It's clear she did care about success; she didn't care about fame. There is a difference. When she'd had enough of success she walked away from the fame and never looked back.
@musicallyspeakings88 Yes and such a pity that she retired at 27! What a waste of a marvellous talent but I'm sure she had her reasons, probably to do with the fact that Hollywood wanted her to do nothing but singing roles and she wanted to act.
I love this aria and her voice. I'm not so sure if Mimi would have suited her. Mimi would have been great for her personality but Musetta is better for her when it comes to voice. Musetta is supposed be sung in a light manner like this. For Mimi you would need much more power and depth. Then again, Musetta would not have suited her personality and innocence. Tough choice. :=) I guess I'm one of those younger opera snobs. ;=)
In boheme she would have been a fab mimi..musetta is too rauchy for her style of voice..id loved to hear her in the det with rudolfo in act one and the great quartet in act three..and im sure that her act 4 as a dying mimi would have brought tears to my eyes.
An Angle upon the earth. She could have had the universe at her feet, rather than the world. She was that good. I bet she still is, if she's still alive. I hope she is. She's the iceing on the cake. She's the glitter that's gold. Love you Dianna
@claycmi Deanna is going to be 89 Dec 4th. She lives in Paris ,will not do interviews but will answer fan mail. Watch her on You Tube when she was 13. 75 years later Jackie Evancho came. We see aDeanna Durbin only once every 3 or 4 generations. Deana simply put was the very best!
I may be an opera lover, which is not a snob or a purist, and I love good singing. Musetta's Waltz was written to be airy, seductive, coquettish: this is a marvelous version, with great warmth, vocal color and heart. Bravo, Ms. Durbin: put me down as your newest fan.
I love Deanna Durbin! I recieved her sweethear 6 pack of movies as a Christmas present and my wife and I sat and watched each of the siz movies in that pack, one night after another. I would have loved to have her sing that in a staged opera of "Boheme".Bravp, diva Deanna! the Canadian songbird.
Dedico esto al maestro Ernesto Lecuona recordando cuando la bella Deanna ( Canada ) interpreto" Tu estas en mi Corazon "en una pelicula. "You are always in my heart"
I'm just discovering Deanna Durbin and I have just fallen in love with her. I wish she had done staged opera. Musetta is a great role for her, and she would have also sung and acted the role of Mimi in due time. Gosh! Can you imagine what she would have done with that role in "Boheme"? Singing Mimi to Jan Pearce's or Richard Tucker's Rudolpho. On stage at the Met! Wow!
I only came across Deanna, as I am a big fan of Kiri te Kanawa's. I know that Kiri was trained to sound like Deanna. When I hear Deanna singing, she sounds exactly like Kiri. Both singers are loved by the public and bring tears to your eyes.
I've always loved Deanna. She's God's gift to us. We don't get many gifts from God that we can see, and hear. Other than this beautiful earth. She's one of a kind.
And today she is 90 living in Paris!

Deanna, you are more perfect than the big names of today. Effortless, silky, on top all the way through. Ah, what an adorable creature.

extremely well managed for a non operatic singer but non operatic: she's doing well in this movie, she wouldn't do in a theatre

This aria: Netrebko or Durbin ?
kngiht84 4 years ago
Anna Netrebko is only about 36. This film was released in 1940. Of course, you were only joking.
Bish29 4 years ago 2
I wasn't joking, I meant who performed this aria better ?
kngiht84 4 years ago
Lucine Amara is the answer to that question.
Cenayon 3 years ago
Durbin has better technique. It's a lighter, brighter voice, though..very different from Trebbers
fundfreq 3 years ago 2
Durbin sounds much more relaxed. Netrebko sounds almost starch in comparison.

She was offered a king's ransom at a very young age my the met-but opera as a career was not on her wish list. She would have been great!
