Hi I'm wondering if any one can help? I'm doing everything right in this tutorial as far I can see, linear gradient, black white, mask etc. I pull the cursor and absolutely NOTHING happens, using the pait fill too makes the image disappear and reappear as it should. Any ideas?

when i drag and release the gradient tool it doesn't effect the mask at all. just goes from dark to light on the image

Ha , It puzzled me for ages. You have to make sure that you're clicked onto the actual mask

in the layers pallette and not the image. Take
