  • I agree with faythlen. If not sad, this song has been written with Joni Mitchell's personal words for expressing her troubled feelings about life and love (which I -and many people I'm sure- have at least once in our lives totally connected with), and H. W. interprets it without considering much the importance of the MEANING here. Not bad musically speaking. although kinda impersonal voice. I mean, it's cute but that's it. The emotion isn't there:she is not feeling what she's telling us.

  • sweet to look @....voice i cant get tired of

  • When is this girl going to learn that she can't put a saccharine happy slant on absolutely everything? She seems lost in a world of cheery emotionlessness. Did the same to Laschia chio pianga. Go ahead give me a thumbs down. I'm right.

  • @toopeelooo sounds like a typical arrogant pommie. You are so close to the grave that your musical appreciation is already dead.

  • @toopeelooo I cannot how some people have such narrow musical tastes. I love Joni Mitchell, but I also like Hayley's interpretations of Joni's songs (she sings several of them) . I like Stevie Nicks and Hayley's interpretation of Songbird. I dont particularly like Kate Bush but I can tolerate Hayley's interpretaion of Wuthering Heights. Most songs Hayley has written herself are in this genre. The amazing grace type things as you call them would be in the minority of the songs she sings.

  • forgive me hayley fans.held off watching this till now - not a bad job x joni would love it

  • Who is playing accoustic here?

AWESOME job, shows how good Joni really is........great work Hayley & co!

  • she looked and sounded a bit too happy for this song, which is very sad.

  • Very right!

  • It's bitter sweet.

  • Wow! What a voice of an angel :D

It's artists like her who should be given more credit than what we have in the charts right now

  • I love both versions, and you know what? Instead of pitting each version against each other, how about enjoying and appreciating what each UNIQUE artist has brought to this song???

  • Well said! I totally agree! 5* comment!

  • @dalanor69 I couldn't agree more. Hayley's voice gives me chills every time I hear her sing. It is so beautiful, but that does not take away from other renditions of the song. Each of the great artists bring something new to it.

  • i love her voice

  • lol

  • beautiful voice

  • Hayley has a very sweet voice and does a nice job with this cover. I listened to a couple of other cuts of Hayley on YT. Right now there is really only surface "soul" in her singing, for me at least. She's young, and there's nothing stopping her developing. If she ever really does find that depth, she will be an exceptional singer.

  • AAH! No commercials!! Noooohoooooohoooo!!!

  • If I could fall in love, it would be with a woman that could sing Both Sides now, by Joni Mitchell. You sang it and you sang it better then Joni. :)

  • Oooooh dear... No, you didn't.

  • Wonderful song, Beautiful voice. *****

  • Truly amazing, I closed my eyes and Hayley opened my heart.

  • I love this version,

  • Yes, angels really do walk among us.

  • nice job on a classic song.... beautiful voice....

  • she is very lovely. had i been young, i would easily fall in love with her.

  • I absolutely LOVE this song....and Hayley :] *happy sigh*

  • Whatever the critics...I love Hayley very much..Just enjoy her voice guys :D

  • Hello Hayley, If you come across this message, I want you to know that youre my first love Singer...

  • The One And Only , Lovely HAYLEY ...

  • I don't understand why people mark critical comments with a thumbs down. They were all constructive, non-slanderous remarks.

This song is supposed to melancholy...this version just doesn't do it justice.

  • i like responding to my own comments just like millie

  • amazing

  • here's your dept. idiot

  • Been watching Haley perform this song over and over. I just don't get the responses saying she shows no emotion. I see many emotions as she sings this song. This is such a classic sung by Bing Crosby, Andy Williams and a host of others. Haley does a great job. But I still like the version by Denver,Boise and Johnson

  • I'm partial to Nimoy's version myself xD

  • LMAO were learning this song in class!

  • Hayley Westenra IS Simply The BEST.

  • I like her voice,It is touching.

  • Gorgeous version of a classic. Quite possibly the best version, period. She's quite the singer.

  • A beautiful version of a beautiful song.

  • Wonderfull song and voice ....

  • It's nice to see a young singer doing some great music.

  • I don't know why THIS particular song causes so many arguments. Serious, people, it's just a song! It's meant for enjoyment, sweet angry Jezus..

  • Good God, steerpike66. How about just enjoying a beautiful song? Damn.

  • I agree... she has a beautiful voice and is a talented artist without a doubt, but she doesn't give this song the dept it needs.

  • Truly captivating Hayley, Thank you so much!! :)

  • My new favourite song

  • What a beautiful voice!

    a wonderful song!

    A great video!

  • i like htis one much better than the original =)

  • i was surprised i'll give ya that, but better than judy back in the day? check out susannah hoffs singing beat of a different drummer. compare that to original.

  • this is very nice version :D but i still prefer low... perhaps out of envy, cuz i cant sing that high hehe......

  • CUNT!? what are u? a Hectic? call hayley dumb and song-wrecker?! how outrageous of you to over-snub this highly talented soprano!!!!

  • she is very talented... but her version has no dept to it.

  • I agree. I'd never heard this song before (call me a Philistine) and I thought it sounded lovely (Westenra has an exquisite voice) but then I checked out a video of Joni Mitchell from 1970 and realised what the song is about. This version is an effortless flow of gorgeous sounds, but I didn't hear the lyrics at all.

  • I agree Joni mitchell's early version was much better and less cheesy

  • when it comes to art, words like 'suppose' and 'rules' lose their meaning. you cant say that the song is suppose to be sad. there are all sorts of different interpretations to many great songs. it doesnt make them wrong.

  • Wonderful song, wonderful clip!

  • A lovely song,sung by an ANGEL

  • cuuuut!!(^^)

  • A very good rendition.. Very light.. easy going. Lifts my heart and spirits up. Makes me smile everytime I listen. I think I'm a Hayley Westenra now..

  • This was well done. This is a classic song and if you aren't careful one can screw it up if not done properly. For example, Bob Dylan could not sing this song.....wait a minute, he can't sing at all.

  • @WesMantooth73: Ha! Dylan was more of a poet/songwriter than a singer. This young lady sings this very well. She sings without shouting it out, which seems to be the norm in today's standard.

  • rather cheerful version compared to JM's one played in Love Actually...nicely done...

  • i love her lovely voice

  • its a cover ppl not a replacement-relax haley does a good job

  • I don't think Joni Mitchell minds Hayley's interpentation, in fact, I imagine she's more than pleased...

  • Joni was the original singer, and therefore knows the emotions you should put into the song. So ask HER, not Judy Collins.

  • This song was written for her, performed much better than the pop diva of yesteryear. Wonderful!

  • she is great!!

  • Better? Worse? Why not just say different. She is ....herself. She has a beautiful voice and brilliant future ahead of her.

  • I watched this video closely after reading Davidduckman's comment. I have to say, I disagree. I think she gets it just fine.

  • This is not as good as Joni. And I dont like her facial expressions. They dont fit this song. I dont think she gets it.

  • Comment removed

  • She's gorgeous!!! My idol all the way. I hope to meet her some day.

  • lol lol

  • better than judy collins or joni mitchell

  • This is my favorite version also. Another good version is by Denver, Boise and Johnson. You get to hear a young John Denver singing great harmonies. But Hayley is the best no doubt about it.

  • She's the kind of angel that roams the clear skies :P

  • beautiful song. i'd love to sing it!

  • i love al her songs.

i sing soprano to but i really can't sing so beautiful as her. she's a angel of music

  • Ive seen people write comments about other singers voices being angelic or they have a voice of an angle but Hayley truely does have a voice of an angle and is as beautiful as one too ! I do hope the world hears from her for years to come and some day a very lucky man will win her heart and I already envy that man she is truely a treasure

  • nice song sweet girl

  • :) This song is perfect. The words are so powerful.

  • This song is an old favorite from high school. Miss Westenra performs it beautifully. What an entrancing sweetness she has, and enhances an already beautiful song.

  • Faultless; a wonderful version!

  • great video and beautiful nz Hayley with her gorgeous voice. Makes my day

  • This is sung angelic by a beautiful singer.

Joni sang it, I also know the version of Roger Whittaker, but I love to hear the way she sings it as well.

    LOL Ernst from Holland

  • We used to sing this is grade school along with "This Land is Your Land", and "Puff the Magic Dragon"!

  • Haley Westenra, you have the voice of an angel. Absolutely flawless. You bring joy to my heart. This song was my very first solo when I was just 13. You are wonderful and are living my dream! :o)

  • The original is priceless but this version is so sweet and beautiful, I like both, its not simply whose singing it, its really the song for me, which leaves me breathless regardless

  • To those comparing Hayley's version to the others, I think that this is a totally different interpretation. She sings this song as more of an innocent who recognizing that she really doesn't yet understand love. The earlier versions are sung as more of a jilted lover would react. I also believe that Hayley has the best voice since Karen Carpenter.

  • I'm not afraid to say it right out loud... I LOVE YOU HAYLEY! Beautiful song sung by the voice (And face) of an angel. Those whom dare contrast her to Joni Mitchell should be advised that Judi Collins also covered this great song.

  • Why is it when someone gives their OPINION on here people take it so much to heart and choose to criticize the person making the observation!? Yes wintercat2, I AM on cheap drugs - it's called Lithium Carbonate. Heard of it? No? Then go F'ing figure and keep your comments to the music NOT directed at individuals!

  • Criticisms are opinions too. Why so serious? Stop doing what you preach.

  • by the looks of my comment i was having a ratty day. point taken. case closed

  • Great cover of a classic.

    Happy birthday Hayley, 22 today

  • Having listened to both the Joni Mitchell version and Hayley's, I think Hayley produces a better effort. That's only my opinion though but Joni sounded too "gravel" throated to me.

  • You must be on cheap drugs

  • Hayley Westenra - You are correct I too believe Hayley Westenra is much better or atleast better. And I don't do drugs.

  • Not even close to the 2006 Version from Joni Mitchell! Listen to the original!

  • 2006? The original of this song was released in 1969 and has been covered by many artists since then. What makes you think that Hayley was trying to me close to Joni's version? This is Hayley's own interpretation of the lyrics.

  • My favorite part of Hayley singing is that she has such amazing control of here voice and achieves it effortlessly.

  • She has a beautiful voice. The way she controls her voice is amazing!

  • i really like this... its not ONLY those high tunes wich are very good and nice and everything, but ist the variety, that makes a good song for me. and this got everything needed for a good song ;)

not my usual music, but well... cant listen metal, punk and ska all the time^^

  • 1:07 beautiful :) I'm so used to the "scarborough fair" sound, which I love, but I like this now, it almost shocked me when she stated singing because it was so different from what I've heard from her previously.

  • angel sound~

  • :) Brilliant .

  • She is lovely. And I love her music!

  • Only because she is a pure woman!

  • mmmmmmmmmmm man that guy was yummy. I am surprised nobody has commented on that yet!lol :P

  • Wasn't she in Celtic Woman?

  • Yes, she was a late addition when one of the others went out for a maternity leave. I have no idea if she still tours with the group.

  • beautiful voice

  • I like both versions of this song. The sad one that Joni sings, then this somewhat happier version. I refuse to say one is better then the other, because I think they're both great in their own way. They both have a different meaning, and both sang by talented artists.

  • blueskyatnight1. read my comments to redrob67. Think outside the square a little.

  • rynerich. In my earlier comment I stated that Hayley has a beautiful voice but that I preferred the original version. This is my personal opinion, just because you don't share the same opinion as me, it doesn't make my opinion any less valid than yours. We don't actually have to share the same opinion. It's ok, why don't you just try thinking "outside the square a little" (the correct saying is "think outside the box" by the way)

  • blueskyatnight1.

type "outside the square" into google and you mightactually get educated

  • Sorry, but as beautiful as Hayley's voice is, this version does the song no justice whatsoever.

This isn't a 'sunshine after the rain' type song. It's very a much a melancholic 'end-of-the-affair' song.

Hayley's version of 'Danny Boy'; now that's a great interpretation of a classic song.

  • redrob67. You are too tied up in Joni Mitchell's version looking back on life. I think Hayley has interpreted from the viewpoint of a young girl looking forward what is too come in her life. Both versions are equally valid.

  • oh wow, a UMG owned song thats not muted!

  • Good song, very good voice.

However i feel she misses the meaning of this song and changes it to a more happy beat.. it isn't exactly a happy song.

  • Such talent! And she's so beautiful too...!

  • rock music lasts so long, maybe around half a year. about 10 years max. but many of her music probably sound classic even after she's dead.

  • Marry me Hayley!!! xxx

  • Brothers Four have performed this song , and hayley , is sounds like two different , both so beautiful , I am sure Hayley version will be another long last Golden Record in the future.

  • I love you Hayley... I'm looking Your CD in Italy.

  • Voice like diamonds over black velvet. Seems like she is a good girl also.

  • Mnie się też bardzo podoba!

  • New Zealand talent at its best!

  • Simple and beautiful x

  • incredible

  • Hayley has an amazing voice. It is crystal clear!

  • Hayley is very special. I loved it.

  • ona jest zajebista... jak bedzie jakis koncert w PL to prosze o wpis

  • Wonderful video!!!

  • WOW, I loved it, MAXIMALLY. What is wrong with people that they can so easily criticise something that they could never come close to.

I would love an amazing Bible quote that could silence the detractors of some awesome Brilliance.

  • Hayley Westenra is miracle!

I thank God that I was born in the same world as hers!!

  • She's been blessed with a wonderful talent, it's true.

  • The best version of this song I've ever heard! Very beautifully done. She has a lovely voice and the instrumentation is lush and gorgeous.

  • i wanna go out with hayley :)

  • Nobody is taking it away from Joni Mitchell, but she was of a different time and times change as the song suggests so let them both be lauded for singing the song.

  • I agree that she has a lovely voice, but I too, like Joni's version better. Maybe it's because Joni wrote it, so it has more meaning for her, and therefore Joni sings it more with feeling, rather than just mouthing the words.

  • Haley Westenra comes from the city of Christchurch, New Zealand.

  • "Blood" - Not Bolld --- Apologies!!

  • U'd know that there's Irish bolld running in her veins...!! She's a talent..!

  • A talent yes indeed. You should hear her rendition of "Danny Boy". My compliments to you!
