Its up to the other runners to run a fast race to get rid of a sprinter at the end if they cannot do that then the sprinter is in his rights to just tuck into the pack and wait Yifter could have probably paced from the front and still won! people here talking of leaching do not know anything on competitive racing
@ilikesex67 people like u make me sick! Go n read the biography of Yifter, he is a great athlete! And too bad Virgin made himself get leached..stop crying like a baby insulting a nation because of a 5000m race!
I admire Craig Virgin, but he did not push his mid-race spurt long enough. A good example is the 1988 5k Olympic final, where John Ngugi won by basically throwing in a sub-2:00 800 in the early going and held on. Ngugi was a runner like Virgin: a super x-c racer, but lacking the kick needed to win in the final 400. The same strategy worked for Joan Benoit in the 1984 Olympic marathon.
@ilikesex67 Pathetic? A runner is well within his or her right to choose whatever tactic is necessary, so long as such tactics do not obstruct other runners/ violate IAAF rules. Don't like it? Too bad. Go Yifter!
The same thing happened in the World Cup in Australia in 1985. It was Pat Porter(US) and Wodajo Bulti(Ethiopia). Porter and Bulti went to the wire and Porter was 6/100s of a second( not tenths, HUNDRETHS) behind Bulti. Schildhaur was third again.
Wonderful! The finish is simply great

that would be scary to be trailed by a guy that you knew could run a 53 sec. last lap!!

That kick came out of nowhere...hahaha

Yifter was a different class. He won just as he pleased there. Could have 'kicked' 5 laps earlier if he'd felt like it.

That drafting is disgraceful. If they were to have run this one at a time it would have been all Virgin.
