When you become blind, your other senses become hypersensitive and so they can perform much more efficiently. Added with the fact that his body and brain were still developing his brain grows in a unique way that allows this use of his extraordinary senses to perform echolocation.
Guys, they have software that reads text out for blind people, and braille keyboards. And the video has sound -- its just like listening to a radio report. You just watched a video about a blind kid able to play video games -- a blind person using the internet isn't exactly rocket science. Lol.
Ben passed away on January 19, 2009 at age of 16. He was taken by the same cancer that claimed his sight and leaves behind a legacy of inspiration few will ever match.
I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
Echolocation is actually easy to learn, just hard to master. Walk to a room in your house slowly with your eyes closed and make clickigng sounds while facing the wall at about 5 inches away. I guarantee once you reach the door frame of the room, you will hear a different echo.
@GOHARDSWorld ye second time you see him play and ye it was buu v ss4 gogeta. but still dont get how he plays. cause he was against the elite 4 in one of the vids
This kid was so full of himself, and for a blind person was very self conscious with not wanting to use a cain, and putting 99% of everyone else at risk for hitting him in the streets when he "knows where he's going" and walking in circles in a intersection. Seriously this kid got way to much credit.
@jcostello117 ... I don't like to speak ill of dead people unless they did something legitimately wrong. But that's just me. AND. I'm not going to start an internet battle with someone I have never met before. LALWZ
@Shortkid110 are you KIDDING me?? they showed him skating right into parked cars AND getting lost because he was too busy showing off for the cameras! He could not rollerblade, if I lived on his block I would have the cops called so I wouldnt have bother screaming at him to get out of the damn street, maybe I would hit him just to teach him a valuable life lesson.
@jcostello117 I just watched the whole video, and I didn't see him almost hit a parked car. Please, elaborate, just show us where he almost hit a parked car.
@Shortkid110 damnit ok, if its not in this one its in another one as I watched a few of these vids on youtube. I'll try to find it but I swear, I may talk shit about a dead blind kid, but I DO NOT lie! He didnt almost hit it either, he nailed it. =D
damn the cancer must have pimped his auditory cortex somehow or something but of course sad he cant make sound frequency above 20K Hz like bats and hear the echo

Incredible! It is a good video and also quite touching. I like how Ben's mother and the ophthalmologist comment about Ben's attitude. Also, kudos to his mother. She is such a brave and positive lady.
@hardstyle905 One possability is the use of stereoscopic surround sound...with enough sounds around you the young man may well be able to detect the sounds clearly than a person with sight as his hearing is more hightened. If this is the case...credit to him and the game creators for getting things spot on.
@PhuckHue2 Really now I call BS on you you do not know what you are talking about...Not saying that we do not have that ability but thinking that because someone is blind that it is automatically magnified a thousand times is like saying God gives blind ppl better hearing
Let me tell you how you can tell where a person is located on a tv? Yeah they have different voices but dude there is no way to know where they exactly are. I can see playing some games but nah.
@kermitdfrogz no. he is an anomaly. if everyone became blind tomorrow, only he and others like him would survive. then they would procreate, and the human species would all have the same abilities. evolution at work.
That's the problem: Everyone else would have to have that change for a trait like that to excel; and a sudden change, in the species or in the environment will never leave viable candidates to ensure that those traits will thrive, even if the anomaly or mutation is transferable in the first place. Traits have already been "pre-engineered" (for a lack of a better term) in organisms. You can get any breed of dog within a few generations of a wolf when you use beta wolves, for example.
Why arent there people, who arent blind but still developed echolocation? I think developing some technology to make people with eyesight to also have echolocation would be one of the most important things on earth.
very very sad that he died, people don't deserve to be treated like this by life he better be in better place seriously if someone deserves to then its him.
yes, I used acoustics to tell how big the room was, how far from me the wall was, whether something was full or empty, what it was made from etc... I have meaning blindness, I saw fine but couldn't recognise what I see and couldn't see rooms or objects as a whole.
And from the serious point I was making, you chose to pick on my games console not being entirely accurate.
And yes I understand a computer is more than a games console.
You are a moron. That is - was - an exceptionally talented boy who never gave up and managed to do things other people in his situation would never have dreamed of doing. The PS2 is not the point.

Plus I think our converstaion is proof that on Youtube you can actually have a discussion without resorting to insults like soooo many other people do!
The real story is...the mind has no limitations and by hindering our children and telling them what they can and can't do is the limiter. The mind has a capacity that we cannot comprehend.
Though at first resistant to using a cane for mobility, seeing it as a "handi-capped" device, and considering himself "not handicapped at all", Daniel Kish demonstrated to Underwood how he utilized his white cane combined with echolocation to further expand his mobility, though Underwood never adopted this method.[12]
Underwood died on January 19, 2009 at the age of 16, from the same cancer that took his sight.[17]
Watch the vid again and pay attention...he uses the sound from the game to know what he's doing. to quote him, "they have different voices". Plus you can see he's playing a fighting game. I can see how voices and sounds would work there...punches hitting or not...etc. but theres no way in hell this kid could play say...need for speed or call of duty or something of that matter. Actually, now that I think about it...fighting games would really be the only way this kid could play anything
I bet with a surround sound system this kid could could have been mad good at a whole bunch of games. After learning a level layout sufficiently from rumble in the controller he would have been near unstoppable because sound can position anything... I tip my hat to his fearlessness... stupid cancer

Such a fantastic inspirational person and his mother a true
Queen of a person. So sad he died so young, when he had so much to offer the world.

The real story is...the mind has no limitations and by hindering our children and telling them what they can and can't do is the limiter. The mind has a capacity that we cannot comprehend.

Ben Underwood
Though at first resistant to using a cane for mobility, seeing it as a "handi-capped" device, and considering himself "not handicapped at all", Daniel Kish demonstrated to Underwood how he utilized his white cane combined with echolocation to further expand his mobility, though Underwood never adopted this method.[12]
Underwood died on January 19, 2009 at the age of 16, from the same cancer that took his sight.[17]

Uum- not being funny, but how would echolocation help someone playing a video game on a static screen?

I tip my hat to his fearlessness... stupid cancer

tfsahaodj, he did not use echolocation for video games..He had several ways of ''seeing'' and one of them are sounds. Thats how he played videogames
