The majority of money earned through album sales goes to the record producers. It is one of the reasons why smaller artists have trouble breaking out. Even selling albums they don't get enough money to foot the bill to tour as much as they would like. The best way for these bands to break out is the free plugging they get from places like Youtube or even people who have illegally downloaded their music. The fact is, it is very hard for smaller amazing bands like this to break out. Too bad.
No, they are not... It financially hurts the artist if you don't buy it. Touring for smaller bands has become really hard due to the fact everyone downloads causing them to financially suffer, So those who download are hurting those interested in seeing Live shows.
@Gulli05 Piracy actually does a lot less harm than you'd think. I wrote a college research paper on it and even the professional musicians I interviewed told me that it doesn't effect their income very much. One of them practically told me to go out and download their albums if I want to. You have to take into consideration the fact that most of the people who download music illegally are ones that would not have bought the album in the first place so no money is lost; it just isn't gained.
Actually CD sales do NOTHING for small bands. I myself am in a band that earns money and we do so through playing shows and selling merchandise. In fact we encourage downloading our music because it allows us to reach a larger audience without trying very hard. Its much easier for a guy to download our CD 4 states away rather than us try to get our album in that city in a store. Its actually more money wasted on us if we attempted that.
@lhsu This is true. BUT, Seventh Wonder is not actually that small, they are quite known among prog metal enthusiasts. Especially considering how fucked over they got by St. Andrews booking (the agency basically took the money they were supposed to get for playing prog/power and ran). They do have the album for sale, so you really should but it. Especially after how fucked they got.
