We need a new pistol that does carry magnum's rounds that I say. The pistol have to be give same feel of M9, .45 gun uses. It might be hard to say, but its not hard change a regular pistol to be like magnum's rounds. My dad say so, because he works on guns at the time he was teen and growing up as one. I am not sure the story is true, but I have to buy it. I guess how much rounds should the bullet gets is pretty much should hold 9-12. I am not gun maker, but I sure believed they can make.
I'm curious, why would you want to do this? Couldn't you just buy slugs? What is the advantage of wax slugs? It seems to me that if the pellets would be all over the meat. Just a newbie question i guess.
@tireironman regular 12 gauge foster slugs cost around a dollar a piece. Doing this you can get over three times the amount of accurate long range shooting (smooth bore keep in mind) for the same price

You are making a potential pibe-bomb out of your shotgun. The parafin might make the slug stuck in the shell, and there you have a pibe-bomb 20 centimeters from your face. And i think you are a fucking moron, at least you could say loud and clear "THIS IS YOUR OWN RESPONSIBILITY" There might be stupid kids who do this, and worst case ... You can die. Interesting video, nice explanation. However, what is the benefits over factory slug loads vs the work it takes to convert bird shot to a big game load?
@aznboi344 well i was shooting the wrong kind of wax but for those of you wondering use gulf wax brand its somewhat rubbery, but no it was a slug barrel.
are these safe to shoot with an open choke. I have a maverick 88 with the field barrel. It has the large choke on it.( the diameter is the same as the barrel) I don't really want to shoot an actual slug out of this barrel, but this seems to be a better idea considering the wax is softer.
@Em0Dudee21 Price # 8 or # 7.5 shot then price slugs. This is a much cheaper way of getting a large animal shell out of bird shot. It is also a bit of history.. this is the way it was done years before slugs were made. That isn't from me but another one of their videos unless I's mixed up. BTW thanks for the videos.. I really appreciate the info.
@weedsmokerweed Hunting laws regulate if your shooting over water lead shot CANNOT be used. Thats why they make steel shot now.
The shot cup is between the shot material and barrel so anything will work without damaging the barrel. But the effectiveness of bbs will depend on the projectile weight.
@flipflopking56 which is why you stockpile as much as you think is reasonable. How much is reasonable? As much as you can carry. You have to expect that any serious crisis would force you out of your house and leave you without a vehicle.
Hey guys, got a question. Is it possible to make disks with the wax/shot combo? I forget what the proper name was but I saw a home defense load made by a stack of metal disks. I want to say it was federal ammunition but I'm not sure.
when did the wad become the power piston? After 40 years of shooting and reloading shotguns I have never heard the wad being referred to as a power piston.
kinda curious if these would actualy break up once they enter the target could make for a pretty hard hit and some severe internal damage and possibly a very nasty exit wound depending on the range
@sok8888 The wax will cool the moment it touches the lead shot, and will only cap off the top. This allows you to make a solid slug right down to the plug and not have any loose shot.
If anything the wax actually cleans the barrel on the way out. I could see this as a STHF situation where you have everything but the correct shot for your reloading.
@Cafferssss We call it wadding here in the U.S. also i never heard it called power piston either and i do my own loads, maybe that is what they call them up north, i am down south.
i tried makign these with candle wax, but they didnt work they just spread like "normal" shot just with a bad bad pattern. didnt at all work like a slug :( what could be the culprit? 2 little wax?
Ive tryed to make to make a .410 wax slugs useing 2.5 lyalvale expresses but when I fire the things it still brakes up into birdshot. can anyone give me some tips or help on where im going wrong
Have you though of using solid wall steel shot wads for wax slugs ? I'd think they would stay with the shot longer and not open up and fall . I have dose some lead shot loads in steel shot wads that shot to 50 yards like a slug with no wax .
@darbmonkey in an autoloading maybe but i cant see it happening in a pump or single/double barrel. the shell is in the barrel with no place to go but out.
Just a few point's I think you could improve on in the manufacture of these shells. I use a 1x42 belt sander with a 40 grit belt to grind the edge of the crimp off, result is I can do a box of 25 in under 5 min. Another one is use a plastic funnel, eliminates any spillage. Took me about 3/4 hour from start to end to do a batch of 50 shells the other day.
i have a remington 870 express magnum. i have a smooth barrel with 3 choke tubes a improved cylinder a modified and a full choke but i want to use them in my rifled barrel. will this make them more accurate?
interesting concept, but i wouldn't go huntung any big game with these. Little birdshot like that would spread inside the animal. More chance of residual shot in the meat than just an ordanary .30 round that doesn`t fragment. just my personal opinion.
@operatingman To save money, ya think? People now-a-days have more time than money. It's the difference of 25 slugs for $6 (home made) or 5 slugs for $6 (factory). Hmmm... What to do, what to do?!?
@ElTerrible666 not if you hand loading from primary materials, empty shell, primer, powder, over powder cup, shot cup, and shot. In which case its way cheaper to buy shot than pre-made slugs, now if you cast than that's a different story.
I think this bad practice shouldn't be shown on the internet. It's clearly unsafe and very much dependent on the individual ability! Anyway I would never risk my like for few bucks.
If you cannot buy a decent cartridge then don't shoot, it's not for you.....
@Magico070 "If you cannot buy a decent cartridge then don't shoot, it's not for you....."
no offence intended but i think you may want to reread american history. maybe start with the revolutionary war and then focus on trapers and frontiersmen.
@Magico070 how do you figure its "clearly unsafe"... and the internet is neutral and "unregulated" how it should be... hes free to put whatever information he wants on the internet. People load their own cartridges all the time.. its cheaper you get a more accurate load and you know exactly what you're shooting.
@Magico070 How is it unsafe?? I guess if you do not know ANYTHING it might be i guess, you are not removing or changing the powder load so the grain wieght you do not have to worry about so no chance of blowing up the barrell even if you shot it empty with no shot. The only problem would be if you put in a heavier load and changed the back pressure the other way, think about it, SO, there is no danger at all with the round blowing its wad,,,,LOL
@5291joebob You are surely unbalancing the load because the final shot weight is really approximate respect to the original. Indeed the precision, in comparison to a decent slug, is poor! Pressure curves just don't work as simple as you think. Finally people with little or no experience can make several other mistakes. That's my opinion based on facts where people were a little too optimistic about their skills....
@McEgglayingostrich Every deer I have shot and ate has been with lead. 2 of them were with 1oz lead slugs from a shotgun. My best friend killed and ate a deer with a .50 caliber lead ball from a flintlock. There is nothing wrong with eating a deer shot with a lead projectile
@McEgglayingostrich ?? yea iam with mark iam not quite following you on this, i get they have non toxic shot for waterfowl, so not to contaminate the water, and if you live in commifornia you can only shoot copper or alloy bullets, but since hte beginning of firearms lead is the metal of your bullets........ weather it be copper jacketed or not lol and everyone in my familly generation after generation all turned out fine from eating wild game taken with a lead projectile
@1gamoguy NO, the reason the law changed to steel shot is eating of the animals shot, they do not want humans eating animals with lead in them, that is the reason for the law, the land thing came in later. In Florida where I live you can not shoot SHOT GUNS at all in fruit groves and you can understand why on that one, it is a HUGE fine for that. But the law was made and passed so humans would not eat lead or steel since the shot is so small.
@5291joebob You're an expert in your own mind. In the USA, the steel shot rules have been in effect since 1991. If you knew anything about waterfowl you'd know they ingest spent lead pellets while feeding on the bottom of lakes & marshes which finds its way into their gizzards, erode, & dissolve entering the blood stream damaging the liver & kidneys. They surcome to lead poisoning & a rather gay death. Humans are not as susceptible. You've been schooled. "Have nice day!"
@5291joebob no steel or lead? lol waterfowl loads are steel, unless you buy hevy-shot that is tungsten..... i talked to an ENCON officer about this before it was during our big game season, and we were in the northern zone and he explained to me that since the shot falls into the water, if your duck hunting for example thats why they make it mandatory for non toxic shot, so the lead does not contaminate the water, but hey looks like each state will have different reasons
@5291joebob and to touch on lead shot....... you can choose bullets either all copper, but a majority are lead. you think your not injesting some lead when you eat your venison? i dont know about florida but thats not illegal for big game, hence again why iam believing what i was told by ENCON of why non toxic shot is mandatory for waterfowl
@McEgglayingostrich Pure lead (inorganic) is pretty much bio-unavailable, meaning it doesn't dissolve and enter your bloodstream to a significant degree. the organic forms of lead that were used in gasoline are much more dangerous (tetra-ethyl lead). Pure lead bullets are safe (unless you get shot by them) :)
Why would you make people think that eating lead is safe? If it wasn't harmful them why would people, waterfowl, condors etc. suffer, and sometimes even die, from lead poisoning after eating lead shots, bullet cores or carcasses containing lead? No one uses pure lead to make pellets, shots or bullet cores. It's to hard and brittle.
@MrSzymonSz You need to read more. Lead is not brittle in the slightest, it is one of the most soft and malleable metals in existince. In Chemistry, there is a fundamental rule. "Like dissolves like" in other words, non-polar fats, oils, and other similar long chain hydrocarbons all mix well together. Polar inorganic molecules like water and metals and their compunds do not dissolve in organic solutions (People are organic)
Show me a duck that died of lead toxicity. You can't
@fastacker2 Sorry about the typos. What passes for public knowledge these days is the product of advertisements by special interest groups and not honest science. I have a Chem E degree, graduated at the top of the class in the 70s back before school curricula were watered down so as not to hurt anyone's feelings. Organic lead is dangerous, pure lead not so much. Certainly not from incidental exposure. I would not advice chronic exposure like having lead dental fillings.
@fastacker2 But if a duck ate a few lead pellets, there is no way that would cause it to become ill. But if you soaked the duck in gasoline with a lot of tetraethyl lead in it, the lead would pass transdermally and enter the ducks bloodstream and lymph system and if exposed long enough would harm the duck.
@fastacker2 And I don't know where you got the idea that lead killed the condors. The theory that I heard was that ddt was softening the eggs of many birds causing breakage before the chicks could develop and that is why it ddt was made illegal. (Although ddt is now used again to control mosquito borne diseases like malaria, since people are more important than birds. (we are higher on the pecking order) Pun intended.
Again - yes but... that was before the condors had all been trapped and bred in captivity. After their release the population started to dwindle again. The problem was - condors eat carrion which was often lost game with lead bullets inside. They even banned lead bullets in the area which has apparently helped. Man, I'm surprised you haven't heard of that.
@MrSzymonSz Perhaps unrelated, but I have noticed lately huge numbers of turkey vultures perching on cell phone tower radiating elements. Pretty sure they are getting slowly microwaved to death.
Off course it will become ill if it does that. And if it continues to do so it will eventually die. This has been known for ages. Why do you think they banned lead shots and lead anglers' weights in many places?
@MrSzymonSz I of course know that lead shot has been banned for hunting waterfowl. But I have not seen any scientific proof presented to support the lead poisoning theory. I guess if something is simply advertised as truth, that makes it so. Lead killed the Roman Empire, the Earth is flat, the Sun and all of the stars revolve around the Earth. All widely believed "facts" at one time or another.
I assure you there's plenty of evidence to support the ban. Google it if you don't trust me. And I'm not talking about some charity screaming insults towards hunters. I'm talking about serious scientific, peer-reviewed publications.
Yes, it's soft but not soft enough to make a good bullet. Seriously, look it up. No one uses pure lead to do such things. Yes, inorganic lead compounds are poorly absorbed through skin but your digestive track is a different story. Off course I can't show you a duck. But only because you're a few thousand miles away. There've been many studies and publications on lead toxicity. Some specifically point out that hunters have often elevated lead levels in their blood.
@MrSzymonSz Actually the reverse is true. Some like the shot to be harder, and buy pellets with Antimony as an alloying element. Pure lead is just about the softest metal that exists. An antimony alloy is still non-organic.
That' true. My bad. Either way it's to soft for shots and still no good on its own to make a good expanding bullet. This way or another there's no pure lead in ammunition and lead is still Pb and toxic.
No, you don't have to take my word for that. Just google it and see for yourself.
Good video showing how to make these wax shot slugs. However the video failed to mention (and it's a substantial oversight especially to someone not so experienced like myself) is; What is the advantage of these wax shot slugs over a factory slug?
great idea... very interesting, but before anyone would use these to hunt with, and take a deer i would check with your local game regulations. only from my standpoint these shells would be illegal for me to use for big game hunting
@MarkRambo1 yea same here in NY.... but my question is, obviously there are different sizes of buckshot.... now since he is making these with no.8 shot, and the shot does not seperate from the shell.... it does not scatter like buckshot.... i dunno lol sticky situation here, iam sure they would find someway to fuck you if you did hunt with these, personally i would not but its still pretty cool to see it done, think i will call the DEC to find out more info
@1gamoguy Yeah I agree,.I think they would see it as a sticky situation and might try to screw somebody over. I think I will call the Game Commission here and ask. I mean true you are making it from shot, but in the end it is a single projectile ammunition which I think should be considered a slug
@MarkRambo1 what i would really like to see though, is how this projectile would be effected on ballistics gell.... only then would we be able to make an educated decision on its ethical effects for hunting big game... a soft substance like wax i doubt has the same ballistics efficientcy as lead or copper, would be an interesting vid for this man to make
@1gamoguy that would make a great video, and you're right that would be the only way to tell exactly how suitable it would be for hunting big game. In his video, he shot it through steel, but all that shows is penetration
@MarkRambo1 hit that right on the head! penetration from these is pretty shocking, but what did they do after penetrating that thin layer of steel? i hope irawveteran is reading these comments lol, i would really love to see what these loads are able to do, great idea, looks easy enough to make, and hell if your having a boring sunday, its a nice cheap afternoon project

SUP3RZ0MB1E 3 weeks ago
@fwynn you realize that knives only cut when you drag something across the blade. you can stand on a knive and it will not cut you

i have a remington 870 express magnum. i have a smooth barrel with 3 choke tubes a improved cylinder a modified and a full choke but i want to use them in my rifled barrel. will this make them more accurate?
aaronsname 1 month ago
interesting concept, but i wouldn't go huntung any big game with these.

ElTerrible666 1 month ago
@ElTerrible666 not if you hand loading from primary materials, empty shell, primer, powder, over powder cup, shot cup, and shot. In which case its way cheaper to buy shot than pre-made slugs, now if you cast than that's a different story.
Nwest82 1 month ago
why not buy slugs?
operatingman 1 month ago
I think this bad practice shouldn't be shown on the internet. It's clearly unsafe and very much dependent on the individual ability! Anyway I would never risk my like for few bucks.
If you cannot buy a decent cartridge then don't shoot, it's not for you.....

@Magico070 "If you cannot buy a decent cartridge then don't shoot, it's not for you....."
no offence intended but i think you may want to reread american history. maybe start with the revolutionary war and then focus on trapers and frontiersmen.
iowa887 1 month ago
@Magico070 how do you figure its "clearly unsafe"... and the internet is neutral and "unregulated" how it should be... hes free to put whatever information he wants on the internet. People load their own cartridges all the time.. its cheaper you get a more accurate load and you know exactly what you're shooting.
goofy775 1 month ago
@Magico070 How is it unsafe?? I guess if you do not know ANYTHING it might be i guess, you are not removing or changing the powder load so the grain wieght you do not have to worry about so no chance of blowing up the barrell even if you shot it empty with no shot. The only problem would be if you put in a heavier load and changed the back pressure the other way, think about it, SO, there is no danger at all with the round blowing its wad,,,,LOL
5291joebob 2 weeks ago
@5291joebob You are surely unbalancing the load because the final shot weight is really approximate respect to the original. Indeed the precision, in comparison to a decent slug, is poor! Pressure curves just don't work as simple as you think. Finally people with little or no experience can make several other mistakes. That's my opinion based on facts where people were a little too optimistic about their skills....
Indeed, they had nothing to laugh!

I wouldn't suggest eating that deer if you shoot it with lead tho
McEgglayingostrich 1 month ago
@McEgglayingostrich Every deer I have shot and ate has been with lead. 2 of them were with 1oz lead slugs from a shotgun. My best friend killed and ate a deer with a .50 caliber lead ball from a flintlock. There is nothing wrong with eating a deer shot with a lead projectile
MarkRambo1 1 month ago
@McEgglayingostrich ?? yea iam with mark iam not quite following you on this, i get they have non toxic shot for waterfowl, so not to contaminate the water, and if you live in commifornia you can only shoot copper or alloy bullets, but since hte beginning of firearms lead is the metal of your bullets........ weather it be copper jacketed or not lol and everyone in my familly generation after generation all turned out fine from eating wild game taken with a lead projectile
1gamoguy 1 month ago
@1gamoguy NO, the reason the law changed to steel shot is eating of the animals shot, they do not want humans eating animals with lead in them, that is the reason for the law, the land thing came in later. In Florida where I live you can not shoot SHOT GUNS at all in fruit groves and you can understand why on that one, it is a HUGE fine for that. But the law was made and passed so humans would not eat lead or steel since the shot is so small.
5291joebob 2 weeks ago
@5291joebob You're an expert in your own mind. In the USA, the steel shot rules have been in effect since 1991. If you knew anything about waterfowl you'd know they ingest spent lead pellets while feeding on the bottom of lakes & marshes which finds its way into their gizzards, erode, & dissolve entering the blood stream damaging the liver & kidneys. They surcome to lead poisoning & a rather gay death. Humans are not as susceptible. You've been schooled. "Have nice day!"
DreamReaper338 2 weeks ago
@5291joebob no steel or lead? lol waterfowl loads are steel, unless you buy hevy-shot that is tungsten..... i talked to an ENCON officer about this before it was during our big game season, and we were in the northern zone and he explained to me that since the shot falls into the water, if your duck hunting for example thats why they make it mandatory for non toxic shot, so the lead does not contaminate the water, but hey looks like each state will have different reasons
1gamoguy 2 weeks ago
@5291joebob and to touch on lead shot....... you can choose bullets either all copper, but a majority are lead. you think your not injesting some lead when you eat your venison? i dont know about florida but thats not illegal for big game, hence again why iam believing what i was told by ENCON of why non toxic shot is mandatory for waterfowl
1gamoguy 2 weeks ago
@McEgglayingostrich Pure lead (inorganic) is pretty much bio-unavailable, meaning it doesn't dissolve and enter your bloodstream to a significant degree. the organic forms of lead that were used in gasoline are much more dangerous (tetra-ethyl lead). Pure lead bullets are safe (unless you get shot by them) :)
fastacker2 3 weeks ago 2
@fastacker2
@fastacker2
MrSzymonSz 3 weeks ago
@MrSzymonSz You need to read more. Lead is not brittle in the slightest, it is one of the most soft and malleable metals in existince. In Chemistry, there is a fundamental rule. "Like dissolves like" in other words, non-polar fats, oils, and other similar long chain hydrocarbons all mix well together. Polar inorganic molecules like water and metals and their compunds do not dissolve in organic solutions (People are organic)
Show me a duck that died of lead toxicity. You can't
fastacker2 3 weeks ago
@fastacker2 Sorry about the typos. What passes for public knowledge these days is the product of advertisements by special interest groups and not honest science. I have a Chem E degree, graduated at the top of the class in the 70s back before school curricula were watered down so as not to hurt anyone's feelings. Organic lead is dangerous, pure lead not so much. Certainly not from incidental exposure. I would not advice chronic exposure like having lead dental fillings.
fastacker2 3 weeks ago
@fastacker2 But if a duck ate a few lead pellets, there is no way that would cause it to become ill. But if you soaked the duck in gasoline with a lot of tetraethyl lead in it, the lead would pass transdermally and enter the ducks bloodstream and lymph system and if exposed long enough would harm the duck.
fastacker2 3 weeks ago
@fastacker2 And I don't know where you got the idea that lead killed the condors. The theory that I heard was that ddt was softening the eggs of many birds causing breakage before the chicks could develop and that is why it ddt was made illegal. (Although ddt is now used again to control mosquito borne diseases like malaria, since people are more important than birds. (we are higher on the pecking order) Pun intended.
fastacker2 3 weeks ago
@fastacker2
MrSzymonSz 3 weeks ago
@MrSzymonSz Perhaps unrelated, but I have noticed lately huge numbers of turkey vultures perching on cell phone tower radiating elements. Pretty sure they are getting slowly microwaved to death.
fastacker2 3 weeks ago
@fastacker2
Off course it will become ill if it does that. And if it continues to do so it will eventually die. This has been known for ages. Why do you think they banned lead shots and lead anglers' weights in many places?
MrSzymonSz 3 weeks ago
@MrSzymonSz I of course know that lead shot has been banned for hunting waterfowl. But I have not seen any scientific proof presented to support the lead poisoning theory. I guess if something is simply advertised as truth, that makes it so. Lead killed the Roman Empire, the Earth is flat, the Sun and all of the stars revolve around the Earth. All widely believed "facts" at one time or another.
fastacker2 3 weeks ago
@fastacker2
I assure you there's plenty of evidence to support the ban. Google it if you don't trust me. And I'm not talking about some charity screaming insults towards hunters. I'm talking about serious scientific, peer-reviewed publications.
MrSzymonSz 3 weeks ago
@MrSzymonSz Well, if you assure me, then I have no choice but to believe it. You make Batman very sad.
fastacker2 3 weeks ago
@fastacker2
MrSzymonSz 3 weeks ago
@MrSzymonSz Actually the reverse is true. Some like the shot to be harder, and buy pellets with Antimony as an alloying element. Pure lead is just about the softest metal that exists. An antimony alloy is still non-organic.
fastacker2 3 weeks ago
@fastacker2
That' true. My bad. Either way it's to soft for shots and still no good on its own to make a good expanding bullet. This way or another there's no pure lead in ammunition and lead is still Pb and toxic.
No, you don't have to take my word for that. Just google it and see for yourself.

jackduup 1 month ago
great idea... very interesting, but before anyone would use these to hunt with, and take a deer i would check with your local game regulations. only from my standpoint these shells would be illegal for me to use for big game hunting
1gamoguy 1 month ago
@1gamoguy I live in PA and I think the game commission would consider this a form of buckshot, which is illegal to hunt with
MarkRambo1 1 month ago
@MarkRambo1 yea same here in NY.... but my question is, obviously there are different sizes of buckshot.... now since he is making these with no.8 shot, and the shot does not seperate from the shell.... it does not scatter like buckshot.... i dunno lol sticky situation here, iam sure they would find someway to fuck you if you did hunt with these, personally i would not but its still pretty cool to see it done, think i will call the DEC to find out more info
1gamoguy 1 month ago
@1gamoguy Yeah I agree,.I think they would see it as a sticky situation and might try to screw somebody over. I think I will call the Game Commission here and ask. I mean true you are making it from shot, but in the end it is a single projectile ammunition which I think should be considered a slug
MarkRambo1 1 month ago
@MarkRambo1 what i would really like to see though, is how this projectile would be effected on ballistics gell.... only then would we be able to make an educated decision on its ethical effects for hunting big game... a soft substance like wax i doubt has the same ballistics efficientcy as lead or copper, would be an interesting vid for this man to make
1gamoguy 1 month ago
@1gamoguy that would make a great video, and you're right that would be the only way to tell exactly how suitable it would be for hunting big game. In his video, he shot it through steel, but all that shows is penetration
MarkRambo1 1 month ago
@MarkRambo1 hit that right on the head! penetration from these is pretty shocking, but what did they do after penetrating that thin layer of steel? i hope irawveteran is reading these comments lol, i would really love to see what these loads are able to do, great idea, looks easy enough to make, and hell if your having a boring sunday, its a nice cheap afternoon project
