Genji is not a perv. It is extremely annoying to hear that comment constantly coming up. This story takes place in Heian Japan 1000 years ago. Genji was not acting unusually for his time, in fact, no one thought him perverted at all. Genji had impeccable manners. I will agree that by today's standards Genji would be considered a pervert; but in this respect, that is completely irrelevent.
@Glyre777 Correct. In fact, at the time, he was considered the perfect lover. The book takes a lot of care in explaining that he took very good care of all his women, and never forgot one of them. His love for Murasaki was probably the strongest, and everyone knew that.
@Glyre777 In the Seidensticker abridged version it shows both Murasaki's maids and Genji's own people saying that she was too young and that the situation was a bit creepy...
i haven't read the novel but i know that its basically about all the women in genji's life right? anyways i wish genji was still alive...for some reason...he's a pretty interesting perv LOL

@kanuF3 They are painted eyebrows. Women in the Heian period waxed their natural eyebrows off and painted fake ones on higher up their forehead.

平安の王侯貴族の華やかさの描写と以外にも自由だった恋愛、それに相反するように描かれる上流貴族の女性の生き方の難しさ、源氏が数々の女性遍歴を重ねる理由等工夫してほしかった。
