I got this DVD and I thought he was amazing in it. If you loved him on NMTB, bear in mind it is very different, much more insightful and vulnerable. I'm not saying you won't like it, cos I love both, just bear it in mind.
not so good, the little bit i saw. more of an insight into his mind, rather than his (normally v good) 'sarcy putdown' style from buzzcocks. & the worse for it really, cos the insights weren't particularly insightful & the style was more than a bit preachy
sure he'll get better though, cos he's basically quite talented. just a bit of a content failure this one
Wow, I can't believe I've only just seen this and it's been out over a year. It slipped under the radar.
Any funny person can do observational comedy or tell jokes for an hour, and that's great, it's entertaining, a good night out, money well spent. But what Amstell is doing here is equivalent to the first noticable steps of the stand-up greats who bare their souls on stage and leave you with little moments or insights you'll recall and treasure for the rest of your life.
He is seriously good at stand up, especially for a first timer, and he has a unique and refreshing personality on stage. I hope he has a genuine go at making a career from it because by far the worst thing you can say about the DVD is that it's too damn short!
I bought this DVD because I enjoy his work on nmtb and the sitcom. I did laugh a lot but at the end I found myself feeling lonely and I thought a lot. This is a good show and I love it.
Simon is delightful. He also gives his audience the benefit of the doubt that we are as intelligent and sensitive as he is. That's quite a compliment he pays us.
@fjdksla243 it would work either way. if it's 'can't', then he's saying people won't allow it to just be fun. if he's saying 'can' then he's saying that people should realize that sex can just be fun. Same joke either way. very subtle difference.
@raychella08 i get how it could be either way, but once the joke continues to imply that just having sex isn't seen as like playing tennis because sex is always implied as 'leading somewhere', it makes me feel as though it would make more sense as 'can't'
saw it live, he's excellent really, it is that bitter honesty that IS so funny, if you don't like it then fine, people find humour in different things, doesnt mean he's NOT funny. comedy is, like most art forms-subjective and personal
@66awhFUDGE66 True, the comedic value is only increased more if you feel you can relate to what is said. In this case, he simply states his values and personal experiences in a humorous manner. It's not as funny if you don't agree with him, but, it is frickin hilarious if you do.
I think he is right, it isn't good enough. His stand up has never really been that funny...nor was his Grandma's House either...should go back to presenting.
@Electroguy1 Actually Jimmy carr is one of the most brilliant gag writers in the UK if not THE best. He is the only comedian in Britain to dare to do a routine where the material speaks for itself. He delivers dead pan and does so in a way that rivals Stephen wright. He is a craftsman. The downside is, he has no integrity and will take any job that is plopped in front of him,
Is he a gay?

This looks brilliant but I still think he's at his best going toe to toe with celebrities and crushing them on Buzzcocks :D
