Shortly thereafter, on Feb. 21st, 1980, our family including Leng was sponsored to Canada by some church families in Belleville. This marked a new beginning, a hope for a better future for my family.
After attending ESL classes for 3 months in Belleville, Leng and my family moved to Toronto. He started to bear the burden of the family as a financial provider and held various factory jobs to help support a big family in a new country.
Leng went to Liu To Chinese Middle School in Laos and graduated in 1976. Unfortunately, he was not able to further his education beyond grade 9, as he went abroad to Khon Kaen, Thailand at the age of 16 to find work as a manual laborer to help support our family. After being on his own and doing hard manual jobs for 3 years, he was reunited with his family in Nong Kai, Thailand at a refugee camp.
Leng naturally assumed this role and responsibility at a very young age with much respect and obedience to my parents. As one of his younger siblings, I saw him as my mom’s right hand man. If we disrespected my mom and didn’t follow orders, Leng would step in and make sure we clearly understood what was being asked of us – yep, he had permission to “discipline” us, now what older brother wouldn’t mind that?
Leng was born on June 5th 1960 (the year of the rat) in Vientiene, Loas . He was the 3rd oldest child to my mother Deng and my father Boonma. He has 5 brothers and 4 sisters. This size of family was not uncommon back then and so it was an expectation that the older siblings would take on the responsibilities of caring for the younger siblings and helping around the home.
There is no flashy way to tell you about Leng. He was a simple, ordinary man who spent the most part of his life caring for other’s needs before his own. He was a man of few words and lots of action. In this way, he was special to everyone who knows him. He understood the value of hard work and lived by it daily. Life did not come easy for Leng, so hard work is what got him to where he needed to be.
