  • John uses the right side of his brain, we use the wrong side.

  • I want him to describe graphics technology to me every night before I go to bed.

  • this guy is so smart he cant speak like a normal person

  • What I mean is that if you wan't to make hole in the wall therever you want, it have to affect source code (map unit) and in idea at this moment it's impossible, so it's replaced by textures.

  • @Nervejunction It's because model architecture. You see, on creating character step you are "drawing" it in code (or some special program to it). When you are considering getting bullet by this character, you must draw it again, step by step while bullet is getting hot it will be look like. It's abut 6-7 steps so it's 6-7 same characters but with litte differences. Of course it's older way to make it, but I wan't you to understand it in the idea.

  • @reikosoft

Hey man I really appreciate you explaining that to me...I know you have a much deeper understanding of this then I do. I know its not as simple as just magically making it happen like my comment may suggest ..in my perspective though the evolution of advancements is so unbalanced...these days we seem to have games that nail some aspects..and completely forget about the rest..mainly in graphics and effects..leaving out game play as a minor detail. Thanks for your comment:)

  • @Nervejunktion

Yeah, no problem. About other aspects of games: in some of mane interviews, John Carmack was confused about timing in Rage, especially about position of sun (just like in Gothic 2 and 3). He said that after all they figured it out that it not really matters, because the game is not about that. They preffer to focus on core of the game than on details. About the game itself I though it's another shoot-to-kill game with awesome effects, but as I see it's more then that ;)

  • waaaay over my head

  • Szkoda że napisów nie ma bo koleś gada tak że trudno coś zrozumieć, ale wydaje się wszystko sensowne

  • On John's t-shirt, under the glass of water, it says "half full".

It means he's an optimist. :)

  • @EndeavourAccuracy well if you code things you gotta be, trust me!

  • wtf is compact disc(cd)? =)))

  • You really are clueless when it comes to optimizing audio. First you force us to turn it down when you slam the music at the start and require that we have to turn it all the way up just to even begin to hear the interview, very immature and sloppy.

  • LOL, his voice sounds a little like Krang from TMNT! ^_^

Seriously, Carmack is my programming hero. I'm currently writing a simple 3D engine(somewhere between Wolf3D and DOOM), and I can appreciate anyone who can write a fast 3D engine from scratch with no hardware acceleration.

  • a gdzie napisy PL >?

  • this is why I love idsoftware and will continue supporting them

they speak fluently, they look professional and they want to have the original FEEL to the games, not the hollywood celling freak illuminati bullllSSShieeett!!!

    idsoftware ruls

  • lol illuminati. Right on :-)

  • i cant wait for id tech 5 developer tools

..i thought source dev kit was piss easy already but my god when i saw the demo in 2007 i was blown away.

  • This guy is a Genius!!

  • @Pintolool no. he just has a lot of free time.

  • tak jak pisaliście w gazecie "nikt go nie rozumie"

  • gosh... He's so sexy ^^

  • the sound.. oh god the sound

  • +1 to you sir!

  • This guy is a fucking god. I wish I was this nerdy...

  • Cheers John & CD Action

  • Carmack is GOD!

  • He's pretty much the inventor of the modern First-Person Shooter

  • John Carmack is one of the founders of id software and probably the greatest computer graphics programmer to have ever lived. He has pioneered 1st person shooters with such graphics engines for games like doom, quake and soon to be released rage. You can WIKI him for more info.

  • You know carmack got the FPS concept from NASA right ?

I 'm pretty sure he got the idea for the FPS genre from a game made by NASA back in 1971.

He has connections in nasa so.. = ) no doubt in my mind he got the idea for fps games from there.

  • If what you are saying is true...so what? That's like saying Einstein got the idea for general relativity from Copernicus or Galileo. The fact is, he built a graphics engine along with a game that changed the way we perceived computer games. I bet you can find bits of his code in every major graphics engine on the market today.

  • No, read Masters of Doom. He got it from Wing Commander and other flight sims. Any puported connections to Nasa would only be in the past 10 or so years, well after he made the FPS genre.

  • Extremely annoying that the video starts with him speaking very low, followed by a tremendous loud intro video. Anyone who turned up his volume is met with an annoying and terribly loud jingle.

When making videos, prevent this from happening. Keep volume levels the same.

  • Noted, will do.

  • Hey CDACTION. The video was shot in SD colorspace (16-235) and the overlay/effects use HD colorspace (0-255). If you wanna make everything look even, you gotta stretch the SD to the HD... Just sayin'.

  • Will Rage have multiplayer mode?

  • dunno why but I never get tired of watching and listening john carmack's interviews. This guy is pure genious :o)

  • couldn't have said it better myself. :)

  • This man is the GOD of 3d and FPS gaming! He rulez!

  • Yeah, he literally created the entire FPS genre.

  • Great interview, must be the best I've seen in a long time!

  • when was this interview? 2007 , 2008 , 2009?

  • July 2009

  • Nie mam problemow ze zrozumieniem. Get skill noobz. ;)

  • Podajecie czlowiekowi picie w takiej butelce?

Oj cd action, nie kompromitujcie sie :D

Wysoka szklaneczka by bardziej, ale coz...

  • widac ze bylo nagrywane kalkulatorem... :P

:P Thx from the mountain.

  • Comment removed
