Ironically, the game that comes closest to being a GM in that sense is Dwarf Fortress. Ironically, it eschews graphics and uses extended ASCII. Ironically, it's what first started the argument.

While they don't necessarily involve the same level of imagination as, say, DND does, that's the trade you make for playing a game on a disk that doesn't involve a board.
