This boggles my mind. After all the juke box music, music amplified to make up for lack of content, music lacking dynamics, and so much more that has made me pessimistic about the direction, I am reborn with wonder and awe at this bright lady. Yes, there is a god in heaven and I have heard the echo of his music in the distance. I promise I'll be listening to more of Maria Schneider.
i love this song so much! it makes me feel good(: and when the conductor gets that proud look on her face, it reminds me of all the concerts i've been in. i could recognize that expression anywhere. :3
I've got a copy of the score to this, and it definitely says "bUleria, solea y rumba" at the top. I think this is just the rumba, though. Y que linda!
I'm 78 years old. listened to American Forces Radio Jazz in Europe WW1 as a boy. Grew up with all the big bands, Ellington /Stan Kenton Miles Davis etc. and then heard this on my car radio 3 years ago and it stunned me, I had to pull up on the side of the road. I bought the disc. Maria's music is the greatest I ever heard. So exciting. I wish she would do a concert here downunder.
Those of you in 'the know' and with tastes for modern European jazz will know that Maria has here been heavily influenced by the compositions and big-band arrangements of British based Kenny Wheeler. Kenny has employed Norma Winstone's voice in his arrangements for decades.
No criticism of Maria's work intended. Her work is immaculate in its conception.
I don't know about most beautiful, but anything that's lacking is surely made up for the fact that she organizes, conducts, and writes for arguabley the best big band in the world and she studies with Bob Brookmeyer.
500 characters or less makes for chopped up posts! i also wanted to include wayne shorter's native dancer album from the late 70's which featured milton nasciemento compositions and 'voice as instrument'. there is some history for brasilian music influence in jazz music..
part 2 -this is a brasilian tradition that has influenced some jazz musicians, but i don't know if it was an influence on norma winstone/kenny wheeler material.. it might have been too.
to ericthejazzer : some of what you say is true, but you overlook the influence brasilian music has had on many jazz musicians. pat metheny was using a male 'voice' as instrument on numerous recordings from back in the 80's and he certianly was influenced by brazilian music as is maria as well. bob moses was doing this back in the early 90's as well with a female voice - luciana souza.. i think..
If you jazz-loving guys out there know anything about modern jazz featuring a female voice as an 'instrument' in ensemble big-band playing you'll know that Maria Schneider has been influenced by the great British-based jazz composer, arranger and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler - and the British jazz singer Norma Winstone. Great stuff, Maria ! Good to see you paying your respects to Kenny and Norma.
Sorry, I actually don't know her playing that well at all. I just thought she always had the solo chair in MSO, but it appears I'm mistaken. Go check out her website, she might have some clips of her playing there.
Oops! Concert in the Garden and Sky Blue are available for download from Artistshare (you need to sign up) and her online CDs are about 10 bucks (american). The best albums in my opinion are the two I've mentioned above... go check it out on her site.
Killer! Thanks.

I have to be honest, I've never even heard of Gisbert, but that is one sick solo he just took. WOW! What a flight....

I played alto 2 on this song at UW-Eau Claire last year. There's been no creative experience in my life to match it yet. What a masterpiece.

Does anyone know where these videos are from, or if they're available anywhere?
bassboner 3 years ago
Those videos have been shot by mathias Ledoux for his last film "New York jazz ballad" (2005) dealing with NY jazz clubs.
It was produced and broadcasted by the french division of the french&german channel "Arte", one of the finest channel on earth.
Sadly, I don't think it's available on video.

ps. this recording does not do Gisberts tone justice and I personally prefer him on trumpet.
