  • what are the PROS/CONS?

  • tenfourfox with g5 dual 2.5 is nice thanks tenfourfox

  • -Where I play games.

    LIES!

  • Guess I'll keep my 09 MacMini for a little while longer.

  • Comment removed

  • and now a macbook pro is thinner than an ibook air xD

  • Obsolete doesn't mean useless, so yes, these G4 machines are utterly obsolete. Still a capable machine for light weight duties. You wouldn't want to edit a feature film on a G4 but a 10min YT vid is fine. I still have a G5 iMac that's quite happy.

  • tiger with system 9 support-->. much much better

  • Where did you get a lot of G4s

  • @F25VS He buys broken ones from eBay, repairs them completely, then re-sells them.

  • +14 months later my G4 still doing well... instead of an Ipad, im using a G4.

  • to be honest they' are obsolete time to move on they're just computers

  • Thanks! Now my MacBook Air with the 1.7Ghz i5 feels faster than before :D

  • i want that g4 can i buy it ?

  • N...no! Just go to fricken Intel Macs already! Irritates me how people just don't want to move to Intel. (Yes I know this video was posted in 2010).

  • I think that these machines would be a great netbook replacement, even today.

  • @hunkashoo Yes, its just as fast, and just as cheap! :D

  • @Techn0xReviews i kinda know that you guys know nothing about computers but compared to netbooks and ultrabooks these computers are slow really slow

  • obsolete?! you don't fucking say!

  • A P4 and even a P3 can still preform a users needs even today.

  • @TheEPROM9 True, maybe not a P3, but remember G4 was surpassed by Intel in 2007, I am talking about processor not Motherboards, Intel Motherboards beat these in 2004, but processors. So these are still capable machines. But I don't think we'll be alive for when Intel surpassed G7s.

    G7s have:

    256 cores

    16 GB DDR3 per core

    4.25Ghz

motherboards usually have 1/2/4 processor slots. But these are out this world expensive, but if IBM wants they can revive G5s by updating Motherboards.

  • @TheEPROM9 It always depends on what you do, my friend.

  • I want one, where can I get one from you or some other place?

  • You have impressed me, sir. Well done.

  • any pc that can't play youtube videos is obselete...

  • @retromelon123 You're retarded. He said it was Adobe's fault. Go listen shit.

  • Thanks for helping me make a decision, great stuff.

  • LOL at 00:36 there is a folder named 'cat' on his desktop XDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • That test could have been easier if you used a PowerMac G4 MDD 1.42 GHz with 2GB if RAM.

  • Usually G4's dont even have 1gb of ram....

  • im so angry that my iMac G5 died

  • @metalopolis1 Guess what I'm using right now... :-)

  • @T0XiiCIVIAGICZ Im guessing the wonderful piece of art that is a G5

  • will any agp video card from a windows intel pc work in a mac g4? I notice the agp slot has a little extra slot behind it. What is that extra slot?

  • You play the right games!! StarCraft and StarCraft II best games ever. Not that kind off cod crap!

  • I have an 2011 intel mac and I agree with you, although this Mac is quicker, my G4 1.42GHz Mac Mini could do everything I wanted and more!

  • Comment removed

  • Where did you get the usb nes controller?

  • i have the same telephone as you

  • I didn't expect to see some starcraft! :D woop woop, ill subscribe now

  • this video made me buy an iBook g4 it's the best

  • VERY NICE VIDEO!!! thank you so much i"m getting one powerbook from my friend for $100,dollars

  • thank you so much for this video, it is so helpful, when I save up enough money, i'm going to have to buy a Ibook G4 from your website, do you ship to the UK?

  • G4s are more reliable than even G5s. G5s were a bust.

  • I still have an old iBook G4 that chugs along just perfectly. I treat it like one would treat a netbook with some browsing here and there with email. It still has great battery life, and even when it dies I doubt I'd have the heart to throw it away, I've had it for so long and it's just been absolutely reliable machine.

  • 800Mz, oh god why

  • DUDE OPEN OFFICE YOU SAY!!! MY DAD MADE THAT PROGRAM! SWEAR TO GOD! HE HAD TO GET IT PATTENED AND EVERYTHING!

  • nice video, !!!

  • Can the iBooks run iMovie?

  • @vardamanjsutin Yes, they've had iMovie for years.

  • You are awesome

  • Do a week with a 68k Mac.

  • Comment removed

  • do a video of a week with g3s

  • I wish i had shelves full of apple laptops :D

  • i encouraged my mum to get a g4 ibook, and it works great for her. the only thing is with flash and iplayer. the ram is maxxed out and its quite a high spec model cpu speed, are there any ways to get bbc iplayer clips running smoothly?

  • My friend has a iBook G4 that has a 800MHz processor, he said it works fine. His main computer is a HP laptop with a core i5 processor. I myself would like to own a G4!!

  • @wheely132 G4s in some ways are even better than G5 Macs. (not the powermac g5 though) The iMac G5s were unreliable. We got about 4 of them when they came out, and we had many problems with them. We only have two left that are working fine. G4 computers, and even G3 computers are SO reliable.

  • @maccollectorZ Oh that's cool! Would you happen to know what made the G5 so unreliable? I been keeping a lookout on a G4. I wanna get one when I have some extra money to spend.

  • @wheely132 Well, all I know is that it was a whole different design. They smashed their computer into a thin case, and they probably rushed to get it out on the market. It was poorly built, and had technical difficulties. It's not THAT bad, I still have one today, but the problems It can have are not small. Otherwise, that's all I know. It was really the iMacs that had the problems. I will try to think of other problems with it, and why.

  • @wheely132 Oh yeah, there was a G5 model of iMac that was recalled for having power supply issues. One of ours died from that actually.

  • @adric22 how much do you usually sell the g4s for?

  • I just got a reburbished iBook G4 1.33Ghz with 512MB of RAM and 40GB HDD for $100.

  • Commented with Classilla with my Sawtooth G4... I wish i could get a faster procesr for her... im still in love lol

  • Im looking for an external HD for my mac, any recommendations?

  • @Tech4theWin The MyBook external HD is a good one. Check it out. :) It will work well with your Mac.

  • Thanks for the review/experiment. And you're right, Flash does SUCK!!!

  • @CoolStuffZone It's soooo true. Flash does suck.

  • Well said. I grew tired of falling into the myth of always needing the newest and more powerful models. My 2010 macbook air has more power than I need, and there is no reason to update for years to come.

But if you have an iphone 4, g4 is no good.

  • You have lot of Macs. I want them!!!!!!! Just Kidding.

  • My iBook G4 PPC does everything......if you think it won't you are wrong. The programs you need are all on the net for free if you just look. Handbrake and MacTubes are just two I'll mention. It's not hella fast, I'll give you that, but it WILL do everything. =0)

  • I want an iBook g4 with leopard. How much is that average price? I have a Mini G4(first mac) that im trying to put leopard on but it's giving me hell.

  • @ShinyAndTouchable if you can, try and get an intel mac, the price difference is worth it

  • @muffincheesepie How much more? Im a poor college student as it is so I'm lucky to have the pc laptop and mac mini that I do have. But I am seriously thinking of getting something of better quality.

  • @ShinyAndTouchable if you really need a mac, you can get a refurbished white macbook from apple kinda cheap, you could also hackintosh, and since i posted my last comment, installed ubuntu on my school laptop, and it's a very similar experience, i would now recommend getting a dirt cheap laptop with no operating system installed and installing ubuntu 11.10

  • @muffincheesepie Nah. Get one of these. I am using Oneiric too, but I don't like the non Long Term Ubuntu, I get stuck in these fucking normal versions. I mean it works fine, but it's just slower. Remember Lucid, and Precise are like the XP and 7 of Windows.

  • @ShinyAndTouchable Some of those old machines can only go to Tiger, but some iBook G4s an iMac G4s that have better specs, are able to go to leopard. That mini you have probably has too little specs to have run Leopard. Install Tiger on it.

  • @maccollectorZ I got leopard on it fine. I was having trouble burning the Leopard iso into an image. I decided not to get a G4 laptop because they don't run flash. And I like using chrome and spotify which neither work on G4s because they are only power pc and those applications require intel. So I will just look for the cheapest intel mac laptop I can.

  • @ShinyAndTouchable Cheapest intel Mac? I would get the 2006 MacBook. (not macbook pro) You can get MacBooks for about $400 dollars. (less or more) I realized that even though it's from 2006, it performs nicely. It's almost like an iBook G4... Though it's older, it still preforms nicely. MacBooks have pretty good specs too. In fact, my brother uses one that someone gave me, and I use it sometimes, and it's pretty good. Check it out and let me know what you think. :)

  • How do u get youview

  • I've been torn betweet a Dell Laptop with Windows 7, and this. And now I've offically made my decision. :D

  • @Technifyd people who use dell on my school (CGI and game-art) have got lots of problems with both hardware and software. just buy a mac ;)

  • @Technifyd Powerbook, I hope.

  • @Technifyd At least get a core 2 duo computer. g4's cant do much anymore. especially since they arent even intel processors.

  • @dalynthesk8r What are you talking about. G4s are still the bomb, just no Intel software. But most companies still have PPC versions. Trust me.

  • @Justinba1010 is there JRE SE 1.7_03 beta?

  • @misternumberuno What?

  • ..yea u should give me one of those to take off your hands.. lol

  • Until u showed the date I was about to trade my iPhone 4 32gig for this

  • Two weeks ago my PC broke down, and I had to bring it back to the shop. I had to use my old Mac Mini G4, with "Tiger" and as second OS I'm using MorphOS 2.7. That is an incredibly fast system on a G4! Booting in a coupüle of seconds, and the Mac Mini is completely noiseless. The only trouble is, that the old Mac Mini G4 1,25 GHz has only 32 Mb videoram. But nevertheless: The PC is still waiting for me, I've continued using the Mac Mini again.

  • @adric22 hi i was looking on craigslist the other day and found a powerbook G4 for a cheap cost would you reccomenned getting it? also, does it have wireless wifi? if you could answer this i would be really happy thanks, happyflaapy

  • Great video! Nothing wrong with older macs. My Dad uses an old iMac G3 to learn about computers on....with no big investment. I am running a Powermac G5 and works great for most everything...music recording with MIDI instruments, graphics, video, etc.

Gaming? Not so good, but who cares. If you're a gamer, you probably already have a 360 or PS3 anyways.

  • Powerbook g4's are the worst machines to work on. Especially the 12". Only thing I left running in a G4 is my Xserve dual 1.33 with about 8TB for file server and web server. Plenty fast for that.

  • Is this a 64-bit? I wants to play minecraft!

  • @rustysink22 I doubt that can play Minecraft. Minecraft even lags on my friend's 3GHZ Windows computer. (which tells you that Macs run games better than Windows computers. A Mac with a lower processor speed than a Windows computer, can run a game better than the Windows computer. People say that Windows computers are better because Macs can't play games, but the truth is that more games are made for Windows computers, but that doesn't mean that Macs are unable to play them well)

  • I'd say they are obsolete to a high end user, but they arent junk from what i can see here, they work nicely, they just dont have all the things pcs are good for, like he said, wider screen (you dont have to crouch every single time in front of your computer), better specs, adaptability, etc

Mac stuff is always for people who know what they want/need

  • i'm happy with my MacBook Pro but i wouldn't really care to have one of those.

  • Interesting VIdeo. Infact, I purchased an 800mhz processor IBOOK G4 and have been using it for the last couple of days, running tiger. I purchased it to get started with apple and suprisingly it is fast for what it is. I don't have alot of money and this machine was $50.00 which is why I picked it up. I would however be interested and would consider purchasing a higher end machine (such as the one displayed in this video /higher specs) If you have anything please email me at nkokmsn2@msn.com

  • donde puedo conseguir una memoria ram para mi lapto ibook model a1005 porfabor ya la he buscado y no la encuetro

  • Comment removed

  • i dont see the point in using such a slow, and old computer

  • Will my houses wi-fi work? I use it to watch youtube on my ipod 4.

  • I'm thinking about getting one of these. Do you think that they are now obsolete pieces of junk? also how much did you get that for? Great video by the way ;)

  • Hey man, I watch your videos a lot and I'm purchasing a iBook G4 from eBay for about $219 including the $30 shipping, can you make a video on upgrading from Tiger to Leopard? It would help out a lot, thanks.

  • @rawr upgrading from tiger to leopard is easy. do you have the installation disc?

  • @trunks2861 Nope, I bought this iBook from eBay, it came without iLife, there's no movie editing software, garageband or anything which made me kinda mad, I was seeing if there was some way I could torrent Leopard and install from burned disc. :p

  • i love your videos

  • Moral of story : computers of today are powerful enough. The time where there was a huge difference between a 4mhz 8 bit computer and a 16 mhz computer are over. The only difference and things I notice when upgrading these days are : games. I have a 1GHZ Sempron at work. It does everything I need. My CoreI7 here does the same things.

  • what type of ilife do i use?

    like what year?

  • what type of ilife do i use?

    like what year?

  • how do you check how much memory you have left ?

    not ram

but like memory to download files and stuff?

i am a mac virgin lol

  • I'm thinking about buying a G4 Powerbook cause they can be had for so cheap. It just sucks that Apple has dumped support for them software wise.

  • I dont really agree that the G4 is obsolete. You dont get to run the modern software and it is sluggish when you do some modern games like minecraft. But, you can pop in SSD's (to make it faster) and still run older software to have it running for anything for something like my dad does or what adric22 does. I would take an iBook G4 or a powerbook G4 to school over my macbook pro.

  • no dude i love the g4 its not junk

  • Unfortunately Apple and Adobe (Flash) have abandoned perfectly good computers that are not as old as XP and xp is still supported on 10 year old pcs if you can find any. There are still lots of G3, G4, and G5's in use why should they be abandoned?

  • Nice video. I use a 12" iBook G4 1.33GHz system w/1.5GB RAM on a daily basis and aside from some slugishness on YouTube it's been great. Very reliable and versatile.

  • I think this is a fantastic video as I love to see continued support by the Apple community for PPC Macs.

My only suggestion is that now TenFourFox is arguably the best browser for PPC Macs and far surpasses Camino - but other than that, great video. :)

  • I purchased a used iBook G4 five years ago for 300.00 I held onto it, used it heavily for the next 6 months, turned around and sold it on ebay for 450.00 These things hold onto their value.

  • I dig your vids very much. In fact, they inspired me to get 2 PowerBook G4 12" computers, both for my parents. However, I am having great difficulty playing YouTube (essential) on both of them. One is 1.33ghz 768mb running Tiger, and the other is 1.5ghz 1.25gb running Leopard. I have tried different versions of Camino, different versions of Firefox and different versions of Flash. I have also tried MacTube and YouView, nothing works!! The closest thing to OK is watching in 240p. Any suggestions?

  • @trunks2861 - I have found that sometimes plugging into ethernet instead of wireless will help.

  • @trunks2861 it's your graphics cards. they probably have a basic graphics card like a 933 mhz g4 i've used with a geforce 2mx card. if it were a desktop you could upgrade to a 9700 pro radeon card. with laptops it's not plausible to upgrade nor really possible.

  • @KingofComputing I don;t know much about graphics cards. Here are the specs

GeForce FX Go5200: Chipset Model: GeForce FX Go5200 Type: Display Bus: AGP VRAM (Total): 64 MB Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de) Device ID: 0x0329 Revision ID: 0x00a3 ROM Revision: 2086

    thanks

  • @trunks2861 YouView, man

  • @techguy985 thanks for your suggestion but I tried it already. My 1.5ghz 1.25gb leopard system (which I just got rid of) would play 240p well. The 1.33 768 tiger system crashes anytime I tried opening youtube. I think it might be the ram....

  • @trunks2861 YouTube has a HTML5 Version, try that! It's great!!

  • @BenAirVirtual trying it out, thanks.

  • @trunks2861 Those machines should have no problem with Youview or mactubes. Something is wrong. My ibook 1.2 ghz (Tiger) G4 handles 480p no problem with mactubes. Make sure Quicktime is selected as the player in mactubes. There are also Greasemonkey scripts (viewtube) that can replace flash with quicktime for many sites, and extension for tenfourfox that will do the same. Check out tenfourfox development blog for more details>

  • @imixmuan hey thanks a bunch. I think the Quicktime setting in mactube is helping out.

  • @imixmuan and how can i find these greasemonkey scripts? I found something but it seems to be pc only

  • @trunks2861 Go to macrumors (dot com), the PowerPC forum. Look for a thread entitled Simple scripts to stream video to VLC and Coreplayer.Ignore the first few posts, those work, but what you want is half way down the first page Greasemonkey works in firefox or tenfourfox. To install them in Safari or Omniweb or icab you will need greasekit, search google for how to install that ( you also need to install a SIMBL file in your library-its not hard). Give it a try!

  • @trunks2861 Download the latest MacTubes, go in MacTubes prefs and select Quicktime as the default player. That way you can watch 360p in full screen on even the lowest G4. Bet you can at least watch 420p.

  • @vincentlm77 thanks

  • Great vid, subbed!

  • I Must confess my G4 computers and old software are getting the better of me.

My version of Camino has given up playing flash content.

I tried resetting Camino to no effect.

Can you provide a link to the PPC version please and I will forgo all the lost favourites and bookmarks and start again.

I suffer from Multiple Sclerosis so my thinking power is diminished

Also can you tell me which specific version of Sketchup you use works on PPC computers ?

  • How much do u normally sell these for?

  • i would like to rebuild my G4 with an intel processor, new hard drive, and new logic board. why? because I like the design and functionality way better than the pieces of doo-doo out there today. how should i go about this, if this is actually possible? i already have a new internal ac power, new keyboard, new battery, and new ac power cord, superdrive is in good shape, not sure about the heat sensor and sink though.

  • Hi David, I like the shelf/rack setup you got there, is there a name for it?

  • Wow, it's amazing how with a super old outdated computer you can still do stuff up to Final Cut Pro. Makes me feel better about my second mac possibly being a PowerBook G4.

  • Wow does your school really just let you have all those MacBooks laying around your house like that? That would be like the awesomest thing ever I think.

  • @NicksLocker - School? I run a business selling macs... I don't go to a school.

  • @adric22 yeah LOL

  • @adric22 Oh sorry I must have heard something... That still sounds really awesome, being surrounded by MacBooks and iBooks, it would be like the most awesomest thing ever for me.

  • @NicksLocker School? WTF? He runs a business dipshit.

  • I dropped my Intel Sony NoteBook in favor of a 733mhz PowerMac G4 Quicksilver. Months later I was given a 12" iBook G4 at 1.33ghz with 1.5 gigs of RAM and I used that for almost a year before getting a 15" PowerBook G4 at 1.5ghz with 1.5 gigs of RAM as an early christmas present. This computer is in no way obsolete. In fact, it plays 360p YouTube videos without stuttering.

  • I bought my husband an ibook G4 for Christmas (we are a little financially challenged hehe) and this video makes me feel a LOT better about the decision!

  • where did you get the classic nintendo usb controller?

  • great video, ill never relinquish my Dual 1.25 Ghz PowerPC G4 MDD

  • i have the same webcam!!!

  • Hey quick question! Does this also include the powermac g4 quicksilver??

  • @Drum18Winh Personally I think it does. I used mine for a long time even when I had a plenty powerful Sony notebook. The G4 QuickSilver is a great machine.

  • can it run Rome total war?.

  • Use the very same machine every day, only difference is that I have a 120 gb. HD. in it ! Have never had a bit of trouble with this laptop in the 5 years that I've owned it.

  • should i run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard??

  • i have a friend that wants to sell one for 300 is it worth it?

  • your the coolest dude ever

    thanks brahh

  • hey could you make a video on how to install mac os x 10.5 on a G4

  • This guy is showing us that older computers are about as good as any other computer you could get today.

  • @FobbysareBorange it is actually better than any computer today. by far.

  • You can live also with a Pentium processor and acient software.

    It's just a total molasses pain :)

  • I have a g4 mdd and it is my main computer i love it it even runs faster than my hp envy laptop

  • Can you tell me what is the last version of Final Cut that works with a PowerPC G5

  • @nicgeorge07 That would be Final Cut Studio 5. That was the last version of FCS that was supported on the PowerPC . FCS 7 required an Intel Core Duo CPU and the new FCP X requires an Intel Core 2 Duo.

  • @intelcore2duo43 1000 Thank You's

  • 15,999 VIEWER WOO!

  • Very nice video, i was considering the idea of buying an used Power mac, but well i'd need a laptop the same... how much are you selling them? if they are on sale :)
