my new diet was working well but its my experiment but it somewhat involves what atkins diet is sorta about but i also added some stuff that he said to avoid kinda atkins blasphemy... protein and carbs 1 meal a day that has a 2 serving size... so its like the size of 2 tiny meals. so yeah its cal deficiet.. the carbs normally are mixed like complex carbs and simple carbs (adding sugar to stuff) and a natural milk protein shake(not store buaght chemical shakes). it was working until i quit it
My diet (wich was a sucess) was a 1,200 cal diet with 3 meals a day. I ate pastas, veggies(including potatoes), 3-4 oz meat (govt changed daily rec to 4-6oz) and low salt. I lost plenty of lbs... up until the low salt and sugar protien fucked my body up(electrolyte wise) and my hair turned WHITE. i began urinating alot thirsty (symptoms of diabeties) when i went back to eating meat i gained all the weight back ugghhhh... meat makes me fat unless i eat VERY LITTLE like 1x a day of alot of meat.
@True2TheBlueYoViGang I am happy for your success, but I tried strict low Calorie diets and low fat diets. They did not work for me. After years of failing on other plans, the only plan that worked for me was Atkins. I lost 211 pounds doing Atkins. If you are unhappy with eating meat, you can even be a vegetarian and do Atkins.
@bowulf the low cal diet i did i fucked it up a numerous times and still lost weight... veggies are a good way to loose weight but they fucked up my health. i fucked up some sort of balance when i did this diet(its not vegetariean). i felt full i felt energetic healthy great... but my hair started turning white. Eating meat is all i can do and i can only follow a meat eating diet if i like eat 1x a day like 1 big plate of meat or 1 small meal (DBL cheeseburger for ex). meat makes me fat
i get fat eating meat if i eat it like 3 meals a day. will make me gain not loose. yeah im aware phase2 introduces veggies but since i had a bad experience with them im not fucking with them other than potatoes and onions and shit like that. Also my electrolyte comment was for my diet that messed me up ur right meat does aide electrolytes.. especially if its salted (atkins website even tells u not to eat low sodium foods)..my comments a warning
your body needs electrolytes this comes from carbs and complex carbs also with salt and sometimes lime helps. in short term you wont suffer but for a while it can go bad for ya... it did for me actually.. i cut back on salt (cuz we're told its so bad for u), i ate more meat, ate less stuff like carbs and complex carbs...after a few weeks it was a BIG MISTAKE.. and man did i get fucked health wise(not enough characters to explain). *note this diet involved veggies and some meat not atkins diet :/
@True2TheBlueYoViGang True, your body needs electrolytes. False these electrolytes have to come from carbs. Electrolytes like salt, potassium, and calcium can be found in many animal products often in larger amounts than in plants. For more information about one of these, check out my hypokalemia - do you need a banana video. I am not sure what you think the Atkins diet is, but there is vegetables in every phase of the diet.
@bowulf haha hey friend it seems u didnt get my comments i ran out of space quick and got tired of capatchas wot i was saying (altho ive never done the atkins diet) I applied dr. atkins advice on meat consumption and i have to eat meat im just that kind of person that needs2.i tried these otehr diets trust me i did... but only 1 gave me the best sucess ever and it ruined my health and turned my hair white (the one mentioned above) alot of my hair got its color back with meat consumption
@True2TheBlueYoViGang im actually reinventing a diet personally for my self... so far... im going to make a diet (yeah u can say its sorta calorie deficiet counting sorta but not really since i dont count the calorie just plate sizes).. my diet (ive done it but stopped due to economical reasons) consisted of Protein + Carbs (yeah the shit that ppl tell u to avoid). I have a NATURAL PROTEIN SHAKE(no space to explain) with salt and sugar added, meat, and carbs i lost 3lbs 1wk
I loved this video! Great advice, and I am so ready for a change right now. Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge and research. Can't wait to be a success story too! :) xx
I watched every episode of a season of "The Biggest Loser" in less than 48 hours and immediately stopped eating junk food. Now I mostly drink water, I drink a little blueberry juice and drink a Lucozade after a good work out. I mostly eat fruit except for my small breakfast and dinner. It's going good.
Thank you for this video! I have done low/Atkins before. Had success. Then went off the diet and gained back a lot of weight. I've tried many other times and just didn't succeed. I realize what I've done wrong. I've done the things you mention in the video like eating a lot of cheese, having a lot of aspertame, and using a lot of cream on induction and "going off" the diet. I'm on day 4 of induction so it's good that I watched this. Thanks again for this!
you originally inspired me to try the atkins diet so i decided to give it a try i had great success the week i tried it for but i admit it i have an issue i cant live without some kind of sugar. I have a sweet tooth and not being able to have any sort of sweet or desert killed me. Since ive been counting calories ill have a banana grapes or strawberries to statisfy my sweet tooth and with the atkins diet i had nothing :(
@MsBathory7 See I hit rock bottom, and I knew I had to make some sacrifices in order to get healthy. I completely understand where others when not faced with the potential imminent demise might not see it that way. I also could have a mock danish to satisfy my sweet tooth. Best of luck!
I have started Atkins today with BK breakfast bowl, side salad with 2 carb dressing not cheese or tomatoes, 4 raw almonds and 1 1/2 servings of chicken breast. Do you think this was ok?
I think that the problem with people's assumptions about diets is that they don't realize that most diets should be life changing. The good diets are,the bad ones should only be used temperarly or preferrebly not at all. I have also noticed factors like how fast your metabolism is, how much you work out, how dedicated you are to the diet, how much alcohol you drink, if you smoke ciggeretts, if you are active or not active depends also on your progress through a diet. My doctor told me that lol
@bowulf You are absolutely correct. Almost every criticism of the Atkins diet, including how the media negatively portrays it, always distorts the Atkins diet into something that it is not.
@alphacause I really think that if people would actually read the diet and evaluate the diet on its merits that a lot of the knee jerk reactions would go away. I know my initial criticism to my brother was completely unfounded because I had no idea what it was. Thanks for your kind words....
@coughcoughehhem Definitely the right first step... I know I messed up before I actually read the book -- tried to do what I thought the diet was instead of what it actually was.
@mamasuify Yep I think sometimes blame the diet for its failure without actually giving it a shot. It might not be perfect for everyone, but at least if they are going to comment, comment for the right reason.
Thanks very much. I started at 330 lbs, I'm 18 days into induction and down about 13 lbs.....without exercise. I'll be on my bike tomorrow morning and I'll be buying the book this weekend. Thanks again. This video is truly very helpful. BTW, I'll up my leafy greens and veggies a little too.
Good video. I believe that for many people this isn't just a 'fad diet' but a natural correction to the level of glucose that their body can naturally handle, probably based on genetics. So if you hit the goal and then head for the beer and pizza, guess what will happen...
well, I had great success with the Atkins diet a few years ago and then somehow I fell off the wagon completely and went back to my old eating habits (so dumb of me!) Initially, I started out at 142 and dropped down to my ideal weight of 118. Now I am 146 and hating it so I am looking back into atkins because it was doable for me.
@angelwings0428 Well the good news you know what happened the first time, and now you can guard yourself against making the same mistake again. Recognize the why of the first time, and start working to ensure that doesn't happen again (boredom, food choice rut, depressed, self-doubt, etc.).
The Ketogenic Diet used by athletes is not about 1 week low carb and one week high carb, its about 5 to 6 days on low carb and one to 2 days onhigh carb.
Actually there are lots of athletes and even coaches that recommend a ketogenic diet not cyclical or even 5 on -2 off, but consistently low carb through out. I find that method works infinitely better for me than to try figure which day I am supposed to be eating or to constantly have the cravings on the "on" days. My performance has only increased since being on ketogenic diets, and is actually better now than it was 16 years ago in my early 20s.
With only 3 kg, it means you need to migrate from Induction to OWL to Pre-maintenance probably pretty quickly. No long term Induction for you, but you do get to learn the lessons really quickly as you learn how certain foods affect you.
They are different phases of the diet. It just means you need to either start watching videos, which may be the more inefficient way, or reading the book. The book explains everything in a concise where you are today to where you need to go.
Perhaps... Although that would just make progressing through the other phases to the final maintenance phase more difficult. As the only way to tell if you had a negative reaction to say adding alcohol or high sugar fruit back into the diet would be to experience a weight bounce.
Ideally you'd lose 1-2 kg then lose the next 1 kg over the next 2 months as you add the foods back into your diet via the rungs.
i am from Israel, we can't get the first book over here only th "healty" one i am trying to do the diet i know that i can eat all meats but can you help me in cheese how mutch and what kind? and about vegetable how much and which?
You can certainly buy the right book off Amazon or most second hand book stores. The correct ISBN is:
# ISBN-10: 1590770021
# ISBN-13: 978-1590770023
Check out my Induction videos ("Acceptable Foods -- the good, the bad , and the pork rinds" video) and the Introduction video. If you google Atkins Induction Acceptable Foods List and Atkins Induction Rules, you'll probably get pretty close too.
Yes, you would be an ideal candidate for the Atkins Diet. If you are under your doctor's care, I would give him a heads up though as his treatment might be different. If he disagrees with your choice, I would have a hard talk with my doctor.
thanks for your respond! I've tried so many kinds of diet, before i was on raw food diet for 1 month, I work-out 2 hours/day and i didn't lose any weight at all, maybe I ate too much fruits or nuts. You are very successful, so I decided to start Atkins Diet soon, I will buy Dr. Atkins book today, I've seen there's a new one on Atkins website, I'm not sure if the old one is better, can you tell me which one is good?
I swear by the 2002 version of the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution book. It is the same book that has gotten me and countless others to goal, and was also published before a lot of the big money entered the low carb arena.
People fail on Atkins because it's not a good diet to begin with. The reason most people look to this type of diet is because they failed to understand and apply a natural diet with whole foods from all major food groups. Bowulf is not helping things by further confusing the public with this unnatural path to water and muscle loss.Low Carb dieting makes you look Old. It makes you look worn down....because you are. Your blood glucose is flatlined and you're sacrificing needed protein and muscle.
hey thanks f0r y0ur inf0, but i have had the Iap band sugery i can't have miIk, bread, 0r pasta, pretty simiIar t0 the atkins diet? but i can have chesse werid, huh? c0UId u d0 a recipe that fetures meat and cheese but n0 bread 0r miIk? that w0uId be great thanks f0r y0ur care t0 heIp us dieters 0ut there.
Check out my quiche (Sausage Broccoli Quiche) video posted here on YouTube. It features Cream, but not milk. You might also look for a low carb pizza recipe. Best of luck!
Well, I can't account for how you did Atkins. Did you drink 64 oz of water every day? Did you progress to the Ongoing Weight Loss phase? After 4 months what rung were you on?
After 5.5 years I never had an issue with uric acid, and have not heard any other reports except from one guy who wasn't drinking enough water (only diet cokes). Low potassium can also cause leg pains.
For me it's made me the healthiest, most active guy I have ever been.
many people are lazy in general causing their weight problem, lists of acceptable veggies are listed for free on websites so people can get the info with ease. Many people will fail at every diet for this reason, they just are too lazy to follow the guidelines. Bottom line, it works for those who follow it and it doesn't if you don't. i couldn't agree more with everything in your video! people take it too extreme and can't stick with it for more than a few weeks etc.
Really good advice. Personally I don't follow the Atkins diet but it has really good points for losing weight. Also dont look at it like a diet but as a life style from now on. I just to weight 270 last year and now im at 180 and have learned alot about nutrition. Basically just clean food,5-6 meals, don't starve yourself and workout. But the number one thing is not to give up and work hard. Remember nothing taste as good as looking good so good luck.
While too much sodium is not necessarily good, I have never found a reason to adjust it. Water retention is temporary, and my blood pressure (100/63) is low if anything.
Depends on the type of pickle. Cucumbers and vinegar (how you make pickles) are Induction friendly. Sweet pickles are obviously out. Dill pickles and some bread butter pickles are acceptable. You have to check the labels for sugar or any sugar-like items.
Yes, spices are allowed on the Atkins Diet, so things like pepper, salt, garlic, and cinnamon are allowed. Even spices you don't think of are allowed, like Cocoa powder. Just be sure to count the carbs in the spices you use.
If it was simply that (Calorie in Calorie Out), then why do people on Atkins or other ketogenic diets lose more weight over the short term and prolonged periods while eating the same or more Calories than other diets in multiple different studies.
You don't eat more calories. The protein in the diet helps to keep you full, and thus, you eat less because of less hunger. And most studies done, prove the people on the Low carb diet always eat as little as the people on low fat/low calorie diets. Sorry, but you're wrong.
Check out the Harvard Study by Penelope Greene. She studied the difference between low Fat followers and low Carb followers on similar Caloric and disparate Caloric intake, and she found that the Low Carb followers lost more weight on both the same and additional Calories than the low fat followers. (>25000 Cals over the course of the study) For more info and studies, check out my Calorie-In Calorie Out video.
In the real world anecdotal evidence, I lost more weight eating 3-4000 Calories per day on low carb than I did on a strict 1500 Calorie per day diet. Yes, ketosis assists in appetite supression, but like the previously mentioned study points out, LC followers do have metabolic advantage over LF dieters.
When prior to Atkins, yes religiously with a food journal.
After Atkins, only because the Fitday site automatically did. I used Fitday to track my carbohydrate intake, and it reports on Caloric intake as well.
This is easily the most powerful video I've seen you make, Kent. It's got the right attitude to drive home the message for when people go off on their own. I'm sure it'll save someone some unnecessary weight loss heartache.
Thanks for the comments. I know I always to stay in the camp sure to succeed as opposed to the group who had to question whether or not they were going to this week. Even off weeks on the scale were temporary or guilt-free because I know I was doing the right thing, and it was just a matter of time.
I am down to 260 and it is easy. I can and will eat 1/2 a pizza but will be back to paleo. The reason is Gary Taubes book mainly that to control diabetes, heart heath, cancer and weight lowcarb is the way to go. It is the long term healthy way to live.
I was on atkins and went from 240 to 200, however I listened to the naysayers that the diet was not long term healthy. Thus when I hit 200 I stopped by Papa Johns and had a 1//2 pizza and it did not effect my weight loss. Thus I decided I would just control my eating. Well I hit 284. BTW everyday I thought I was still dieting and every day I was hungry eating 2 bean burritos a day.
Anyway I ran across Livin a la vida low-carb and paleo, which is what I am on. This time it is longterm.
I am glad you are able to educate people now on what the consequence of their action might be or how one action might cascade into a series of actions. One might not derail you, but the series of them will.
I am another one in the "easy" camp. For me, it was just simply inertia after I started. I just kept doing the same thing and the weight left or stayed off.
I have just discovered that I have Celiac Disease . I was wonderig if I can still continue the Atkins diet while having this disease ( well, I really dont like calling it a "disease")
Thank you Kent!!! is there a special number other than my own CCLL that will allow me to go into lipolisis and ketosis? I am not sure I understand that whole process between Induction vs OWL do you remain in Lipolisis and ketosis as you increase your carbs and find my CCLL? Hope this is not to confusing. sorry for my lack of knowledge. I know you probably can clear this upfor me. Thank you. by the way I went on the Atkins board today for the first time. thanks for the direction... your awsome :)
If you eat below 50g, you will be in a ketogenic state. You will be burning fat for fuel -- your body has no other choice. As you increase your carbs to even perhaps above 50g you will still lose weight but your ketone production will be reduced.
The first step of OWL is to start adding carbs in the rungs by an additional 5g per week until you reliably do not lose any longer. That amount is your CCLL
I never reached my goal of 225 lbs which is another 150 lbs away... I basically added to many carbs and went into maintinance prematurely. I was at about 75g carbs a day and have been at 370 to 380lbs for the past 6 to 8 months... I dusted off my Atkins book and started to read again & listen to the CD's alot more intensely. In the past few days I started to bring my carbs back down. Do I need to start back at induction? Please let me know your thoughts on this. thank you SLIMQUEST :)
My opinion is that if your eating is under control and you have no over-powering cravings, you can make the decision to start back into the diet at your CCLL. If however you are having difficulty or excess cravings, redo Induction and progress rapidly through the carb ladder.
Thank you... I have done the Induction phase once before and was on OWL for the first 100 lbs I lost... I ended up maintaining up and down about 10 lbs over the past 6 to 8 months... I was going to go though Induction again but I thought I heard you mention that it might be better to just go back to my old CCLL which is about 35 to 45g of carbs. Please let me know what you think, will I be able to achieve lipolisis and ketosis again and lose the weight without going through induction again?
Hello Kent, when you were doing the induction phase for the first year did you take any suppliments? what did you take? what do you recommend? thank you for your help...
I have a supplement video that explains more fully my ideas on supplements, but mostly it was just a multivitamin and occassionally CoQ-10 and L-Carnitine. The video explains what those last two are really used for, but my philosophy is to get most of my nutrients and minerals from my food and to cover my bases with the multi-. Then I recommend treating specific symptoms as needed.
quilty as charged. Oh its so hard even though I have read the books. What the heck do I eat if I am on the road 8-12 hours a day? Its so hard....thanks for trying to help and you hit it right on with this video.
That might be an idea for a future video being that I was just on vacation in California, and we had to eat out 3 meals a day. It can be done, and most restaurants you can find something acceptable on the menu.
The easiest - any fast food or burger joint. You simply ask for a burger without a bun add lettuce. Add a caesar side salad and you have a decent meal.
Mexican - fajitas no torts, rice. beans, add lettuce
Mongolian BBQ - easy choice, check sauces or just oil
For an easy snack, you can make some easy cheese crisps (nuke shredded cheese) or get good quality meat sticks or summer sausage without the corn syrup.
Thank you very much for all the info... I paid Doctors a whole lot more than that to tell me things that are not nearly as important to my life and health than you share here on YouTube... So anything I can do to show my appreciation, let me know... I just want to get healthy and stay that way for the rest of my life as you have... Keep up the great work... maybe once I lose all my weight and become healthy I can spread the word and pay back as you have. Thanks for you inspiration! SLIMQUEST :)
Please send me a bill if you feel I am asking to many questions, I do not want to wear out your kindness and your time with all my questions... let me know... thanks again... SLIMQUEST :)
I am happy to answer them as I have time (outside of work), but if you feel you must contribute, I am toying with the voluntary Youtube download video function above. It might or might not put 99 cents in my pocket for each download. I fully realize one can download the video via 100 different free methods too, so it's more of a tip jar approach.
Like I said, I don't do this for money. I do this to help more people obtain the success I did and repay the service of others shown to me. :-)
Hello Kent, where is the best place to get 65% fat in my diet? Is there healthier fat than others to eat?... what is the best oil to cook in, atkins said not to heat up Polys due to conversion to bad fats... Have you ever considered offering your services as a consultant or coach? I would be interested, I need alot of help, I am very determined & motivated to get this weight off once and for all, start 475 lbs now 380 lbs but took 3 years up and down, I need another 150 lbs loss. thanks again.
I do occassionally run an Atkins Diet boot camp here on Youtube, but it is a free service that I donate my time too. I am always leery of thinking to charge for my services or advice as I received countless numbers of helpful suggestions and I believe I am just repaying the service or favor to others. The gift of my returned life and health is that amazing to me.
As for where to get fats, I would suggest oils and meat. The only fat off limit or unhealthy is trans fat (dreadful concoction).
There are some better oils than others to fry in. I am personally not a big fan of canola oil which used to be an industrial oil until someone discovered it was low in sat fats. I personally prefer to use butter, peanut, and coconut oil to fry in, but will deep fry in corn oil due to cost and high smoke temp. The lower smoke temp of sunflower etc oils make them particularly bad for most things. Olive oil is not bad as a seasoning, but breaks down way to cook to use for frying.
Coconut oil is delicious. I saute my chicken breasts in it. What's interesting is that you don't need to use much, as a little goes a long way. It imparts a light and fresh coconut taste to the chicken (not overpowering at all). I got mine at Whole Foods Market.
Thank you Kent... I appreciate your help... I figured out that I not have more than 10oz of protien a day based on the high end... I tend to eat alot of protien and want to keep that in check... Is the total protien per day only from eggs, meat, chicken or fish or is it from all foods combined? thanks again for your help...
The protein amount is from all sources, and roughly get between 100g-160g per day depending on my mood. There is certainly protein in my diet from lots of different sources - nuts, cheese, meat, eggs, etc, but the primary source is of course meat of some sort.
Hello kent, is there any medical test I need to take to see if I will burn fat for energy effeicently enough to be healthy on this diet? or does everyone have that ability to burn fat for fuel? If you do not eat carbs, how does your blood sugar stay at normal levels? Will my body automatically keep my blood sugar levels normal by burning the fat for fuel? Do I ever have to worry about low blood sugars on this diet? Please let me know trying to get past this hurdle... Thanks for your help...
There really is not a test, but I haven't really ever found someone who won't work well on the diet. Some people have worse Induction flu symptoms (like me) than others due to past diet and their prevalence on Carbs, but it isn't a death sentence to the diet success in them.
Your blood sugar levels stay at normal levels -- remember you do eat carbs in all phases of the diet, and the body is able to create from protein carbs through gluconeogenesis. Those with diabetes should talk with doc.
The reason to talk with doc as my 2 diabetes videos point out that blood glucose levels can be normalized within two days of starting the diet, so it is important to get one's insulin levels adjusted as rapidly. The old insulin levels can indeed cause the low blood sugar levels by over-medicating oneself.
I would suggest watching my diabetes videos for more information about BG levels while on Atkins and of course talk with your doc or Mary Ross Vernon (premier diabetes doc) if diabetic.
Hello Kent, Great Video... can you let me know what the best ratios are of Fat, Protien and Carbs on Induction? and the same for the OWL Phase? also the what is the Protien formula, do you base it on current weight or the weight you want to be at goal? I am starting Atkins again, reading the book and listening to the CD... Thank you... best regards, SLIMQUEST :)
The best ratios for Induction are 65%F- 30%P - 5%C. As one progresses to OWL, that number becomes more personal as the top number (Fat) drops and the Carb number raises. I would say that by end of OWL Some people may be around 40-30-30 while others may still be around 50-30-20.
The protein formula I have mentioned elsewhere that it depends on one's activity. It varies from .8g per kg of body weight to 1.6g per kg. 30% is a good rough number to shoot for the average Atkineer.
Cool video but you might not want to compare any diet situation to the concentration camps. I am not Jewish but I am fairly sure that the Holocaust was far worse than a bad attempt at Atkins. On the other hand being too PC is not good either.
My point was not to compare the activity or the experience, but to compare the Caloric intake of the two groups. This person was consistently in 600-800 Calorie range which is roughly what they fed the prisoners or Allied soldiers at the Concentration Camps. It was not meant to trivialize their experience or the horror of the Camps, but most people know what the emaciation resulted from that torture.
My apologies to anyone upset others would voluntarily starve themselves or by my analogy.
So are you arguing for a no carb approach? The only things eliminated by Atkins is one's propensity for doughnut and candy eating. Why would I want to fill my body with junk fuel? If I expect it to perform, I need to fuel it with fuel adequate for the job and fuel that won't leave it in a worse condition than before eating it.
Panna Cotta has nailed my wife and I from time to time too. It is just such a good and easy treat, but again has a high dairy amount. It's easy to do to get lax on a rule and then get nailed by an unintended effect. You are very welcome.
its so good! lol but that must have been my problem cause I have been eating alot of it lately and the weight doesn't move. I read the book too, but looks like I'd better read it again. Other then that I've stuck to the diet perfectly. Now I have a question..since i started atkins again I started the induction phase but added fruit right away, not a heavy amount but once in a while, was that a bad idea since I was just starting it again?
The idea of the rungs was only a suggestion, so if you really would like to have fruit before nuts/seeds or more dairy, there is nothing wrong with adjusting the rungs. Strawberries being in season was a major draw for me even when I was losing.
You being a veteran of Atkins should know where you ketosis level of carbs, and therefore you are more just picking up after being off. Second timers always could have the op to pick up where they left. With just reminder we can all learn new things.
Kent I'm not just a 2nd timer, I'm way past that, I've started over so many times on atkins, and I go off cause I get it in my head that I could lose weight on my own, but I'm always wrong. I feel great when I'm on it too. Things in my life stress me out and I go back to my old ways of eating. I'm scared...
question, have you ever watched blaines low carb kitchen?
I have watched it in the past, but then I lost FitTV where it was being broadcast. I haven't seen it in a long while though. He did have a number of interesting recipes, but some of his items were a little too foo-foo or complex for me.
Ooooo, you had me pegged, when we do screw up a day to three days do you go and start induction all over again or continue on the second phase where you were at when you fell off the wagon?
Really depends on the why a person screwed up -- was it a failure to plan for a unique situation (like a restaurant where acceptability was in question) or was it due a cheat AND is that cheat back under control. If it is the second, then returning to Induction to ensure your eating is back under control might be advisable.
If it's the first scenario, do the due diligence to plan better and understand what you could have done differently, and keep going where you are at in the diet.
Thaks Kent.... Another great video. I really need to read the book cause even though I have been on this lifestyle change for almost 2 months now, Im sure there is a lot more that i do not know about it.....
I too keep hitting the book from time to time, and still find nuggets of wisdom to be mined. There is just so much good information in it. It is such a quick read through the Induction and OWL chapters, and really helps in setting the stage for long term success.
Hey thanks for watching. I hope this prevents some people from using it as a fad and realize how good a long life of Low Carb can be. Congrats on being such a success story!
Thanks Kent. I love your videos and find your insights always helpful. I'm one of those relatively new subscribers.
I've been low-carbing since Nov. 1, 2008 and have lost 72 pounds so far. I've never been this successful on a diet before and the reason for the success is just as you said; I'm not on a diet, I made a lifestyle change. Again thanks for the little pep talk. Looking forward to you next video.
That is fantastic progress for 7 months! It is once we realize how different our lives are now, and how easy it usually is to live that new life that our success becomes a matter of time. Good job, and thanks for watching.
I agree a lot of these items are valid for whether it be Atkins or South Beach or even Low Fat. Anytime you don't make it long term changes or do into it half butt with only a smidge of knowledge, you are dooming yourself for ultimate failure.
my new diet was working well but its my experiment but it somewhat involves what atkins diet is sorta about but i also added some stuff that he said to avoid kinda atkins blasphemy... protein and carbs 1 meal a day that has a 2 serving size... so its like the size of 2 tiny meals. so yeah its cal deficiet.. the carbs normally are mixed like complex carbs and simple carbs (adding sugar to stuff) and a natural milk protein shake(not store buaght chemical shakes). it was working until i quit it

@True2TheBlueYoViGang I am happy for your success, but I tried strict low Calorie diets and low fat diets. They did not work for me. After years of failing on other plans, the only plan that worked for me was Atkins. I lost 211 pounds doing Atkins. If you are unhappy with eating meat, you can even be a vegetarian and do Atkins.
bowulf 1 month ago
@bowulf the low cal diet i did i fucked it up a numerous times and still lost weight... veggies are a good way to loose weight but they fucked up my health. i fucked up some sort of balance when i did this diet(its not vegetariean). i felt full i felt energetic healthy great... but my hair started turning white. Eating meat is all i can do and i can only follow a meat eating diet if i like eat 1x a day like 1 big plate of meat or 1 small meal (DBL cheeseburger for ex). meat makes me fat
True2TheBlueYoViGang 1 month ago
@True2TheBlueYoViGang
i get fat eating meat if i eat it like 3 meals a day. will make me gain not loose. yeah im aware phase2 introduces veggies but since i had a bad experience with them im not fucking with them other than potatoes and onions and shit like that. Also my electrolyte comment was for my diet that messed me up ur right meat does aide electrolytes.. especially if its salted (atkins website even tells u not to eat low sodium foods)..my comments a warning
True2TheBlueYoViGang 1 month ago
your body needs electrolytes this comes from carbs and complex carbs also with salt and sometimes lime helps. in short term you wont suffer but for a while it can go bad for ya... it did for me actually.. i cut back on salt (cuz we're told its so bad for u), i ate more meat, ate less stuff like carbs and complex carbs...after a few weeks it was a BIG MISTAKE.. and man did i get fucked health wise(not enough characters to explain). *note this diet involved veggies and some meat not atkins diet :/
True2TheBlueYoViGang 1 month ago
@True2TheBlueYoViGang True, your body needs electrolytes. False these electrolytes have to come from carbs. Electrolytes like salt, potassium, and calcium can be found in many animal products often in larger amounts than in plants. For more information about one of these, check out my hypokalemia - do you need a banana video. I am not sure what you think the Atkins diet is, but there is vegetables in every phase of the diet.
bowulf 1 month ago
@bowulf haha hey friend it seems u didnt get my comments i ran out of space quick and got tired of capatchas wot i was saying (altho ive never done the atkins diet) I applied dr. atkins advice on meat consumption and i have to eat meat im just that kind of person that needs2.i tried these otehr diets trust me i did... but only 1 gave me the best sucess ever and it ruined my health and turned my hair white (the one mentioned above) alot of my hair got its color back with meat consumption
True2TheBlueYoViGang 1 month ago
@True2TheBlueYoViGang im actually reinventing a diet personally for my self... so far... im going to make a diet (yeah u can say its sorta calorie deficiet counting sorta but not really since i dont count the calorie just plate sizes).. my diet (ive done it but stopped due to economical reasons) consisted of Protein + Carbs (yeah the shit that ppl tell u to avoid). I have a NATURAL PROTEIN SHAKE(no space to explain) with salt and sugar added, meat, and carbs i lost 3lbs 1wk

Since ive been counting calories ill have a banana grapes or strawberries to statisfy my sweet tooth and with the atkins diet i had nothing :(
MsBathory7 6 months ago
@MsBathory7 See I hit rock bottom, and I knew I had to make some sacrifices in order to get healthy. I completely understand where others when not faced with the potential imminent demise might not see it that way. I also could have a mock danish to satisfy my sweet tooth. Best of luck!

My doctor told me that lol
dragonlion5161 1 year ago
@bowulf You are absolutely correct. Almost every criticism of the Atkins diet, including how the media negatively portrays it, always distorts the Atkins diet into something that it is not.
alphacause 1 year ago 2
@alphacause I really think that if people would actually read the diet and evaluate the diet on its merits that a lot of the knee jerk reactions would go away. I know my initial criticism to my brother was completely unfounded because I had no idea what it was. Thanks for your kind words....

TreachMarkets 1 year ago
Good video. I believe that for many people this isn't just a 'fad diet' but a natural correction to the level of glucose that their body can naturally handle, probably based on genetics. So if you hit the goal and then head for the beer and pizza, guess what will happen...
TreachMarkets 1 year ago
well, I had great success with the Atkins diet a few years ago and then somehow I fell off the wagon completely and went back to my old eating habits (so dumb of me!) Initially, I started out at 142 and dropped down to my ideal weight of 118. Now I am 146 and hating it so I am looking back into atkins because it was doable for me.
angelwings0428 1 year ago
@angelwings0428 Well the good news you know what happened the first time, and now you can guard yourself against making the same mistake again. Recognize the why of the first time, and start working to ensure that doesn't happen again (boredom, food choice rut, depressed, self-doubt, etc.).

The Ketogenic Diet used by athletes is not about 1 week low carb and one week high carb, its about 5 to 6 days on low carb and one to 2 days onhigh carb.
zegonzales 1 year ago
Actually there are lots of athletes and even coaches that recommend a ketogenic diet not cyclical or even 5 on -2 off, but consistently low carb through out. I find that method works infinitely better for me than to try figure which day I am supposed to be eating or to constantly have the cravings on the "on" days. My performance has only increased since being on ketogenic diets, and is actually better now than it was 16 years ago in my early 20s.
bowulf 1 year ago
p.s i have to loose only 3 kilo does it matter?
liziziv 1 year ago
With only 3 kg, it means you need to migrate from Induction to OWL to Pre-maintenance probably pretty quickly. No long term Induction for you, but you do get to learn the lessons really quickly as you learn how certain foods affect you.
bowulf 1 year ago
from Induction to OWL ?
i did not understand...
liziziv 1 year ago
They are different phases of the diet. It just means you need to either start watching videos, which may be the more inefficient way, or reading the book. The book explains everything in a concise where you are today to where you need to go.
bowulf 1 year ago
thanks alot you helped me alot i watched your video's and i understand now more
do you think that i can loose this 3 kilo in two weeke if i do the first phase?
liziziv 1 year ago

If you google Atkins Induction Acceptable Foods List and Atkins Induction Rules, you'll probably get pretty close too.

lily5377 1 year ago
Yes, you would be an ideal candidate for the Atkins Diet. If you are under your doctor's care, I would give him a heads up though as his treatment might be different. If he disagrees with your choice, I would have a hard talk with my doctor.

Dear bowulf,
thanks for your respond! I've tried so many kinds of diet, before i was on raw food diet for 1 month, I work-out 2 hours/day and i didn't lose any weight at all, maybe I ate too much fruits or nuts. You are very successful, so I decided to start Atkins Diet soon, I will buy Dr. Atkins book today, I've seen there's a new one on Atkins website, I'm not sure if the old one is better, can you tell me which one is good?
lily5377 1 year ago
I swear by the 2002 version of the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution book. It is the same book that has gotten me and countless others to goal, and was also published before a lot of the big money entered the low carb arena.
bowulf 1 year ago
Thank you very much for your help! I bought the 2002 version today, thanks again
lily5377 1 year ago
People fail on Atkins because it's not a good diet to begin with. The reason most people look to this type of diet is because they failed to understand and apply a natural diet with whole foods from all major food groups. Bowulf is not helping things by further confusing the public with this unnatural path to water and muscle loss.Low Carb dieting makes you look Old. It makes you look worn down....because you are. Your blood glucose is flatlined and you're sacrificing needed protein and muscle.
brushfour 1 year ago
Or perhaps you failed on the diet because you did it wrong. I gained muscle performance while proceeding to lose 211 pounds.
".Low Carb dieting makes you look Old."

atkins diet is awesome (BUT) there's a side-affect.
i did atkins diet for a while and i lost weight but after 4 months the uric-acid in my body increased soo my legs hurt like hell.
i'm telling you this because it's not the best way to lose weight.
invu91MaTT 2 years ago
Well, I can't account for how you did Atkins. Did you drink 64 oz of water every day? Did you progress to the Ongoing Weight Loss phase? After 4 months what rung were you on?
After 5.5 years I never had an issue with uric acid, and have not heard any other reports except from one guy who wasn't drinking enough water (only diet cokes). Low potassium can also cause leg pains.
For me it's made me the healthiest, most active guy I have ever been.
bowulf 2 years ago
many people are lazy in general causing their weight problem, lists of acceptable veggies are listed for free on websites so people can get the info with ease. Many people will fail at every diet for this reason, they just are too lazy to follow the guidelines. Bottom line, it works for those who follow it and it doesn't if you don't. i couldn't agree more with everything in your video! people take it too extreme and can't stick with it for more than a few weeks etc.
apman0000 2 years ago

What great points. I really think eating the intro is a healthy way to eat in general. If you do it right.
tennis2me 2 years ago
Really good advice. Personally I don't follow the Atkins diet but it has really good points for losing weight. Also dont look at it like a diet but as a life style from now on. I just to weight 270 last year and now im at 180 and have learned alot about nutrition. Basically just clean food,5-6 meals, don't starve yourself and workout. But the number one thing is not to give up and work hard. Remember nothing taste as good as looking good so good luck.
MasterPlayer1000 2 years ago
what about the sodium, would it cause water retention
kim24may 2 years ago
While too much sodium is not necessarily good, I have never found a reason to adjust it. Water retention is temporary, and my blood pressure (100/63) is low if anything.
bowulf 2 years ago
what about pickles,i heard they were not induction friendly
kim24may 2 years ago
Depends on the type of pickle. Cucumbers and vinegar (how you make pickles) are Induction friendly. Sweet pickles are obviously out. Dill pickles and some bread butter pickles are acceptable. You have to check the labels for sugar or any sugar-like items.
bowulf 2 years ago
can u have salt on the Atkins diet
kim24may 2 years ago
Yes, spices are allowed on the Atkins Diet, so things like pepper, salt, garlic, and cinnamon are allowed. Even spices you don't think of are allowed, like Cocoa powder. Just be sure to count the carbs in the spices you use.
bowulf 2 years ago
And don't say I don't have any room to talk, because I have personally done both low cal and low carb.
PsychopathInFoil 2 years ago
You can always give your opinion, but that doesn't mean you are right.
bowulf 2 years ago
Atkins diet, like any other diet = Calories in calories out.
PsychopathInFoil 2 years ago
If it was simply that (Calorie in Calorie Out), then why do people on Atkins or other ketogenic diets lose more weight over the short term and prolonged periods while eating the same or more Calories than other diets in multiple different studies.
bowulf 2 years ago
You don't eat more calories. The protein in the diet helps to keep you full, and thus, you eat less because of less hunger. And most studies done, prove the people on the Low carb diet always eat as little as the people on low fat/low calorie diets. Sorry, but you're wrong.
PsychopathInFoil 2 years ago 2
Check out the Harvard Study by Penelope Greene. She studied the difference between low Fat followers and low Carb followers on similar Caloric and disparate Caloric intake, and she found that the Low Carb followers lost more weight on both the same and additional Calories than the low fat followers. (>25000 Cals over the course of the study) For more info and studies, check out my Calorie-In Calorie Out video.
bowulf 2 years ago
In the real world anecdotal evidence, I lost more weight eating 3-4000 Calories per day on low carb than I did on a strict 1500 Calorie per day diet. Yes, ketosis assists in appetite supression, but like the previously mentioned study points out, LC followers do have metabolic advantage over LF dieters.
bowulf 2 years ago
Did you actually COUNT your calories?
PsychopathInFoil 2 years ago
When prior to Atkins, yes religiously with a food journal.
After Atkins, only because the Fitday site automatically did. I used Fitday to track my carbohydrate intake, and it reports on Caloric intake as well.
bowulf 2 years ago
I'm not gonna lie. When I did atkins, there were days here and there where I could litterally go without eating, which occured atleast once a week.

I am down to 260 and it is easy. I can and will eat 1/2 a pizza but will be back to paleo. The reason is Gary Taubes book mainly that to control diabetes, heart heath, cancer and weight lowcarb is the way to go. It is the long term healthy way to live.
pirucreek 2 years ago
I was on atkins and went from 240 to 200, however I listened to the naysayers that the diet was not long term healthy. Thus when I hit 200 I stopped by Papa Johns and had a 1//2 pizza and it did not effect my weight loss. Thus I decided I would just control my eating. Well I hit 284. BTW everyday I thought I was still dieting and every day I was hungry eating 2 bean burritos a day.
Anyway I ran across Livin a la vida low-carb and paleo, which is what I am on. This time it is longterm.

A very powerful story...

SlimQuest 2 years ago
Check out my OWL video for the best explanation.

SlimQuest 2 years ago
My opinion is that if your eating is under control and you have no over-powering cravings, you can make the decision to start back into the diet at your CCLL. If however you are having difficulty or excess cravings, redo Induction and progress rapidly through the carb ladder.
bowulf 2 years ago
Thank you... I have done the Induction phase once before and was on OWL for the first 100 lbs I lost... I ended up maintaining up and down about 10 lbs over the past 6 to 8 months... I was going to go though Induction again but I thought I heard you mention that it might be better to just go back to my old CCLL which is about 35 to 45g of carbs. Please let me know what you think, will I be able to achieve lipolisis and ketosis again and lose the weight without going through induction again?
SlimQuest 2 years ago
Hello Kent, when you were doing the induction phase for the first year did you take any suppliments? what did you take? what do you recommend? thank you for your help...
SlimQuest 2 years ago
I have a supplement video that explains more fully my ideas on supplements, but mostly it was just a multivitamin and occassionally CoQ-10 and L-Carnitine. The video explains what those last two are really used for, but my philosophy is to get most of my nutrients and minerals from my food and to cover my bases with the multi-. Then I recommend treating specific symptoms as needed.

Steakhouse - nuff said

I do occassionally run an Atkins Diet boot camp here on Youtube, but it is a free service that I donate my time too. I am always leery of thinking to charge for my services or advice as I received countless numbers of helpful suggestions and I believe I am just repaying the service or favor to others. The gift of my returned life and health is that amazing to me.
As for where to get fats, I would suggest oils and meat. The only fat off limit or unhealthy is trans fat (dreadful concoction).
bowulf 2 years ago
There are some better oils than others to fry in. I am personally not a big fan of canola oil which used to be an industrial oil until someone discovered it was low in sat fats. I personally prefer to use butter, peanut, and coconut oil to fry in, but will deep fry in corn oil due to cost and high smoke temp. The lower smoke temp of sunflower etc oils make them particularly bad for most things. Olive oil is not bad as a seasoning, but breaks down way to cook to use for frying.
bowulf 2 years ago
Coconut oil is delicious. I saute my chicken breasts in it. What's interesting is that you don't need to use much, as a little goes a long way. It imparts a light and fresh coconut taste to the chicken (not overpowering at all). I got mine at Whole Foods Market.

I really like it to sautee in or wherever one might use olive oil, I think coconut oil works just as well.

SlimQuest 2 years ago

SlimQuest 2 years ago
There really is not a test, but I haven't really ever found someone who won't work well on the diet. Some people have worse Induction flu symptoms (like me) than others due to past diet and their prevalence on Carbs, but it isn't a death sentence to the diet success in them.
Your blood sugar levels stay at normal levels -- remember you do eat carbs in all phases of the diet, and the body is able to create from protein carbs through gluconeogenesis. Those with diabetes should talk with doc.
bowulf 2 years ago

SlimQuest 2 years ago

BIGSBYTREM 2 years ago
My point was not to compare the activity or the experience, but to compare the Caloric intake of the two groups. This person was consistently in 600-800 Calorie range which is roughly what they fed the prisoners or Allied soldiers at the Concentration Camps. It was not meant to trivialize their experience or the horror of the Camps, but most people know what the emaciation resulted from that torture.
My apologies to anyone upset others would voluntarily starve themselves or by my analogy.
bowulf 2 years ago
No upset, just that NO food is different from what kind of food. Ap lan to remove is not the same as a plan to lessen!
BIGSBYTREM 2 years ago
So are you arguing for a no carb approach? The only things eliminated by Atkins is one's propensity for doughnut and candy eating. Why would I want to fill my body with junk fuel? If I expect it to perform, I need to fuel it with fuel adequate for the job and fuel that won't leave it in a worse condition than before eating it.

EXCELLENT reminders, Kent! Or, as you say, "of course Kent Altena." :D :D :D

Panna Cotta has nailed my wife and I from time to time too. It is just such a good and easy treat, but again has a high dairy amount. It's easy to do to get lax on a rule and then get nailed by an unintended effect. You are very welcome.
bowulf 2 years ago
its so good! lol but that must have been my problem cause I have been eating alot of it lately and the weight doesn't move. I read the book too, but looks like I'd better read it again. Other then that I've stuck to the diet perfectly. Now I have a question..since i started atkins again I started the induction phase but added fruit right away, not a heavy amount but once in a while, was that a bad idea since I was just starting it again?
ShrinkingTonyG 2 years ago
The idea of the rungs was only a suggestion, so if you really would like to have fruit before nuts/seeds or more dairy, there is nothing wrong with adjusting the rungs. Strawberries being in season was a major draw for me even when I was losing.
You being a veteran of Atkins should know where you ketosis level of carbs, and therefore you are more just picking up after being off. Second timers always could have the op to pick up where they left. With just reminder we can all learn new things.
bowulf 2 years ago
yeah I've been eating strawberry's :)
ShrinkingTonyG 2 years ago
I have watched it in the past, but then I lost FitTV where it was being broadcast. I haven't seen it in a long while though. He did have a number of interesting recipes, but some of his items were a little too foo-foo or complex for me.

bowulf 2 years ago
Ooooo, you had me pegged, when we do screw up a day to three days do you go and start induction all over again or continue on the second phase where you were at when you fell off the wagon?
Bobofet241 2 years ago
Really depends on the why a person screwed up -- was it a failure to plan for a unique situation (like a restaurant where acceptability was in question) or was it due a cheat AND is that cheat back under control. If it is the second, then returning to Induction to ensure your eating is back under control might be advisable.
If it's the first scenario, do the due diligence to plan better and understand what you could have done differently, and keep going where you are at in the diet.

Thaks Kent.... Another great video. I really need to read the book cause even though I have been on this lifestyle change for almost 2 months now, Im sure there is a lot more that i do not know about it.....
kim36tv 2 years ago
I too keep hitting the book from time to time, and still find nuggets of wisdom to be mined. There is just so much good information in it. It is such a quick read through the Induction and OWL chapters, and really helps in setting the stage for long term success.

love this vid kent i wish more people could come around to this great way of eating i have never felt this good in my life and i owe it to atkins

Hey thanks for watching. I hope this prevents some people from using it as a fad and realize how good a long life of Low Carb can be. Congrats on being such a success story!
bowulf 2 years ago
Thanks Kent. I love your videos and find your insights always helpful. I'm one of those relatively new subscribers.
I've been low-carbing since Nov. 1, 2008 and have lost 72 pounds so far. I've never been this successful on a diet before and the reason for the success is just as you said; I'm not on a diet, I made a lifestyle change. Again thanks for the little pep talk. Looking forward to you next video.
sfpolarbear 2 years ago
That is fantastic progress for 7 months! It is once we realize how different our lives are now, and how easy it usually is to live that new life that our success becomes a matter of time. Good job, and thanks for watching.
The next video should be right around the corner.

This is a great video, I have adapted to an Atkin's style lifestyle, while it's not as rigid as the Atkin's starts out. I am avoiding carbs.
These are all great points and valid for any diet and why people quit them.
Take care and keep making great vids!
2ThousandAnd9 2 years ago
I agree a lot of these items are valid for whether it be Atkins or South Beach or even Low Fat. Anytime you don't make it long term changes or do into it half butt with only a smidge of knowledge, you are dooming yourself for ultimate failure.
Thanks for watching!

I went off because i dont have a schedule or appetite to eat 3 times a day.
And having sweet cravings is just too much.
And if you dont like cooking that much,
what do you eat...taco sald, chicken, salads, hamburgers etc....
I lost weight, but so hard for long term.
