Note: those platters are often aluminum, but they might be ceramic or GLASS. So some caution might be called for. No matter what the disk is made of, it is coated so it's hard to tell.

More trivia: the coating is typically a cobalt-platinum-chrome alloy, most likely rich in cobalt since that's the most "magnetic." Platinum is one of the least "magnetic" metals.

The disk and its coating must be insanely flat, which makes it such an accurate mirror.

Nice. BTW, the hard drive motor,like CD ROM, floppy drive motors are brushless motors.Once you took out the board, you need a controller to reuse the motor. brushless motor controller on electric remote control model planes are the same type and can be used to run those hard drive motors.
