tama kasi sa school may mga major subjects na dapat magfocus mga students.. minor subjects lang ang art at music kaya di na nabibigyan ng atensyon masyado
ALso most schools encourage arts program. I live in CAnada but I would guess it's the same in america. I go to really academic school. My school has a violin program that half are school s in, a concert band program, an art program, a drama program. I also has dance clubs. People there are always encourage people do be involved in the arts some how and still do math and science, so I don't really know what this video is talking about.
what about the people who excel at math or science more than the art. I know people who have no artistic ability whatsoever and they drop arts as soon as they can.
At my school we are fighting to be creative. Computer, no. Art, no. Music, yes but no at the same time. If we didn't have creativity the world would be drab and boring. And we are getting more and more closer to a world without creativity. We should have a right to paint and draw freely and not be punished if we are wrong.
Please view my highly imaginative home videos on YouTube . Schools do not notice , nurture and value creativity ........ My favourite is the grey cat above ......Thank you .
schools teach things in a streamlined manner because less and less jobs are focused on whether you can make a sculpture or if you can do cartwheels or paint. Math and science can be proven and utilized in almost ANY field. The ARTS on the other hand, cannot, despite the oblong and often ridiculous connections and metaphors critics make. Go to college and get a degree in ART history, and you'll be waitering tables for the rest of your life. get a degree in physics, and make 6-figures. do the math
@uconnstudent You left your comment a little while ago but I would like to reply to it. What you are missing is the connection with all of our brilliant physics students who also have an interest in art or music. It only accents their talent. Sir Ken is not "down" on this form of education...obviously, these physic students who are pursuing their degrees have a talent, they have found what they are good at. If however, you are a brilliant musician, and you are forced to get a degree in Physics..
@voispoed cont'd. ...then how does that do anybody any good, except maybe the University, but will that student be as successful, and give them bragging rights? Sir Ken shared a story at his talk on March 30th in Costa Mesa. The son of a friend of his chose an Art History major-where would it get him? He is now working for a premier auction house--I think he said Sotheby's--travels the world, makes an outrageous salary, and loves what he is doing. It all comes down to the individual, and talent.
@voispoed I would also like to add that I know of engineers who are armed with PhDs who will not be hired if they don't exhibit the "right stuff" during their interviews. In addition, Sir Ken was introduced at the March 30th lecture by a young female Boeing Engineer who attended a predominately arts-focused University. Boeing is begging our CA education system to focus on the Arts, and restore their importance. This is merely one case of many, so please reconsider your stance on the Arts.
The first goal of public schools, churches, and media is to suck all logic out of people, then to instill them with as much nonsense as possible, and then to manipulate them into doing what they are told. The effect of this is the elimination of all life on earth.

Ever wonder why the weird outcasts in school end up as billionares, celebrities and artists? Creativity.
Unfortunately, kids today are being brainswashed that ''normal'' is the same thing as ''good.'' Kids who dare to be different are ostracized, bullied and labeled ''abnormal.'' That's why kids, from an early age, start ''blending in'' and in the process sacrifice their creative, which is important and irrecplacable. This is sad.
I find it all necessary. But for someone to comment and say math and science are easily taught but arts aren't, I find that worse. I don't understand math and science that easily so obviously it was never easy for my teachers to teach me. Arts, on the other hand, come very easily for me. I have danced, sang, played an instrument and dabble in drawing. I don't need to be taught that. I never did. I explored these options on my own. People are different. Not everybody wants to learn arts or math.
@mgillis11383 math and science is litterally restricted to one side of the brain, a side that neglects creativity, this is what they want, they wouldn't let Adam or Eve eat the "tree of knowledge" you think that rule has changed ??
school tells you what you need to know not what you should know because you would be good at it.Shit I went to an ART HIGH SCHOOL.Not a regular school. The georgia gov. gave my school such a hard time with funding etc. They didnt want my school to do well. They drove all the money to other non art schools. And to top it off I went to HS in a urban low income area and art was the only thing keeping kids in school. They cut the arts I dropped out. That crazy testing killed me too
We need an education system that respects the beauty of life. Intelligence can only take us so far, if we do not appreciate our purpose on this Earth.
But to think that there should be put more value in dancing, drama etc. is equally wrong. Simply, because there are not as much prospects. The good ones would be reached, but:
The school teaches nearly only to copy! But the real art is NOT TO COPY!
School has killed my Creativity skills, killed my drawing skills , killed my open mind , killed my dream to dance , theier always containing me , and all of your work dosent let students use thier own creativity in thier own work. this is coming form a high school student. true why not let us be taught everyday of what hobbies we do
Hi is bang on. I have just started reading Seth Godin's new book Linchpin...it echoes this sentiment exactly. Our business systems are designed to make workers dispensable (replaceable), those that will survive will have creativity, ingenuity and ability to do more than show up and follow instructions. Our schools don't teach that; they suppress it.
how many dancers do you need or have jobs for and do you really need to go to a school to learn to dance?
you certainly need to go to school to learn mathematics, and a subject like mathematics is an incremental subject you keep learning more as go go to higher levels. high school math is just not high enough to be able to do anything like say engineering, you need to keep going further to do that.
Actually I go to school so I can get a good education in dance and academics. Finding a decent school to learn any art is necessary if you want pursue a career in it, just like any other subject. However, this is not Robinson's point. He doesn't think everyone should pursue careers in the arts, that is unrealistic. What he is saying is all subjects should be put on the same level. Schools support certain careers when they should be helping students reach whatever career they enjoy.
yeup the problems of our society can be traced back to one thing... we didn't learn dance in school. i'm not sure about you but i think math and science are a hell of a lot more imortant than dance or music. it's so unlikely that you're going to make money or a career out of these things that there is a reason we teach other things instead of those.
Even with all that science and math taught to kids in school... what are they qualified to do after they graduate high school? Flipping burgers. Knowledge is only valuable if it's rare. That's why college degrees are increasingly worthless.
It's the laws of supply and demand my friend, remember when getting a high school degree meant something? Engineering is in demand, that's why some people can find jobs... some in this 10% unemployment environment. Give it time... college degrees will be like high school degrees... which means you'll have to spend most your life in school... which means more loans and debt. Have fun paying that off.
Most schools teach people how to be good employees, not how to make and manage money, which is the real problem. And dangerous considering job security is a thing of the past... how many work for one company their whole lives anymore? If your goal is to make money then start your own business, invest, and research money and don't brake your back making someone else rich. Read Rich Dad Poor Dad.
I agree with having an educated public 100%... and it's called making your kids read books everyday, taking them to libraries which unlike most 4 year colleges are free. Any parent who thinks it's the governments job to educate their child is delusional... It's the parents responsibility. How can we expect to be free if we are taught by the slave masters?
very interesting interview! i'm doing youth work now for a year and in my experience i'm struck by the amount of restriction that is placed on people, the lack of imagination that seems to be allowed, and the aim of conformity
I believe it is nearly impossible to actually teach creativity. I think you need to already have a creative mindset to be creative, but I think the schools could do more to harbor the children who already have the creative thoughts. I myself am an artist and very creative, and I almost failed out of high school because all of my tests ended up with many colorful pictures, but not a lot of work done on them.
I don't think every kid should be put on full creative learning, but I believe ones who have talent and passion should be taught creativity. If you're great with normal school work, then let them learn it and love it.

The public system is fucked because its supposed to be fucked. If they educated everyone and inspired everyone to do what they want, their wouldn't be janitors to clean shit up. The gov has no goal on improving education because if they did everyone would wake up and realize how crappy they have it and upset the power balance of the society. dogs become pigs and the pigs beget sheep and so the toilet water turns around the bowl.
A nicely unfounded perspective. One of the worst things the government could do is limit the pool from which thinkers can originate. Not every janitor is upset with their work or hates their position. Not every janitor has to be a reject of the education system.
Apply affirmative action to schools an academic classes. For example lets say there's a school with math honors classes. The majority of the students are white not by any purpose. So somebody comes along and says there isn't enough ethnicity in those honors classes so they put people who don't meet the requirements into that class effectively dumbing it down. Thats whats wrong with the education system.
nigel you summed up my assessment perfectly. but my conclusion is that creativity is NOT a desirable trait for mass populace. obese vacant consumers are desirable, so long as our chief exports are fiat bills and bombs.
meaningful instruction is intended to be exclusive to the elite... how else are they to stay on top?
of course in my opinion people can clean up their own shit, forget division of labor. hopefully we are in the death throes of the industrial age and into information age finally!
I think you maybe missing one point. He is saying that the system tells people that the only place to search for passion is in specified areas (math and science). In other words, he is not saying that the system makes someone who is meant to be an artist a janitor over a businessman. He is saying that the system makes someone who is meant to be an artist not an artist... and thus that person never really finds true happiness.
Those that do not value education are not a voice of reason, they are the voice of emotion. I agree that the expression of emotion is important (i.e. the music, dancing and the arts), but what happens when you strip the education system of all things academic? You end up with a ridiculous amount of super emotional people with no life skills who can't take care of themselves. If the world consisted solely of musicians and artists, there would be nobody to clean toilets or serve food or move mail.
The world will always have the lower classes that will never be an issue. But the point I take from this is that a person who cleans toilets can in fact be happy if they find something else that gives them purpose as well (something that the 'system' doesn't allow them to appreciate: dance for instance)
who do you think moves the mail and cleans the toilets already? but you do touch on a critical point... putting dance on the same level as english may be a whole new way to dumb down the masses even further
You get what you pay for. Shit in = Shit out. Its shameful that we don't spend more money on education. Teachers have one of the most under-appreciated and under-paid professions in the world. And as far as teachers that "hate" their jobs are concerned, you try dealing with 30 kids every day who love to make your job difficult by acting up, only to have someone tell you that you're not doing a good enough job teaching their children.
Public education is only meant to help people with the most rudimentary areas of knowledge for functionality in society. You may be the best musician in the world, but if you can't balance a checkbook how will you survive? Last time I checked an Ebmaj7 chord won't land you a high paying career. You have to have some communication and networking skills for that. My point is that we cannot simply say that the system is flawed and blame the teachers of the world.
We won't have any idea that we enjoy math, science, music, literature etc. unless we are exposed to these subjects in some way or another. If you enjoy something, you pursue it to further your knowledge about it. You seek out other like-minded individuals that posses a greater understanding of a field so that you can absorb what they know and build upon it. Hence the reason that higher education exists. Public education is only meant as a means to educate the masses in a very minimal way.
People criticize teachers for not doing enough to expand education. I'm tired of hearing people complaining about teachers that don't "teach". First off, you are missing the whole point of this video if that is your perspective. Learning styles are diverse and dynamic. How is a teacher supposed to cater to the educational desires of a classroom of 30 different styles of learning? For that matter, how do people learn that they are interested in a particular subject?
My favorite teachers in school were always the ones that taught about life, not just the subject at hand. That's what teachers should do, teach. If I wanted someone to recite numbers and dates to me than I'd get a robot to teach me.
The education system = A great way of conditioning humans to gather in a building on time, punch a clock, sit at a desk all day, go nowhere fast, and get almost nothing out of it.
Most of what I learned came from experience, not school.
What I do for work today involves things that did not even exist when I went to school.
so true! Both, these video comments and the video itself, make a lot of great points. I'm so glad to see people that think the same as I do about the educational system. 5 stars
dnt read this(cuz it really wrks). u will gt kissd on the nearest frieday by the love of ur life. 2mara wll b the bst day of ur life hwever if you dnt post ths comment 2 at least 3 vids u will die withn 2 days nw uv startd readn this dnt stp this is so scary snd ths ovr 2 5 vids in 143 mins
n my personal life experience when I was young believe it or not I lived in Beverly Hills. Corrupt divorce laws and a horrible public education made me a slave to the stupitity of my parents and the whims of the public education system. I was enslaved by homework assignments that had nothing to do with my life. My time energy and creativity was also stolen by the evil public education system and there unhumanitarian doctrine of college worship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do schools kill creativity? If creativity was a person schools would be it's concentration camp! I think that young people are going through a creativity holocaust perpetrated by teachers especially ones who hate their jobs. Everyone who agrees this is a disgusting inconvenient truth give me a thumbs up. BTW I'm only twenty years old and I understand this.
absolutely right I think that after 5th grade everything I learned after that was basically a repeat. Not only that but, school was meant for education not for boredom and depression. Bored and depressed was my whole life in middle school!!
Math and science can easily be taught, but the arts require you develop a trait which is greater and more treasured than anything else you can imagine. Creativity is the key to success; you'll need this as a foundation to build your skyscraper.
@sorryloginfailed I agree. I have an Art degree, and before NCLB I was able to infuse art into everything I taught. Now a days my hands are tied behind my back, and I feel as if the speed in which I have to teach the curriculum, and what is needed to be taught, the tests that need to be given, so that the Art that I once could imbue in my teaching is no longer allowed....it takes too much time away from the NCLB curriculum.
@sorryloginfailed "Math education" does not teach math. It teaches rote calculation. Real mathematics is about developing new structures and tools for approaching problems. It's highly creative. Real scientists spend their time coming up with new frameworks for reality, and finding ways to see if these frameworks really model reality. Coming up with these frameworks is highly creative. True science and math *aren't* taught. Only the final product-- the rote knowledge. Knowledge alone is useless.
From d's and f's as i got older and more critical of the high school system to a football coach at a top soccer school in europe...school makes you think logically and dreams are illogical
Modern education, at least in the USA, is a matter of regurgitating information when it's not outright indoctrination. Any actual "learning" is entirely incidental to the educational process, and is in fact often counter productive because genuine learning tends to make indoctrination rather more difficult...
well of what sort? Am I supposed to alert the Board of Directors that their high education standards squash creativity when my school provides a whole catalouge of electives, such as music, art, sports and drama. I would sound like I have a problem with taking advantages of them. But the one thing that's true is that conformity kills the creative juices among the school population, and that ability in certain subjects don't prove intelligence. A lot of the kids who don't try use this reason.
@SexyRaww It is the purpose of education to raise people who will fill occupations for the sake of money...and so I feel that this is also the undoing of the American spirit. If it becomes devoid of God's principles, even if not entirely based on the Bible, then we have a serious problem. You're talking about kids going through a system, without any real life lessons. So what do we have? Kids with knowledge, but no wisdom to live their lives and perserve this nation.
@hannaremnant True, but you have to consider the consequences of a superbly systematic world in our future. As ken said, people will live in their "left side". This includes loss of purpose, love and the creativity that leads to freedom and truth. If you can't accept your truth that you immensly capable of farming (for example) and instead you choose medicine because you're scared, you won't be happy and you will just waste your life.
@SexyRaww So it is interesting that while the system cannot function without the freedom and flexibility of the human mind (or can it?)-it rewards intelligence measured in a way that does not do human potential justice. When purpose is lost, all sorts of chaos ensues. And what's scarier is there might be a world system that controls the thoughts and lives of students...we have gotten away from what the point of education is. We must re-evaluate the purpose of education -based on human creativity.
@hannaremnant Yes, that's perfectly what I am talking about. The same educational systems that are educating students for the corporate world are controlling the thoughts and lives of students. I see these everywhere, I see it so clearly. I truely believe this is true.
That's why I also believe that education needs to be re-evaluated. Students should be able to express themselves freely, feel no fear of society or society's standards and when this is acheived, so many doors open.
exactly my point. all of these fruity dancers are just programmed to attack anything that doesnt say something like "dance needs to be thought in math class, english class, and homeroom, and spanish class"
they dont have a grasp on how important education is.
i dont know why its a trend to try and make our schools as 3rd world as possible.
first they want to teach religion like its science and then they want to teach dance like it makes mathematics and scientific geniuses
Well, I must say, i don't agree on ur ideals here but i agree with your opinion. Sure, scientists bring more in that sense to the world, but imagine a world without dance, or music, or theatre, it would be boring as hell! The point here with these speeches is to bring the arts into as high a standard as the other subjects, making them equal, not making science and shit lower then they.
Ken Robinson comes on quite strong and is very passionate about it, but I understand his message. Yeah he may seem sort of angry and a blowhard to some but he has his head on his shoulders; the only reason he might seem like a jerk is because he just cares SO much about this. More power to him.
Hi, the brain has two parts, the right and left hemesphere, the left does linear thingking, past and future mathematical intellilgence etc. and the right more to do with music, art, and emotional intelligence. there fore we have been focused on our rational intelligence, the left side of the brain so in order to toad our creativity we need to excersise the other side of the brain. If you observe, will see all sort of intellince people, but emotionaly living the roman tradegies over, and over.
the most creative, influential, and important people in the world were people in the field of science and math.
figuring out dimensions, or the natural forces has nothing to do with dance.
the only person who sees creativity as only being in painting or dancing is probably a fan of painting or dance and doesnt see the world in an unbiased view.
einstein wasnt creative because he knew how to shade colors on a painting and the same goes for Nicola Tesla, thomas edison, and many more
With all due respect, you clearly missed his message. He was not in anyway saying that creativity only comes from art, drama and dance. His argument is that the educational system is only focusing on the science and maths as being the only critically important subjects; when in reality it is imperative for a person to be very well rounded. Those who only focus on math and science are nothing but robots, with no personality or creativity. The most successful people are well rounded.
Ummm okay dude straighten urself out science, ina nd of itself, cannot be creative. Because science is not ORIGINAL. Everything in science is not new, it is just a reincarnation or way of explianing things. Sure, you could argue the lightbulb i creative, but how? Does the sun not give off light? does a lightning bolt not give of light? So how is creating a new source of light creative in that sense? The tesla coil? Hmmm...Pointless anyone? No valua, so again not creative. Stop wasting our time!
wow, i can say a lot of things to you about how your ignorant, but im sure it would be a waste of time.
the tesla coil and the theories behind it are ahead of its time even today, you need to not embarrass yourself and stick to ballet and fag things like that
Esse, I don't do ballet. I do hip-hop, so if u gonna try and insult someone at least attempt to do it right, aitte? And please, explain to me what the tesla coil has done for us positively, how has it helped anyone? My house ain't hooked up to one and no value is placed on one so it is a pointless invention, sure interesting and 'futuristic' or wateva u wanna say but what's the point of it's existence?
Yeah, I am begginner, i been dancing for about 2-3 weeks. And, in case your wondering, my dancing was supposed to be slow and the way it was, i had a bout 5 square feet to dance in,if that alright with you? And sayin' jus cuz I'mma dancer desn't mean i don't know my shit. I been gettin' straight A's since 1st grade man, al the way up until now when i continue to suceed. Cuz I know the chance of me bein a big dncr is pretty small, so i gotta have a backup, I hate school but i still do it.
well my point is that your not gonna be a creative scientist if your a creative dancer, if you want to be a creative scientist you need to practice science, if you can do both then more power to you.
You kind of contradicted yourself by the end there. Science and dance are not mutually exclusive as creative talents. They may not cross borders, but people can be creative at many things.
Arts and science are both very important to culture.
yes yes indeed i undastand now, sorry for being the way i was but u do kind of contradict yourself and put the arts down occasionally when u say things like that. obviuosly u prolly read my other reply, if not, do so now. I do agree sciences and such are important but marking the arts as unimportant? Egh! They are both euqally important in our society. The point is socity seems to put down the arts in skool, sir ken robinson is right, we as a nation are educatingus outof ourcreativity andscience
and you know, you are doing as u say we dncrs are, u jus called us fruity dancers, is that any different then me calling you a stupid scientist? U r putting us down in wat u say, not vice verse
I ain't talkin about ballet and shit man, I'm talking about expression of self through any type of dance. I can sit here and call science girly if u want me too. I'm pointing out A) Ur being a moronic hipocrite at this point and B) Dancing is as important as sciences and such. If u base what's important off what is what u consider manly, then you need to get ur priorities straight esse. That makes no sense what so eva to do that shit. Dancin' can be manly man, it's all about expression asshole.
Ok first you can't claim the moon, it's their, no one owns it, no one is going to dumbass. Second, what's so manly about it? I don't see any testostorone-junkies up in space. Or walkin along the moon. Now, let's look at dance. Krump, fo instance. Almost every krumper or b-boy you'll ever meet is all buffed out and how did u put it?manly' lookin'. Or take i beyond dance into the other arts, like music. Rock=man. Now, whats manly bout watchin crystals or writin math or lookin through a microscope?
you have no clue how valuable the moon is, plus thats like saying claiming parts of earth are dumb.
yea your right exploring the unknown is not manly at all.
i dont care what manly looking guys do it or what rapper says its cool like you do. its pussier than soccer, soccer has manly looking guys but that doesnt make it manly.
science if football dancing is soccer
go to San Fransisco look at all the buffed out guys, theres lots of them and they love to dance and they are gay too.
I almost can't beleive someone as idiotic as u romes this earth. With ur holy than thou attitude man, you'll neva get anywhere. So, soccer isn't manly? So spending your whole life everyday training and conditioning your body and working out isn't manly? Playing for a whole country out of pride for said country isn't manly is what ur tellin me? But, of course, sittin in a lab all day is manly. And so is sittin in a space shuttle. Then again, i do consider astronauts brave men, but scientists?
Not only that, but hmm, lets see...so ur sayin' dancers who push themselves past they're physical limits jus to get a little better aren't manly? Doin wateva u can to reach ur goals isn't manly? That's what ur tellin me? U r bein a total fuckin hipocrite! Listen to urself! Ur comparing opposite ends of s spectrum against eachotha and that's unfair. So, come back with an inteligent response instead of basin your whole opinion on manlyness and come back to me.
dancers are as manly as tennis players who push themselves past their physical limits.
ballet dancers push themselves past physical limits too.
keep doin what you do it doesnt matter to me i dont care, im not gona view dancing as something more than dancing, it doesnt matter how gangsta the music they dance to is or how urban they dress, in short "you can put lipstick on a pig but it will still be a pig" -barack Obama
I can't beleive u r this much of an asshole and a hipocrite. U cannot go thru life basing ur opinions of shit on manlyness becuz manliness doesn't exist! It's a fuckin word used to describe wateva u want. I mean, we all know ur mom's manly and all, no one's arguin (j/p fam, had to throw in a punch line) but seriuosly, that's like callin someone bad at somethin, its perspective homie. Now don't even go there wit dat ghetto shit cuz half these assholes dunno what it's like anyway. oops gotta post
anyway u can't base how important sumthin is on manliness or wateva is what I'm tryin to say. Goin back to what i said earlier, what is more important in LIFE? Arts or Sciences/Math and stuff? niether. With sciences and such and no art we become boring peoples tryin to answer everything in the world, even the unanswerable. Wih just the arts we would become a fun peoples, yet stupid and moronic (not unlike urself). With both, we become a rich peoples, both inteligent and creativity wise.
Yeah, ok. Let's see...who came onto a youtube vdeo jus to post a dick comment? U culd have not watched it esse. Or, maybe yu could have used half ur brain and not commented! Ur the one who was lookin for a fight. Anyone who goes onto a video jus like this in order to disagree it or say somethin u know is gonna agravate people is lookin to start shit. I brought da shit so now u pin it on me. I guess u jus don't like to be proven wrong
i was having a convo with somesone else and more important to me than you
thats when a little sassy dancer came and sassed me like a super sailer.
this convo is over im not reading anything else from you because i can see we are just gonna go in circles
i wasnt proven wrong either but if it helps you think you won i dont mind more power to the danthers go and danth your krumping heart out to tough music so it doesnt look like your gay
And so ends the saga of the bad talking asshole who has only managed to embarras himself through getting pissed at a person online, not their ideas,a person. He must have some heart broken e-feelings guys. Let's give him a thumbs up as a charity prize. *thumbs up*
hmm? wtf? except who your are but understand much it must feel to make someone feel like it? does that even make sense man? And what happened to i'm not readin' anymore of my comments?
It takes creative minds to have an effective ad campaign.
"The ability to think creatively is an essential leadership skill: the creative process brings about change. Often, a leader must act as a catalyst for change. Thus, it is imperative for leaders to learn how to facilitate their own creative thinking, as well as those they work with to bring about productive change (i.e., services, resolution to problems, opportunities, etc.)."
please explain. im sure your just a bleeding heart, but i could be wrong. tell me what makes my idea that teaching science creates scientific creativity moronic?
I believe that ken robinson is right in saying that the current system is taking its toll on human creativity.
Sir Ken Robinson is not talking about not teaching children to read and write, but to keep a good balance.
To apply what you have learned you need a bit of creativity. Everything is interconnected, Sciences and Math are connected to art. From the beats of music to the color produced by paints.
We should train children to be more flexible in order to survive and not rely on a boss
I dare people to take dance or art at the university level and see if any doors whatsoever open up for their careers. All you'll end up is with 40,000 in debt. I think it's not so much about teaching dance, I personally hated the art classes(but that's because I thought I was talentless, no one ever taught me in 10 years of school HOW to improve my artistic talents) and I avoided them. The problem is the format classes are taught, students don't improve or retain anything.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i saw the video... the point was that art and dance was just as imortant as math and science, maybe it was back before the Renaissance but this is the year 2008. japan isnt a superior country because they focus on art and dancing.
this sis an ideology that if we make kids dance and paint they will become better mathmeticians and business owners.
creativity is awesome its one of the best things a person can have, but a country with a failing economy and thats in debt doesnt need to paint dance
I respect your comment, but I disagree. Creativity is essential for science as well, especially in the future. Its creativity that lead to discovery whether in the renaissance or in the recent past. Its totally flawed to always presume that creativity is just to do with the arts and music only.
exactly why your not gonna extract scientific creativity by teaching someone dance or proper shading in a painting.
thats where my argumetn comes from. you want a creative scientist you teach him everything about science, learning "the sound of music" isnt gonna help create a new theory about gravity, or agriculture, or medicine
Actually back in the Renaissance art and music were seen as the equals of maths and science. As for Japan, I think you will find that traditional Japanese art is given importance by the education system there. In addition, many Japanese students study martial arts, notice the use of the word 'art' there.
This is not only about dancing and painting, or playing a musical instrument. It is about creative thinking and I would argue that with the falling economy that is EXACTLY what we need!
martial arts are not painting its physical activity which is proven to be very important. like gym class
if you put physical activity with painting your not good at comparisons.
and we do allow you to dance paint or do a musical instrument in school, so dont act like kids sit in a gray box and study math all day.
and with a failing economy we need to teach economics. a kids creativity with a paintbrush pales in comparison to teaching him economics when it comes to....ECONOMICS!!!
and in the renaissance they would kill people that they thought was a witch. it was common for people to be religious and have no consequences. and in the renaissance there wastn much to learn besides art and agriculture.
im sorry but just because they did it in the dark ages doesnt mean we need to do it now in 2008
so your telling me because people like to listen to music watch television, movies, and because america has the best AV equipment per square mile its important to teach someone interpretive dance and proper shading when painting.
the only reason america can export and create such things is due to out technological advances, which come from science and math.
we built ourselves out of third world country standards because of scientific advancex
As Sir Robinson said, those subjects should *not* be disregarded. But America not only got ahead w/ math & science but by creatively *applying* that knowledge. A good point - Nicola Tesla - an American who knew much about math & science, but also created what many though could not be done with the creative spirit in mind. AC motor, radio, ignition system, etc. W/ creativity some things did not work, but it sprung much. I think it is more than AV is involved in entertainment creativity in US too
let me cut to the chase... do you believe his knowledge about science math and electricity had to do with science math and electricity, or had to do with his childhoods artistic history?
You keep assuming that teaching creativity has everything to do with painting and music.
It's like you are saying Robinson wants to replace math and science with painting and dancing.
Painting is a good way to learn observation and see the details in everything. Maybe if you learned to paint you would notice the points your are missing.
Creativity = The process of original ideas that have value.
Creative thinking is an important process in science and math. I am sure that the first step of every technological advance started with a creative idea.

We should have a right to paint and draw freely and not be punished if we are wrong.

schools teach things in a streamlined manner because less and less jobs are focused on whether you can make a sculpture or if you can do cartwheels or paint. Math and science can be proven and utilized in almost ANY field. The ARTS on the other hand, cannot, despite the oblong and often ridiculous connections and metaphors critics make. Go to college and get a degree in ART history, and you'll be waitering tables for the rest of your life. get a degree in physics, and make 6-figures. do the math
uconnstudent 1 year ago

It all comes down to the individual, and talent.
voispoed 9 months ago
@voispoed I would also like to add that I know of engineers who are armed with PhDs who will not be hired if they don't exhibit the "right stuff" during their interviews. In addition, Sir Ken was introduced at the March 30th lecture by a young female Boeing Engineer who attended a predominately arts-focused University. Boeing is begging our CA education system to focus on the Arts, and restore their importance. This is merely one case of many, so please reconsider your stance on the Arts.

Hi is bang on. I have just started reading Seth Godin's new book Linchpin...it echoes this sentiment exactly. Our business systems are designed to make workers dispensable (replaceable), those that will survive will have creativity, ingenuity and ability to do more than show up and follow instructions. Our schools don't teach that; they suppress it.

how many dancers do you need or have jobs for and do you really need to go to a school to learn to dance?
you certainly need to go to school to learn mathematics, and a subject like mathematics is an incremental subject you keep learning more as go go to higher levels. high school math is just not high enough to be able to do anything like say engineering, you need to keep going further to do that.
rostant999 2 years ago

The public system is fucked because its supposed to be fucked. If they educated everyone and inspired everyone to do what they want, their wouldn't be janitors to clean shit up. The gov has no goal on improving education because if they did everyone would wake up and realize how crappy they have it and upset the power balance of the society. dogs become pigs and the pigs beget sheep and so the toilet water turns around the bowl.
nigel1866 2 years ago
A nicely unfounded perspective. One of the worst things the government could do is limit the pool from which thinkers can originate. Not every janitor is upset with their work or hates their position. Not every janitor has to be a reject of the education system.
agfahadfebasdeggins 2 years ago
Apply affirmative action to schools an academic classes. For example lets say there's a school with math honors classes. The majority of the students are white not by any purpose. So somebody comes along and says there isn't enough ethnicity in those honors classes so they put people who don't meet the requirements into that class effectively dumbing it down. Thats whats wrong with the education system.
nigel1866 2 years ago
nigel you summed up my assessment perfectly. but my conclusion is that creativity is NOT a desirable trait for mass populace. obese vacant consumers are desirable, so long as our chief exports are fiat bills and bombs.
meaningful instruction is intended to be exclusive to the elite... how else are they to stay on top?
of course in my opinion people can clean up their own shit, forget division of labor. hopefully we are in the death throes of the industrial age and into information age finally!

I think you maybe missing one point. He is saying that the system tells people that the only place to search for passion is in specified areas (math and science). In other words, he is not saying that the system makes someone who is meant to be an artist a janitor over a businessman. He is saying that the system makes someone who is meant to be an artist not an artist... and thus that person never really finds true happiness.
magicdice1000 2 years ago
Those that do not value education are not a voice of reason, they are the voice of emotion. I agree that the expression of emotion is important (i.e. the music, dancing and the arts), but what happens when you strip the education system of all things academic? You end up with a ridiculous amount of super emotional people with no life skills who can't take care of themselves. If the world consisted solely of musicians and artists, there would be nobody to clean toilets or serve food or move mail.
Veggieforce 2 years ago
The world will always have the lower classes that will never be an issue. But the point I take from this is that a person who cleans toilets can in fact be happy if they find something else that gives them purpose as well (something that the 'system' doesn't allow them to appreciate: dance for instance)
magicdice1000 2 years ago
who do you think moves the mail and cleans the toilets already? but you do touch on a critical point... putting dance on the same level as english may be a whole new way to dumb down the masses even further
TheElectricHeat 2 years ago
You get what you pay for. Shit in = Shit out. Its shameful that we don't spend more money on education. Teachers have one of the most under-appreciated and under-paid professions in the world. And as far as teachers that "hate" their jobs are concerned, you try dealing with 30 kids every day who love to make your job difficult by acting up, only to have someone tell you that you're not doing a good enough job teaching their children.
Veggieforce 2 years ago
Public education is only meant to help people with the most rudimentary areas of knowledge for functionality in society. You may be the best musician in the world, but if you can't balance a checkbook how will you survive? Last time I checked an Ebmaj7 chord won't land you a high paying career. You have to have some communication and networking skills for that. My point is that we cannot simply say that the system is flawed and blame the teachers of the world.
Veggieforce 2 years ago
We won't have any idea that we enjoy math, science, music, literature etc. unless we are exposed to these subjects in some way or another. If you enjoy something, you pursue it to further your knowledge about it. You seek out other like-minded individuals that posses a greater understanding of a field so that you can absorb what they know and build upon it. Hence the reason that higher education exists. Public education is only meant as a means to educate the masses in a very minimal way.
Veggieforce 2 years ago
People criticize teachers for not doing enough to expand education. I'm tired of hearing people complaining about teachers that don't "teach". First off, you are missing the whole point of this video if that is your perspective. Learning styles are diverse and dynamic. How is a teacher supposed to cater to the educational desires of a classroom of 30 different styles of learning? For that matter, how do people learn that they are interested in a particular subject?
Veggieforce 2 years ago
I agree with him completely! But, on a side note, I am addicted to his catchy theme song! I keep playing the beginning again and again!

Elin48 1 year ago
@sorryloginfailed "Math education" does not teach math. It teaches rote calculation. Real mathematics is about developing new structures and tools for approaching problems. It's highly creative. Real scientists spend their time coming up with new frameworks for reality, and finding ways to see if these frameworks really model reality. Coming up with these frameworks is highly creative. True science and math *aren't* taught. Only the final product-- the rote knowledge. Knowledge alone is useless.

A lot of the kids who don't try use this reason.
hannaremnant 2 years ago 2
@hannaremnant i feel exactly the same way. This world is too fucking close-minded to realize the importance of freedom of thought and creativity.
SexyRaww 1 year ago
@SexyRaww It is the purpose of education to raise people who will fill occupations for the sake of money...and so I feel that this is also the undoing of the American spirit. If it becomes devoid of God's principles, even if not entirely based on the Bible, then we have a serious problem. You're talking about kids going through a system, without any real life lessons. So what do we have? Kids with knowledge, but no wisdom to live their lives and perserve this nation.
hannaremnant 1 year ago
@hannaremnant True, but you have to consider the consequences of a superbly systematic world in our future. As ken said, people will live in their "left side". This includes loss of purpose, love and the creativity that leads to freedom and truth. If you can't accept your truth that you immensly capable of farming (for example) and instead you choose medicine because you're scared, you won't be happy and you will just waste your life.
SexyRaww 1 year ago
@SexyRaww So it is interesting that while the system cannot function without the freedom and flexibility of the human mind (or can it?)-it rewards intelligence measured in a way that does not do human potential justice. When purpose is lost, all sorts of chaos ensues. And what's scarier is there might be a world system that controls the thoughts and lives of students...we have gotten away from what the point of education is. We must re-evaluate the purpose of education -based on human creativity.
hannaremnant 1 year ago
@hannaremnant Yes, that's perfectly what I am talking about. The same educational systems that are educating students for the corporate world are controlling the thoughts and lives of students. I see these everywhere, I see it so clearly. I truely believe this is true.
That's why I also believe that education needs to be re-evaluated. Students should be able to express themselves freely, feel no fear of society or society's standards and when this is acheived, so many doors open.
SexyRaww 1 year ago
YES!!! So much work instead of fun.

The point here with these speeches is to bring the arts into as high a standard as the other subjects, making them equal, not making science and shit lower then they.

the most creative, influential, and important people in the world were people in the field of science and math.
figuring out dimensions, or the natural forces has nothing to do with dance.
the only person who sees creativity as only being in painting or dancing is probably a fan of painting or dance and doesnt see the world in an unbiased view.
einstein wasnt creative because he knew how to shade colors on a painting and the same goes for Nicola Tesla, thomas edison, and many more
ragnar336 3 years ago
ragnar336,
With all due respect, you clearly missed his message. The most successful people are well rounded.

r u a big retard ragnar336?
obviously you are wrong, read your stuff over. thanks.
SpicyHam 3 years ago
Ummm okay dude straighten urself out science, ina nd of itself, cannot be creative. Because science is not ORIGINAL. Everything in science is not new, it is just a reincarnation or way of explianing things. Sure, you could argue the lightbulb i creative, but how? Does the sun not give off light? does a lightning bolt not give of light? So how is creating a new source of light creative in that sense? The tesla coil? Hmmm...Pointless anyone? No valua, so again not creative. Stop wasting our time!
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
wow, i can say a lot of things to you about how your ignorant, but im sure it would be a waste of time.
the tesla coil and the theories behind it are ahead of its time even today, you need to not embarrass yourself and stick to ballet and fag things like that
ragnar336 3 years ago 2
Esse, I don't do ballet. I do hip-hop, so if u gonna try and insult someone at least attempt to do it right, aitte? And please, explain to me what the tesla coil has done for us positively, how has it helped anyone? My house ain't hooked up to one and no value is placed on one so it is a pointless invention, sure interesting and 'futuristic' or wateva u wanna say but what's the point of it's existence?
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
and the tesla coil is to this day teaching us about physics, something a fruity dancer wouldnt understand.
and i watched your videos... i hope your still in the beginner phase because it was some slow non confident crap
and its too far ahead of its time and our own. we still havent been able to create a power source that can keep the system running within reason
ragnar336 3 years ago
Yeah, I am begginner, i been dancing for about 2-3 weeks. And, in case your wondering, my dancing was supposed to be slow and the way it was, i had a bout 5 square feet to dance in,if that alright with you? And sayin' jus cuz I'mma dancer desn't mean i don't know my shit. I been gettin' straight A's since 1st grade man, al the way up until now when i continue to suceed. Cuz I know the chance of me bein a big dncr is pretty small, so i gotta have a backup, I hate school but i still do it.
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
well my point is that your not gonna be a creative scientist if your a creative dancer, if you want to be a creative scientist you need to practice science, if you can do both then more power to you.
ragnar336 3 years ago
You kind of contradicted yourself by the end there. Science and dance are not mutually exclusive as creative talents. They may not cross borders, but people can be creative at many things.
Arts and science are both very important to culture.
Merjey 3 years ago
"Arts and science are both very important to culture."
where did i say anything disagreeing with that?
and where did i say that people cant be creative outside of science and dance?
im not trying to fight whith you but i don't think you got what i was saying
ragnar336 3 years ago
yes yes indeed i undastand now, sorry for being the way i was but u do kind of contradict yourself and put the arts down occasionally when u say things like that. obviuosly u prolly read my other reply, if not, do so now. I do agree sciences and such are important but marking the arts as unimportant? Egh! They are both euqally important in our society. The point is socity seems to put down the arts in skool, sir ken robinson is right, we as a nation are educatingus outof ourcreativity andscience
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
and you know, you are doing as u say we dncrs are, u jus called us fruity dancers, is that any different then me calling you a stupid scientist? U r putting us down in wat u say, not vice verse
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
i apologize. dancing is very manly
ragnar336 3 years ago
I ain't talkin about ballet and shit man, I'm talking about expression of self through any type of dance. I can sit here and call science girly if u want me too. I'm pointing out A) Ur being a moronic hipocrite at this point and B) Dancing is as important as sciences and such. If u base what's important off what is what u consider manly, then you need to get ur priorities straight esse. That makes no sense what so eva to do that shit. Dancin' can be manly man, it's all about expression asshole.
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
yea you can call science girly but whats girly about exploring outer space? and claiming the moon?
ragnar336 3 years ago
Ok first you can't claim the moon, it's their, no one owns it, no one is going to dumbass. Second, what's so manly about it? I don't see any testostorone-junkies up in space. Or walkin along the moon. Now, let's look at dance. Krump, fo instance. Almost every krumper or b-boy you'll ever meet is all buffed out and how did u put it?manly' lookin'. Or take i beyond dance into the other arts, like music. Rock=man. Now, whats manly bout watchin crystals or writin math or lookin through a microscope?
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
you have no clue how valuable the moon is, plus thats like saying claiming parts of earth are dumb.
yea your right exploring the unknown is not manly at all.
i dont care what manly looking guys do it or what rapper says its cool like you do. its pussier than soccer, soccer has manly looking guys but that doesnt make it manly.
science if football dancing is soccer
go to San Fransisco look at all the buffed out guys, theres lots of them and they love to dance and they are gay too.
ragnar336 3 years ago
I almost can't beleive someone as idiotic as u romes this earth. With ur holy than thou attitude man, you'll neva get anywhere. So, soccer isn't manly? So spending your whole life everyday training and conditioning your body and working out isn't manly? Playing for a whole country out of pride for said country isn't manly is what ur tellin me? But, of course, sittin in a lab all day is manly. And so is sittin in a space shuttle. Then again, i do consider astronauts brave men, but scientists?
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
Not only that, but hmm, lets see...so ur sayin' dancers who push themselves past they're physical limits jus to get a little better aren't manly? Doin wateva u can to reach ur goals isn't manly? That's what ur tellin me? U r bein a total fuckin hipocrite! Listen to urself! Ur comparing opposite ends of s spectrum against eachotha and that's unfair. So, come back with an inteligent response instead of basin your whole opinion on manlyness and come back to me.
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
dancers are as manly as tennis players who push themselves past their physical limits.
ballet dancers push themselves past physical limits too.
keep doin what you do it doesnt matter to me i dont care, im not gona view dancing as something more than dancing, it doesnt matter how gangsta the music they dance to is or how urban they dress, in short "you can put lipstick on a pig but it will still be a pig" -barack Obama
ragnar336 3 years ago
I can't beleive u r this much of an asshole and a hipocrite. U cannot go thru life basing ur opinions of shit on manlyness becuz manliness doesn't exist! It's a fuckin word used to describe wateva u want. I mean, we all know ur mom's manly and all, no one's arguin (j/p fam, had to throw in a punch line) but seriuosly, that's like callin someone bad at somethin, its perspective homie. Now don't even go there wit dat ghetto shit cuz half these assholes dunno what it's like anyway. oops gotta post
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
anyway u can't base how important sumthin is on manliness or wateva is what I'm tryin to say.
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
yea im stupid whos the one who started this cool internet fight?
you started sassing me like a sassy little dancer, hahahahaha
ragnar336 3 years ago
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
i was having a convo with somesone else and more important to me than you
thats when a little sassy dancer came and sassed me like a super sailer.
this convo is over im not reading anything else from you because i can see we are just gonna go in circles
i wasnt proven wrong either but if it helps you think you won i dont mind more power to the danthers go and danth your krumping heart out to tough music so it doesnt look like your gay
ragnar336 3 years ago
And so ends the saga of the bad talking asshole who has only managed to embarras himself through getting pissed at a person online, not their ideas,a person. He must have some heart broken e-feelings guys. Let's give him a thumbs up as a charity prize. *thumbs up*
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
you explained yourself... then pinned it on me.
i was told people like you would never except who your are but understand much it must feel to make someone feel like it... hmmm any red flags yet?
ragnar336 3 years ago
hmm? wtf? except who your are but understand much it must feel to make someone feel like it? does that even make sense man? And what happened to i'm not readin' anymore of my comments?
KaiIllDNCR 3 years ago
dont even worry about it
ragnar336 3 years ago
Why don't you both go back to school and learn to spell? If schools kill creativity, then the internet is killing grammar.
PoeticJustice05 3 years ago 3
its as stupid as saying the president should be artistic in order to be elected.
trust me we would still be using rocks if it wasnt for scientific creativity.
you cant teach creativity
ragnar336 3 years ago
Teaching drama compliments public speaking.
It takes creative minds to have an effective ad campaign.
"The ability to think creatively is an essential leadership skill: the creative process brings about change. Often, a leader must act as a catalyst for change. Thus, it is imperative for leaders to learn how to facilitate their own creative thinking, as well as those they work with to bring about productive change (i.e., services, resolution to problems, opportunities, etc.)."
rokhopr 3 years ago
you are a moron did you kno that ragnar336?
SpicyHam 3 years ago
please explain. im sure your just a bleeding heart, but i could be wrong. tell me what makes my idea that teaching science creates scientific creativity moronic?
ragnar336 3 years ago
I believe that ken robinson is right in saying that the current system is taking its toll on human creativity.
Sir Ken Robinson is not talking about not teaching children to read and write, but to keep a good balance.
To apply what you have learned you need a bit of creativity. Everything is interconnected, Sciences and Math are connected to art. From the beats of music to the color produced by paints.
We should train children to be more flexible in order to survive and not rely on a boss
commanderjaygold 3 years ago
I dare people to take dance or art at the university level and see if any doors whatsoever open up for their careers. All you'll end up is with 40,000 in debt. I think it's not so much about teaching dance, I personally hated the art classes(but that's because I thought I was talentless, no one ever taught me in 10 years of school HOW to improve my artistic talents) and I avoided them. The problem is the format classes are taught, students don't improve or retain anything.

i saw the video... the point was that art and dance was just as imortant as math and science, maybe it was back before the Renaissance but this is the year 2008. japan isnt a superior country because they focus on art and dancing.
this sis an ideology that if we make kids dance and paint they will become better mathmeticians and business owners.
creativity is awesome its one of the best things a person can have, but a country with a failing economy and thats in debt doesnt need to paint dance
ragnar336 3 years ago
Way to totally miss the point.
shockboner 3 years ago
I respect your comment, but I disagree. Creativity is essential for science as well, especially in the future. Its creativity that lead to discovery whether in the renaissance or in the recent past. Its totally flawed to always presume that creativity is just to do with the arts and music only.
js2010uk 3 years ago
exactly why your not gonna extract scientific creativity by teaching someone dance or proper shading in a painting.
thats where my argumetn comes from. you want a creative scientist you teach him everything about science, learning "the sound of music" isnt gonna help create a new theory about gravity, or agriculture, or medicine
ragnar336 3 years ago
Actually back in the Renaissance art and music were seen as the equals of maths and science. As for Japan, I think you will find that traditional Japanese art is given importance by the education system there. In addition, many Japanese students study martial arts, notice the use of the word 'art' there.
This is not only about dancing and painting, or playing a musical instrument. It is about creative thinking and I would argue that with the falling economy that is EXACTLY what we need!
simonhorsey 3 years ago
martial arts are not painting its physical activity which is proven to be very important. like gym class
if you put physical activity with painting your not good at comparisons.
and we do allow you to dance paint or do a musical instrument in school, so dont act like kids sit in a gray box and study math all day.
and with a failing economy we need to teach economics. a kids creativity with a paintbrush pales in comparison to teaching him economics when it comes to....ECONOMICS!!!
continued..
ragnar336 3 years ago
.. continuing
and in the renaissance they would kill people that they thought was a witch. it was common for people to be religious and have no consequences. and in the renaissance there wastn much to learn besides art and agriculture.
im sorry but just because they did it in the dark ages doesnt mean we need to do it now in 2008
ragnar336 3 years ago
Economics was the most boring subject in high school. If my teacher was more creative in his teaching process I would have learned something.
Robinson does not only talk about teaching creativity, he also talks about creative teaching.
rokhopr 3 years ago
Why is it then that entertainment is now the #1 export in the US?
RobMilliken 3 years ago
so your telling me because people like to listen to music watch television, movies, and because america has the best AV equipment per square mile its important to teach someone interpretive dance and proper shading when painting.
the only reason america can export and create such things is due to out technological advances, which come from science and math.
we built ourselves out of third world country standards because of scientific advancex
ragnar336 3 years ago
As Sir Robinson said, those subjects should *not* be disregarded. But America not only got ahead w/ math & science but by creatively *applying* that knowledge. A good point - Nicola Tesla - an American who knew much about math & science, but also created what many though could not be done with the creative spirit in mind. AC motor, radio, ignition system, etc. W/ creativity some things did not work, but it sprung much. I think it is more than AV is involved in entertainment creativity in US too
RobMilliken 3 years ago
yea he was a creative person. teaching him art or more music isnt what led him to be creative in the realm of science.
you cant teach creativity
ragnar336 3 years ago
let me cut to the chase... do you believe his knowledge about science math and electricity had to do with science math and electricity, or had to do with his childhoods artistic history?
ragnar336 3 years ago
ragnar336,
Are you even reading the replies?
You keep assuming that teaching creativity has everything to do with painting and music.
It's like you are saying Robinson wants to replace math and science with painting and dancing.
Painting is a good way to learn observation and see the details in everything. Maybe if you learned to paint you would notice the points your are missing.
rokhopr 3 years ago
Creativity = The process of original ideas that have value.
Creative thinking is an important process in science and math. I am sure that the first step of every technological advance started with a creative idea.
