  • Just picked this up in a charity shop for £5.99. Never heard of it before but hoping it's complete. Further proof to myself I'll buy pretty much anything with Pratchett / Discworld on it

  • green day

  • in this game did the dwarves ambush the trolls or did the trolls ambush the dwarves? =D

  • I see a Green Day shirt. :)

  • I've played Tablut, a game similar to Hnefatafl, with a homemade board and coins as pieces. I see a problem with this set being that the pieces are the same colour, we used 5 cent and 10 cent Euro coins, so it's easy to just glance at the board. They should produce a Thud! set with different coloured pieces. I might be interested in buying one... the rules seem interesting enough.

  • This is a great game! :D

  • £300 WTF !!!

I GOT IT £20 ON EBAY

  • lol the board game cost me £300 from an eclectic games shop on the corner of my street xD

  • oh, ye, and btw...when you take a troll with a dwarf, the dwarf dies it's in the rulebook somewhere :/

  • its a bit like the Yorvic game i bought from the yorvic centre in york. do you know it? its harder than chess to win and is older some say.

  • where can the board gaem be purchased?

  • See the above comments about TKMaxx and specialist gameshops, or online at the official website.

  • The book is really fantastic!

  • what is thepoint of the game

  • It's a Discworld version of Chess or Checkers - you have two side that have different moves they can make and you have to tactically eliminate the opposition.

  • @CaptainJohnnyReb

    Not exactly..

Stealthchess is the Discworld version of chess and according to the AM assassins guild it also predates chess.

Thud is more similar to Hnefatafl then it is to chess. Although I must say that it seams unique.

  • @gamer209232 fun :-)

  • hello! i was given this game a while ago, i tried to play it once but i can't understand how the dwarves can possibly win? i've tried playing a couple of times and each time it seems like an impossible task for the dwarves, i know they're supposed to bunch together but in practise it never actually works, can anyone help me out here? i don't know what i'm doing wrong or whether i've misunderstood the rules?

  • That's odd - I've always found the dwarves always win! If you gang the dwarves into deep blocks they're unstoppable.

  • that's strange, i just find that because the trolls can take out however many dwarves they end up standing next to, that any attempt to make a block on my part is smashed to pieces in a couple of turns.

  • Yes, but remember there are more dwarves than trolls so even though they can take up to 8 dwarves in one capture the dwarves can take out 1 troll by putting 1 dwarf into a potentially dangerous position - sacrifice 1 dwarf to each troll and you've won.

  • i still don't get it, because the sacrificial dwarves tend not to even slow the trolls down, the troll can move diagonally past it and still end his turn in contact with the dwarf and therefore remove it from the game. the times i've tried to play it's just been absolutely impossible for the dwarves to do anything, someone should upload a full video of a game being played properly, i wanna check that i'm not doing it wrong.

  • ooo, i only just noticed that it was you who uploaded this video, haha

  • there's a community website called thudgame where there's a java applet for playing online. There's also an emulator called thudboard that keeps track of board states and generates a line of text for each move, so you can send your move over email or likewise.

Chess by Mail, meet Thud by Clacks.

  • Does this game actually exist? I've read the book but i don't know if there actually is a game of thud. If yes, is there anywhere i can find the rules?

  • It is an actual boardgame. I bought it at a reduced price from my local TKMaxx a couple of years ago but it is also available at specialist game shops or you can visit thudgame dot com for further info.

  • Do you think we can find it in france? I've read the book and even if I think I'll be a creepy player at it, my friend who has also read the book might like it.

anyway, thanks for the video ^^

  • I did see a new version with better pieces being played on a TV documentary recently so it has been re-released at some time though I've never seen it in the shops since I got my copy. It is available from Amazon at a whopping £24.99!

  • ok thanks!
