I remembering hearing this song for the first time as a senior in high school. I really liked it a lot but didn't grasp the story that he's singing until I "grew up" and moved away from home, just like all of my friends. Now that I listen to it almost a decade later, everything has changed. "I never thought it'd be the way it is now" says it all.
