This was a great video, and there's a lot of truth to it. I can't tell you how many of my own problems I worked through just by writing them down. I'm able to see where I'm thinking in circles, where I'm being unfair, and sometimes the idea for how to fix the problem just jumps out at me. It's also useful to look back if I'm a little hazy on the details of what was going on that month.
I've often thought about this, and every time decided what's the point. I still don't understand the point after watching your video. Not that it was or is a bad video.
I've been doing my morning pages everyday too. It makes for better, newer & more interesting topics when you go out about your day. It makes you feel as if your starting on a fresh slate. Let's not forget about the "artist dates" either. ;)
I have a mini moleskin but the full size makes me think of pretentious hipsters.*Shakes fist*
Some of my best writing was my blog on my recent 3 month bike trip. I only updated 2-3 times a week though. I should have journaled daily but I felt entries would have been somewhat bland if I had done that. Blogging every few days seemed to let the words swell in my being and explode with creativity all over the page. Like a literary pornstar.
Can someone please explain how journaling can help someone with adhd. I've had it for years and I started journaling and it's helped a lot to keep my mind clear. I am just wondering, will the neurocognitive benefits from journaling help me concentrate in other areas such as studying or being able to read for hours nonstop and so on.
@lamarjlp914 I don't know how it can help someone with adhd, but I think you enjoy it so much, like I do, is because it feel so creative writing things down. I usually write down my thoughts in journals, and I get more inspiration from things, from writing them.
I've been thinking of doing something like this for some time now, this video has given me a push to maybe actually start writing it.
Mine will be a text document though, i write close to 10x faster on the computer than longhand (typically 500-700 keystrokes pr minute), and it's both more secure and portable (except for travels without computers).
I tried to keep a handwritten journal, but I realised it would take up a ridiculous amount of room.
Mine's now on my computer =3 and I pretty much only keep one because I have the memory of a goldfish otherwise. And also, yeah it really does help sorting stuff out by writing it down.
@emoly1994 I'd rather keep a handwritten journal, the old-fashioned way. But I guess it's because I can write really small. So I guess if you cannot write small, then it's best to keep it on the computer. Good idea.
My grandpa kept a journal for over 60 years. I had the opportunity to read a few of them back in 1988 and was awestruck by some of his "stories". Many of them dating back to WWII. So in 1989 I began keeping a diary (I was 15 at the time) and have been doing it every year since. It's a great idea.
@totalrod2 dude do you know how freaking lucky you are?! OMG how I would so love to read something that went back to such an amazing, scary, unforgettable event. World War 2....Wow, I hope you can keep them and pass them down to your kids when they're old enough to take care of something so sentimental, priceless. I'm guessing your grandfather made a vivid picture huh?
@CrazyJonasStories568 I only wish I knew where they all went! My guess is that an uncle (whom I haven't seen since 1999) got most of that stuff after my grandfather died. I think he was pretty pissed at my grandmother for keeping my granddad alive when he had cancer, instead of letting him die in peace. So he hasn't spoken to the family since. :(
@totalrod2 Wow I'm so sorry to hear that. :( Sorry about your grandfather's death. Maybe you'll be able to get them back in the near future. Do you have any contact with your grandfather? If you do maybe you should talk to him. Again so sorry,
Ella your videos are awesome! I really like them, they're sort of inspirational and philosophical in a way. After I watch your videos I have this topic in mind for the whole day and keep asking myself questions. It's quite fun! Thank you :)
Great video!! I agree with you about writing things down and then seeing them happen! I've had the same experience. It's pretty cool & pretty amazing! :-)
I was also drooling over all the books in the background! Is that your personal library? I'd love to see a video tour of your book collection!
R E: Writing something, having it come true. Yeah. I wrote a novel, put it in a drawer, forgot about it. Six years on, it came true, plot-point by plot-point, theme by theme - amazing, considering the novel was very high-concept, not at all able to come true just by coincidence. Shirley McClaine, Alan Moore, etc. Only 1 problem now - I never allow myself to write frivolous crap, it's got to be Graham Greene or zen-like introspection. Still, a small price to pay for GODLIKE POWER.
Didn't they make a movie from that idea? I've been keeping journals since I took creative writing in college. I like to experiment in my journals in a never ending story :)
you rock, chica. keeping a journal is definitely benefitial (sp?), as well as very fun :) its worth it to look back at your journal in the future and remember all the times you had, good and bad.
writing it down to make it happen also works by telling someone i said i can control temperature in my body just by thinking about it and now i can by controlinf the flow and direction and concentration of blood i tried to write a book aswell well three attempts all failed i got bored and burnt them
