As an A&P mechanic I worked on them for ten+ yrs here in San Antonio. It was love/hate. I loved the look of them & going out on engine runs. It was awesome hearing & feeling the power of all 4 engines at full power standing outside just under the nose gear! Best time with a UPS DC-8 was going on a test flight. Worst was one of my co-workers getting crushed to death by a thrust reverser inside a UPS airplane eng in the main hangar & during 9/11 attacks I was working on the #2 eng of a UPS DC-8.
I can imagine how those guys felt. Like the one guy said, it's like an old friend. You take care of it, and it will take care of you! Nice, yet emotional video. I have always liked the DC-8 jet, and I will miss it too just as they will.
What a wonderful job it must have been to fly the mighty stretch, or any 8! Best wishes to the crews that flew them for UPS! Nice work!, you will be sorely missed overhead and making short finals into EWR!
Sad to see. Gone are the days of watching aircraft and hearing loud jet noise as a favorite pastime. Everything looks like a form of 737 and boring to watch over time. Thanks for the great video!! I miss them all. DC-8, 9, 10, 707, 727 UGH!!! sad.
It is sad to see UPS retire their DC-8 fleet. It was also sad to see UPS retire their 747 classic fleet. But the most disaponting thing UPS ever did was cancel their A380F order.
The Diesel Eight is a strong airplane, built like a brick shithouse. To be sure, some new freight dog operators will kick start their operations with some of these reliable CFM powered machines, especially the -73s.
NO! Why the DC-8? That jet is like family! You can't kill off family! I can't believe this...A pilot's best friend, an engineer's brainchild and a cargo carriers' workhorse. I want to seriously buy one and fly it. Poor things...
@fraroc yeah but these planes are ancient. It'd be like if UPS still operated 707s, not that they ever did, these planes are the same age. DC-8s were 707's competitor. Most carriers wold-wide have retired the 707s long ago. This is just over-due as the DC-8 was released in the same decade. Not this model, no this is a longer version and is newer. Built in the very early 70s, maybe even late 60s can't remember when the stretched model came out.
@d0rkiishchris You are right, but the reason they stayed in service longer than the 707 was the fact that the Dc-8 was built a lot stronger, just like the other Douglas aircraft
Oh My God. I cant believe it. When i first started with delta my first 2 years i flew this. I am so sad. I cant believe it. First the L1011 now the DC-8. I hope the MD-11 and DC-10 Dont come in line. Very good plane and i will certainly miss it.
The DC8 was the first turbojet aircraft I ever flew. The plane was powerd by turbojets, but had systems similar to the DC7 by design. The transition to jet systems wasn't quite complete yet unti lthe DC9. This plane was built more like a piece of construction equipment than an airplane. It was tough and reliable evident by it's service life. This plane is a workhorse that has yet to be equalled or surpassed. I just assumed this plane would be around forever. Goodbye old friend!
I work in Ontario, Ca Ramp (ONT), I tow all UPS aircrafts and I love towing those DC-8's, good work horse aircrafts. I have always teased all my co workers that those planes are older than them! (as old as I am, dare I not to say). It is sad to see them go. Airstart was the main reason why we have them on all airports because of DC-8's, now we use them on all aircrafts upon request from pilots. I love the sound of those engines taking off, I always knew it was DC-8 taking off. Peace Out!
Those DC-8s look like they're able to fly for another 40 years!

Lost my job in ONT as a result of UPS getting rid of the 8's. Is there a recession proof job?
