The key to playing this riff is to use the picking Knopfler uses, mainly middle finger doing a down stroke on the 1 and 3, thumb on the 2 and 4s, and index-middle up on the &s. If you don't do that and just pluck the strings you will not have that percussive rhythmic sound that makes it so unique.
Full marks for that demo, Old Knoffler certainly has a gift and a style all on his own, and you emulate that in your playing, well done, ( such a brilliant, catchy riff, anyway!)
Feels a tad faster than the Knofler versions I've heard - but I love that you get the slide-ups in the riff. Lots of others totally miss that special little signature.
Ok it's very nice, and very good study. And you can play very good and a nice tone. But this is just a little bit to obsessed lol. Is it your fav song?
Didnt he also play one of those ugly mofos with no head at one of the 80ties concerts back when he was still doing his tennis coach style? I seem to remember wondering about it.
Hi, no I don't read music, electric guitar has got nothing to do with reading music though, thats for classical guitar, other classical instruments, keyboards, and bass.
@StefanPriceUK - I understand what you're getting at, since electric guitar playing, particularly rock and blues, is very much about improvisation. But to say that the electric guitar has nothing to do with reading music is just wrong, mate. Reading music is just another way of learning and communicating musical ideas, regardless of the instrument.
Sometime, I don't like On every street, I actually wrote the same hook before it came out, I didn't like it and then they released On every street with the same hook that I had written.
Excellent playing. How does one get hold of these differing variations? On my version I used a book which claims to be the correct version (obviously when played better than I do). See what you think.
Do you have any tips on fingerstyle playing. I've tried it but can't seem to get to grips with it. The problem I have is striking the string without any stopping of the note.
That's pretty impressive stuff!! Also to get the sound this way through a Rolande cube 30... one of the most reliable small amps ever made I reckon. Mark K should bring one of those on the tour as a backup amp then, if the valves should all blow up :-)

This is very impressive! How long did it take you to develop and nail the picking and rhythm. I struggle with Marks claw technique

interesting study; you really breathe dire straits don't you.
A man comes home from the shop...
- honeyyyy I went to the shop
- Ah what did you bring?
- a can of Dire Straits and a pack of Knopfler sauce!
- Again? we still have 5 of that in the cupboard
- Woman....you NEVER have enough of THAT in the house!
