Citizens should not be blamed for their actions in wars started by their leaders. The Americans in the helicopters were no more evil than the Vietnamese shooting at them.
I don't know about evil, that's a pretty misused term. But the American soldiers DID invade another country while the Vietnamese were simply defending their home. It's not much different from defending your home against burglars.

the unfortunate thing about war is that it's never that precise. Hence "friendly fire" Those school children and farmers are harboring guerillas. They knew exactly the danger they were placing those school children in, when they allowed their soldiers to come into the town. I don't have any sympathy for them. If we were invaded by another country, they would never take the time to discern military targets from civillian. We would be smart enough to segregate the two. That's all...

Modern war is Total War. In total war, there are no civilians, only citizens. Your enemy is the citizen who resists the will of your leaders. Therefore, the real question you should be asking is whether or not the will of your leaders is worth the death of those citizens who are doing what their leaders demand. Citizens should not be blamed for their actions in wars started by their leaders. The Americans in the helicopters were no more evil than the Vietnamese shooting at them.

I don't know about evil, that's a pretty misused term. But the American soldiers DID invade another country while the Vietnamese were simply defending their home. It's not much different from defending your home against burglars.
They should have shot their communist leaders on the spot but in the end it's up to them, not a foreign power.

Sadly Gulgul2006, you are exactly the kind of person who allows war to continue to tolerate civilian deaths because you blame the civilians for their fate, not the governments that put Vietnamese soldiers in that village and American soldiers in helicopters. Citizens do not have a choice in war because if they disobey the will of their leaders, they become enemies. I am sure school children have the power to challenge the orders of Hanoi. It is definitely their fault that Americans shot them.

No what's sad is that you actually think that your contrary statements hold any weight. Which is it? I as an individual cannot do anything about it or I as an individual am solely responsible for the perpetuation of war? I am just willing to be honest with myself and others. I sure as shit would rather have my kid home and safe and miss school then to get a 50 caliber education. I don't see any evidence in the history of that conflict where they were forced there.

You, as an individual, are nothing. However, you are not alone in your "honest" view. That alone confers the leaders the power to do as they please. No leader can do as he pleases unless he has a source of power which allows him to enact policy. You alone have no power, but if enough people think like you, then the leaders have all the power they need to waste your money and lives. What prevents your children being consribed and sent to Afghanistan? Only a strong enough lack of popular support.

War is always a co-op venture my friend. Those "innocent" people would use their kids as bombs because nobody would suspect a VC kid as a killer. Even in this scene they have a 20mm and a 50 cal plus plenty of AKs. Nothing innocent about that. It's just your line of thinking "they are innocent" that got a lot of our people needlessly killed. And it's Ride of the Valkyries or Die Walkure if you want to get technical. Your engrish is horrid btw.

you know that i dont mean that ALL of these people are ionnocent, but you also see a school of children (they are not long on screen tho) and you also see some farmers working,....and yes you see people with ak`s and heavy guns, but dont kill i ALL by blowing everything up with nepalm(who invented that anyway?). just do it a bit more suptile, that will be way effiecenter and costs less money and innocent lives. but thats my opinion and that is yours:)(ps:at least i try to speak proper englisch)

We got pay back on the Russian's when they attacked Afghanistan, we supplied Afghanistan. When we wanted are weapons back, they refused, same with Iraq, hence why we are really there.
Reagan and George Bush Senior gave Iraq, missles, chemicals etc. For we had a common enemy, Iran.

The VietNamese hardly held their own against the U.S. or the French. The U.S. killed them 22 to 1 and the French 4 to 1. Both armed forces only lost one battle in 20 years of fighting. They had numbers on their side and a strong will to fight, little else. Neither the U.S. nor the French lost the war. They merely chose not to destroy 80-90% of the population.

we lived close to an airforce base growing up, during Vietnam, man, we saw tons of Hueys, Shinooks, C130's,F4's, the sky was full of them back in them days, That Hercules was a beautiful airplane, that Huey was beautiful too, good-looking helicopter, they used to fly in low formation over the neighborhood, we'd try to follow them on our bikes

I'm 29 so obviously I never fought in this war, but a good friend of mine did (he's 55) - he volunteered for 1 year, then volunteered for another, saw a bunch of his friends get butchered, and he butchered a few hundred on 'the other side.' In his opinion today, it was, at best, a waste of time.

Either way, I never said I was for or against that war. I was asking "what did anyone win in this war" and mentioned the opinion of someone who actually fought in it.
