  • I remember talking to Simon Estes, who was a wonderful Phillipo a role he sang often, and he said that only Salminen could put the fear of god of him, like having a bomb exploding next to him.

  • Bravi- Matti is awesome, a truly intimidating Inquisitor! Ferrucio is even better today as his voice has matured into the role of the complex Philip II.

  • The vocal battle here is superb. What worthy adversaries.

  • Bravo!

  • These boys SET IT OFF! Two monsters in battle. OFF THE SCALE! BRAVI!

  • These boys SET IT OFF!

  • beautiful dramatic scene

  • amazing

  • Ееех, Верди ! Какъв невероятен мозък само!

  • deludenti entrambi, mi spiace...

  • 100 - 200 views per day but why no new evaluations for weeks! Are we just 200 music lovers who enjoy this every day?

  • @rapoeli2 I do have this in my playlist, so count me in for a few of those views ;)

  • I think Salminen is simply UNBEATABLE.

  • Ferruccio Furlanetto... what a truly remarkable singer.

  • Is that really Matti Salminen as Inquisitor? Yeah, I guess he is. Great make-up and costume! And he's pretty frightening, just as it should be. Great stuff!!

  • I want to be the grand Inquisistor

  • I KNOW who U R U WHACK JOB

  • But wud u do the inquisitor?

  • Id do king philip

  • Simply gorgeous.

  • Cesare Siepi & Giulio Neri

  • Impressive. One of the most epic scenes in all of opera, and beautifully performed here

  • Salminen eats Furlanetto

  • @kiipija

True, but his ending phrase is extremely better than most Fillipes'. Perhaps he was saving for that.

  • i think thats kind of furlanettos intent here....

  • @kiipija Dunque il TR (incredible high F) OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONO piegar dovrà sempre all'altaaar (incredible low F) eeeeeeeeeeeee.

    Salminen owned.

  • Combinatoin of Verdi, furlanetto and Salminen is georgous.. thanks for tis video, i know much variants of this duet, and tis is great, if I compare with historical performances...

  • one of the srongest scenes between two bass figures, and here, wonderful voices!

  • I saw Don Carlo again at Covent Garden this week. Great to see that 23 years on Furlanetto still performs a brilliant Fillipe.

I'm not going to get in to comparisons with a wonderful Salminen but John Tomlinson was just as brilliant as the Inquisitor, full of menace.

  • And funnily enough, I see that Salminen is playing King Marke in Tristan when I'm there next week. Quite a coincidence :-)

  • I was there too! And agree.

  • I always think that this is the most thrilling scene in the opera, though the appearance of Charles V at the end comes close. The duel of two powerful men here is just extrordinary. As the battle, the notes get higher. Almost desperate. Of course, Don Carlos is possibly the gretest opera ever written (and I love Wagner, but bow to this one of Verdi's).

  • 6:25 to 7:00 ish. Chills.

  • This and a scene from Don Giovanni conducted by Furtwangler always make me cry. Keep the uploads up.

  • Viva Furlanetto!

  • Viva Salminen!!

  • no sorry about that, both King Phillip and the inquisitor sing fantasticly

  • Phwor King Philp is a sexy beast despite his very naughty deed phworrxxxx

  • great performance.. but, i do prefer the Hines and Pilshka´s duet version

  • yeah i thought that was more AWE-SOME also

  • Matti is incredible- absolutely terrifying.....

  • @srr10

This recording has the stuff to live forever as a landmark performance!!

  • both are just amazing... bravi!!

  • Semplicemente stupendo. Insuperabile. Furlanetto e Karajan!

  • ¡Bravo!. ¡Sublime!. Tensión, drama,.... humanidad.

  • Salminenn ROCKS

  • Salminen sing his role like no others...congrats!!!

  • What a masterpiece and what an unreachable performance. This makes me cry. Thank you for uploading this, it is greatly appreciated!!!

  • superbo furlanetto!

  • I am blown away by Salminen. He's better in this role than Talvela, Hines, Neri and all the others.

I jut posted a similar sort of scene between Khovansky and Dosifei called "Battle of the Basses". I heard Salminen do Dosifei live a decade or so ago. He's real impressive.

  • The music is absolutely chilling...

  • This was furlanetto's first Phillip, he subsitutes for Jose Van Dam, who backed out of the production. Karajan went to his leporello of the season. He was lucky to have ferruccio. And they were both lucky to have Matti!

  • Great performance. Anyway, Ferruccio Furlanetto here is still young. He became even better as he grew up...

  • True, true... But it's always interesting to compare an artist's present vocal form with his (or her) former abilities, don't you find?

  • Of course, you're right. I am not saying that he was bad here; at all. Have you listened to Sherley Verrett as Eboli singing "Don Fatale"? I think she is the best ever in that role. Telle me what you think of that. Ciao F

  • @francesco9958 you mean he is even better now, still growing strong!

  • Bravo!
