  • Tears to my eyes. Oh Leo.

jplir, thanks so much for posting this.

  • lol, thanks to YouTube I now finally see, after 32 yrs of punishing my fingers on a steel string flattop trying to last out this tune, that this beautiful version is via a nylon string guitar ;) Doh!

  • @011heinz Could you not hear it?

  • this is fantastic, don't want to work very hard working up a nice comment because it detracts my attention away from the video...

  • He makes it look so easy and relaxed.............excellent!!!!! I still have it on a record I bought when it first came out in the 70s.Thanks for posting this.

  • one night I got home pleasantly elevated, turned on the tv it showed me some strange movie about a giant and maybe there was a dwarf and a pretty blonde girl I think and I don't remember any dialogue just some nutty acoustic guitar playing. I wish I could remember the name of the movie but from it's credits I first heard the name Leo Kottke.

  • @bongfodder that movie sounds like something i may enjoy when pleasantly elevated haha, if you ever find the name could you pass it along?

  • Hi..He doesn't compose them like that anymore...I read somewhere many years ago he gets more inquiries re The Fisherman than any other of his tunes...I really think in the future his composing skills will be really recognised ..IMO Oddball will survive to be a classic.and no doubt there will be many others.HK

  • It's been decades since I first heard this song from Mr. Kottke, and while I've gotten older, it hasn't.

  • Sweet, nice to hear it played on a nylon strung guitar, much more mellow.

  • No singing needed!

  • gives me chills every time, this song

  • A lovely rarity! I was at one of his shows recently where someone yelled out for him to play this, but he said he can't stand playing it anymore because of the "bridge thing" and he can't find a way around it. What a shame. Enjoy it here.

  • @AnAbleApe What "bridge thing"?

  • @sevlow47 I expect he means the musical "bridge" that joins the refrain to the other bits of the tune, Can't see anything wrong with it myself. Sounds good to me!

  • Cannot believe this is only 2:47 long. :o

  • beautiful

  • Leo Rocks Period!!!!

  • I dare you to try and listen to this song without feeling nostalgic. Great tune. One of his best.

  • Leo's Best Song!

  • this reminds me of my dad

  • @lmlm11 nice. I love leo, but look up "for my father", (andy mckee) it's pretty good stuff

  • beautiful, is there any other word for this?

  • Pulchritudinous :)

  • This is incredible.

  • my favorite kottke tune....still haven't got this one down...i should practice more...

  • A Nylon string. That's different.

  • It was this tune that first got me into Leo Kottke and into 12 string guitar.

(although he doesn't play it on 12 string here)

  • Probably my favourite or at least up there Leo Kittke tunes. Beautiful, great to have the video.

  • The Master.

  • @modelleg : I concur!

  • Hilarious. He's so young here I thought it was some young turk covering his tune, and I was thinking "Jeez, this guy sure has a wonderful feel for this song - best I've heard apart from Leo!"

  • ,,oh I never seen Leo on nylon string before...Great and rare ....Wonderfull !

    claudio

  • Leo on a gut-string guitar. Nice!

  • Awesome... 5***** :)) x

  • Leoooooo!

  • @jsipflatpickd28

I would love to be able to just drop everything and visit wintertime Joliet, but I have to be in Ireland on the 29th.

Thanks for the info, anyway .... and have yourself a happy new year. All the best from London, England ! P.

  • Apologies (particularly to any Swiss friends) ..... I meant, of course, Montreux.

Warmest regards to all Leo fans, wherever you make your homes.

  • ..... and, I like to think, grown younger listening to his music since I was 20. It remains one of the deep regrets of my life that I did not take the plunge a few years ago and fly over to New York to see Leo at a rare appearance at the famous 'blue note' club. My kid brother, also a life-long fan (under my influence) was all for it, but I stupidly 'bottled out' at the last minute. I live in hopes of Leo making another trip to Europe !

P.S. I also just missed him in Ann Arbor in 1992.

  • @saxonfield3

He'll be in joliet, IL on January 29th, 2010

  • jpiir ! I'm stunned ! I was at this concert ! - with two friends from neighbouring Lausanne. Please post asap any more clips which you might have of it ! It was part of the 11th Montreaux International Jazz Festival, and Leo was followed on the same evening by the late Rory Gallagher and friends. Not entirely complimentary 'acts', perhaps, but it made for a very enjoyable evening. It was, regretably, the only time I ever saw Leo play live. I'm a 58 year-old Londoner. I've grown up with the man.

  • This is a wonderful clip.

  • Hey 1crow......message follows below :)

  • I flew to SF @ end of July and saw him, then this last Saturday in Arroyo Grande, and he did not play this song at either gig... I wonder why he stopped playing it. In SF he said he gets tired of a song, and I COMPLETELY get that..I'm so sick of Blackbird I can't stand it. I've seen so many BAD renditions of this here, and if I can't pull off playing this as well as the master...I simply won't play it..

  • I have been listening to Leo Kottke for about 40 years, and he still amazes me.........

  • This is one of my favorite Kottke tunes! Pretty, sweet and melodic. Leo is AWESOME!

  • wow the sound quality on this is awesome

  • So effortless. He always makes me want to continue my learning. Amazing.

  • wow! super nice.

and yeah, dang, that is a nylon.

A 1st, other than that clip in H&A vid when he does a moment of William Powwel.

At first i thought this was from the 77 Rock PAlaste concert, but it is not. Was this entire show filmed?

    Leo at his best

    thanks.Rob

  • Started playing guitar because of this song. What a gift to see it here! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Isn't this the one on the Chrysalis compilation album?!?!? Sweet!!!!

...Do you also have "Up Tempo?"

  • fantastic! Thanks!
