History has judged the movie Myra Breckenridge to be officially the worst movie ever made. I think I want to see it. But anyway, I thought I read somewhere that Janis was in fact gay and that everybody knew this fact and that she had a girlfriend? Or maybe she was just bi?
i recently purchased it for my own. the film is brilliant. there was no other way to do it except for michael sarne's way. it is so funny. brilliantly funny and witty. raquel was brilliant. her best performance ever. a total triumph!
@tomyazvids agreed. Altho i do like honesty, i hate when they go on these talk shows and come out with "Ih it was an amazing movie" when they hate it. There are better ways to put it than just to wave ur hands above and say its choppy i didnt understand it.
@chubbylilloser I have watched the movie twice and think it's awful. Horribly edited and wasent gay enough to be campy othe then mae west being in it. Russ meyer or fellini shoudl of directed it together...lol
Raquel Welch did the audio commentary track on the DVD of Myra Breckenridge (the side with the theatrical version, not the side with the uncut version). It's fascinating hearing her talk about the film and especially about Mae West, whom she suspects was a man (I'm not kidding). One of her first lines on the commentary is "I don't know why I did this movie". Hilarious.
i came home from 2nd shift and turned on the tube 1 night, and welch had a strap on going at some man in the rear, i couldnt believe it so i watched.....it was so far out
i didn't know what to think.......may west was singing too hot to handle.....it was funny..she said all men in hollywood had to have that done to them what welch did to the man, before they could be movie stars...... welll i guess she was right....sometimes i tell people about that movie.. they don't believe me....
Raquel was 30 here and she looks about 21. So fucking hot. And what a body! All tits and ass. That is a body that's built for sex. You can see why she was the ultimate male fuck fantasy in the late 60's/early 70's. And the fact that she was also intelligent and articulate and not just a bimbo makes her even sexier. Raquel was the type of woman who could fuck your brains out and then discuss philosophy afterwards.
She is a goddess, I would eat and lick every part of her even today at her age. I saw her closeup and she will give you a hard on, she still has legs and an ass of a goddess.
"The animals and the wildlife are really like the people of Africa"? Really, bitch? I suppose then that the "people" are really like the "wildlife of Africa"? Heau....
@bmbrian Ya that was a ridiculous comment and I didn't expect that from her. I'm sure she didn't mean it the way it came out. She seemed to not be able to form her thought.
I 've seen clips of Janis Joplin with Gloria Swanson on the old 70's Dick Cavett show but this is the first time I've seen Janis sharing this stage with the extremely sexy Raquel. Fascinating stuff! I wonder if Raquel's autobiography was called "A Tale of Two Titties". I've read she designed a bra when over in Germany called the "Stopenzeefloppin". And Raquel still looks AMAZING! Strictly from hubbahubbasville, daddy-o! Thanks for posting this compelling clip!
absolutely brilliant...they were so "real"...Raquel and Janis being themselves in a down to earth way one doesn't see on talk shows anymore...not after Johnny Carson era ended...oh nostalgia....thank you for posting..
@lotusbuds2000 well you can just see people down to earth elsewhere. or maybe someone with a talk show will bring this kind so-called down to earthness back.
The movie is pure camp. I watched it after reading Vidal's City and the Pillar (which also has a rape scene) fotr a American Lit class. The movie is one of those "It's so bad it's good. I laughed alot. It's so over the top especially Welch & wWest.
@irondaddymac OF COURSE!!! you probably misunderstood me... I said that Cavett and Janis made the best fun on the disgusting and conservative comments about "homosexuals on the première", etc etc..
A slight little nip maybe, but Raquel was blessed with that body, those cheekbones and some kind of American Indian (Cherokee, I think) ethnicity which accounts for her gorgeous complexion. She might look 50 at 80!
mikesterSTLMO-Raquel is not American Indian. She's half Bolivian (her father was from Bolivia), and her mother was American of Scottish/Irish Descent.
@mikesterSTLMO no there's no native american blood in her..unless you count her bolivian heritage(but I dont think her father was mestizo..ive seen his pic..but I could be wrong)..but even so she inherited those amazing cheekbones from her mother who was pure anglo. I read her book..

you will kill me for this but i see a slight resemblance to jessica simpson here... if i could give my own comment the low rating, i would...just being honest
The first 10 times I thought, cute, things were better then, funnier, more dramatic, those classics were better than life now. After that, over and over, I thought we get it, we get it.
There's little of Vidal's hilarious & hip book in the film. Director Michael Sarne had done one film prior, and I doubt any after. I think he also had a hand in, I use the expression loosely, the screenplay. A lot of the objection to the film wasn't that it was so dirty, but just unprofessional and dumb. All the inter-cutting of classic films into the new Myra film was supposed to be awfully clever, but it wasn't. Had they just used the book as a screenplay, it would have been brilliant.
I disagree. The inter-cutting of classic films clips were terribly funny in spots. It was a real experimental film that produced hilarious results and a super performance by Raquel.
Interesting after almost 40 YEARS, Myra Breckinridge still has the power to illicit such diverse opinions. People love it, people hate it. It still gets under alot of peoples skin. Personally, I think it's a comic masterpiece. So much going on in that film that goes over peoples heads. The "Buck Loner Acting Academy" poking fun of the Lee Strasberg Acting Institute and the "professional students" there.
it was a very bad interview,, the host let the guest give awkward answers and didnt help them,,, raquel may or may not be homophobic, she didnt ask to be a gay icon, just like diana dors, she too was accused of homophobia.
raquel in 1970 was a male sex symbol, thats where her audience was, so cinemas full of gays was not helping her career,i think that was her real point, sure, today she loves her gay icon image and fans, but in 1970 her career audience was piority st8 male
@CTHULUgreatoldone ? you think that thing with the nest of tropical birds on it's head is "glamorous girl next door"?? are you living next door to a mental hospital ?
Yeah,well....'thank you baby, thank you' or not,if you're a huge Janis Joplin fan like I am,you know that she was definitely into women and had she lived to see a more tolerant time,it is entirely possible Janis would be an 'out' entertainer now.
You're right, munky, that hit me right away, and Janis- a very intelligent and witty person- seemed to get the joke that sailed over Raquel's head. "Thank you, baby" for not having a clue. Raquel, I've got to say, aside from the famous body, has a drop-dead gorgeous face, but is unsophisticated enough to confuse the movie with high art. Mae West and Rex Reed had no such illusions.
defundthewar- I realise the movie was BASED on Vidal's book but the 1970 movie was really billed as "High Art", and this was mainly due to Michael Sarne's artistic liberties. Vidal disowned the film. As far as your comment on Janis vs Raquel goes; yes, Janis is exceptionally intelligent but Raquel is not the unsophisticated "bimbo" as you have perceived. Also, in view of your comments on Mae West & Rex Reed, it is obvious you're reading far too much into the short 7 minute video.
Irsh, I'm not sure you know exactly what a bimbo is. I didn't look up your info, but I'm taking a guess you're Irish, and I don't know if that word is used there and/or it has a different meaning than my nation, the US. In any event, I never called Welch a bimbo or thought it. I did say she was unsophisticated, firstly for consfusing Janis with being a heterosexual, secondly for not understanding Janis's sly "thank you, baby" remark, but mostly for thinking the MB film was in any way good.
Part2: I know that the MB film was based on the book, but if you read the book-- and it is the most hip, witty and funny book I have ever read- it's clear that the book would have provided the perfect screenplay as-is. Although one can tell the film is based on the book, it is vastly different from the brilliant screenplay. I recall Jackie Susann saw Valley of the Dolls on screen and immediately disowned it also. I don't know why these 2 authors didn't get involved in the film making process.
Sarne was a horrible choice, but given the screenplay to work with, nobody... nobody could have done a good job. On the other hand, had the book itself been used for the screenplay, and a director accustomed to Miss West's big-as-a-house ego, it could have worked. In all these years, I've searched for a funnier, witter book than Myra, came up short. There is only one person I can think of, offhand, who could get less from a guest: Barbara Walters.
If you can, I'd rather see the titles more helpful. For instance, it'd be nice to know the date of the show and in which order one should watch the clips such that we can essentially watch the whole episode from beginning to end without jumping around. For instance "Dick Cavett 1972-10-31 pt 3/9" Thanks. I really appreciate your hard work in posting these. Thank you.
I don't know about the 'it's going to be a big hit" line. As I remember, the film was reviled even before it hit theaters. And it was not the first full feature Raquel had done. There were, of course, "One Million Years B.C.," "Bedazzled," and more. Even producing with "100 Rifles."
I love Janis's off-camera comment, "get it while you can..." This really sums up a legendary lady who wouldn't be around much longer. Thank God we have these clips to look back on, they help put the past into a common sense perspective which is invaluable.

I don't know why these 2 authors didn't get involved in the film making process.

Ooops! I meant "it is vastly different from the brilliant book."

If you rent the film there is an extra regarding the controversy about the production in it. Gore Vidal was opposed to the director.

I have to agree with you about Cavett. Who would want to be on his show?
I did sort of enjoy the film, flaws and all.

Thank you.

Could you possibly post the whole interview instead of posting it in unrelated segments the way you have?

Raquel was superb in Myra; even though it's a big mess. She was born for that role, no doubt about it.
