In bad economic times, unions lock in wages, benefits & safe work rules so employers can't erode them. Unions also represent individual workers when an employers want to fire them due to favoritism (such as when a boss wants to hire his cousin), or when a boss accuses a worker of not doing his or her job. Everybody hates auto & fire insurance premiums until we have an accident. Pressured by corporate, bosses can be bad. It's good to have someone who knows the contract & will fight for you.
