  • She is absolutely wonderful.

  • Well what can you say then other that she is beautiful and a great talent. This was a marvelous performance. I have known about Sumi Jo for many years. I have the first CD that was available of her talent in the US. She has just become even better with the passing of time. BRAVO!

  • A performance of infinite quality. A stunning looker with a beautiful generosity of spirit. If you ever read comments on your YouTube videos Sumi Jo, please know that I am totally smitten.

I unashsmedly love you Sumi Jo. X

  • ¡Qué voz!

  • wow

  • Love it especially starting at 1:38

  • I can't believe in exactly 12 hours, I will be in spitting distance of my idol, my inspiration, my diva who I have been following for 5 years!

  • I was born in 1995 :)

  • LQQinkbk, Mezzo????? U are obviously ignorant when it comes to vocal fach

  • She's not human! She is AWESOME.

  • Impresionante.

  • my gosh i love her.

  • amazing!!!

  • lol i dropped my headphone when hear it

  • this version is good enough but 2001 is so much better. god damn she improved a lot!

  • Amazing voice and beautiful piece.... Love it!!!!

  • Oh, I love her voice!

  • @LQQKINBK Sincerely, I cant believe your words. If you came here to advertise for Mrs Gruberova, those who love opera know her already. I find your commentary unspeakable, biased and judgmental.

  • @LQQKINBK Are you deaf...? Her voice is divine.

  • @LQQKINBK Try this. youtube. c o m / watch?v=DyjfsxxIY1g

  • @smoothiw I did listen to the link you sent. Beautiful emotional interpretation, however, I just hear struggles in her voice on the technical side. It still sounds like she's rehearsing the piece and learning it rather than the final product. In my humble opinion, she's not a coloratura... the agility and lightness just isn't there. She would make one hell of a mezzo. I think her voice is strongest in that range of repertoire.

  • @LQQKINBK I've obviously heard many more renditions which cause me a cringe a bit.....this isn't one of them. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the warmth in her voice. I do love Dessay's version, but I'm happy to listen to any of these greats and just marvel at the instrument and their skill.

  • Yes rotcehra. She came from a Star far away. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE!

  • This is the first time I had to change earphones from inner-ear to expensive headphones to get the quality of music. WOW.

  • What a fantastic artist! I feel good all over when I hear this woman sing!

  • I am just a little curious... isn't it wrong that her veins showed in the high pitch? 1:02 min. I don't know which note it's, I am just starting solfeggio and i am not really good (b-but ia m not giving up yet).

I am just thinking that neck looks like tense, but might be i am wrong... Can someone who knows about this topic reply?

  • @SakumaRyuichiNG maybe it's because she turned around?@_@

  • I really can't stand these comparisons that simply don't make sense. Sumi Jo is a beautiful artist in her own right. Comparing her to Sutherland or Callas is not fair. I saw her in Rigoletto at the Met with Alfredo Kraus and they were both spectacular!

  • @Dymension I absolutely agree... The comparisons in order to deem who is best rather than to appreciate each vocalist's own stylings and giftings are so out of line.

  • How old is she now !?!?!?!

  • Do they sing without microphones?

  • @LaSerpentaCanta Yes. Opera singers have to be able to sing over an orchestra without amplification.

  • @SakuraMochiKitty no all of theatre have amplification in front of stage, even Calls sang with mike in her concert. cheque the Calls DVDs released by EMI. even in 1960s photo you can see the mike in La scalla. and where the newest amplification equipment used for the first time is opera house. and don't imagine that 19th century people heard singers' voice without any difficulty. the situation was really bad. but they had no choice.

  • @icylakepaxphile Oh, I didn't know that. I've been hearing from opera singers-in-training that an opera singer needed to be able to project their voice across a large opera house without amplification. o:

  • @SakuraMochiKitty and they must have had more sensitive auditory sense just like premitive people than modern people. because before the discovery of electricty. the michanical noise must be more less than now..

  • What an incredibly beautiful voice.

  • Just finished watching mildred pierce miniseries on hbo and was blown away by the voice, now I have the true face of the most wonderful sound I have ever heard! Thanks whoever put this up for us to enjoy.

  • @patrickofreeman iv just finished watching the mildred pierce mini series... is she the women behind verta's voice??? thought it sounded familiour is this women who sings for verta? xx

  • @yoyozippy Yes. That's Sumi. Some more singers were used there. Puritani, Gilda, Queen of the night and the main theme (I'm chasing the rainbow) are Sumi's voice. First three were licensed from her recital & opera albums, and the last song was newly recorded for this film.

  • Its actually Dilber Yunus used on Mildred Pierce.

  • @ExistentiaDementia It's Sumi Jo

  • @patrickofreeman Hmmm, I'm pretty sure it's the voice of Dilbèr Yunus we hear in Mildred Pierce :)

  • one of the greatest ever!!!!!!!!!

  • her voice sounds like polished crystal!!

  • wow

  • She sounds pretty darn good. Especially since I just got through listening to the Florence Foster Jenkins version of this song.

  • My name is Cristabel... I think I know why... :l

  • Nice...

  • That was odd. Just wanted to watch like 20 seconds of it but I was so captivated I watched the whole thing.

  • We can compare two singers on the same performance, and SHE IS THE BEST EVER, definitely.

This is purity, the purity of crystal. Better than sutherland.

    I love her.

  • I'm sure we all have our favorite coloraturas and Sutherland, Gruberova, Robin (for her crazy range) Sills and Battle happen to be my favorites, but I find new favorites everyday. I think Jo did a marvelous job with Bell Song. Brava!

  • Brava x 5

  • hermosaaaa

  • her decrescendo on that E!! omg. the control...

  • Am totally awed by this performance never heard her singing something so technically demanding b4

  • MAGNIFIQUE BRAAVOOOOOOOO from France.

  • This is completely awesome. what a talent God bless you...

  • wow! i couldn't do that!!!!

  • Who wants to reset Lakmé in South Korea?

  • I have a question (i'm new to opera). @2:59 is it supposed to be that dissonant?

  • @msgc76 That's not dissonant, that's the B perfect major chord

  • Why is she in such a rush at the beginning? Such a great voice should take her time and let us listen for as long as we can..

  • @bigus.....yeah you're right many times singers do make vocal/tech mistakes but see the thing is one would have to compare their rendition with the musical score written by the composer! Not some other singer. Every singer's voice is diffrent and so is there technique while singing so although it's very possible to compare two singers ( It's all repertory anyway), in the end it's really not fair.

  • STTTTEEEEELLLLLLLARRRRRR!!

  • holy crap... the high register at the end. Amazing.

  • she is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 But I have to say that natalie Dessay in the role of Lakme is unique. She´s great!!! Sumi has an amazign voice. But Natalie is Natalie. =) amazing singer. One of my favourites

  • She is definitely brilliant in this- one of the best...

  • wow

  • how funny..the story was set on British India and Indians do not know about this Opera at all...I am so surprised to know this today. wow...

  • @koelschwolf E5.

  • JC.

  • Is that Karajan? Best conductor ever and that, and I ain't even kidding or nuffin'.

  • This was beautiful. She is one of my all time favorite coloraturas.

  • The quality of the recording is not as good as she is.

  • wonderful

  • the magical thing about professional singers is that to be able to sing something correctly, their musical ability has to exceed that of the song they are singing... she could more than likely sing it as fast as the wanted, but chose not to for interpretation purposes.

  • bravissima

  • i dont listen to opera very much but this is very relaxing and easily listened to

  • perfection

  • I love her voice....

and yes each interpreter is different .....

you can`t compare...are different voices...different way of feel the song....and also different techniques (well not different but it`s not the same for each body....that`s what i think...)

  • Elizabeth Parcells is still the best for this, but Sumi Jo as always is wonderful.

  • I LOVE HER.....

  • god! I love her voice in this song. maybe the best song for her voice.

  • After Maria Callas , the best interpretation :)))

  • She has a beautiful voice, but I don't think parts of this song suit it.

  • Whoa, she blew me away!

  • Bravo !!!! Bravo !!!! ***** 10 *****

  • Watch eglise gutierrez....she's just the master at this

    alexXx

  • Crystaaaaal beeeell!!!!

  • her voice is really beautiful

  • between sumi and dessay, sumi has a more powerful voice and dessay's voice is more natural.

  • SPECTACULAR!!!

  • If Miklosa would sing this role, maybe she might succeed.

  • It's good but I think I prefer the sweeter and more innocent-sounding rendition of Natalie Dessay. Nonetheless, she does a good job. :D those pianissimo high notes are not easy to do!

  • Sencillamente sensacional

  • She is not human! she´s a bird. those staccatos are insanes GO SUMI!!!!

  • what a gorgeous voice!!!! viva asian singers!!!!! :-)

  • what a great voice! really good! i give her 5 stars!

  • Truly in love with Sumi's voice.

    Wonderful <3

  • Have you ever though 'this would sound just wonderful if I were not listening live, and not to a shitty audio clip on youtube, so I might as well go listen to Pantera?'

    Because I have.

  • fantastica...

  • Wow, this is just gorgeous.

  • Wow. Where have the Koreans been hiding all these years???

(I know, I know, they just aren't seen in the U.S. much. But this lady is great)

  • Hermoso, inspirador

  • Absolutely incredible - I can't appreciate this enough.

  • goodness. so beautiful!!!

  • excellent!!!!!!

  • except for the small squeeek at the end, amazing!

  • I dont need to hear more...she's fabulous! Sorry Maria and Joan!

  • she is ok...but dont say sorry sorry Maria...are you kdding me? Maria owns everybody , inclusing you!)

  • @feveroo7 i think its stupid to say that maria callas owns every other soprano. maybe YOU think that she was the best, and maybe lots of other people think that. but i personally don't like marias voice that much. and please, don't be childish now and start offending me or something. its just my opinion. and its just your opinion that callas was the best. i dont think she was,so what? just let everybody like the soprano he likes.

  • Tou posledni notou si nejsem jist, malinko mi to taha usi.

  • I do prefer Elisabeth Parcells version for this song especially for the last note, but Sumi Jo is very good. Awsome technique.

  • Brava Sumi Jo!!! She has marvelous technique!!! There's nothing "funny" in her lips. I also don't understand why people keep comparing her to Callas and Sutherland. They are singers of COMPLETELY DIFFERENT fachs...It's really ignorant to do that.

  • thats true enough of compare!!!

  • I LOVE SUMI JO!!!!

(other than English.)

I agree, though, I mean... A CARICATURE? Let's see vocalissimo try to sing something, for hilarity.

  • Comment removed

  • you should say "perfect version for me" and don't forget there will be people who would say "dislike" to the version what you think "perfect", learn to respect (don't have to appreciate!) these god given talented divas before you insult them for your metter of taste! GD!

  • See also Petya Ivanova's stunning rendition of Lakme

  • Brilliant. As simple as that!

  • she's amazing! the great soprano Sumi JO!

    i love she! Brava!

  • She's the best I've heard since Lily Pons. She doesn't have the vocal speed that Pons had but she's better than Callas or Sutherland.

  • she is very good, but i dont think you can compare her to other singers. every singer is different, and none are better than the next. the only thing that matters is what enters your ears, and maybe her voice, sumi jo's, is more pleasant to you than Sutherland's of Callas's, but you still cannot compare them.

  • @preppybeast6293 Of course you can compare one singer with another. Is Florence Foster Jenkins' performance of this song equal to Sumi Jo's? Of course not. In our quest to make nobody feel bad, we sometimes skip necessary judgments of quality.

  • @preppybeast6293 i believe you can compare. some people do things right and some people do things wrong vocally/technically. musically its open for interpretation i think there. but vocally i absolutely think you can compare one singer to the next.

  • @neoceratodus Mady Mesplé... is better and Natalie Dessay too.

  • =)) she is really funny doing that thing with her upper lip oooaaoaaaaa -))))

  • really? I thought it sounded flat for like half a second, but then she fixed it beautifully. hmmm. i don't know.

  • wow

This dude is saying she ain'r good, and that she missed 11 tempos, now Delibes´Lakmé is not a very well "popular" ópera, so how does that dude knows she skipped 11 tempos?? Added her as a favorite and he says she is NOT GOOD, dude R U retarded??? ès retardado mental???

  • I did not say it is not good, I said that is not my full taste. I can not possibly prefer Dessay?. Lakmé is not popular but I do know this quite well, I know it jumped 11 bars, if you look at the score you'll see it's true. No offense friend, just because I was unflattering comment. Disqualify me or my page, my band or whatever, you are not objective and are fallacies, if you want to defend something they do it with arguments and not disqualifications.

No puedo preferir a Dessay acaso?.

  • do you mind?

    tempos? are you think?

he said 11bars - and he is RIGHT, near the beggining of the aria she missed out part of it,

and that's proberly because she's in concert - she does the same with sempre libera.

will you give it a rest please? your inability to understant is intolerable.

  • when you make a public comment - it;s open to the public, kindly either widen your vocabulary, or keep your ignorance to yourself.

try not to spoil the video for the rest of us yeah?

  • LOL I am not trying to get involved with your fight with somebody or something, but "ya stupid beef" sounded funny ROFL lol

  • In the South on our beach resorts ,Hooligans go there and everyday they make a mess, so, those special cops are called and they call ONLY the english BEEFS, I've spent 20 years of my life studying music, then this mamma boy comes here and comment about music... i've seen and heard the Greater Artists alive, then that dude started, I was speaking with finwenlin, we sorted everything out, np, yep, BEEFS ROFL

  • LOL BEEFS ROFL

  • I knew she was good, but damn!

  • FUCKIN AAAAAAAA , OMG!! SHE IS UNREAL.

  • she is so amazing. i studied and sang opera in Germany for 20 years and i have never heard anyone sing this song better. you are a true genius.

  • This is a beautiful LIVE performance! Sumi Jo is so talented.

  • No that is the original key, that´s an E natural at the end, just a tiny tad out of tune...

  • The conductor is very paternal :). Kind regards :].

  • never heard something better!!

  • hope she'll come to malaysia doing class

  • Oh, God. I love her.

    Sumi Jo, eres brillante !!

  • What is the lowest to highest range voice of sumi jo?? Reply please.

  • NO!!! joke... well her highest note on youtube is an F (Queen of the night) and the lowest is probably about a B or b-flat below middle C

  • actually I've also found an F# on the "grossmachtige prinzessin"....she sang the original piece Strauss wrote in 1912...you can find it here on youtube ^^

  • well i dont really know her lowest note but i guess it is around c4 maybe.....her highest note is for sure F6# she sang it in "grossmachtige prinzessin", the original score Strauss wrote in 1912, you can find it here on youtube.hope i helped ^_^

  • this is really good. i'm surprised. i didn't expect her to be this good.

  • Divine

  • Incredible!!!

  • Straordinario

  • magnificent!!!!
