  • Well done, lerb21. Please scrub your fingernails.

  • Really nice job on the vid...as good as any out there for this song and way better than most. I've been pickin this song for many years at gigs...most people try to shortcut the lead because they can't get it...you got it man...good job. I personally play a Nashville Tele through a Peavey Bandit Transtube as my main gigging rig. I can pull Luther and Don Rich style sound or even Roy Nichols stuff [Haggard] out of it and most folks like it. Good Job!

  • Great lesson on that song!

  • I honestly can't bear to listen to Johnny Cash, but when I hear bands cover a few of his songs they become catchy and stuck in my head, now I have a better understanding of how to play this. Thanks man, you did a great job.

  • How is your guitar tuned? A half step up?

  • haha add me on skype dukeefron

  • the snap shots of tab in this is a really good idea!

  • niiicee clean sound you got there dude

  • Is there any possibility of finding a pedal, that would do the same work as this does without paying 400€???

  • Nice lesson man. Im going to have to study a bit and work on the way I play it after seeing this.

  • thanks your lesson is very useful. very simple and clear. and those who say that a woman can play, well i can

  • it´s like to hear the man play straight off the record

  • this is a guitar lesson at last!!! ;) thanks

  • one great lesson. no one on here shows how to play this the correct way like you have.well done

  • Good lesson

  • Super it's very clear!!!

    Thks

  • There's the trick to great guitar playing - have tentacles in place of your fingers!

    Gr8 job :)

  • haha i didnt realize how old this video was until i saw that the tele isnt sparkled

  • i can tell by your fat ugly sausage fingers that you beat off into your cats face on a regular basis, which means we must fight to the death CAUSE THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE HIGH LANDER!!!!!

  • @IHugFatKids13

Blimey,Richard ashcroft and The verve were right,,,,,,,,the drugs dont work !!!!!!

  • Crap.....I've been playing it wrong for years. Thanks for clearing it up for me. Seriously, great playing.

  • I think Luther didn't use that Esquire and that Super Reverb at that time. Think he had a Silvertone amp and a blonde Esquire. Correct me if i'm wrong, please.

  • Did anyone else notice the fucking choo choo train wall paper around the closet door

  • That was a damn good lesson bra

  • im sorry to bother you but are you palm muteing in the beggining.

  • I really got a lot from your style teaching, thank you very much!

  • Thanks --great lesson--I learn something new every day...

    5*

    --Van

  • the height hurts;)

  • Thanks for the help dude'

  • Well done!!

  • This is very good ...and an excellent well explained. Perhaps Jackson of J. Cash?

  • Great Lesson man =D So nice sound :D

  • this is like my third time wachin this vid, i noticed a wile back when people play this song they play it in E tuning, DIdnt Luther play it in F, because thats how i play it

  • Nice work. Thanks

  • what kind of guitar is that and about how much does it cost

  • It's an Esquire, the precessor of the telecaster it's about 550 €, dont bother counting it over into dollars. Its basically a tele with just the bridge pickup, and a little bit different wireing. Google it and you will find out :)

  • FUCKING NICE MAN!!!!!!!! :D

  • safe as fuck man

    lovely

  • Shit hot, Well done. Im not a big country fan but i do love this song.

  • @Stringyheads I am not a big country fan either, but Johnny Cash is such a bad ass that he is really in a genre of his own. I also think that old country is much better than the new crap they are pumping out. There is and always will be only one Johnny Cash.

  • hi lerb, i think you've done a pretty good job teaching the song man you have great fluidity and i now know the little changes ive been searching for so thanks you take care now. martin cheers

  • heyman nice youre really good at that song and i wanna know how you play like that.if you dont mind could you send me the tab you are using?so i can learn it?

  • Click on the link provided during the video to get a much more in depth lesson. It's simple enough that you shouldn't need tabs.

  • great lesson!!! very great!!!

  • probably the best lesson on the internet. I didn't expect the solo, so that was a bonus. thanks a lot for this, a BIG help.

  • Your guitar is tuned up 1/2 step so you can play along with the recording. Floyd rose nightmare!

Thanks for the help with this song! You play it perfectly.

  • Awesome lesson Clinton!

  • hey lerb, don't make a shit what he says, I like the video, and you did a good job with Folsom Prison. And I love that "how bout I just call you an asshole" part. hehe, sounds a lot like something I'd say!

  • NICE MAN!

  • i dont really care if he is playing the guitar or not, but he calls this video a "lesson" while the only help for those who wanna learn it, ist to show his left hand. man, a lesson is more than a video of your left hand

  • Anything that teaches someone something can be considered a "lesson".

How about I just call you an "Asshole" and we'll be done?

  • hehe, sure, the answer is as poor as the video ;-)

  • You're right, the video sucks. That's why it's closing in on 250k views with an average rating of 4.3 stars.

By the way, did you even view the tabs to this? Or the several other video I have on this song? No, I suppose you didn't.

  • Oh of course I had a look at the tabs to the song.

And no, i haven't watched your other videos.

When I read "FULL lesson" I suppose that this is all.

I see you are totaly disabled to handle criticism so why to go on talking?

All I say is that a lesson takes also some explanation.

  • The rating is for the skilled guitar playing i guess, and that's right, it's played really good, I've read some comments of people who think it's not really you playing, as I said before, I dont care about it. But for sure the rating ist not for the explanation which -at all- doesn't exist.

By the way, this is my last response on this. I only wanted to say, that a lesson takes more than a "look how great i'm playing". That's it.

Now you can call me whatever you want to

  • First, off, let me say that I'm glad that you're not the typical run of the mill youtube asshole that we've all encountered so much. Having said that, sorry about the "asshole" comment.

Allow me to elaborate as to why I carried out the video as is.

I've done lessons where I slow things down and audibly tell you what to play. Those lessons normally elicit a response along the lines of "TABS PLZ".

Not wanting to deal with that, I decided to simply write it out and post it with the video.

  • In the video description, the first thing I typed two years ago was "at least I consider it a lesson."

The "Full" is a indicator that the lesson is geared towards the complete song.

I say that the explanation lies in the Tab that so many people desire. You may not consider it a full lesson, but many on here do. I'm catering.

  • I know, before I said I wouldn't respond anymore, but you made me change my mind.

You're right. Sorry to have pissed you off, I had a bad day yesterday. At least you made a video which is thought to help people who wanna learn the song, you did it without being paid for it and so I really have no reason to bother you.

  • Meanwhile I haid a look at your other videos.

And it's true, you're doing a lot of explanation in your other lessons.

It's great that some guitar-dudes are doing this video lessons so also people like me can learn to play some songs.

I hope you will go on to do so and I wanna repeat that I'm really sorry for the bullshit I was posting yesterday.

    Greetings Xyrus

  • @lerb21 This is the best lesson, dude. People who can't decipher this should probably go back to the basics of guitar.

  • Man. Thanks for the lesson. Let those that are ignorant remain ignorant.

  • thats good man I like

  • his playing with the guitar tuned 1/2 step up

  • Sweet camo shirt ...

  • you can fool some people buddy but not stevo how stupid do you think us guitar dudes are not even plugged in

  • i got more practice to do. thanks for video

  • thanks !!!

  • Excellent work!!

    Well done!

  • um. yes not really even playing the guitar

  • Yes, He is playing the guitar. He just removed the original guitar from the song. Don't say stuff that you have no knowledge of.

  • i thought you were excellent lerb21 .....very talented ......thanks for posting i am going to try and learn that one......keep posting

  • Excellent and that's why you have a half million hits.

  • write a million in numbers for me, please . . I wanna see what you make of it

  • I dunno what you all are cryin' about if you know the song what do you care- I didn't and this helped me I almost got it so I say good job and thanks I just tuned up half a step-Pro do it all the time even though down or drop d is more common in the tunes I play Good Job lerb and thanks

  • just watched this and i agree with stevo660 this cock is not even playin he's just movin his fingers to the sound of johnny cash get a life and learn the song u fuckin loser.

  • Yeah, either that or I recorded the audio with a separate microphone and spliced it together in windows movie maker, being off by about half a second, making the video and audio not sync perfectly.

But wait, that makes too much sense.

  • i hope ur all kiddin me he's not even strumming with the song and its played in f sharp or put ur capo on the second frett

  • Like I said prior, I recorded the audio with a good mic. It puts it on a separate track. When I lined up the audio and video it was off by about half a second.

The song is in F, not F sharp. Johnny Cash and TT3 tuned up slightly above F, so it wasn't F 440. They fingered the song in E, like I am doing, because I tuned my guitar up to.

Think I'm lying? Go watch the Town Hall Party videos. They're playing in F but they finger it in E.

  • You are an idiot, stevo660. Its not in F sharp, Its just in F. And you'd put the capo the first fret. I swear. And he is playing the guitar in this one.

  • How can I get a copy of the track that you played along with in this video??????

  • This is the actual live version from the Live at Folsom Prison Album. It isn't to hard to find so that one may purchase it. Once you have the MP3, you play the song through only one of the speakers, I can't remember which. Since it is stereo, you remove the guitar and a lot of the drums, but keep Johnny's vocals, acoustic guitar, and bass.

  • No problem. Glad to help.

  • F Bb Eb Ab C F

  • what are you using to record your video; a webcam or a camcorder and what model?

  • the guitar is transposed up a half step to play it in open F

  • Easy to play a great guitar, great players could play a box and string

  • Great player with a great guitar. This is the best FPB lesson i've ever heard

  • don't know if it's been said but the tabs to the e chord riff are wrong . Guitar playing is perfect, but the tabs show two beats on the d string when it should be on the A

  • oook, now i get it!!! sorry!!!

  • how do you make the b chord? sorry, i just don't get it

  • its a b7 on here and its very easy, google it ull see a picture.

  • well weirdly i understood that it semmed a lot easier and well thabks a lot "i hear the train a coming"

  • posted a blues version

  • Great video. But I am confused by the solo. You have in the tabs 8-10 then 7-10. There are no E notes there. How is this an E chord?

  • that's a 8 hammer to 9, followed by 7-10.

The 'E' chord title is to demonstrate what your playing over the 'E' chord, not saying that it is, in fact, an 'E' chord.

    Thank you by the way.

  • its actually 9 hammer to 10 then 8-11. it sounds right to me

  • Not if you are tuned up, which is how I'm teaching it.

  • youre a really good player. wish i was good enough to understand the lesson part

  • check out my newer video, it has a better camera angle and I walk you through step by step. A lot easier to understand than this.

  • good lesson

  • nicely done will be using this to learn the song if ya don't mind,.... thanks

  • Thanks for the awesome video, what a professional layout of that song. Wish you best of luck!!!! Thanks so much!!!

  • best material on this song there is to be found

  • Lerb, that was a good job.

Btw. what pleck did you use ? Dunlop 40 ?

  • Fender Medium.

  • hey man good stuff ive been using ur video to practice daily...

question though... when ur playing the 'A' Chords in the chorus part, wat strings are you hiting for each 'A' Chord?

(not the 5-2-2.. but which strings u pickin wen u have those held down?)

  • the way I play it on that day was like this. (naming the strings) g b e b g.

    Hope this helps.

  • the 'picture'' of the amp looks like a Marc Rothko painting.

  • cool

  • hey man, i love ur luther tutorials. ur real up on ur facts, i like that. would you do a picking video, on how you pick. i have the usual e a d a e a d a picking down but i wanna know how you play it... thanks man

    dustin

  • is it in F?

  • Yes, but Johnny tuned up the chord slightly. It was almost an F 1/2. halfway between and F and F#.

  • great job man! thanks

  • excellent...

  • great job

  • You really knocked it out of the ball park on this one. Great lesson, Best I have ever seen on Folsem. Thanks and please keep em comming.

  • awsome playing, sucky video

  • it almost sounds more like a bassline at some parts.. but none the less i like how u play it

  • Thanx for the lesson i learned a lot. Nice guitar by the way.

  • Great job, I liked how you got the reverb just right... Is there another way to get the reverb close to this without the expensive foot pedal? I'm kinda new to this, also, I liked the visual on the runs. Thanks again !

  • thanks for posting this! I especially dig the diagrams

  • pretty good

  • its a half step down????

  • I quote from my own comment that you can see on the first page...

    "Tuned up half a step."

  • wow! excellent dude... 5stars

  • Nice clean sound. I'm jealous of your set up. And tuck that thumb back behind the neck for cryin out loud! =)

  • Not a chance, I use it when I do more complex stuff. ;)

    Thanks.

  • Very well done. Are you useing Flat wound strings? I thought it kinda looked like it. Once again very nicely done along with tab. Now thats how alot more songs should be done.

    Super job.

  • Na, some kinda Fenders... can't remember... think they were 10's.

  • beutifold guitar playing

  • Very very niice cover, and lesson ..

But what tune is the guitar in ? Drop d ?

  • Tuned up half a step.

  • just palm mute and pluck strings 5 4 6 over and over again on an E Chord

  • Hey man good job. I just made a cover im 13 years old and i think i did decent. Cheak it out! =D

  • He starts the tune in b7

  • great playing but do you have the tab correct for picking the E chord?

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • dude check mike lauze as johnny cash i could have used u there lol. shit son ur a good guitar player

  • Thanks man, I shure would've helped you out in any case.

  • awesome playing hoss...thanks for the lesson. I think Luther and Carl would be VERY proud of you. Maybe a little envious of your skill. Thanks.

  • Lol thanks. I doubt I'm as good as those guys though.

  • You are very good with this, I am still learning Luthers ways with the guitar. My instructor has me play the the harmony with the strings muted.(your video at 2:30) Have you ever played it that way?

  • No, I haven't, but I'll whats this is all about.

  • my son Phillip learned it from your lesson...thank you very much...Uli

  • No problem my friend. It's just great to get all the feedback from you guys and thanks again.

  • you rock

  • Thank you.

  • GREAT lesson...I've learned much and thanks

  • No problem. Glad to help.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the video. I like your solo interpretation a lot, and that's a sound to die for. I really struggle to get that kind of stacatto sound, so it is a pleasure to hear.

  • Fender's are great guitar's, Rest in peace Luther and Johnny.

  • DAMN DUDE, YER KICK DICK!

  • genial

  • awesome, thanks for the lesson. Been learning a lot of cash's music.

  • great video, by far the best how to video.

  • Nice one, thanks for postin'

Luther and Johnny are playin again in heaven I bet!

    Cheers man.

  • nice lesson.. No I see how the cash-gallop is played

  • uhm i could be wrong but at this concert it wasn't luther play guitar it was bob woton i beileve luther was dead at this time but no doubt bob played it the same way as luther

  • No, I'm 100% sure that it was Luther. Luther died in August of 68, while Folsom was recorded in January of 68.

  • no one can touch luthers style of picking and Luther Perkins did play at Folsom Prison if u dont beleve me look at the pictures

  • Oh yes he did

  • San Quentin was with Bob Wotten.

  • DUDE,

This is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been playing for years and know a great musician when I hear one, and I just heard one! Thank you so much for sharing this lesson with us - I'd set at your feet and learn any time my friend.

  • Thank you. I am honestly not that good, I just spend a lotta time learning these as close as possible and try to post them so you guys don't have to spend hours trying to figure them out.

  • ok i didnt really no but dude u got some talent i got a fender strat and i try and do that its just not the same now ur guitar is that the same as a telacaster
