Saw the Tubes in Toronto in October 1975 playing at Massey Hall. Had no idea who they were. Was visiting Toronto and staying with friends and during the day walked by a Audio/Video store on Yonge Street that had a bunch of TV screens in the window playing this wierd stuff of bondage, space men and crazy looking musicians. Then I turned around and a flat deck truck goes roaring down the road with these huge bright yellow, green and red nylon tubes with The Tubes printed on the side. Wild Show!
whether he was a terrific performer or a guy packing his own fudge ( I'm english - I have to guess what that means! ) , he gave a full crowd in The Toon (that's Newcastle to you) a truly memorable night. Rock on Fee. If you still can, of course.
i was at this gig at a tv studio in newcastle, it was an awsome show but was heavily edited before it was aired due to Fee Waybill's antics and of course the swearing!! I'll never forget it though, brilliant.
heard so much about this band, and remember watchin them on the tube live back in the day. Dated even then, looks like a 1970 glam rock fudgepacker to me!
@mcbrideamb If you really did watch them back then (and not "She's A Beauty" on MTV), but thought that at the time, why did you come in here to be disappointed all over again? Me thinks you're full of....fudge.
I saw the Tubes at the Univ. of Miami - probably 1977 - they were AWESOME live - and WAY ahead of their time, with stagecraft, technology, use of video... The haters know from nothing.
I seen the tubes many times in the 70's....ya never knew what fee was coming up with next....the world just wasn't ready for them!!!!!---------been a tubes fan ever since!!!!! excellant stuff!
Ghostsoflakeshore. Spot on. I've seen around 3000 of the top bands worldwide since 1975 and The Tubes are in the top ten, maybe five.
I can see why they are slagged off though. I would think they were booked on the proviso that they played the risque (for prime time TV) WPOD WPOD was a spoof of a drugged up generation. The "routine" of WPOD did not fare well on a tiny TV set.
I was at the 70s Live album shows with a session musician and he was staggered at the high standard of the band.
OK, this is for all of you critics out there. I've seen some of the best bands in Rock and have most of their records, tapes & CDs. From the Stones, McCartney, Bowe, Clapton, & Zappa, to the Police, Devo, Talking Heads, & Camper Van Bethoven, to Rush, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Tool, & GWAR. And many, many more in between. The Tubes live was probably one of the best shows I have ever seen! One of the most theatrical and entertaining performances one could hope for in a rock show! Peace!
@ghostsoflakeshore Just like you said. Plus this TV version and most of the US shows are very tamed down to what the live UK and European shows were like. The norm for many shows had 2 drummers, 2 keyboards, 3 guitars, 1 bass, 3 girls, 1 FW as a standard set. Sometimes other people would be drafted in too. The best shows were always the ones without camera crews spoiling the flow of the show. Entertainment and some, plus an album to try and relive a taste of the memories.
I remember a friend of mine had an elder brother who was about 5 years older than us, he was well into the tubes at that time. they never did anything for me........
oh so very brilliant
