Very nice. Great choreography. How long was the pass in real time? I can't even guess. I would like to see it. The "double kill" finish was great. Thanks for the post.
It's funny how many people selectively read the video description. See, usually when the word "stunt" is applied, as in "knight stunt show," it means that the goal is to perform a stunt--not a historical reenactment. Jackie Chan falls sixty feet from clock-towers not because such a feat is realistic, but because it's fucking AWESOME. And whether accurate or not, the klingon and bowl-cut guy fighting is, in my opinion, awesome.
Craptacular klopfechters. The high speed camera makes it absolutely clear that not a single thing that they did was medieval or Renaissance Martial Arts.
@MacUladh Umm... Wut?? The high speed camera makes it absolutely clear how well choreographed their stunt show performance was prepared. What masters are you studying? I am studying Fiore dei Liberi, mostly the Getty manuscript. The German Fechtbuchs after Lichtenauer, particularly Dobringer, and Katzbalger show assaults like these, although Messer forms from the Glasgow Fechtbuch also are demonstrated. I have not yet the skill to perform, but I hope to soon.
This is a real sword fight, people. You think you can pick up a katana, swing it and break something and call yourself a swordsman. Years of practice and studying slash stride, lunge aim, and several other swordhand abilities make you a swordsman, not a shirt that says it and a katana.
@TheUnsolvebleProblem There are actually cameras with up to 1,000,000 fps, and if you sponsor me such a camera, i swear to post videos with more than 300 fps. Only costs 150,000 dollar, please send it to my address. Also, Time Warp is lame.
This whole comments section makes HEMA 'experts' look like the most pedantic fuckers on the planet. The kind of people who would watch Planet Terror and still point out the technical flaws.
@bcharville This is not entirely true. You should always have a certain angle when blocking, otherwise this could break the blade. So ... not flat and not on the edge ... the angle between: P Another issue is the validity of the static block. The best is a dynamic block, where we change the direction of impact of our enemy with our sword. In this case, much smaller forces acting on the blade and the risk of damage decreases.
You're dissing them for edge parrying? In that kit and their fighting style? That's like saying hitler was a bad man because he tried to avoid paying for rounds at the pub.
@bcharville I don't claim know much about swords, but if you block with the flat side is there a possibility that the sword will bend and the blow will land?
@DarkLego22 Oh ok. I guess the only swords I've seen have been of poor quality because they always bend and wobble when struck, even on the flat side.
@bcharville Crap. I have owned my sword for less than a year, it is well notched, and I have not yet sparred full speed. Blocking is running away. A hard parry is a defensive move. Parry your opponent's flat with your edge on the counter-cut, or beat his sword aside, and continue your stroke through a posta to cut or thrust. Collect his sword on your crossguard, move inside, finish him with your dagger, or take his own sword, knock him down, and kill him with your boots. Questions?
If this is a demo of a knights sword fight why didn't the guy in black stab the guy in red in the face when he first circled his head with the sword? Now a days it's all fantasy. You can have a "real" sword fight without killing your opponent. It's called control of your weapon. But today everybody wants to just play. They don't even break a sweat when they train. What BS.
@Nighti88 at what part in the description which says: "A sword fight at a knight STUNT show at 300 FPS." did you not fucking understand? moronic troll-fish?
nice moves, the only part i didn't like is how halfway through the fight they restarted it with the precise same set of moves as before and then went from above instead of below, they practiced a lot.
Is anyone else shaking their head at the number of fencers and other legitimate swordsmen here posting comments about things they're doing wrong? They're actors, performing a choreographed and rehearsed fight. It's doubtful they know very much at all about real swordplay. Think of this less as swordfighting and more as dancing. If it's not accurate or believable enough, take it up with the choreographer. He's the one who ought to know a bit about swordplay if he wants to stage realistic duels.
Upload in full speed? This is really cool to watch, but I think it would be a LOT more awesome if I saw the full speed. I don't want to download it and do it myself without the uploaders premission...
You know what's great? Being able to see what is happening. I hate the moviemaker's habit of jump-cutting and close-up-ing everything in a fight so you have no idea what the hell is going on. "Chop slas- huh? Oh, thrus-wait, now chop-spin-slash- ah? Uh. Uh, grab cho-- what the fuck just happe- oh, it's over? It's over."
@ContradictoryNature Heh, nicely said. Unfortunately the trend with most directors in Hollywood is just to follow the herd and do what everyone else is doing, so it's not likely to change..
when you see none choreographed stuff it is no where near as interesting to watch half the time if its not interesting then people wont come and watch.
I think it is fair to say there is a difference between theatrical/choreographed sword fights and practical. One of the big no-no's in any kind of fighting is turning your back on an opponent - let alone turning your back on an opponent that has a huge sharp blade in hand with the intent of sticking it in you. When I see any Martial Artist doing 360 degree turns mid fight I have to question their knowledge and sanity.
Good fight, I like the flow added from the slo-mo.
As others say, you are simply striking blades, but on the other hand why would you want them to mutilate each other? Yes it does look scripted, probably because it's at a Ren. Fair. You don't want to end up looking like you're just flailing around, which is what unpractised and sword fights turn into.
I just can't seem to shut off the WMA person in me when I watch this stuff. While I admire the choreography I just can't get past the fact that if someone free played me fighting like that they'd be all sorts of dead in about 30 sec or less. I really have to loosen up.
i noted a few instances, like when the guy jumped the low cut, the next move would have been a simple cut to the head on the way down, he doesnt even look like hes trying to cut, he just holds the sword casually,
or the fact that they seem to be not aming for the guy but just for his sword.
I think the key here is to get over myself and realize that stage fighting is a dance, not combat. The dancers try and maintain the same interval between them at all times, while a combatant will try and close the interval and own the center line as quickly as possible. My fencing instructor had the same problem. He tried to get certified in stage combat but failed the class because he kept "killing" his partners. The instructor would yell at him saying "This is not Agrippa!".
@mcapanelli Precisely. In a real sword duel, you're trying to kill the other guy. In stage fights, you don't want to risk hurting your compatriot. The purpose of it is to entertain an audience - but that doesn't mean you can't be a trained fencer or kendo practitioner. I've tried my hand at both and found I'm a skilled fighter, but I also found stage-fighting is actually very fun to participate in.
Even so, it doesn't take a master to know the difference between a real duel and fakes.
cool, but definitely choreographed. watch the knight in black prepare for the strikes before they come, and the lack of recoil/ follow through in the blades. It was still awesome.
I get the feeling this is a scripted battle, so their hands, arms etc are pretty safe. You'd never see someone duck a blow to the head and jump over a blow to the feet in an actual fight.
@Mistwraith99 The most common injuries in re-enactment are hand and finger injuries.
I have had several bad hits to my hands.....If I was not wearing full Malianese mitten gauntlets, I dread to think what damage could have happened!... as it was I suffered bad brusing !! I think scripted or not, its foolhardy to take the chance........still I'm glad it's not my fingers!.....lol :-)
@stephenDB The battle is coreographed. They don't need gloves or other defences because, in theory they know were hit comes. But of course this is in theory :)
@stephenDB surely choreography removes most of the risk as the blows are timed, there are points where they appear to be waiting for the strike. When you say full contact is that full contact as in shield is no hold back full attack last one event type deal if so awesome, been looking to join a group the best i've seen so far are Vikings of Middle England who have a similar method but there a bit of a distance away from me know of any good groups in devon?
Thats not evil, thats only a show into the park,a good show. And I know the black Knighter,it`s Laurent Sorianello from france. At this time I was into the backstage-rooms by the Cascadeurs. It was funny all the time.
they had plenty opportinuties to wound eachother if it was made to look like a real fight, the guy with a berd seems to be here to block the other guy's sword, that's all. When he crouchs to dodge the circular strike of the other guy, he would have stabbed him in the meanwhile if it was a real fight.
I can not watrch this. So many missed opportunities to strike. So many silly blows and blocks. Why you strike at his sword, if you can cut off his hand? Damn it.. shouldn't watch choreography in slow-mo once again.
@ChessWyrm I agree. I was watching it and counting the chances for a kill. This is an impressive display of skill. But far too many openings were left.
@OperationThor Not sure at all. Sorry, I am in fencing for several years, so 'coolness' for me means 'performing actions to neutralize your opponent in most effective way' or at least pretend to do so, not 'dancing in a rhythm'. Probably this is just not my thing at all.
@ChessWyrm but fencing is a highly skilled and technical sport where as anyone can pic up a sword and make it look half descent so its a ballence entertainment being the primary function here rather than realism
@KinSmallProductions I'd say main cause of my comments was shifted balance of realism-entertainment in this one. It is no fight at all, though I must admit their movement is mostly smooth and they should've practiced a lot. It is not a 'sword fight', rather it is a piece of entertaining art, if you can say so. But there is no offence to artists from my side - they had their goal and they achieved it. Probably.
The performance taught me many lessons. If I were the Klingon I would have struck several times, but each time he dodged instead, and then there was the man's blade. I'm no sword fighter, so a slo-mo version like this helps me appreciate the art and skill involved.
Come on people, relax. This is theatrical, it's showy, it's nice to look at, but it's not REAL! And the people performing know that too, and if the people watching this vid think that this is how swordfighting was conducted in the middle ages, then let them. If you're so worried, just put up a FRIENDLY comment saying that this is obviously not real, but there's no need to bash the performance. I personally thought it was great :)
I think this was put together with entertainment in mind first and foremost. I doubt these guys are saying it is 'real combat' when clearly it is not. I see no reason to bash the video...some of what I'm seeing is actually eye-catching; for instance, the knight in the red surcoat is wearing a hauberk that I KNOW had to be custom made for him- the sleeves taper, there's no flare at the wrist and it doesn't swing about unduly.
More than the turnings, the Hollywood action that I hate the most is when they dodge attacks by crouching down and jumping up.
About the finger: even in a balanced sword, passing the finger above the crossguard helps to handle it. That's why in time they developed extra protections over the crossguard like the cupguard for the rapier. But if you dont have that extra protection, you should never pass your finger over the cross.
Actions are repeating. There are too many chanches to kill oponent on both sides. That combat is silly (and it is powered by the end...), taht turnings are only "Hollywood SHITS" ,and the last action, which I mean that actors "cut" each other at the same moments - it is horrible! - in that chops isn't energy to kill oponent ( in addition to in chainmail)...
So, guys, with this "encounter" go to the Hollywood lot, but please, don't show it to people, because they think THIS is real combat...
@DiarfOlafson You are just showing off how much of an expert you are. Well, your investigative skills are no better than what you are criticizing here. Go google for "Europa Park Rust" and be enlightened what this sword fight is good for - it is part of a 30 minute show for children. Bummer.
@SebiTimeWaster not very cool when the kid sucks at acting and they cant Synch their blows and have to slow their blows down to be able to keep going wihtout Hitting each other
@SebiTimeWaster He has a point though. It may look really cool at full speed, but in slow motion, it looks very silly. You can tell they've never been anywhere near a real sword training.
My best guess is that the sword isn't properly balanced. If the balance point of the sword is to far up to the tip, putting your finger over the crossguard helps increasing the maneuvrability of the sword. I wouldn't encourage doing it though...
@biggiddyballs Yup, however, this is not a concept out of space. Swordsmen actually DID start to put a finger there in the late Medieval/Renaissance. It improved the control one exercised over the blade. In fact, swords were even given a special 'ring' to put your finger in. Btw, I personally don't like staged fights. What I LOVE are REAL fights BUT not a mindless hack'n'slash, but some good fencing. I've seen a few fights and man, it's hard to see good fighters. Not that I am one, of course...
Very nice. Great choreography. How long was the pass in real time? I can't even guess. I would like to see it. The "double kill" finish was great. Thanks for the post.

@stephenDB The battle is coreographed. They don't need gloves or other defences because, in theory they know were hit comes. But of course this is in theory :)
shakalus001 3 months ago
@stephenDB surely choreography removes most of the risk as the blows are timed, there are points where they appear to be waiting for the strike. When you say full contact is that full contact as in shield is no hold back full attack last one event type deal if so awesome, been looking to join a group the best i've seen so far are Vikings of Middle England who have a similar method but there a bit of a distance away from me know of any good groups in devon?

Is the oe with the red tunic using a flamberge?

@oddcarl1I'm pretty sure he is. Instead of the great-sword version of it he's using a long-sword variant.

do you have this at full speed?
mattwandcow 6 months ago
@mattwandcow no. you have to download this video and speed it up in a editing suite by yourself.
SebiTimeWaster 6 months ago
they had plenty opportinuties to wound eachother if it was made to look like a real fight, the guy with a berd seems to be here to block the other guy's sword, that's all. When he crouchs to dodge the circular strike of the other guy, he would have stabbed him in the meanwhile if it was a real fight.

assassin78727 7 months ago
I can not watrch this. So many missed opportunities to strike. So many silly blows and blocks. Why you strike at his sword, if you can cut off his hand? Damn it.. shouldn't watch choreography in slow-mo once again.

@ChessWyrm agreed
Dallasarcher 6 months ago
@ChessWyrm i agree..it's very obviously choreographed, it just looks weird seeing them aim and try to hit the other guys sword instead of each other

@ChessWyrm I agree. I was watching it and counting the chances for a kill. This is an impressive display of skill. But far too many openings were left.

@ChessWyrm What a dumb and swanky reply. This is a show fight in a public pleasure ground.

@ChessWyrm At normal speed this looks really cool.
OperationThor 2 months ago
@OperationThor Not sure at all. Sorry, I am in fencing for several years, so 'coolness' for me means 'performing actions to neutralize your opponent in most effective way' or at least pretend to do so, not 'dancing in a rhythm'. Probably this is just not my thing at all.
ChessWyrm 2 months ago
@ChessWyrm but fencing is a highly skilled and technical sport where as anyone can pic up a sword and make it look half descent so its a ballence entertainment being the primary function here rather than realism
KinSmallProductions 2 months ago
@KinSmallProductions I'd say main cause of my comments was shifted balance of realism-entertainment in this one. It is no fight at all, though I must admit their movement is mostly smooth and they should've practiced a lot. It is not a 'sword fight', rather it is a piece of entertaining art, if you can say so. But there is no offence to artists from my side - they had their goal and they achieved it. Probably.
ChessWyrm 2 months ago
@ChessWyrm i quite agree

The performance taught me many lessons. If I were the Klingon I would have struck several times, but each time he dodged instead, and then there was the man's blade. I'm no sword fighter, so a slo-mo version like this helps me appreciate the art and skill involved.
TheThomaswastaken 7 months ago
More like this. Some martial arts and sword fighting via slow-mo could be very informative.
TheThomaswastaken 7 months ago
The guy looks like an effing Klingon
MrGuitarphenomenon 9 months ago
Come on people, relax. This is theatrical, it's showy, it's nice to look at, but it's not REAL! And the people performing know that too, and if the people watching this vid think that this is how swordfighting was conducted in the middle ages, then let them. If you're so worried, just put up a FRIENDLY comment saying that this is obviously not real, but there's no need to bash the performance. I personally thought it was great :)
dagwyn 10 months ago 2
I think this was put together with entertainment in mind first and foremost. I doubt these guys are saying it is 'real combat' when clearly it is not. I see no reason to bash the video...some of what I'm seeing is actually eye-catching; for instance, the knight in the red surcoat is wearing a hauberk that I KNOW had to be custom made for him- the sleeves taper, there's no flare at the wrist and it doesn't swing about unduly.

This is a Fail. Turing, twisting , jumping ducking, would get you killed, if you were fighting a real European martial artist
AngelsArmour 1 year ago
More than the turnings, the Hollywood action that I hate the most is when they dodge attacks by crouching down and jumping up.
About the finger: even in a balanced sword, passing the finger above the crossguard helps to handle it. That's why in time they developed extra protections over the crossguard like the cupguard for the rapier. But if you dont have that extra protection, you should never pass your finger over the cross.
duran3d 1 year ago
its crazy to think that shit shit happened for real back in the day
ParkerGiesbrecht 1 year ago
Actions are repeating. There are too many chanches to kill oponent on both sides. That combat is silly (and it is powered by the end...), taht turnings are only "Hollywood SHITS" ,and the last action, which I mean that actors "cut" each other at the same moments - it is horrible! - in that chops isn't energy to kill oponent ( in addition to in chainmail)...
So, guys, with this "encounter" go to the Hollywood lot, but please, don't show it to people, because they think THIS is real combat...
DiarfOlafson 1 year ago 3
@DiarfOlafson
I agree i have a clan in ramsbottom that does real sword fighting and re-enactments.
If some body did a spin like that the opponent would just slice across the back if he knew wot he was doing
thehalounit 10 months ago
@DiarfOlafson Please film yourself hacking someone to death in slow-motion so we can see what 'real' combat is you retard
The1stPoster 9 months ago
@DiarfOlafson You are just showing off how much of an expert you are. Well, your investigative skills are no better than what you are criticizing here. Go google for "Europa Park Rust" and be enlightened what this sword fight is good for - it is part of a 30 minute show for children. Bummer.

@SebiTimeWaster not very cool when the kid sucks at acting and they cant Synch their blows and have to slow their blows down to be able to keep going wihtout Hitting each other

bondanel 4 months ago
@SebiTimeWaster He has a point though. It may look really cool at full speed, but in slow motion, it looks very silly. You can tell they've never been anywhere near a real sword training.

Choreographed or not, he's asking to lose a finger with it up over the crossguard like that.
biggiddyballs 1 year ago 61
@biggiddyballs he deserves to lose it ll who needs ten fingers anyways ?
wingsoffire55 1 year ago
@biggiddyballs
My best guess is that the sword isn't properly balanced. If the balance point of the sword is to far up to the tip, putting your finger over the crossguard helps increasing the maneuvrability of the sword. I wouldn't encourage doing it though...
Heinrichll 1 year ago
@biggiddyballs Yup, however, this is not a concept out of space. Swordsmen actually DID start to put a finger there in the late Medieval/Renaissance. It improved the control one exercised over the blade. In fact, swords were even given a special 'ring' to put your finger in. Btw, I personally don't like staged fights. What I LOVE are REAL fights BUT not a mindless hack'n'slash, but some good fencing. I've seen a few fights and man, it's hard to see good fighters. Not that I am one, of course...
