  • i,ve just spotted a mistake in the music at .45 the third beat he plays Ab F G not four Gs as written .I wonder if there are any more.

  • guitarist Jeff Beck called him "the best guitarist alive"

  • @srt619

do you think mclaughlin can play scarified by paul gilbert ?

  • just about the best song to steal licks from the melody,, is charlie parkers donna lee

  • it is often hard to steal from jazz great's solos, because a lot of it is passing notes, but should give a person great ideas,,,,a good example of something to steal and transpose to all keys is intro of dizzy gillespie's bebop,

  • He changed it! And it still hasn't caught up yet!

  • just like that

  • regarding the tune from 3:47 it would be much better to write this in 6/8 time. I am sure John didn't write this down in 4/4, it was written by a stupid programm. If it was written in 6/8 time there would be no "false triplets". Though mathematically correct the sheet is totally crazy.

  • here's a guy who really changed things. brilliant musician.

  • If people enjoy this kind of thing that's great, but it sums up (and possibly gives birth to) a sad attitude about music to me. It's trying so hard to impress, and creates the impression that being 'good' or 'great' is a measurable thing of how many notes you can hit per minute. It's the kind of thing I'd clap for in a talent show, but I find it difficult to enjoy or connect with compared to the likes of Peter Green or David Gilmour.

  • @Willsq Umm...John McLaughlin is not attempting to "impress" you with this. It appears he is instructing (note the sheet music) for those who wish to take on the gargantuan task of attempting to play these songs. McLaughlin's been playing for over 50 years and has played with all the greats - he's long past any need to display his chops to impress anybody.

  • @Willsq Your a tard. It's because what you listen to is boring. Believe it or not there are people smarter then you and this not complex to them, its smooth and relaxing.

  • @Willsq This is Jazz......This IS what Jazz is....If this was a Sax or Piano solo this is what you would expect......The same for Jazz [Fusion] Guitar. It is about [True] IMPROVISATION That is its core skill....This is why it is a Niche market compared to the market for the Pop/Rock star ......it is an acquired Educated taste and understanding....Try listening to Miles Davis, John Coltrane,Mcoy Tyner, Charlie Parker etc and you will understand what is going on here.....

  • John McLaughlin, one of the greatest guitar players in 20 century, what do you think?

  • My boner is far from subsiding. McL needs the same warning labels on his records as cialis.(just for safety). .

  • loud and technical

  • cool note

  • Very cool!!!

  • @mookmylar where is his house?

  • @AhnDanil hahahahahaha

  • @mookmylar Suck my ass man

  • @mookmylar I'll steal his licks bro. Guarantee yo ass I don't get arrested. ;)

  • @Karwash24 should i start holding my breath now?

  • Welcome, students. Just play this and you will play like me! Holy crap!!!

  • This is some badass playing by Johnny Mac.

  • practice over the changes lern altered diminished locrian minor mayor dominant augmented and study on every position make lick paterns and intervals up and down pracrice a lot of voicyngs and if you got some taste ... you are mclaghunig

  • Just a thought, the notation doesn't always match what he is playing! At 5.30 for example, John is playing 32nd's (DemiSemiQuavers) in 6/8 time, we are seeing a lot of 16th triplets. I'm still enjoying it...thx

  • His picking technique is very good indeed........but check out this flawless picking:

    watch?v=T-cEd_Zp2F0

  • To me all the greats have a certain "thing" they rise above the rest at. Mclaughlin's is PICKING the note. He's definitely not one to rely on hammers and pulls.

  • I would never want to transcribe John McLaughlin, but kudos on whoever did

  • Oh yeah You tube and to think i just paid my guitar teacher fifty bucks to learn freebird

  • what a load of bollocks

  • This is melting my face off...

  • @IcolossusPSN i cannot read anything wrong in his comment, and i don't understand why he should be an idiot. Insults should be saved for those who really deserve it, ( I know of some people)

  • My goodness!

  • When you were already a guitar monster in late 60s early 70s what can you expect.

He's got such signature, he only needs to play 2 or 3 note...you know its him

  • hahaha i love when it says easy demo....

  • starting your solos on off beats and using phrazes which include 1/4 18/ 1/16 and 1/32 but played in a dotted style eg as though broken triplets..also harmonic/melodic devices like starting the tonality of the upcoming chord earlier than the next measure so it sounds ''outside' the tonality for a second until the chord comes and then it slipps 'inside' the tonality creates interest :)

  • I love JM but man he is a terrible teacher

  • I have been listening to JM since 1974, but it's only when you see the transcription of what he plays scrolling before your eyes (if you can read music) that you see that he is either a) probably the greatest improviser that ever lived or b) cheating...!

  • The difference between Jazz players and Shred players is that Jazz players use 16th and 32nd notes with odd rhythmic phrasing and interesting tonality (and pick every note), whereas many shred players do the same 16th note triplet pattern over and over, sometimes using only legatto.

  • @CameronYousef Jazz players are harmonic/melodic players ie they undertsand and use complex chord/scale relationships to solo over the chords ....ie a CM7 might be approcahed by a metal / shredder as Cmin pentatoni of C blues scale possibly Cdorian or Phrigyian or Aeolian modes ..whereas a jazz player will use all of those but also use scales with altered scale and chord tomes eg C D Eb F G A B ..ascending Cmelodic minor scale might get altered to C D Eb F# G A B

  • @BoroughStudiio That's also true. I was looking at it more from a rhythmic aspect...but in terms of tonality, you're dead on.

  • @CameronYousef If you watch his playing, he is pretty much continuously playing using all up and down pick strokes, even when moving to different strings. Very difficult.

I think George Benson does not do this. He always changes strings on a down pick stroke. He has even

    recommended that guitarists do that.

Shred playing using a lot "tricks" to sound like they are playing fast. They are not.

Mastering this picking technique takes a lot of practice.

  • @GaryNull Yeah that's true. I know...shredders tend to use simple tricks to sound fast. It's been a long time since I've done any of that. I had a teacher that was dedicated to McLaughlin's technique of picking every note (no legatto, no hammer ons or pull offs), so I developed that as well. But...I have never gotten down that picking technique, nor have I tried to.

  • @CameronYousef

yes even shawn lane who is a technnical monster said that mclaughlin is the ultimate picking technique master

  • His brain and hands just work together on a different level....

  • omg...... I wish I can do this. This guy is such a beast.

  • Oh,now I get it.LOL

  • @digital6string1 easy, isn't it?!?!

  • @digital6string1 , that's funny. Even if John McLaughlin slowed his playing down to 1/4 speed, I still wouldn't get it. The guy's got not only amazing chops, but also advanced music theory.

  • John puts (some of ) his cards on the table . Only the very best can do this. There are thousands of musicians who play an A minor chord and try to make a secret out of it .

  • This is some outrageous playing . All for an instructional video!

  • I will have to buy this thing.

  • The guitar needs to be turned up and the backing track down!

  • The master is playing, the rest of us are praying ...

  • @docoftheworld -very nicely put although I think "playing" and "prayer" are pretty much synonymous when referring to John McLaughlin. Anyway I love your line.Maybe you could develop the idea?

  • @bluesborn thanks buddy. and i agree, playing and prayer are indeed synonymous in this case!!!!

  • @docoftheworld -very nicely put although I think "playing" and "praying" are pretty much synonymous when referring to John McLaughlin. Anyway I love your line.Maybe you could develop the idea?

  • @docoftheworld you should be practicing.

  • @Mrgaragancha praying AND practicing that is :D

  • @docoftheworld well i'm athiest so MOAR PRACTICE

  • Thank you so much for putting this up!!

  • Amazing how he can improvise so difficult patterns and alternatepick every note. his tone and the backingtracks are not my cup of tea though.
