Yall are so dumb, instead of looking at it as a way to show that us black people look good no matter what shade of skin we are, yall saying that she is making us look bad or whatever. Well now that she was lighten up in her picture to look more whiter, yall made. Boy black folks just hate on each other from the beginning of time to the end. First we sold our people to as slaves, now we hate to see another progress.
Black Americans are not insecure Kuntakinte and we don't let other people have power over us, to be honest most of us don't give a shit about it either. I understand that you don't have a negative association with "Blackface" which is cool, outstanding, and great and that's admirable but before you go off the handle about how Black Americans feel about a subject research it first. If you haven’t already, research the "Minstrel show" and "Black Face"
(This is continued from the post above that I posted.) Once you do, that'll give you a better understanding of why most Black Americans look at it in a negative way. Personally, I thought the video was beautiful. Also, Black Americans know that face painting is traditional in Africa and we love it but that's not the same as BLack Face/Minstrel Show.
A lot of the comments made on this issues were pretty inaccurate. The inspiration of the photo shoot had nothing to do with racism. People research Fela Kuti who was the inspiration for the photo shoot. It is best to educate yourself before making ignorant comments. I agree with Tonya TKO the photos were beautiful.
You know what I'm black, but we are just as racist as white people.. so who cares? There's always gonna be racism! The REAL question is are we gonna let it get to us forever?! I mean come on now, RACISM WILL NEVER DIE!
Tonya that was definitely black face. The exaggerated features developed later. They painted Beyonce a darker shade of brown in Dream Girls. Remember the photog segment? But they painted her entire body. Beyonce looked so beautiful when they did it that way. But this definitely had some underlying motives behind. You'll find that many skin bleaching creams are made in France.
Also, post whatever the fuck you want to your Facebook fan page, I could give a shit less, I'll never look at it or anyone who agrees with your nonsense bullshit. Fuck You. P.S. You do wear a lot of make-up, can't bullshit a bullshit artist hunny.
Good for you, you crazy bitch, I'm done talking to you, you obviously had a lot of time on your hands if you took the time out of your "busy" schedule to insult me and act facetious, at least I don't go around pretending to be smart when all you do is repeat the same "big" word numerous times. Also, I apologized and all you did was continue to insult me, my grandfather died today, I don't need your childish bullshit, I blocked you on this account and my other one, have a nice day cunt. - Tragic
@0oMrsDeMaRo0 I'm not sure if the best way to pay tribute to your grandfather is to come on the internet cursing and carrying on. I know death hurts. But dont concentrate on why he DIED, think about why he LIVED. And you'll see that the things you were meant to get from him you have gotten, the rest you have to branch off on your own. Nothing is permanent so we have to give thanks to what we have while we have it.
Carpe Diem. Seize the day.
And I know from experience that ppl never really "Die"
@TonyaTko Also, good research there, I did maybe two or three video's about that out of the 47 I have? I'm a make-up artist, I don't do mundane boring make-up like other guru's do, I have the guts to explore.
@TragicFlower666 I dont have the time time to play. I thought your tutorials were creative. The zombie one reminded me of something from wes craven. I think there is a certain type of beauty in that type of "dark" art... when I was in Turkey I went to a bar which had a HUGE painting of a young vampiress on the floor in a beautiful venitian frock crying two streams of blood, and it was one of THE MOST painfully breathtaking murals I have Ever seen. I only wish I had taken a picture of it
@TonyaTko The one thing I remember most abt the painting is the girl looked so fragile & so tormented & her fangs were out. At the time I didnt understand why she was crying blood. I didnt even know WHY she was crying. But it was beautiful & hard, while at the same time more tender than anything I could have imagined coming from an obvious predator. In my mind I imagined she didnt wish to be a vampire. But as the music thumped I got carried away in the Istanbul beat & the mural became a memory.
@TonyaTko Well, I apologize, I appreciate your comments, thank you for that. Also, I am a big fan of his work, so it is quite a compliment to receive. I have lived in Germany, England, Italy & Japan, I've never been able to experience Turkey, sounds like a wonderful place.
@TragicFlower666 Sorry, I was in a rush earlier... I meant Tim Burton. I think Craven is more horror where as Burton is more 'Creepy'... I don't know how to describe it, but Burton has a way of making Deviant into the Endearing.
@TragicFlower666 Please tell me what is derogatory about making up your face to a darker shade of brown? Blackface in and of itself didn't have to be a hurtful derogatory practice... but the minstrels who did it acted like buffoons, used broken English, Nappy unrealistic wigs and big white or red CLOWN-shaped lips & jester clothing. The practice was used to demean & humiliate Black people.
@TonyaTko If you had read the comments under that video, those were one of the comments, I was showing someone else's opinion, also, who are you to judge my appearance when you run a make-up company, that's not how I dress everyday and what does dressing up like something imaginary have anything to do with ethnicity? Beyonce herself is fake, she wears nothing but wigs, heavy make-up, I meant putting it on looks ridiculous, I said nothing about that, thanks for twisting my words. Thumbs up!
@TragicFlower666 I have no idea what you're talking about, under what video? which comments? Im talking about my video & I was responding to your comment about the Mammy playing spoons on her feet. I dont feel Beyonce's photoshoot was derogatory or meant to be demeaning. Playing 'spoons' on the otherhand, is.
Re; Bey being fake? Everything is hollywood is fake, and I dont run a cosmetics company, I sell organic all natural skin care products. I help ppl find NATURAL BEAUTY, not Cover it.
@TonyaTko Someone under the video of her photo shoot wrote that, I said I posted someone else's opinion, who by the way was African American, so tell them that. You yourself even said in one of your video's that she looks white to you, what exactly does that mean? Should I take offense to that or get all uppity, no, it's not that big of a deal as this is to you. Just saying. True but if you care so much about natural beauty, why do you have tons of make-up on in most of your video's?
@TragicFlower666 Nonetheless, Im busy again... But THANK YOU! for thinking I have on "Tons of Makeup." Most of the ppl who watch my vids know I dont wear foundation bcz my skin is so flawless. At times I wear concealer to hide my dark circles from lack of sleep, A lil bit of eyeliner & some gold powder on my lids. OH and my POP GLOSS YESS! But I challenge you in my 400+ vids to find "MOST" of them where I'm even Wearing makeup. But it means a lot from a makeup guru to think Im am! THX :)
@TragicFlower666 Congratulations your comment just made it to my facebook fanpage! I think this is a Tremendous Compliment! . Especially as an Fx makeup artist, that you can't tell Im not usually WEARING make-up... and when I do, theres no foundation and very little outer accoutrements. Again, THANK YOU! TkoSkin Rocks the Box!
@AnthroItIs It's not offensive BECAUSE IT'S A DEDICATION TO AFRICANS WHO NEVER DEALT WITH BLACKFACE!!!! FELA KUTI USED TO PAINT HIS FACE JUST LIKE OTHER TRIBES. SO BEYONCE ACTUALLY SHOWED US LOVE!!!!!! Can we please stop this nonsense. The world doesn't evolve around us African Americans.
It's truly hilarious how we African Americans don't know our history. People there are African tribes that painted their face brown and black. It was a dedication to Fela Kuti. Beyonce did nothing of the sort.
STOP CALLING IT BLACKFACE!!!! it wasn't blackface...google a picture of blackface and you will see the diiference...thank you Tonya, some people need this clearification smh...
OMg this is crazy. She did it to pay tribute to all the African Queen and Fela Kuti. There is nothing wrong with embracing your culture or an others. Get over it people. If this is not offending me it shouldn't offend you and I'm African.
the french are european, all european nations had their involvement in the trans-atlantic slave trade, this of no surpise, moreexploitation of our people, its what they do,we have forgotten so much, and won't listen to truth about self or the socalled oppressors
@mz5breezy Really! When did Beyonce say she is not black? I heard her speak on her mother being creole and A LOT of interviews where she is referring to herself as a "black women", but where and when did she say she wasn't black?
look bytch stop trying to act like only a dark person can be beautiful. And there's more to being a human than the color of their skin. The same God that made big lips made blue eyes. U black folks n u crakkas who alwayz caught up on some skin color shyt, need to get over urselves and shut the fukk up
It's not "black face" under racist american terms. It's the black face which refers to african tribes people who painted there face in many colors, including black. "The idea of the shoot is paying homage to the african queens over the ages" is what the young woman says in the video. African americans make a lot of "whoop la" over nothing. Kuntakinte200 also made a comment on this video blowing this underground "outrage" out of the water; showing how ignorant african americans can be.
ALL YOU PEOPLE ARE MISSING THE WHOLE POINT . BEYONCE WAS LIGHTEN HER SKIN . LET ME SAY THAT AGAIN IF YOU MISSED IT . BEYONCE WAS LIGHTENING HER SKIN . IF SHE WAS SO PROUND TO BE BLACK . THEN WHY LIGHTEN YOUR SKIN . THAT IS WHATS WRONG WITH THE PITURE . AND NOW ITS COMING BACK TO BIGHT HER IN THE BUT . IF SHE WASNT LIGHTENING HER SKIN . NO ONE WOULD OF SAID ANYTHING . AND I NOTICE BLACK PEOPLE DONT TIHINK STANDING UP FOR BLACK IS KOOL ANY MORE . WAKE UP I NO ITS 2011 IM NOT GOING TO EVER CHANGE
@thinkalott33 thought I told u to shut the fukk up bytch azz nygga. u still don't get it do u dumb azz. I guess u too fukkin dumb to tell the difference between african art and and american blackface.. hhahahah lolololol. u r so fukkin stupid. get an education u fukkin moron
@TopDog21stcentury suck my dick fagget as nicca . why dont you come pick your moma up im done with her . i wish a would of met her earlyier then i could of ben your dady ! lol
sorry you african americans are so insecure that its hurt..we AFRICANS dont give a shit about that.we dont let other people have such power over us like you guys do...we dont have this negative association with " blackface" like you guys do.she was dreessed by an african designer...besides painting face is a traditional things all over africa..yall need to get over thats shit
@Kuntakinte200 Yes that insecurity comes from a history of hate and being trained to hate our appearance. The first movie "A Birth of A Nation" had men in black face pretending to be monsters, in order to be in movies A.Americans Had to act a fool, In Africa the Africans are the Majority and it may be a little easier to reinforce culture heritage and pride. In America, A. Americans were taught and conditioned, from slavery and disconnection from the knowledge of self to be made to hate self
@geniushardhat i fully understand the history and the meaning of black face.
one thing people are forgetting is the context in which she is taking the pictures. The fotos were taken for a FRENCH magazin in honor of FELLA ( an legendary nigerian musician). so the campaingn is made to target frenchs with african backgroung. and in france there is no history of blackface what so ever.
if it was for an US-magazin i dont think she would have done it. in this case the context is completely different
@Kuntakinte200 mayB u don't have a negative association b/c where u are from maybe(?) there wasn't a negative connotation attached to it. Good 4 U, if u are being sincere, that u don't view certain racial images n a negative way, however 4 Africans reared in America those images reflect something different. 4 many years white america, with the power of media, have made a constant effort to evoke views of ugliness around the world about african americans. & thats hard to just get over.
@brntreat i fully understand the history and the meaning of black face.

Its funny how people in main stream media will say ugly comments about a blk persons body type/figure but if a white person has that same figure its so gorgeous. If you open ur mind and listen, not hear, to the opinions, comments, disscussions about blks here in America u will see its very negative. However, I will say u are very right in the fact ALL Africans, American, French, British all Africans need to stop allowing others to dictate their beliefs about themselves and their equals.
@Kuntakinte200 you need 2 stop speak of people/history you dont understand.why don't you try figuring out the details of our history.its ok if youre not interested but don't criticize if you dont want 2 do the research.so thankyou 4 the negativity as well as racist & stereotyping people contributing to the false inferior image of african americans.until you are the minority and whites are the majority in your country keep your criticism & judgement 2 yourself.
@Kuntakinte200 im not offended by the picture..but blacks in other countries have a lot of the same issues.whether its "we africans" or "we african americans" we're all black.who hates me 4 my skin hates you.african americans speak because we have the"power" 2 speak.its not insecurity its a right, earned.we didnt always have this right.people died for us 2 have it.thats why we say whatever we choose.regardless of what you or anybody thinks of us..and somebody always has an opinion,of US. smh
@Kuntakinte200 even thought this doesn't bother me personallly, you africans aren't the same as us blacks(hebrews) over here lol so of course you wouldnt care.
Knowledge can mean the difference between life and death
It's not shoe polish.
They used to Burn Cork to an ash and then smash it into a dust like substance !
I do think she sold out but I don't think that was a good move on her part.
There are so many people are very light in skin tone. Even before whites came to Kemit . If they wanted a darker chick to model they sould have gotten an authentically chocolate woman...like yourself!
Its not about being insulted by darkening the face, its the image that she is projecting about Africa by doing what she did. Its someone else idea of What an African looks like * dark skinned, war paint, and wearing bones around their neck. How does that represent Femi? Its not about the Black Face its about messages shes sending out about the people shes trying to represent . See my blog about this at my website "rebrand Africa" --url: Rebranafrica or google rebrand africa for my commentary
Yes, Beyoncé is still a Black woman, but outside of the US, the vast majority of people are not fully aware that she is black or of African ancestry. Let's not get fooled here. The Blackface photo shoot was made in France for a French magazine called L'officiel. The French mentality and culture is far different than in the U.S. French people are still mocking black people in the media by using Blackface. Beyoncé is not educated enough to read between the lines. She is just a puppet.
@Lunadimieli wow i agree Beyonce wasn't even thinking like that. She's only concerned about the money.R u sure that France still is racist? Coz Josephine Baker was embraced more in France than in the U.S.European countries do not have these type of issues or hang ups.
I'm gonna tell you why dumb ass beyonce painted her face BLACK. She tried to say it was for Fela but the bitch probably doesn't even know a Fela song. Lyin' bitch. She painted her face BLACK because deep inside she wants to be darker. She's some half breed creole mess. Some shit science can't even define. WE, black people, know exactly what we are. There's no question. I know what I am. Beyonce doesn't know. She has no identity so steals from everyone else. Fucked around and offended everybody.
@Satansoppressed Wow.is that what you think of anyone of liter complexion. No wonder we have such an "identity crisis",or "tragic mullatto" syndrome when you make statements like that.I know that that is what people of darker complexions think of me.I do not know Beyonce personally, now do i care for her music. However not every "lite-skin-ded" female is confused about who they are, desperately seeking black approval,i mean this post is deeply racist. We are not the enemy."Half breed, creole mess"??
@kaliyuta And yes, light skinned people are in an identity crisis. Even Mariah Carey admitted it, as a child she was confused about what she was. I am chocolate colored and have never been confused or felt out of place because of my skin. It's a light skinned thing because you're mixed with too many different races. White people know what they are. Black people know what they are...mixed people have mixed feelings about what they are.
@Satansoppressed With all of this dark skinned racism projected unto us i can only imagine WHY SOMEONE WOULD BE IN A FUCKING STATE OF IDENTITY CRISIS!!!!
@kaliyuta Well, what do you want me to say? Go lay in the sun for a while. Get blacker, then you won't have an identity issue. Why waste time playing with face paint like beyonce? She'll never be Black (unless she has a skin darkening surgery). You're technically not a black person unless you are dark brown. Otherwise the term "black people" would be contradicting. That's why white people think they are black now days. They think black is a style. Blacks are people who are dark skinned. Google.
@Satansoppressed Category as bi-racial/multi racial "mixed" individuals and somehow the same as Beyonce? Strange Creole is a combination of the African ancestry/west indie ancestry/French ancestry.Interesting how you come up with that describing all but "some" "lit-skin-ded folks".I have none of those combination's in my background and neither does beyonce .So these statements are all from hate.
@kaliyuta Black is not a socio-economic status (except in America). You cannot be socially Black. Just because a person is poor, doesn't make them Black. Struggle doesn't make you Black. PHYSICAL TRAITS make a person Black. The traits are dark skin and, often, coarse hair. There are Blacks that have different hair types. I'm not being racist. You are American, be proud of that! Just be American. Don't try to get Black approval like beyonce. That pisses Black people off as you can see.
@Satansoppressed Interesting tactic and logic you have it's shame you think we're all alike and so therefore u must think I Am just feeble frail lite skinned creole confused witch that can't see your blatant racist comments for what they actually are and have the spirit fire enough to call it out.I never stated that "Black is a socio-economic status, being poor,or "The Struggle" makes someone "Black".I am stating the fact that you are projecting serious racist hate statements on bi-racial people
@Satansoppressed Me calling these statements out as pure racism that for some reason is racism that "don't count",it most certainly does not mean that i am trying to prove myself or am trying to "seek black approval like Beyonce" Once again I am a human being not a racial genetic mutant crossbreed circus freak for insecure self hating darker complected black people to poor out all of their deep from slavery hatred on any and everyone that looks like me.Why would i want to seek approval at all
@Satansoppressed Let alone from a group of people who have hated me for existing from the moment i was born? Doesn't make much sense, why because For me it's not true i know deep down "the black community" will always use me as their mental, emotional, and spiritual punching bag for their own racist sadistic entertainment.Meanwhile they somehow successfully try to make us look like we're the ones with the issues. For some reason you have chosen to lump all "lite skin-ded creole bitches" in the same
@kaliyuta I like Amel Larrieux. Beyonce is just horrible. All light skinned people aren't seeking black approval and I'm sorry if I'm giving you that impression. Beyonce is definitely seeking black approval. As I said, in another comment, Barack Obam is a person I also despise because he's a puppet and does whatever wall street bankers tell him to do. He happens to be mixed and also seeking black approval constantly.
@Satansoppressed I've read all of your statements and all i'm seeing is lot of well eloquently placed words with racist "i hate all mixed/lite skinned people" undertones. If you want to for a dark skinned kill half whitey army then do it on JayFag's videos. There are a lot of places you can post you mixed racist hatred on.Mariah Carey, and Barack Obama are not spokes persons for The nation of cursed half whitey lite skinned folks who think they the Sh@% and who want to be white.u're totally racist
if beyonce decided to stand in the sun for a while or go to a tanning salon to achieve couple of shades lighter, if they would say she is mocking blacks as well ( considering that she is black), if she were to use lightening cream and get few shades light would they say she is rejecting her blackness!! google images of Bey trust me she is never the same shade always..if u look at pics of beyonce on her\her husband's yacht enjoying the sun, she is a different shade than what she is in the magazin
I still don't believe what beyonce did was wrong or offensive. I say compared this to white people painting their faces black, making fun of us. They are two totally different things. I'm no beyonce fan but even I wasn't offended by it and thought she was beautiful. Sometimes I will never understand people.
you african americans make me sick ! Sorry but I'm black too but I'm african not african american, and I don't find this photoshoot offensive. Why ? because this is a tribute to Fela Kuti, Fela Kuti also used to wear this kind of clothes and paint his face because this is TRADITION ! I don't know why we should be ashamed of our traditions.
History is History, traditions are traditions. You, African American have your own culture but THIS is african tradition.
If African traditional dresses means primitive/savages, beast to you, it means you're ashamed of your own backgrounds. i'm proud of my traditions, my culture. And Beyoncé is wonderful with these dresses.
I'm talking to everybody who's shocked by this photoshoot. This is not the first time she paint her face, she did it in Dreamgirls and wearing african dresses is not shame but pride.
I'm really sorry I just watched the end of the video and I really thought you were against her because you've responded to my comment adressed to Anthroltls
But I like your video, very smart and you really understood the message of this photoshoot. I'm just shocked because of these racism accusations against beyoncé who is also black. But anyway, sorry again :)
Sometimes I feel like African Americans don't want to be associated with African culture/traditions.
@QueenBeyonceAddict it was not a tribute to Fela, the title of the shoot was a tribute to african queens...her husband is co-producing the musical Fela in france, what you don't know is that this is exploitation, in her next album she is going to use some of his music, the question is how much of the royalty will go to his heirs? This is still exploitation she cares only about attention and money....
Respond to this video... As an african, this is NOT african tradition, just because her and solange have been wearing african attire of late, doesn't mean they care about YOU or Africa, it's just a trend to them.
@Misstexas08 I don't talk about the blackface but about the dresses. And face or body painting IS an African Tradition ! I come from the Comoros Island and during the weddings or important ceremonies women paint their faces, this is a tradition.
"she cares only about attention and money" this is a serious accusation ! Who are you to say that ? GOd ? please stop this is ridiculous. Yes she was inspired by Fela, how is that a problem ? Like a said, please stop putting us as victims.
@QueenBeyonceAddict remember that Africa is a continent and not a country, meaning if you are going to say this is an African tradition then specify what country, tribe it's coming from, I have been to many west african weddings and we don't paint our faces, yes I looved the attire because it's modern african wear. But what you seem to miss is my point that "B" is an entertainer and that is her job her income. Anyways I checked you page and I see that you are really obsessed with this women....
@QueenBeyonceAddict at this point I really don't care about this as much as you do, so keep on worrying and defending beyonce as if she is your relative,
um yall do understand that she only did like 2 shots with dark skin the rest of the shots were her regular skin colour. isn't that showing diversity? yall are way too sensitive God.
what it is really offensive is black people who are ashamed of African culture and traditions.
You wanna play the victim, do it but don't put every black people in your victimization.
I'm proud of my culture, my traditions, and I'm proud to see my aunt wearing african traditional clothes. I'm really shocked because to you african tradition clothes represent primitive, savage beast. i'm really shocked because you're ashamed of your own backgrounds.
I also have some african dresses and i'm proud to wear them because this is my ancestors tradition and culture. You can't understand because you have your own History, but a LOT of african singers wear this kind of outfit, this king of traditional outfits and this is the topic of the photoshoot "AFRICAN QUEEN" not African American Queen.
We also wear them in the traditionals weddings. This is not offensive, this is a tribute to our traditions and culture.
Who cares? For the most part, all black people do is put each other down, call each other names, look for each others shortcomings, set each other up and on and on and on. then they want to whine and complain and act like the perpetual victim without correcting their conduct towards the Creator, themselves and one another. Beyonce is just one person. YOU CAN'T BE ALL THINGS FOR ALL PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME. NO ONE CAN. The only ONE that can do this is THE CREATOR! We need to focus on what matters
I see Beyonce's shooting as a way to say "F*CK THOSE WHO THINK THAT PAINTING THEIR FACES IN BLACK CAN BE INSULTING, LOOK AT ME IM LOOKING LIKE A BEAUTIFUL QUEEN." Just like Blacks used the term "nigger" and change his very signification.
2) She is supposed to represent Black Beauty in this shooting (from light-skinned to dark-skinned)
3) Facial painting is an African Art
4) Fela Kuti (who was the THEME of this photoshooting) himself painted his face
3) The comparison with "minstrel shows" is insulting because the minstrel was made in order to insult Blacks. While Beyonce's shooting REPRESENT AFRICAN BEAUTY.
Her father (matthew knowles) cried racism when she didn't win a golden globe award. And if he felt that way, beyonce most likely felt the same. But it's okay for them to express their views..huh? And accuse people of being racist HA!
People are entitled to their own opinions and some people feel what she did was offensive. On a different note, i'm absolutely sick and tired of black people being condemned just for expressing their views--i'm absolutely sick of it! Whites have been sticking together for ages, what does that have to do with beyonce? Whites also don't make a MOCKERY OF THEIR RACE. The personal attacks towards people is irrelevant. Far as MJ whites tore him to pieces and accused him of the most heinous things.
and how is this offensive ? If a white girl paint her face in white, would you think the same ?
I'm black and I'm not a victim, she does everything she wants and this is a good job, this is art. They wanted to show every faces of Africa and this is a tribute to Fela Kuti. I don't know why do you think this is offensive. Black people are like anybody else, stop putting us into a victim position, we're not victims !
beyonce is so smart ,,,the thing that has helped her survive and become the star she is because she dont respond the this type of stuff ,,she dont give a fuck about yall,,,,and thats the way she should keep it ,,cause yall life fuck up ,,now yall want to fuck up everybody else life ,,,,fuck off
dam beyonce everything you do is wrong !!! you are still not good enough for your on ppl ,,so wasnt macheal jackson ,,hell every black succeful person ,,maybe thats why we dont have that many sucessful black ppl ,,because we bring them down ,,its not the wht folks its the black ones,,,you dont see the wht folks doing that too they ppl ,,they support them for who they are and go out and buy ther music instead of stealing it from downloads ,,,,ppl yall are wronng for attacking her on this shit !!
@AnthroItIs I agree, but i must say when i first saw the images i wasn't offended by it., but the deeper i dig the images are very offensive and i think that there is a derogatory hidden message behind them. Period, point, blank.
I had to vent. I know I wrote a lot. But it’s something I have noticed, and I’m getting sick of it. I hate being pigeon holed. I hate being told there is one African way... One skin tone, one hair style, one dress. I wasn’t consulted on any of these things. Art?!? Please. We are still using words given to us to describe ourselves...ethnic, colourfull, vibrant... ridiculous... Being black is what you want to be. Being happy about who you are. ... I’d better stop. I’ll be writing forever.
@zonjordan Thanks for your input... I do wish we owned more... and someone once brought up to me: Why is it so easy to learn a european language in school, but no offered african languages/dialects.
We definitely need to get our representation up
But on second thought, if I were to learn Woluf or Zulu... where would I use it?
@TonyaTko You are right. I use the languages just at home. But one thing some of us have started saying is we need to adopt a different policy. In fact when I went to Italy on holiday, I remember thinking how you had to learn Italian to get around. Because of colonisation we know English, or French etc. So when doing things internationally we speak in English. We need to prioritise our own languages.
@TonyaTko I can speak my own but since my father worked in Ivory Coast I was born there and went to an international school. Essentially American. My parents thought it was silly that we live on the Mother land but are learning American history, so we went back home after 9 years.. So really there is a lot that needs to happen. Once Africa opens up a bit more we will emphasise our own language.
@TonyaTko The same way you have to learn a language to get around in some countries you will have to do the same here. I’ve often thought it would be nice idea having African Americans come on holiday and while here learn more than just the slave trade but about Africa as it is now...
Do you idiots know the origin of the so called AFRICAN attire? Do you know one of the objectives during the colonial days was to ‘dress our servants from head to toe in our clothes’. I have relatives who are so light you’d think they were clear. I understand wanting to find yourself, don’t get me wrong. But learn one of the languages instead of darkening your face, or wear so called African clothes.
FOURTH: Africa is massive! Next time anyone wants to get in contact with their roots they should ask us first. I reiterate, BIENG BLACK IS NOT JUST SKIN DEEP. Look at the tribes in Sudan, and then compare them with the tribes in southern Africa. Khoisan people and the Dinka for example. There are more extreme differences than that. What beyonce did was a white version of Africa. We come in all shapes sizes and tones.
You come out looking like a fucking snow flake, then the next week, you do this. Coincidence, I think not. The fact is you were attractive anyway, so you getting lighter won’t change that. You obviously think differently.
Then go and pick the lightest black girl they can find.
THIRD: oh Beyonce Beyonce. I have lived all over Africa, Nigeria included. Personally we have enough beautiful women to do this shoot. What I can’t stand is that you have been getting lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter. You have joined a fucking long list of people who don’t get enough sun suddenly. I’m not an idiot.
. I agree, in general darker skinned women have been given a bad rap, I’ll tell you why. We as black people don’t own SHIT... magazines, the news, movies. Nothing... and we wonder why we aren’t represented well. When we do own a magazine we call it DARKNESS, or BLACKER THAN THOU, or something stupid. Let’s change our game. I give credit where credits due and white people are streets ahead in this area. When they own something they will call it something generic, like WOMEN DAYs, or FAIR LADY..
The pictures are gorgeous. Beyonce can't be in black face because she is black. She's done white face, but we don't complain about that. I think she looked like a model with the deeper skin tone.
Now they get pissed off when we call ourselves black because they feel ‘left out’.Not my fault. Suddenly there is a ‘black’ president and they are saying he should be called mixed.
SECOND: We are so caught up in skin tone we have started classifying ourselves as light skinned, dark skinned. We have lost the battle. We are doing exactly what they want. Yes maybe being light skinned made it easier for you to ‘make it’ but it wasn’t us who made it like this. We now fight amongst ourselves.
FIRST: What the fuck has skin tone got to do with being black, or celebrating heritage!!! I’m part South African, Zambian and Zimbabwean. This is in AFRICA by the way. Do you know there are naturally light black people here who aren’t mixed?? Living in the states has given you a warped sense of reality. The only time skin tone became an issue is when white people started classifying us. However they could never get themselves to call someone white who they knew had a bit of black in them.
Beyonce is so stupid, if she does not know anything about black history she should have asked her parents. Back in the day white people did this to mock and imitate black people because they would never give one a dime to play one. Don't she know how racist the french are, all they had to do was feed her some bullshit lie about fashion and she was sold. So now I guess she thinks she is so white that she can do this? someone slap her please!!!
But with beyonce I didn't feel offended or ashamed because she payed tribute to someone from Nigeria and didn't come off as a coon. I've come to the conclusion that no matter what beyonce does, somehow she will receive negativity for everything she does. Honestly she looked beautiful as a dark skin woman and she did the same thing in dreamgirls but her whole body was painted.
I thought I would be offended but after hearing what you said I agree 100. Beyonce have always been criticized for looking too white and not being proud of her roots. Now when she does give credit it's a problem. I know it goes back into the days where white people would make fun of black people by painting black face and acting like fools.
i now this has nothing to doo with this videobut i dont no ho to tern to i dont want to speak to mi fameli mi life is teriblole and juste wen things got good he left me naw i have this thote ov ole i want to do is slit mi rist's and die
I think it's wonderful that Beyonce is identiying with her nubianism instead of the european trend all the time, that tends to be more marketable and acceptable in the mainstream. I am of a very similar skin tone to Beyonce, but regularly used my mothers (who is darker then me) makeup foundation diluted with some face cream because my West Indian roots are glorious & are worth celebrating! I spent my childhood wanting to look like my Mum because she is BEAUTIFUL.

If I got you right, I share your point of view. I mean, even though I'm white, I didn't think Beyoncé wanted to insult black people, as she is black herself. She just wanted to give tribute to her native nationality, or however you want to put it. It wasn't her intention to make jokes about "them"
I actually listened to this video now. People upset all over globe? When did this happen? The newspaper is upset by this an needs an a cuddle lol An media disciples who allow media to determine there feelings
dont get people tired with that crap discussion !!! Beyoncé is so amazing with that very black face! you are all stupid to fight about that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
beyonce you go girl, maybe this will make black americans start to question themselves and why they hate themselves so much over this skin tone issue.. it has nothing to do with whites its about blacks hating themselves cos the darker the skin tone, the closer it gets to the african roots it came from .. "pretty for a dark skinned girl" has got to go just like the N WORD HAS TO BE EXTERMINATED. neither attidutes do blacks any good.. GO B.. do your thing girl...
As an african i dont consider it to be insulting why is it insulting here? she is acknowledging the reason she has a dark skin and some african features. most black americans will do anything to wipe that part of them off their faces and she is embracing it makes a change.. any one who is hating on her is of course hating on themselves.. sorry about that you cant remove the reason you are black here, doesnt matter what.. you look like us, because your ancestry came from us.. end of story.
i think we shld take pride n our race n pay special attn to uplifting our own given that our troubled past still follows us w/ racism w/in our own race. Thats y I feel so strongly about supporting her decision to celebrate difrnt shades w/in our race bc we have ignorant A-holes like lil wayne who degrade dark skin constantly! It is so appropriate right now while all thse rappers r telling little girls tht light skin is better that she says oppsite!
why is it insulting that she put on black paint? maybe it shall remind us that even darker people, darker women r also beautiful. especially deep rooted africans r often called ugly because they r not that light. stop hating!!! BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL! is it ur prob if she put on paint on her face? i dont get u. this paint shall remind us that all african americans n africans have the same roots. WE ARE BLACKS, no matter how light or how dark.
The only thing I disagreed with was your Lil Wayne point only because he was talking about red, as in bloods and cribs. He likes to promote "gang-life" as part of his "image". It wasn't about him wanting a "red-bone" in that case but other than that, great job.
@FemaleVocalLover1975 Please open your eyes... Little wayne was talking about light vs. Dark women. Please look up the interview where he answered the outcry against his lyric. And he openly responded... look into it instead of just screaming out any ole thing.
@TonyaTko And kudos to you explaining as in depth on the dynamic of black-face because people putting what Beyonce did on the same level as what you describe actually lessens the impact of what blackface minstrel really is. It's not the same, nowhere near the same and it is a sad that a beautiful photo shoot turned into this. I am a Beyonce fan, but it wouldn't matter who the entertainer/celeb is...being objective, I would have saw it the same way.
Thank you for this post and I can even understand your point about not seeing Bey's africanness in her features. In fact, it makes your POV stronger because even as your not necessarily a fan of hers, you are able to put aside that to see what she for what it is. Kudos to you for this because not everyone can do this.
@FemaleVocalLover1975 Well, since making this video and talking with people, I see the folly of my ways by not really noticing her African features... But in my defense, she is often photoshopped to have a more narrow nose, thinner lips etc
It's fun to play with fashion and makeup, and fashion has a history of provocation and pushing boundaries. But when you paint your face darker in order to look more 'African,' aren't you reducing an entire continent, full of different nations, tribes, cultures and histories, into one brown color?"

Chocl8 7 months ago

BReddTJ92 8 months ago
Tonya that was definitely black face. The exaggerated features developed later. They painted Beyonce a darker shade of brown in Dream Girls. Remember the photog segment? But they painted her entire body. Beyonce looked so beautiful when they did it that way. But this definitely had some underlying motives behind. You'll find that many skin bleaching creams are made in France.

- Tragic
0oMrsDeMaRo0 10 months ago
@0oMrsDeMaRo0 I'm not sure if the best way to pay tribute to your grandfather is to come on the internet cursing and carrying on. I know death hurts. But dont concentrate on why he DIED, think about why he LIVED. And you'll see that the things you were meant to get from him you have gotten, the rest you have to branch off on your own. Nothing is permanent so we have to give thanks to what we have while we have it.
Carpe Diem. Seize the day.
And I know from experience that ppl never really "Die"

TragicFlower666 10 months ago
@TragicFlower666 I dont have the time time to play. I thought your tutorials were creative. The zombie one reminded me of something from wes craven. I think there is a certain type of beauty in that type of "dark" art... when I was in Turkey I went to a bar which had a HUGE painting of a young vampiress on the floor in a beautiful venitian frock crying two streams of blood, and it was one of THE MOST painfully breathtaking murals I have Ever seen. I only wish I had taken a picture of it
-Tko
TonyaTko 10 months ago

Dark skin is NOT humiliating. Its Beautiful.

Beyonce herself is fake, she wears nothing but wigs, heavy make-up, I meant putting it on looks ridiculous, I said nothing about that, thanks for twisting my words. Thumbs up!

If you open ur mind and listen, not hear, to the opinions, comments, disscussions about blks here in America u will see its very negative. Its not about being insulted by darkening the face, its the image that she is projecting about Africa by doing what she did.

Satansoppressed 1 year ago
@Satansoppressed With all of this dark skinned racism projected unto us i can only imagine WHY SOMEONE WOULD BE IN A FUCKING STATE OF IDENTITY CRISIS!!!!
kaliyuta 1 year ago

Strange Creole is a combination of the African ancestry/west indie ancestry/French ancestry.Interesting how you come up with that describing all but "some" "lit-skin-ded folks".I have none of those combination's in my background and neither does beyonce .So these statements are all from hate.
kaliyuta 1 year ago
@kaliyuta Black is not a socio-economic status (except in America). You cannot be socially Black. Just because a person is poor, doesn't make them Black. Struggle doesn't make you Black. PHYSICAL TRAITS make a person Black. The traits are dark skin and, often, coarse hair. There are Blacks that have different hair types. I'm not being racist. You are American, be proud of that! Just be American. Don't try to get Black approval like beyonce. That pisses Black people off as you can see.
Satansoppressed 1 year ago
@Satansoppressed Interesting tactic and logic you have it's shame you think we're all alike and so therefore u must think I Am just feeble frail lite skinned creole confused witch that can't see your blatant racist comments for what they actually are and have the spirit fire enough to call it out.I never stated that "Black is a socio-economic status, being poor,or "The Struggle" makes someone "Black".I am stating the fact that you are projecting serious racist hate statements on bi-racial people
kaliyuta 1 year ago
@Satansoppressed Me calling these statements out as pure racism that for some reason is racism that "don't count",it most certainly does not mean that i am trying to prove myself or am trying to "seek black approval like Beyonce" Once again I am a human being not a racial genetic mutant crossbreed circus freak for insecure self hating darker complected black people to poor out all of their deep from slavery hatred on any and everyone that looks like me.Why would i want to seek approval at all
kaliyuta 1 year ago

Satansoppressed 1 year ago
@kaliyuta I guess the issue here is the difference between ALL light skinned people and "some". I'm talking about some, not ALL.
Satansoppressed 1 year ago

QueenBeyonceAddict 1 year ago
@QueenBeyonceAddict Um... was it really necessary to say "You African Americans make me sick?"
Sentiments like that plague the Black community.
Why be so divisive from one side of your mouth, while talking about unity from the other.

Misstexas08 1 year ago
Respond to this video... As an african, this is NOT african tradition, just because her and solange have been wearing african attire of late, doesn't mean they care about YOU or Africa, it's just a trend to them.
Misstexas08 1 year ago
@Misstexas08 I don't talk about the blackface but about the dresses. And face or body painting IS an African Tradition ! I come from the Comoros Island and during the weddings or important ceremonies women paint their faces, this is a tradition.
"she cares only about attention and money" this is a serious accusation ! Who are you to say that ? GOd ? please stop this is ridiculous. Yes she was inspired by Fela, how is that a problem ? Like a said, please stop putting us as victims.
QueenBeyonceAddict 1 year ago
@QueenBeyonceAddict remember that Africa is a continent and not a country, meaning if you are going to say this is an African tradition then specify what country, tribe it's coming from, I have been to many west african weddings and we don't paint our faces, yes I looved the attire because it's modern african wear. But what you seem to miss is my point that "B" is an entertainer and that is her job her income. Anyways I checked you page and I see that you are really obsessed with this women....

what it is really offensive is black people who are ashamed of African culture and traditions.
QueenBeyonceAddict 1 year ago
@AnthroItIs

I see Beyonce's shooting as a way to say "F*CK THOSE WHO THINK THAT PAINTING THEIR FACES IN BLACK CAN BE INSULTING, LOOK AT ME IM LOOKING LIKE A BEAUTIFUL QUEEN." Just like Blacks used the term "nigger" and change his very signification.
thereason93 1 year ago
And u have to know that the stylists who made this shooting WERE ALL BLACKS. SO WTF?
thereason93 1 year ago
IT CAN'T BE INSULTING BECAUSE:
1) Beyonce is Black
2) She is supposed to represent Black Beauty in this shooting (from light-skinned to dark-skinned)
3) Facial painting is an African Art
4) Fela Kuti (who was the THEME of this photoshooting) himself painted his face
3) The comparison with "minstrel shows" is insulting because the minstrel was made in order to insult Blacks. While Beyonce's shooting REPRESENT AFRICAN BEAUTY.
STOP HATING PPL. U R JUST IGNORANT.
thereason93 1 year ago 2
Her father (matthew knowles) cried racism when she didn't win a golden globe award. And if he felt that way, beyonce most likely felt the same. But it's okay for them to express their views..huh? And accuse people of being racist HA!
daisylicious101 1 year ago
People are entitled to their own opinions and some people feel what she did was offensive. On a different note, i'm absolutely sick and tired of black people being condemned just for expressing their views--i'm absolutely sick of it! Whites have been sticking together for ages, what does that have to do with beyonce? Whites also don't make a MOCKERY OF THEIR RACE. The personal attacks towards people is irrelevant. Far as MJ whites tore him to pieces and accused him of the most heinous things.
daisylicious101 1 year ago
@AnthroItIs
and how is this offensive ? If a white girl paint her face in white, would you think the same ?
I'm black and I'm not a victim, she does everything she wants and this is a good job, this is art. They wanted to show every faces of Africa and this is a tribute to Fela Kuti. I don't know why do you think this is offensive. Black people are like anybody else, stop putting us into a victim position, we're not victims !

We've got to get our int'l power up.
-Tko
TonyaTko 1 year ago
@TonyaTko You are right. I use the languages just at home. But one thing some of us have started saying is we need to adopt a different policy. In fact when I went to Italy on holiday, I remember thinking how you had to learn Italian to get around. Because of colonisation we know English, or French etc. So when doing things internationally we speak in English. We need to prioritise our own languages.
zonjordan 1 year ago
@TonyaTko I can speak my own but since my father worked in Ivory Coast I was born there and went to an international school. Essentially American. My parents thought it was silly that we live on the Mother land but are learning American history, so we went back home after 9 years.. So really there is a lot that needs to happen. Once Africa opens up a bit more we will emphasise our own language.
zonjordan 1 year ago
@TonyaTko The same way you have to learn a language to get around in some countries you will have to do the same here. I’ve often thought it would be nice idea having African Americans come on holiday and while here learn more than just the slave trade but about Africa as it is now...
zonjordan 1 year ago
Do you idiots know the origin of the so called AFRICAN attire? Do you know one of the objectives during the colonial days was to ‘dress our servants from head to toe in our clothes’. I have relatives who are so light you’d think they were clear. I understand wanting to find yourself, don’t get me wrong. But learn one of the languages instead of darkening your face, or wear so called African clothes.
zonjordan 1 year ago
FOURTH: Africa is massive! Next time anyone wants to get in contact with their roots they should ask us first. I reiterate, BIENG BLACK IS NOT JUST SKIN DEEP. Look at the tribes in Sudan, and then compare them with the tribes in southern Africa. Khoisan people and the Dinka for example. There are more extreme differences than that. What beyonce did was a white version of Africa. We come in all shapes sizes and tones.
zonjordan 1 year ago
You come out looking like a fucking snow flake, then the next week, you do this. Coincidence, I think not. The fact is you were attractive anyway, so you getting lighter won’t change that. You obviously think differently.
zonjordan 1 year ago
Then go and pick the lightest black girl they can find.
THIRD: oh Beyonce Beyonce. I have lived all over Africa, Nigeria included. Personally we have enough beautiful women to do this shoot. What I can’t stand is that you have been getting lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter and lighter. You have joined a fucking long list of people who don’t get enough sun suddenly. I’m not an idiot.
zonjordan 1 year ago
When they own something they will call it something generic, like WOMEN DAYs, or FAIR LADY..
zonjordan 1 year ago 2
The pictures are gorgeous. Beyonce can't be in black face because she is black. She's done white face, but we don't complain about that. I think she looked like a model with the deeper skin tone.
mitesser80 1 year ago
Now they get pissed off when we call ourselves black because they feel ‘left out’.Not my fault. Suddenly there is a ‘black’ president and they are saying he should be called mixed.
SECOND: We are so caught up in skin tone we have started classifying ourselves as light skinned, dark skinned. We have lost the battle. We are doing exactly what they want. Yes maybe being light skinned made it easier for you to ‘make it’ but it wasn’t us who made it like this. We now fight amongst ourselves.
zonjordan 1 year ago 2

PalaisCristalLLC 1 year ago
But with beyonce I didn't feel offended or ashamed because she payed tribute to someone from Nigeria and didn't come off as a coon. I've come to the conclusion that no matter what beyonce does, somehow she will receive negativity for everything she does. Honestly she looked beautiful as a dark skin woman and she did the same thing in dreamgirls but her whole body was painted.
bigvinamac 1 year ago
I thought I would be offended but after hearing what you said I agree 100. Beyonce have always been criticized for looking too white and not being proud of her roots. Now when she does give credit it's a problem. I know it goes back into the days where white people would make fun of black people by painting black face and acting like fools.

It wasn't her intention to make jokes about "them"

beyonce you go girl, maybe this will make black americans start to question themselves and why they hate themselves so much over this skin tone issue.. it has nothing to do with whites its about blacks hating themselves cos the darker the skin tone, the closer it gets to the african roots it came from ..

It's fun to play with fashion and makeup, and fashion has a history of provocation and pushing boundaries. But when you paint your face darker in order to look more 'African,' aren't you reducing an entire continent, full of different nations, tribes, cultures and histories, into one brown color?"
