  • Excellent rendition of a marvelous work. Keep up the great work.

  • your performance is really great :)I have a very special relationship with Pictures at an Exhibition,it started when my father first played the orchestral version of it when I was 5 and it culminated when we decided that even though we are just amateur pianists, we will learn it (there were 4 of us and we divided it)and I'm not usually satisfied with piano versions I find on youtube, but yours was satisfying :D maybe I'd play the Gate slightly slower for the dramatic effect, but otherwise, great:)

  • @licor007 I am happy that you enjoy my version ;-) And good luck with your own playing!

  • Wow...a very original take on a standard. I really believe that you knew what Mussorgsky was trying to express throughout. Yours is a completely visceral performance, full of inertia that pulls you from one phrase to the next. The execution is not 'refined', nor should it be (however, it is obvious from your Bach recordings that you are totally capable of expressing 'refinement' where it is called for). Truly first rate.

  • @chemprofmatt Thank you for that!

  • amazing!

  • This is a wonderful piece. I heard the ravel arrangement first and quite enjoyed that. It is a wonderful interpretation. The way you played it was out of this world. I hope to play this piece this well one day. This piece gives me the chills. I love it absolutely love it! Excellent job! Ugh I can just go on forever and listen to this song till the day I die.

  • @beethoven1624 Thank you for that! Keep up listening, and good luch with your practice!

  • 5:15 through 5:45, I hope your hear that magic.......

  • This is wonderful and you have an amazing talent! Thank you so much for posting all 4 parts!!!

First of all, I am not knowledgable in music but I have heard something curious. It's funny but in listening to Part 2 at around 6:00 maybe 6:05 it sounds like one part of Rhapsody in Blue and in Part 3 at around 2:00 sounds like another part of it. I looked up the dates to see who copied whom...this was composed in 1874, RIB in 1924.

  • if this doesn't stir the soul , nothing will

  • 5:28 ......not of this world

  • Awesome. You almost never here any of Mussorgsky's works on piano any more, even though that was how they were originally meant to be heard.

  • im so in love with this song its crazy, i played it on the french horn for my concert

  • Unmatched here on Youtube. You played without allure and with full force, like a window back into Mussorgskys heart. Thank you very much for uploading this.

  • @BlackBarMusic Thank you so much for your nice comment!

  • I can't imagine the hand-eye coordination it takes at 6:00

    Amazing job!

  • This is so inspiring!!!! I have been listening to the Horowitz recording of Pictures at an Exhibition for MONTHS, and my copy of the music finally came after weeks of being on backorder, so naturally I watched all the YouTube videos of this work, following along with the music.... and yours is by far my favorite, even topping Horowitz! Beautifully played; I actually teared up! I will be watching this video over and over as I begin to attempt to learn parts of this piece! Thank you SO much!!!!!

  • @karammeth . Thank you so much for that! I am honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as Horowitz, who has been one of my greatest inspirations. Good luck with your practice!

  • @karammeth

Thank you so much for that! I am honored to be mentioned in the same sentence as mr. Horwowitz, one of my greatest inspirations ;-) Good luck with your practice! Today I practice Chopin for my recital tomorrow...

  • What happened to the notes at 5:34?

  • almost forgot...bravo!!

  • Thanks, and good luck with your Great Gate!

  • learning Great Gates of Kiev right now for National Honor Society...wish me luck

  • i play piano for 10 years now and i must say... woow!! really great job! it must be hard work to play like you do! :) i like it ;)

  • All four parts just marvelous! I'am deeply impressed. Whish I could play piano like this. Five star rating.

  • Thank you for listening to it all, and giving such a nice comment! If you have talent and spend 10 hours a day for about 10 years, there might be a chance ;-)

  • @koncertpianist

you play really good piano. i listened too part 1,2,3 and 4 and it´s really beautiful.

i play piano too but if I can so good play piano as you...

  • one of the best interpretations so far!!!

although, i cannot do Baba Yaga as well as you did. still working hard on it though =\ im quite envious of you

  • Excellent interpretation!! Full of life and vitality, grandeur and elegance: bravo - well done!! If i may offer just one caveat.... there could be more contrast between the notes in the "Great Gate" section, especially near the beginning: it sounded a bit stiff and wooden in places - perhaps more rubado, a more relaxed touch and more emphasis on the first and fourth beats of the measures - to make the piece "flow" somewhat better.

  • cool stuff, I like Ravel's orchestral arrangement better though!

  • wonderful, great job

the first day of my music class in high school i walked in and played the first 12 notes of this song on the piano. my music teacher loved it.

  • and now...

I try to play one theme from this piece (the hut on chickens legs) on my piano! :)

    it isn't easy!!

I say respect to you!! I like to repeat me:

you are a VERY VERY good pianist!

  • Dear miss XXX-Annanass! Thank you, and good luck with your Hut On Chicken Legs ;-)

  • Many congratulations from Mexico City. You are great, Maestro; faultless performance. Thank you very much for sharing.

  • Thank you very much for your comment!´Have a nice day in Mexico City!

  • Very good! And a hot piano player as well :-P

  • whenever I listen Mussorgsky, it is always something magical ...

and he's a formidable interpreter!!! It's divine! Exceptional!

    many congratulations ...

  • a wonderful piece!!

    a very good pianist!!

I have dance eurithmics at this piece!

greetings from Germany!! and sorry for this bad english :)

  • Thank you for that! And I am not angry about your english ;-) it+s fine, as long as you are dancing to the music...

  • Absolutely remarkable...rhythmically, it's spot on, it never drags nor is it rushed. The melodies ring out. I'm not sure one could expect much more from this piece. I adore the music...it's bombastic, but it's supposed to be. I think yours is exemplary playing on par with the great pianists. Best of luck...come to America. (Do you play any concerti??)

  • Thank you very much! I would love to come to America! I prefer the romantic concertos, Rach, Grieg, Chopin, Tchaicowsky. Also love the 20th. century ones very much Ravel, Prokofiev, Shostakovitch, Khakaturjan, Bartok, Stravinsky. I didn´t record any of them yet, but it will be my greatest plesure to do so one day... ;-) Do you know anyone in the states I could contact in order to get tasks over there? (Or do you have any suggestions?)

  • koncertpianist

    naturalament, maestro!

  • Amongst the classical purists, his name may be less than loved, but it was Keith Emerson who introduced me to this-love all of it! and Greg Lake singing the melody at 3.13... :)

  • I think this is the original... ;-)

  • I only meant, if it hadn't been for Keith Emerson, I would'nt ever have discovered the original piece, (or interpretations),and so to my next comment, below (I hope!)...

  • I am glad you discovered it! Long live Keith Emerson (as I concentrate my interests on music from 1750-1970, I am sorry to say that I am not familiar with Keith Emersons version ;-) So if it hadn´t been for you, I wouldn´t ever have discovered him...

  • Beautiful playing. Baba-Yaga is my favourite Mussorgsky!

  • How long have you been learning the piece? Ive been going for almost 5 months but the only parts close to performance standard are promenade, gnomus and baba-jaga

  • both pieces remind me of a battle

1)Hut of Baba Yaga is the battle and 2) the Old Captial of Kiev is the victorios march which is one of the reasons why i love both pieces so much =) any tips on how i could improve playing both pieces?

  • Woah! You can play the entire two pieces? the sheet music of Baba Yaga makes my head spin...

  • Trying to still play gnomus...but hey, this is amazing too. Did you play the whole entire thing, because this is about half an hour! that would require amazing focus...

  • Yes, I played through the whole piece, but parted the video into 4 parts because youtube doesn´t allow more than 10 minutes in one file. Good luck with your Gnomus, the ending is difficult ;-)

  • fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for your entusiasm Mr. White Grand Piano!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Once again, thank you for uploading this for us to view! If you do plan on coming to the USA, will it be posted on your page?

  • Woaw, that was amazing. I'm practicing this a the moment ( well, just the first part : I end it when the chromatic octaves come up ) , but im only playing for 8 years, so my experience is not yet enough trained to play this ... beast. My teacher says that if i give it time and keep playing it, i'll overcome lots of difficulties. Anyways, enough of me; Bravo for playing it brilliant !

  • Fun as Ravel & Emerson interpretations are.

    MM's original is THE version.

A very fine 'stab' at one of the great works.

    Thanks very much.

  • Oh my word, are you amazing! I have to admit this made me emotional (in a good way :) ). If I ever tried to play this I think my head would explode haha!

  • Thank you for your nice words!

  • check out ingmar lazars version on my channel

  • It makes you emotional too? haha I cry...I can't help it. I love this piece so much, and to hear such a wonderful performance puts me over the edge. :-)

  • Oh wow, I thought I was lame for crying (in other words me too, haha). But yeah, same here. It's just so beautiful. :)

  • Ok, if I am talking to a famous pianist = O I am (can't think of a word) YOU ARE AMAZING! I once saw the sheet music for this and it just pretty much made my head hurt. I play piano, but my main instrument is violin...hey, if this gets too annoying just tell me, as I have a habit of getting carried away giving comments. = D

  • Don´t worry! I am still not known outside Scandinavia, so you might actually be my first american fan ;-)I would love to go there to play concerts some time. I have never been "over there". And it doesn´t annoy me that much to be told I am amazing. I think I can handle it for the moment...

  • OH MY GOODNESS...YOU'RE EIDE!?!??!!?!?!?!?!? I just don't get your reply, sorry, but if you are the actual person, YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!

  • Thanks mate. This is one of the most funny conversations I have ever had ;-)And about the pedal from 0:22; Lots of pedal... Pedal on 3 measures, then 1. M 153, 2 measures and so on. Remember you are a russian witch.

  • I don't get specificly how the petal affects starting from 00:22, but it just seems very nice. How did you get these recordings? have you met him yourself? OR ARE YOU THE ACTUAL PERSON??? Very unlikely, but nice videos..

  • I am myself! And I just put up a camera and made the recordings, all pictures are from one playthrough, without any stopping or cutting what so ever. Maybe the recording isn´t perfect, but I personaly hate perfect recordings! I love mostly the old records...

  • Hello. I just want to say that you do an incredible job on this piece.

I am trying to audition into julliard, and I want to play this piece. Do you ehave any suggestions ont his piece?

  • Do you want to play the whole Pictures at an Exhibition? It is very important that you try it out before the Julliard audition before an audience. It is a very big work and demands your full concentration for a very long time, and this can be surprisingly difficult the first time for the performer. Good luck!

  • = O are you really going to try the whole thing???? Well good luck with that...you'll need massive amounts of practice. As we can see, Eide doesn't need sheet music, which probably means that he practiced this enough to play by memory. At least that's what happens to me when I play on violin.

  • Great Job! These two pieces are my favorites in "Pictures at an Exhibition".

  • Thanks! Also among my favorite pieces... And a fantastic ending on a great musical journey.

  • np. It's so amazing that Mussorgsky can think about and compose these songs while viewing from one picture to another.

  • baba jaga is great

  • I love how the Promenade theme returns in 'The Great Gates!'.

Brilliantly played, plus how do you play that run down at 5:54?

  • The run is actually pritty simple: E-flat Major scale in both hands, one can think 8 note- groups 6 times, each group starting at a new note: A-flat,G,F,E-flat,D and finally from C the last "scale" is only right hand. It+s much easier to play when one think groups of notes in stead of a lot of single ones... The funny thing is that I never thought about this, before you asked, but my subconsciousness did!

  • But how do you play the run down so fast? When I try I just mess up or slow down considerably! Is there some sort of fingering technique?

  • The normal fingering for an E-major scale in both hands is definately the best. Practice each of the 6 groups separately and stop between them, maybe repeat each group. When you start to practice all the run, accentuate the first note of each group, (so that you just have to think: A-flat, G, F, E-flat, D, C.) The fingering: Right hand: 3. finger on E-flat, 4. finger on B-flat (1. finger before 3. and 4th.), Left hand: 3. finger on E-flat, 4th. finger on A-flat, (both followed by 1. finger).

  • My favorite too, I think! So russian, such energy, so expressive, so fantastic music!

  • my favourite piece from this suite! I even tried to play it! brilliant!
