This is the version heard in the 4 seasons movie, but the version you hear in Jeongseon Korea is different. It is the same attitude, similar sound, and meaning though; just a bit different. The movie version is very traditional sounding as can be and does indeed clearly mention, "Gangwondo," which is the Eastern rural province of Korea where the movie is set. After going there, it's not quite as rural as I had imagined coming from the midwestern USA. Beautiful green space though.
An english translation (from Wikipedia): I. Arirang Refrain: Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo, Arirang Pass is the long road you go. 1st Verse: If you leave and forsake me, my own, Ere three miles you go, lame you'll have grown. 2nd Verse: Wonderous time, happy time - let us delay; Till night is over,go not away. 3rd Verse: Arirang Mount is my Tear-Falling Hill, So seeking my love, I cannot stay still.
"Arirang" is arguably the most popular and best-known Korean folk song, both inside and outside Korea. Arirang is an ancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning. 'Ari' means "beautiful" (For example 아리따운 native Korean word means "beautiful", "lovely", "charming") 'Rang' can mean "dear". Because of those words, arirang could be interpreted to mean "beautiful dear"; however, this modern interpretation is unlikely to match the original (ancient) meaning.
I first saw the movie "Spring Summer Fall Winter and Spring" couple of years ago when I was in Seoul, Korea for a business trip. The movie was very simple but yet, the setting was exquisite and the movie was able to capture all the emotions and sends varying messages about consequences of human behaviors. I loved the song; it was very powerful when coupled with ending scenes. A great movie and Kim Young-Im is an awesome singer with a powerful voice. Thanks for uploading this song.
Yes, the movie "Bom Yureum..." was one of the slowest but most exciting movie I've ever seen if you know what I mean. There was no movie that held on to the core of my mind and squeezed it and then shook it like a some crazy fever while being ever so quiet.
This Arirang song from the Kangwondo region (northeastern South Korea) is featured in Spring Summer Fall Winter and Spring, one of the best movies by Korean director Kim Ki-Duk.
이때까지가 전성기였던듯... 최근 목소리는 음이 약간씩 떨어짐....

Remembering the start of the Korean War 60 years ago. A VERY passionate performance by Kim Young-im.
This was so effectively used in Ki-duk Kim's wonderful "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring".
I noticed there is a link to a clip of the film a bit further down. I urge you to click on it.
Also, bixlerscott here has some interesting things to say.
This is one of the most moving pieces of music, and I am not even Korean.

Excellent movie; slow but very good. Powerful message about the consequences of human behavior.

jeongseon arirange (the first song) is about the cruelty of the weather on farmers, missing one's love, and the difficulty of life as a farmer.
the second part - bae norae (boat song) is about the sea.. I don't know much more than that...

4th Verse:
The brightest of stars stud the sky so blue;
Deep in my bosom burns bitterest rue.
5th Verse:
Man's heart is like water streaming downhill;
Woman's heart is well water -- so deep and still.
6th Verse:
Young men's love is like pinecones seeming sound,
But when the wind blows, they fall to the ground.

7th Verse:
Birds in the morning sing simply to eat;
Birdes in the evening sing for love sweet.
8th Verse:
When man has attained to the age of a score,
The mind of a woman should be his love.
9th Verse:
The trees and the flowers will bloom for aye,
But the glories of youth will soon fade away.

This translation isn't really accurate and it's not for the "Jeongseon Arirang" which is the arirang performed here.
