There is nothing at channel wbloos. How can we compare.
Granted, there are other stereo videos on YT, anaglyph in particular, that are excellent. But I think nytram makes a good point: stereography cannot save a poor video.
Any tips on how to set alignment correctly would be much appreciated ... please remember, I'm using two different, cheap, digital cameras with very poor zoom controls.
As for the stereo window ... try watching the higher quality version ... link in the info panel ... the Flash player used by YT does not always get it right.
You also complain about sync ... any hints on how to get closer than 1/30th second much appreciated!!!!!!!
I'll have a look at your 3D videos to get some ideas :)
I replied to anoter video already - could you send me the original left/right footage of this video to have a look at it and show you how the result could look like? put the clips on a server to download them and send me the link or let me know if you have no webspace to place them I can give you a ftp account to be able to upload them.
You suggest StereoMovieMaker. I cannot see how this can improve on the < 1/30th second sync. As for alignment ... again, the problem is being able to set both camera lenses at the same height, same focal length, and at a suitable angle to each other. Without stripping the cameras and rigging both to run off one set of controls this is the best I can do.
well if you want to do stereoscopic video you will need to switch to PC - there is no software available for MACs not for alignment and not for plaback - on PC you will find 'StereoscopicPlayer' which will playback any 3D video to any available 3D output - all this does not exist for the MAC
Alignment can be done in post using SMM and you NEED to do it regardless how good your camera alignment was - e.g a vertical misalignment should be less than 0.2% otherwise we will get headadges!
I'll not be switching to a PC :) You're wrong about the lack of software on the Mac ... I can easily use QT Pro or FCE to make 3D videos, to adjust vertical allignment and to playback parallel or cross-view 3D videos.
0.2% vertical misalignment equates to 1 pixel at VGA, roughly speaking. There's no point in trying to work to this degree of accuracy in post production when i cannot set both cameras to the same focal length with anything like this degree of accuracy.
can you also adjust rotation, vertical and horizontal perspective rotation (keystone distortion whic is introduced when setting up the cameras with toe in)? with SMM this can be done even without manual interacting - all done automatic.
if you ever want to project these videos to a 2m wide screen the 0,2% vertical misalignment is a MUST
With FCE yes ... all these things can be adjusted. However, there's no point worrying about all that when it's impossible with my cheap kit to set the same focal lengths on the cameras in the first place.
You're also wrong about projecting to a 2m screen, as the viewing distance would be increased proportionately. Yes, the 0.2% error might be visible close up, but not at a comfortable cross-view distance.
My 3d single camera roundabout clip also casts doubts on your alignment theory.
so if you do not want to correct vertical misalignment I can't help any more - make your 3D videos as you like - but this way you destroy the 3D and users will reject it - thats bad for the whole 3D scenery!
Well, readers of our discussion can decide for themselves. But I see from your website that you use two Sony camcorders, with special linking cable etc etc ... this can also put people off taking an interest in home 3D because of the expense etc. I also notice non of your clips are edited, or made into interesting films ... this is more important to me than perfect technique. I ask you again, if you want to promote home made 3D video, upload your own work to YouTube for us all to see!
Hi again. I've now had time to download and view some of your 3D clips. If I may say, I think you're letting the 3D concerns get in the way of making an interesting film. The 3D illusion must be secondary to the story telling of the film itself. Also, if the scene itself does not lend itself to 3D treatment, he effect is underwhelming .. the football clips are a good example .. because there is nothing in the foreground, the 3D effect is poor. Upload your clips for all to see and critique :)
Rather than waste time sending you my footage, just upload some of your own 3D work for us all to see. Some notes on the kit and software you use would be helpful too!
Sorry about the 'stretching' ... it doesn't happen every time ... after the video has played in full it seems to play correctly if you click Play Again. I can't explain it :(
Glad you like the idea though ... there are other 3D experiments that I've uploaded for comment. Regards Nytram1309
As for making your eyes ache, when you get good at it, it's no longer a problem. In fact, your eyes are only adjusted so that they're focussed on something held about 9" from your nose ... something like when reading a book.
The High Quality version seems to work fine ... and is better to watch anyway ... follow the link in the More Info pane to the right of the player window.
Hi all ... for some reason or another this video is currently being stretched, 'filling' the player window and it shouldn't .... there should be black bars above and below the side by side video. Do you suffer this problem when viewing?
