This happened to me with game shark awhile ago too and I could not find another instance of this happening on the internet. It might have something to do with using a non playable character cheat meant for multiplayer to do a single player game or campaign. At least erasing your data fixes it and it's not like there's much to unlock in this game.

If you used Gameshark you could probably fix this by going into the Gameshark editor and disable "force Mario" or something like that. I've played around with Gameshark on an N64 emulator, and I know you can even play as master hhand by forcing him in different modes.

I guess by erasing all your data this reset itself.

Dude, I have the same problem! I picked up my SSB game for the first time in years and, while multiplayer works fine, solo sets the default to Mario.  I hate to delete all my data but at least it wouldn't be as bad as deleting melee or brawl data.

My copy has a bug too. Where when I play lots and lots of battles at a time, it breaks. I can't jump, drop down, run, walk off ledges, or roll. It applies to the CPU players too. Clearing all data fixes it though.

Uh, if it forces you to have to play as a spicific character, you might have a cheat on. you dont have to erase all ur data just because of one little thing.

what you have to do is delete the main backup data, while, yes it will remove evrything that you gathered in the course of the game (stages, records, item switch) it lets you pick your own char

Stop recording.

Exit back to character selection screen.

Start record.

I had a similar situation happen to me. I used a metal mario gameshark code for vs. mode, and then the game choose mario every time for single player (not for vs mode), even without the gameshark. Just erase your single player mode data, and you should be able to select other characters.

This method solved the problem on my game.

it happened to mine too when my Gameshark glitched and and completely erased itself. My Ganeshark became an empty shell. I just figured it erased some info off of my game in the process
