. especially on Kharg islans rush and you are defending, One time we had the enemy spooked so bad ly they wouldn't deploy their LAAV/tanks/choppers, the immedietly got shot down. I had 3 squads doing that soflam/jav/ammo and we won the game with no crates taken. I wish that were most games xP
To all you recons, you can just place the SOFLAM down and it will automatically lock on to vehicles, without your help so just put it in your gear and place it somewhere decent, then you can scarper and go get some headshots.
@21cup Do a lot of engineers use the javalin? i kinda figured they wouldn't because snipers were more into using there mav as elevators. im very interested in the ways soflam can be used to help not only ground soldiers but also men in vehicles.
@bakedinspiration The SOFLAM helps everyone, not only Javelins, but also Stingers and yes vehicles too. So when you place down a SOFLAM you will help anyone with a guided weapon.
@Ghoststalkerq Depends on the map, but you also get a lot of assault class going on. The smaller maps have more Assault and the bigger one more Engineer, you usually get an equallish number of Recon and Support. I have unfortunately been on a squad which was all recon exept me, and none of them used the friggin SOFLAM.

@21cup As a recon who plays alot, the SOFLAM is semi-autonomous, but when it is under its own control its range is reduced severely (for balancing reasons of course) it has almost twice the range when being manually controlled.

Oj always fly in 3rd person (non cockpit view) until you see a jet far better for seeing surroundings and when dogfighting with a jet brake going into your turns and power out coming out of them you come out quicker and behind him pending on if you turned the correct way and aim ahead as he flys.
They always jump out ( :/ ) so your really only going for vehicle disables 99% of the time until you unlock heat seekers (2nd unlock for jets)

I fired 20 guided missiles and killed one tank and one jeep.
In battlefield 2142, when I fired a Pilum shot, SOMETHING either died or blew up, or started smoking really, really bad.
BF3 is for console kids who bitch and moan about heavy weapons killing, so DICE in turns dumbs down the damage. Now, when I drop a mortar on someone, they get "damaged" and it takes ANOTHER round to kill them. BF3 is dumb.

I love doing this. I have the CITV station in the tanks,love picking someone up in it,makin' them my hoe,and using my guided shell to take out aircraft. So fun,but I am using the canister shell now,just for fun. I like it more then the LMG or HMG now,slower,but just as effective. Support guys can't touch me unless I am not paying attention.

On the xbox me and my buddy dominated an entire game with the CITV and Guided Missle combo.
I'm really good at long range combat against other tanks, but having the extra range and damage from the guided missiles was an amazing help, and in taking down choppers, and jets, it was an amazing experience.
Do javelins normally lock on to air vehicles? Plus if the air vehicle is locked on by SOFLAM can any lock weapon work and cause extra damage. Even though not having the top affect?

@21cup well I'm tired of placing my soflam and have no one use its targeting to take down tanks so engineers learn to use the javelin, ohh and when the do use it I get 0 points for it.

@morpheuzpr The point thing is retarded, should be MAV style. I always have my friend who is a great sniper place down a SOFLAM becaue I love the Engineer class, but it makes it funner if you can feel like a tank busting baws.

@21cup I wish people gave a fuck about helping on consoles... they will spawn with a mav to kill with it before they spawn with a soflam to help the team... only bad thing about the soflam is it will not give you points for it doing the job on its own and it does not move

@21cup As a recon who plays alot, the SOFLAM is semi-autonomous, but when it is under its own control its range is reduced severely (for balancing reasons of course) it has almost twice the range when being manually controlled.

Oj always fly in 3rd person (non cockpit view) until you see a jet far better for seeing surroundings and when dogfighting with a jet brake going into your turns and power out coming out of them you come out quicker and behind him pending on if you turned the correct way and aim ahead as he flys.
They always jump out ( :/ ) so your really only going for vehicle disables 99% of the time until you unlock heat seekers (2nd unlock for jets)

Soflam or Citv station = instant rape! make sure you work well with your team and they work well with you.

@popgoesthearcticcat ok when you master the tank all the way you get a third seat and it works as a mobile laser designator built into your tank only bad part is it doesnt work on its own you have to stay in it for it to work it when you get out it no longer locks so some one has to gun and some one has to mark once this is done you can easily kill air assets

@5ProGamer5 Yep, then you have to fire 2 if not 3 shots because guided missiles do't do shit anymore since DICE dumbed down the damage threshold. Mortars even take 2 hits now to kill someone. I drop a mortar on someone's head and they live? Bullshit. I fire a guided missiles at a SOFLAM'd helicopter, and no damage. Smoke didn't even come from the chopper. However, 1 RPG rocket I LUCKILY hit a chopper with brought it down. RPG > Guided Missiles? Battlefail.

I fired 20 guided missiles and killed one tank and one jeep.
In battlefield 2142, when I fired a Pilum shot, SOMETHING either died or blew up, or started smoking really, really bad.
BF3 is for console kids who bitch and moan about heavy weapons killing, so DICE in turns dumbs down the damage. Now, when I drop a mortar on someone, they get "damaged" and it takes ANOTHER round to kill them. BF3 is dumb.

I love doing this. I have the CITV station in the tanks,love picking someone up in it,makin' them my hoe,and using my guided shell to take out aircraft. So fun,but I am using the canister shell now,just for fun. I like it more then the LMG or HMG now,slower,but just as effective. Support guys can't touch me unless I am not paying attention.

On the xbox me and my buddy dominated an entire game with the CITV and Guided Missle combo.
I'm really good at long range combat against other tanks, but having the extra range and damage from the guided missiles was an amazing help, and in taking down choppers, and jets, it was an amazing experience.

Do javelins normally lock on to air vehicles? Plus if the air vehicle is locked on by SOFLAM can any lock weapon work and cause extra damage. Even though not having the top affect?
