lol, thanks to YouTube I now finally see, after 32 yrs of punishing my fingers on a steel string flattop trying to last out this tune, that this beautiful version is via a nylon string guitar ;) Doh!
He makes it look so easy and relaxed.............excellent!!!!! I still have it on a record I bought when it first came out in the 70s.Thanks for posting this.
one night I got home pleasantly elevated, turned on the tv it showed me some strange movie about a giant and maybe there was a dwarf and a pretty blonde girl I think and I don't remember any dialogue just some nutty acoustic guitar playing. I wish I could remember the name of the movie but from it's credits I first heard the name Leo Kottke.
Hi..He doesn't compose them like that anymore...I read somewhere many years ago he gets more inquiries re The Fisherman than any other of his tunes...I really think in the future his composing skills will be really recognised ..IMO Oddball will survive to be a classic.and no doubt there will be many others.HK
A lovely rarity! I was at one of his shows recently where someone yelled out for him to play this, but he said he can't stand playing it anymore because of the "bridge thing" and he can't find a way around it. What a shame. Enjoy it here.
@sevlow47 I expect he means the musical "bridge" that joins the refrain to the other bits of the tune, Can't see anything wrong with it myself. Sounds good to me!
Hilarious. He's so young here I thought it was some young turk covering his tune, and I was thinking "Jeez, this guy sure has a wonderful feel for this song - best I've heard apart from Leo!"
..... and, I like to think, grown younger listening to his music since I was 20. It remains one of the deep regrets of my life that I did not take the plunge a few years ago and fly over to New York to see Leo at a rare appearance at the famous 'blue note' club. My kid brother, also a life-long fan (under my influence) was all for it, but I stupidly 'bottled out' at the last minute. I live in hopes of Leo making another trip to Europe !
jpiir ! I'm stunned ! I was at this concert ! - with two friends from neighbouring Lausanne. Please post asap any more clips which you might have of it ! It was part of the 11th Montreaux International Jazz Festival, and Leo was followed on the same evening by the late Rory Gallagher and friends. Not entirely complimentary 'acts', perhaps, but it made for a very enjoyable evening. It was, regretably, the only time I ever saw Leo play live. I'm a 58 year-old Londoner. I've grown up with the man.
I flew to SF @ end of July and saw him, then this last Saturday in Arroyo Grande, and he did not play this song at either gig... I wonder why he stopped playing it. In SF he said he gets tired of a song, and I COMPLETELY get that..I'm so sick of Blackbird I can't stand it. I've seen so many BAD renditions of this here, and if I can't pull off playing this as well as the master...I simply won't play it..

He is the reincarnation of Robert Johnson; each time he re-sells his soul to 'Scratch' and again becomes an astonishingly good musician. Except his life always ends in misery and self-destruction. Witness the time he has already served for drugs and homicide, his dalliance with Charles Manson and close friendship with O.J and Michael Jackson. Now he's a 'person of interest' in Jackson's demise
is he using a classical guitar? wow, first time iver seen him using anything other than 12 string or steel string. wicked awesome man thanks a bunch for uploading
Tears to my eyes. Oh Leo.

It's been decades since I first heard this song from Mr. Kottke, and while I've gotten older, it hasn't.
