Ferguson KO'D by Simon Nolet Sunday afternoon game of the week.1 punch knockout bloodied his face probably broken nose RIP JACKASS . Habs had plenty of asholes as they cry "PURIST" hockey.Give me a break they used their sticks like swords and then had goons like Ferguson.Only an idiot who never watched them play would fall for their claim of PURE HOCKEY.No such thing just ask Howe,Mikita,Clarke,Lindsay all in the Hall Of Fame!
John Ferguson was a total goon and I have absolutely no respect for him. He alwasy took on the smaller guys or goal scorers Like Eric Nesterenko who couldn,t fight a lick bur scored 2 goals against Montreal so they sent out this creep out to beat him up. He wanted to fight Bobby Hull when Hull already had a broken jaw. Don Awrey got the best of him as did Gilles Marrotte and Eddie Westfall totally annilalated him but you never hear about that! I remember though!
Back about 1969, a poll was taken of the best, most knowledgeable hockey writers. Who did they rank as the best fighters? John Ferguson was number one, and this is being written by a Bruins fan. I agree. I think Bobby Orr was either 3rd or 4th. One writer was surprised at that. Might have been a Montreal writer. So he asked Ferguson. Ferguson defended the poll result, saying something like he (Fergie) was surprised the first time they tangled at Orr's quickness, that Orr got in the first punch
The Habs’ stars were getting pushed around for a few years after their 5-Cup run. New GM Sam Pollock acquired Fergie in 1963-64 and everything changed. 5 Cups in his 8 years in Montreal. No accident. Good enough to play on a line with Beliveau and Cournoyer for a good portion of his career.
What I liked about Fergie he'd fight anyone without asking for permission just like in this video fighting Walton & Awrey something BGL should have done when he was a Hab..........

I wish someone would find a taped copy of the Ferguson-Simon Nolet of the Flyers fight in January 1971. They were trading them unstopped for about 30 seconds until Fergie overwhelmed Nolet. Then he pummeled Nolet on the ice for about one minute--the refs just let him go.
Jean Beliveau once said that the Habs wouldn't have won the cups they got in the 60's without Fergie. There wasn't a player in the Canadiens' lineup in those years that still have the utmost respect for the man and what he brought to the team. For all the fighting he was also a solid 20+ goal a year man the majority of his career.
In his time, Ferguson was the most feared fighter n the NHL. Not huge either... 6 ft and 200. Fast on hi sskates. and here is what most don't realize about this guy:
Adjusted for an 82 game schedule, he averaged 22 goals a season. He was the most fierce competitor I have ever seen on skates.
Only Stan Smyl and Tiger Williams come close. This guy had NO quit in him, and he did whatever it took to win. R.I.P. JF, you went way too soon. Born and raised in Vancouver, too
Smyl? Williams? Please cut the crap. Tough and fearless to be sure, but neither could play like Ferguson. As for "fierce competitors", there have been way too many to list here, Ferguson's just one of 'em, but not THE one. Can you say Gordie Howe? Thank you.
Are you sure you don't just like to argue for the sake of arguing?
Smyl was the hardest working hockey player the game has ever seen. Tiger had a 35 goal season, and Steamer had an 88 point season. Spare me the debate
That wasn't Dryden in nets that was Rogie Vachon.Anyway, linesman got in too soon,Fergy was about ready to let loose with the right hand, would've probably dropped Awrey.
I'd have to say one on one Feguson versus Awrey without the linesmen getting in the way that Fergy would have rolled Awrey up and smoked him. He was a pretty tough two-way player.

Don't you Habs fans have some cars to burn in continuation of celebrating the glorious 1st round victory over a team that finished 10 pts. behind your team?
if you were there you fucking prick you would know that most of the people who wrecked cops car and put some fires was from a wu-tang show and was partying on the streets when bad things started.i know,i was there.
check out those homer bruins announcers. Ferguson would have ripped awrey's head off and then shit down his pencil neck. fergie was the toughest meanest sob of his era. Oh and yes he could play too.
haha ok bissi....you should know by now when it comes down between these two teams fighting bruins usually ruin the habs. Of course that doesn't mean we get cups for it though.
i have to agree with bcu84 especially this year the bruins would destroy the habs if both teams put their toughest guys on the ice and engaged in a line brawl. the habs need to get more team toughness

I watched this game & I gave the decision to Nolet.
Fergie received a bloody nose.
Final Score ... Flyers 3, Canadiens 2.

One of the top enforcer/players of all time. Probert, O'Reilly, + Marty McSorley are also there. His toals if adjusted would average 22 goals/season
sparwood8 2 years ago
@sparwood8 O'Reiley wasn't much of a fighter though. He fought, but rarely won.

Fergie was a very solid two way hockey player, feared fighter who got alot of respect who retired way to early.
kodermac 3 years ago 8
@kodermac The best. Deked Orr out of his jock. Scored 29 goals his best year. Protected Cournoyer and to a lesser extent Beliveau. The greatest.
