  • Such poignant closing remarks, and Mr. Newman delivers them so eloquently hitting the right tone. Pleasure to watch his professionalism!

  • Over the years I've seen this movie on video shelves in video stores for rent,on store shelves in walmart for sale,it didn't look like a movie I'd care to see. Then I finally saw it from netflix and I couldn't believe how good it was.I think when you get older your tastes in movies you want to see changes. For a long time I'd never thought I want to see a woody allen movie, now I enjoy them.

  • 1:47 - oh look, its Bruce Willis.

  • @RichardElden

Thanks for confirming to me and everyone else what a brain dead piece of human refuse you clearly are. Now go back to your Steven Segal films if they're not too intellectually challenging for you.

  • @Beliasarius Are you everyone else? Thank you so much for your brightness!!

  • @RichardElden

Yes, any film that has more than 2 minutes dialogue must really overload your attention span. The CGI effects-laden trash coming out of Hollywood these days is made for lobotomised morons like you. Watch 'Idiocracy' and see your future!

  • One of rhe best film in history. That is for sure.

  • Newman, Mason, Warden - three of my favorite actors. Galvin's alcoholism is well portrayed, thanks for the upload

  • A lesser actor doesn't trust the material. A lesser actor shouts this and overacts. Instead, in typically brilliant fashion, Newman finds the perfect pitch the material demands. He trusts the audience to pick up on the beats and emotion of the scene without having to beat us over the head. Bravo, sir. Thank you.

  • @BillF1967 So True!!

  • Great movie and one of the all time great actors, thanks for the memories Paul RIP

  • What a wonderful film, a wonderful character portrayed by a wonderful man, Paul Newman! So sad that he passed ad that he was sick, but now his suffering has ended. Beautiful work for this film on the part of Paul Newman!

  • Sir Juan! You are the Anti-Christ

  • i didnt agree with newmans politics, though i admit he was a great actor and cared deeply for sick kids and i respect him for that.

  • He got screwed out the best actor award that year, but the academy gave it to him a few years later as a way to say so sorry.

  • First and foremost: Paul Newman gave the best performance of his career in this excellent courtroom drama; the film critics were unanimous in saying so. As for the hate messages under the comments, just ignore them. People who are haters are unsuccessful in life and they can only spew their jealousy and insecurity on those who have achieved something meaningful. Don't pay them any attention: they'll all die soon!

  • Justice rules:)

  • Just to show how brilliant an actor this guy was, if you get the chance watch this movie again and notice at the first court scene there is a lot of "clicking" coming from Newmans mouth when he speaks. That`s because his mouth was dry. When people get nervous, or are scared, fearful, their mouth gets dry. That`s a fact. I mean who the hell puts that tiny little detail into an acting performance? Newman did. That`s how good that guy was when it came to acting.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain Newman was an average actor and this was a slow and boring film. He was a bisexual alcoholic in real life.

  • This movie was so freakin` good, just saw it. I had tears in my eyes watching this. My god Newman is the greatest actor who ever lived.

  • i love it..

  • The verdict is my prayer. Knowing Clint eastwood ,called as he is just. To help the children.

  • hey at 3:00 isnt that bruce willis behind the guy on the left? :S :S

  • @scaharzobaz yes

  • @scaharzobaz Yes he is! and his side is Tobin Bell (of Saw) hehehe, but he was only an extra. hehe

  • One of the best films, ever made. "The Veredict". Thank you Paul Newman .

  • Juan:Why not change your name to Asshole?

  • JuanMcScumbag-a real original....

  • @JuanMacready Why did he blow you out luv lol

  • Newman blew tons of guys.

  • @JuanMacready you're asshole. you know that's what you are

  • @frank47hammer I'm sorry. I meant you're an asshole. Left out that article.

  • @JuanMacready

He also raised tens of millions of charity-- and ran a summer camp for children with cancer. Have you EVER done anything of significance? Anything? Please feel free to respond.

  • @stargell777 I'm glad he died of lung cancer, pity it didn't happen a lot sooner.

  • @JuanMacready and he would have wished you lived a long and fulfilling life, free from poverty and suffering as his tireless lifelong work for charitable causes attests. but so it goes the world is just filled with interesting and diverse folk i suppose.

  • Paul Newman was so awesome in Road to Perdition

  • Is the scene where he punches Charlotte Rampling on youtube?

  • I liked James Mason's speech to Charlotte Rampling as well.

  • Paul Newman is what many actors wanna be like, but they fail at it badly.

  • Paul Newman was the best of all and he was a very good man too. We 'll ever remember you.

  • Paul Newman was correct ...life really is a matter of luck right from the moment of conception because if you don't win that race...."you" don't have a life! But "maybe" and it is not quaranteed, someone else does! Its all just a matter of luck! We are all lucky even those most afflicted! Many call them the unlucky but are they?

  • I like the early scene in the judge's chamber where he says.' I heard about you. That you're a defendent's judge, a hard-ass...I know you. I knew you when you were a bag boy for the boys downtown. You couldn't make it as a lawyer! They did you a favor by putting you on the bench.'

  • I agree - great scene with Newman at his best!

  • Bruce Willis is the guy wearing the gray suit and black and gold tie on the right side of the screen when they zoom in on Paul Newman.

  • Paul Newman was totaly better than James Mason was

  • The telephone scene wher Rampling is calling and calling and he has the strength no to answer the phone! - this is strength more men should have.

  • The courtroom version of Rocky!

  • He went to Harvard law school (so obviously excelled at High School). He then edited the Harvard Law Review, and then finished second in his class - at Harvard, remember). He then goes on to get hired by one of Boston's top law firms and marries the daughter of the senior partner.

It only goes wrong for Galvin AFTER he has tasted success.

  • I expected that answer from a ignorant man like yourself!

  • HenryCorbetson, how dare you say such a thing. Do we have to go over that all over again? I mean seriously, stop bandwagon that quote and watch this film. Newman and brando two completely different people with different style of acting.

  • Bruce Willis - three rows back to the right?

  • Yes it is, but he was uncredited I think, u can check it out on imdb.

  • Yeah! Contact your local FBI office and let them know you like to download movies for free and not pay for them. They're sure to help you out!

  • Comment removed

  • No need to get pissy with me. YOU were the one who originally asked in a public comment section where you could "download this movie for free", which oddly enough you removed only after I posted what I did. Now you're telling ME to shut up. NOW you're saying you don't need to "download" movies, though that's what you originally asked to do. As for your discounts, what does that have to do with anything?! Buy movies, don't download, end of story. Oh, and your "shut up" response is SO very mature!

  • I believe the ending of this movie is very powerful and symbolic. You hear the phone ringing as Paul Newman's old girlfriend calls him and hes now the one drinking the coffee, and she is now the alcoholic, classic...

  • This wonderful actor was screwed out of so many deserving Oscars, this fantastic movie was just another example (he got it for The Color of Money but I feel the Academy decided they blew it too many times). But in the end, did it matter? All that matters was he was the epitome of what Hollywood/fame/etc. should be about rather than what it really is. He was truly a class act, his kind will not pass this way again.

  • This is one of my favorite movies. So much to love about it!

Paul Newman won the Academy Award for "Color of Money" but as far as I'm concerned he got it for "The Verdict."

  • One of my favorite films.

  • Yes, It's Bruce Willis there.

  • Slow, dreary and boring movie.

  • Isn't Bruce WIllis in the background?

  • The scene I described in my previous post is in YouTube under "The Verdict Hospital Scene" Paul Newman's last line in that scene....."I'm her attorney".....is classic.. He deserved the Oscar.

  • One of my favorite scenes is when Paul goes to the hospital ward to take photos of his comatose client to use during the settlement negotiations; while he's taking the photos he has an epiphany. He doesn't say anything but the look on his face shows that he doesn't want to settle out of court,,he starts to understand the injustice of settling out of court; a nurse comes and says "you can't be in here" He pauses, gets choked up and says "I'm her lawyer"..Love that scene!!!

  • The more you watch this movie, the more you will like it. I can watch this movie over and over again. Watch how Paul Newman's character transforms slowly throughout the movie, watch his tone, his body language, etc. He is amazing. Today I went to the bar where the bar scenes were filmed. It's at the corner of E. 7th and Ave. B in NYC..Still looks the same inside. A photo take of Paul during filming is on the wall.

  • love this film

  • I think for the longest time Sidney Lumet was regarded as a goo director with an impressive body of work. The truth is he's a GREAT director with an outstanding body of work. This is an absolutely FLAWLESS movie.

  • Christopher Lee is totaly better than Paul Newman was

  • i recently saw this for the first time and it is one of my favorite films. amazing. This is such a great scene

  • Great summation to a great movie. In the pursuit of justice, his character redeems himself, while the one with all the connections, who takes the expedient route, comes to ruin. Once in a while Hollywood comes out with a redemptive film worth seeing.

  • Well said :-)

  • If you look carefuly, you can see Bruce Willis. Just behind the woman with the black jacket and the man with the red tie. 1:54

  • damn!! jack warden acted in some great courtroom movies including the verdict, and jusice for all and 12 angry men.

  • seriously. weird trend, but he's the king of these movies.

  • i hope there's justice in our hearts ,especially justice for the people of south korea, that kim jong ill would pay for the crimes he has committed against his people

  • This always frustrates me. I want them to cut into newman and they don't for a very long time.

This performance is his greatest achievement as an actor by far.

  • By far? Not even close.

You need to see more of his films

  • I agree, seriously. Though this is ONE of the best films he's ever acted in. There are tons that are better and he plays a much more superior role and plays it much better...

I love this speech though, excellent.

  • Yeah, I think he has the best film record over anyone else.

    What'd you think of "Harper?"

  • thanx but ive seen every film he's ever made, but if you were smarter than you seem to be you would know that its a matter of personal opinion.

  • You're not so bright.

Apart from the sniveling insult you gave,

saying it's his best "BY FAR" is truly ignorant. He's had so many great performances and none of them proove "By FAR"

His body of work, is a big part of what makes him so good.

And cliche to pick a momologue in a courtroom.

    Wake up.

  • love him

  • Not only has the world lost a great actor but a truly great humanitarian also.

  • it was actually 1982.

he will be deeply missed forever.

  • he will be missed

  • Brilliantly written, brilliantly delivered speech. Especially 0:28 does it for me right now.

  • Great words. Great film. Great actor. Great man.

  • I doubt it is regarded as his best, but this is my favorite Paul Newman film. Whenever I come across it on television, I can't help but get sucked in.

  • nozup4u it was one of his best the thing was "Gandi " with Ben Kinsley beat him out that year.

  • This was his best role! Just amazing! So real! So heartfelt. So real!

  • What a great loss, he was an amazing person.

  • So much of the time, we're just lost.

  • This is my fav Paul Newman movie. His best performance. When he decks Charlotte Rampling... Wow!

  • Thanks for this and many other great perfomances, Mr Newman.

    A true gentleman.

  • Perhaps his best performance. Bravo.

  • Such a devastating loss to the world that cannot be replaced. A gentleman, superb actor, and a tremendous humanitarian, Paul Newman embodied not only what men want to be, and what women want, but what hard work, decency, humility, and kindness can acheive. A class act that will surely be missed. Thank you Paul. Also, if you look in the back row, while the camera zooms in, you'll find a young unknown actor, at the time, named Bruce Willis, who was working as an extra on the film.

  • One of those rare times when the performance comes thru real enough to make me almost believe that even under the most insurmountable odds, there is always some kind of hope.

  • "You know, so much of the time we're just lost." 'nough said.

  • RIP Paul.

  • you will be missed dear friend

  • R.I.P.

  • such a beautiful voice!

  • GRANDE PAUL!!GRAZIE!

  • One of his greatest performances as an actor. RIP Paul Newman, you will be missed...

  • One of the great monologue deliveries ever. impeccable timing, total perfection

  • RIP Paul. Greatest American actor of the last century, and this role, his finest, in my opinion.

  • one of the most understated films of all time. top performances from newman, mason, rampling, o'shea and warden

  • it sucks how a great movie like this goes, pretty much, overlooked. one of paul newman's best performances and sidney lumet's best movie. in my opinion.

  • The Verdict was an OUTSTANDING movie. Certainly the best legal drama I've ever seen.

  • You could not be more right. The film was as good as any I've ever seen and as far legal dramas go has no parallels.

  • great... i don't know the context, and actually it doesn't matter... anyway everyone should remember this (-:
