on august 14 Sunday i took my twins whom are 5 months to my church to get dedicated & my 1st lady sung "Brown Baby" .. the song was so powerful i cried.. im 19 years of age im a young mother so for me to know this song its a powerful message for us blacks.
She is a true artist. She visualizes what she wants to transmit and executes it, engaged, with her own style and authenticity! And many more things...
I'm sick and tired of 'artists' who perform just for being watched or flattered.
@yalodejo I agree! Nina is tops! There isn't 1 artist today who has anything to sing about! I'm sick of all these false gods, these plastic celebrities with their twittering nonsense. ..give me Nina any day.
Nina was so... "Black." The closest you'll get to feel what it was to be Afrikan in Amerikkka back then and it's ancestral roots to the horrific legacy of slavery and what it has produce. Nina, makes you want to grab your momma, hold her tight and pray she never let you go. I don't care what people say about living in the past, the past should live in us everyday.
When you listen to this you realize how dishonest modern music is now. Note how Nina is singing hopeful lyrics from the perspective of her own mother, but she's doing it in a very sad tone. This means that Nina's mother knew what she was saying wasn't true but wanted to fill her daughter with hope; and now that Nina is older she knows it wasn't true. That, kids, is THE definition of a musical genius. No one singing today can touch this level of raw honesty. Nina was a goddess.
@SuperMachiavellian I don't know if I agree. Have you read her autobiography? I think you're right about her talking from her mother's perspective, but she's sad because her mother thought Nina had gone down the wrong path because she started singing in night clubs. Her mother didn't think that what she told Eunice were lies, she was a very religious woman who truly believed in what she told her babies.
@SuperMachiavellian Listen to Chavela Vargas sing. Find her on you tube. I think she comes close. She is from Mexico and once was Frida Kahlo's lover. Enjoy. :)
@SuperMachiavellian Thank you for your comment. It was the most thought provoked comment I've read on youtube. You're sooo right!! No one today has this quality in their voice. This is musical genius.
this is so beautiful in the way it wrenches at your soul, just when I think I can't love Nina Simone any more, I hear her rendition of Brown Baby, and it makes the world's loss of her that much more painful
Thank you. I watched this performance of the song in that same music channel recently and I thought it deserved to be watched by many more people. Thank you.

Nina Simone is my Queen and this rendition is awesome. FYI...check out Mahalia Jackson's version. It is equally powerful.
